This summer, singer Saleka Shyamalan will star as a pop star in her father M Night’s Josh Hartnett-led thriller Trap, having previously contributed songs for his Apple show Servant and 2021 thriller Old. Before that, the Oscar-nominated film-maker is also ushering his daughter Ishana’s directorial debut into cinemas, Irish fantasy horror The Watchers (weirdly retitled The Watched for the UK and Ireland), his middle child having already worked with him on both the big and small screen. The trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s new thriller Trap has arrived, giving a glimpse into Josh Hartnett’s performance as an unexpected serial killer. Watch the full clip below.
In Trap, Harnett plays a father who takes his teen daughter to a concert performed by pop star Lady Raven. The film interweaves the story with Lady Raven’s performance, taking place in near-real time.
Beginning as a wholesome family experience, the trailer drastically shifts in tone when Hartnett’s character discovers the police have set up a trap (get it?) at the concert to capture a notorious serial killer called The Butcher. Seemingly giving away the film’s big twist, Harnett is revealed to be The Butcher.
Written and directed by Shyamalan, Trap also stars Ariel Donoghue, Hayley Mills, and Allison Pill. It’s set to arrive in theaters on August 9th.

On quite a Hitchcockian-meets Twilight Zone streak with the one-two punch of Old and Knock and the Cabin, expectations are high for M. Night Shyamalan to deliver once again with his upcoming thriller Trap.
Featuring a much-deserved lead role for Josh Hartnett, starring alongside the filmmaker’s daughter Saleka Shyamalan, the film follows a father and daughter who realize the concert they are attending is set up as a sting operation by the police.
One may want to avoid the below trailer if they want to skip spoilers, but perhaps among the most intriguing elements of Shyamalan’s latest is the gorgeous cinematography by Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, collaborator of Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Luca Guadagnino.

There is not a more divisive filmmaker working today than M. Night Shyamalan. Everyone can basically agree that his 1999 breakthrough "The Sixth Sense" is a supernatural classic, but after that? Slip on the brass knuckles and get ready to rumble. Shyamalan's early 2000s hits "Unbreakable" and "Signs," along with his 2017 comeback "Split," generate the least amount of friction, but aside from those three, it's so very on. You'll hear reasonable defenses for just about all of his films (save for the singularly atrocious "The Last Airbender"). While it's hard to sway folks on a movie as wackadoodle as "The Happening," it is only a good thing to have a major filmmaker knocking out provocative original movies for major studios.
Shyamalan's latest provocation, "Trap," will be his first project under his first-look deal with Warner Bros., and as is typically the case with a new Shyamalan movie, we know next to nothing about it.

M. Night Shyamalan has signed a multi-year first-look directing and producing agreement with Warner Bros., and up first is a mysterious psychological thriller titled Trap.
The film has been dated for theatrical release on August 2, 2024, and it’s reportedly set at a concert. Josh Hartnett (30 Days of Night) stars, and he teases in a new chat with Indiewire that Shyamalan’s new movie is going to be a big time “pivot” for him as an actor.
“It’s a pivot,” Hartnett tells Indiewire. “But I try to make all of my roles pivots. If you’re playing the same thing again and again, it gets boring to the audience.”
“Working with M. Night was one of the best experiences of my career,” Hartnett adds. “I think he’s a true artist in the capital-a sense of the word. And I think people are gonna be really surprised and excited about the movie we make.

While Josh Hartnett witnessed a notable spike in his career in the 2000s after starring in Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down, he kind of disappeared from the Hollywood limelight in the 2010s. But the actor finally marked his big comeback with Christopher Nolan’s critically and commercially acclaimed Oppenheimer, which saw him playing the Nobel Prize winner Ernest Lawrence.
And it appears the actor has no intentions of slowing things down, as for his next outing, he will be appearing in Avatar: The Last Airbender director’s upcoming new horror, Trap.

Josh Hartnett, once a teen sensation with films like The Virgin Suicides and Pearl Harbor under his belt, is making waves again. This time, he’s collaborating with acclaimed director M. Night Shyamalan. They’re currently working on a project in Canada, a film that’s been intriguingly described as a “psychological thriller set at a concert.”
Interestingly, the film was first titled Trap, but now it’s shooting under the temporary name Good Grades. While the final title remains a mystery, the anticipation is building. Shyamalan is not just directing; he’s also wearing the producer’s hat and funding the entire venture. It’s a bold move, especially since they’re filming amidst an ongoing actors’ strike. But Shyamalan, known for his dedication, has secured an agreement from SAG-AFTRA to proceed.

Though we won’t take full credit for the Josh Hartnettaissance, we were among the first publications to note he––as totemic a figure of early-2000s American movies as anybody else––was up to something interesting. Recent castings by Guy Ritchie and Christopher Nolan have portended a return to more mainstream features, a moment more or less confirmed by today’s news that Hartnett will lead M. Night Shyamalan’s next, currently shooting feature, once known as Trap but now shooting under the title Good Grades. [Film Updates]
In June, Shyamalan confirmed the feature is a “psychological thriller set at a concert.” Hartnett’s playing a father who gets stuck in the event after taking his daughter; meanwhile, the director’s daughter Saleka Shyamalan will play a pop star. Does this mean the return of Mid-Sized Sedan? Further details on the production (even a Dp) are yet to emerge, but an...

The Shyamalan family business is creativity — and Saleka Shyamalan is the musician of the family. The singer-songwriter, who studied music at Brown University, is one of the creative forces behind "Servant." She's produced a handful of original songs for the horror series, including its most recent original song, "There Is A Place." Often, her songs provide moments of clarity and transformation for Leanne Grayson (Nell Tiger Free).
Season three of the Apple TV+ series is, as Saleka agrees, the most compelling chapter yet. It's faster, nastier, and turns the danger and paranoia up to an all-time series' high. Saleka's songs, however, can provide breathers...

M. Night Shyamalan’s “Old” is a family affair, at least behind the scenes.
The film follows a group of tourists staying at a luxury resort who discover that the secluded beach where they are relaxing causes them to rapidly age. At one point, Maddox — the character played by Alexa Swinton and Thomasin McKenzie — sings a song in the film, titled “Remain.” The song was written by Shyamalan’s daughter, Saleka Shyamalan, a singer and songwriter.
The second unit director of the film is his other daughter, Ishana Shyamalan, a recent graduate of New York University. The two had previously collaborated on Shyamalan’s Apple TV Plus series, “Servant.”
Below, she talks about working with her father, learning from him and growing up watching horror films.
How did this job come about for you?
It happened randomly. I was doing work on “Servant,” and he pitched it to me far in advance.

When filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan was giving notes to singer-songwriter Saleka Shyamalan — his daughter — one song he played for her was the U2 hit “With or Without You.”
The director had recruited Saleka, no stranger to collaborating with her father, to write a track for his latest film “Old,” which opens in theaters July 23. He wanted her to write a song about love that felt like Bono’s lyrics.
The film follows a group of tourists staying at a local luxury resort who discover that the secluded beach where they are relaxing turns into a nightmare, as they start to rapidly age. At the center of the story is a couple Guy (Gael García Bernal ) and Prisca (Vicky Krieps) on vacation with their two children. This vacation is a last-ditch attempt for their struggling relationship and other factors.
