Rep. Karen Bass (D-ca) and Councilman Kevin de Leon will take part in a Los Angeles mayoral candidates forum at ICM Partners on Tuesday that will focus on what is perhaps the biggest issue in the race: homelessness.
The event, called Solving Homelessness and sponsored by Politico and ICM Partners, also will feature Alfre Woodard with opening remarks. It comes with just two weeks before the mayoral primary, with polls showing a tight race between Bass and developer Rick Caruso. An ICM Partners spokesperson said that Caruso, who has blanketed Los Angeles airwaves with ads focused on the homelessness crisis, was invited but declined, citing a scheduling conflict.
In a debate in March, Bass said that she would appoint a person who would be in charge of addressing the homelessness crisis and that person would report to her. She also talked of a plan to house 15,000 people in her first year.

Developer Rick Caruso’s ads have blanketed the Los Angeles airwaves the message that he is just the non-career politician that the city needs to solve the homelessness crisis and crime, but on Tuesday, he for the first time faced his rivals in the race.
He quickly became the focus of attacks at the USC Dornsife Center for the Political Future/Los Angeles Times/Fox 11 debate.
Councilman Joe Buscaino welcomed him to the debate, “finally.”
City Attorney Mike Feuer chided him for not doing much to build affordable housing and opposing rent control, and then for owning a $100 million yacht registered in the Cayman Islands.
City Councilman Kevin de Leon challenged his plan to build up the Los Angeles Police Department with additional officers as “malarkey.”
Congresswoman Karen Bass, who is the frontrunner based on a recent poll, largely strayed from the potshots yet did take issue with Caruso’s attacks on career politicians.

“No one will force you to get a vaccine, but if you decide not to get one, there are certain things you will not be able to do,” said Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez about a vote taken today that will require people to show proof of full Covid-19 vaccination before entering indoor entertainment venues.
The amendment to the city ordinance passed today with 11 “ayes” and two “nays.” Councilmen Joe Buscaino and John Lee were the dissenters. Two other members were absent for the vote.
Ordinances need unanimous approval upon their first reading. Supervisor Buscaino invoked the council’s Rule 39 on the first reading last week, which allowed him to withhold the unanimous consent required to pass the ordinance. That meant potential approval would be delayed to this week.
Due to the ordinance’s “urgency clause,” the ordinance needed 12 yes votes upon its second consideration to pass with urgency today,...

The Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to designate the 95-year-old Granada Theater in Wilmington as a historic-cultural monument.
The 1,000-seat venue opened its doors in 1926 to host vaudeville acts. It changed owners numerous times and over the decades has been used as a performance arts center, filming location, World War II-era movie house and Spanish cinema theater, among other purposes, according to the group Friends of the Wilmington Granada.
The organization has been working to raise money and reopen the theater as an independent movie house and performance center, now that the church that occupied the building for the past 15 years has moved out. “Reopening the Wilmington Granada theater will not only create jobs but will stimulate the economy by offering performances and films,” Friends of the Wilmington Granada said on its Facebook page.

Rep. Karen Bass (D-ca) officially announced on Monday that she would be running for mayor of Los Angeles.
“With my whole heart, I’m ready. Let’s do this — together. I’m running for mayor,” Bass tweeted. She also introduced a campaign website.
According to a poll conducted last month, Bass would be one of the leading candidates in what could be a crowded field of contenders. She was among those that Vice President Joseph Biden considered as his running mate, before ultimately picking Vice President Kamala Harris. Bass has represented a west Los Angeles congressional district since 2011, including communities of Culver City, Rancho Park, Crenshaw and Baldwin Hills, and previously served as speaker in the California state assembly.

The Los Angeles City Council voted 13-0 today to have the city attorney prepare an ordinance requiring people to show proof of at least partial vaccination against Covid to enter most public indoor spaces in the city, including restaurants, bars, gyms, concert venues, movie theaters and even “retail establishments.”
Council President Nury Martinez — who is in line take over as mayor once Eric Garcetti leaves — and Councilman Mitch O’Farrell introduced the motion last Wednesday.
“Covid-19 could be eradicated if we had mass vaccinations across the country and across the world,” O’Farrell said before noting the United States’ history eradicating smallpox and mostly eradicating polio through vaccinations.
“Why on Earth is it Ok in 2021 to have 30 plus people die in the county of Los Angeles from Covid over a three-day period, including an 11-year- old girl, when we have a vaccine that could have prevented all of that, accessible to everyone,...

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti will be nominated as U.S. Ambassador to India, as President Joe Biden made official the long-expected choice.
We hear that Garcetti plans to stay on as mayor until he is confirmed.
If confirmed in the Senate, Garcetti’s departure would create a vacancy in the city’s highest office. His term expires on December 11, 2022.
According to the city charter, the City Council could appoint a person to fill the position through the end of the term. It also could call a special election to fill the vacancy through the end of the term and appoint someone to hold the office temporarily until that special election’s results are certified.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti appears to be in line to be nominated by President Joe Biden for a post as ambassador to India, and although the White House has made no announcements as of yet, it raises the question: Who would be the next mayor?
Reports surfaced several weeks ago that Garcetti was under consideration for the ambassadorial post, after earlier speculation focused on being nominated for another country, Mexico. On Wednesday, the Associated Press reported that Garcetti had been picked, along with other names like Rahm Emanuel to Japan and Tom Nides to Israel.
If nominated, Garcetti would face Senate confirmation, which could take several months and would include a hearing where he will be grilled by members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. That would include the committee’s Republican members, who include Sen. James Risch (R-id), Sen. Mitt Romney (R-ut) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-tx), the...

He was being treated for smoke inhalation while in custody and being held on $75,000 bail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Updated with latest: On the heels of Los Angeles pulling its meager supply of Johnson & Johnson vaccine this morning, California State Epidemiologist Dr. Erica Pan issued the following statement regarding the Coronavirus vaccine:
“Today, the CDC and Fda have recommended a temporary pause in the use of the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine out of an abundance of caution. Of over 6.8 million doses administered nationally, there have been six reported cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot with symptoms occurring 6 to 13 days after vaccination.
“California is following the Fda and CDC’s recommendation and has directed health care providers to pause the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine until we receive further direction from health and safety experts. Additionally, the state will convene the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup to review the information provided by the federal government on this issue. Pete Buttigieg and Joe Biden were each in Los Angeles on Friday for campaign swings, but the former South Bend mayor also did some fundraising before showbiz-centric crowds.

Among them: What about the possibility that President Donald Trump would not show up for general election debates?
According to a pool report, Buttigieg said that they need to make sure that there is a “price to be paid” if Trump refuses to debate, and said that skipping the event would be a “show of weakness.”
