Even for a group of people who perhaps deservedly feel compelled to champion their continued relevance, if not importance, there are few things that film critics and entertainment journalists like to talk about more than themselves. But in the last few weeks there's been a preponderance of goings-on in internet journalism and film criticism that is troubling at a deeper, and considerably more important level: it's not just that people are stealing more than ever, it's that those people are trying to justify it.
Although plagiarism is hardly a new problem for journalists, much less those who write primarily for the internet, recent events have highlighted both the internet's vast reservoir of content people can steal from, and its remarkable penchant for self-policing.
A few weeks ago, an English "critic" named Tom Perkins who records video reviews was caught repeating the verbatim text of an Iron Man 2 review which...

While Cinematical refers to him as "film critic," Tom Perkins does not deserve the title. The FilmXTRATOM blogger has overtly plagiarized film reviews from JoBlo.com and other sources for over a year, and after denying it several times, he finally admitted to his wrongdoing. JoBlo has posted his apology letter. What do they teach them in these schools? The young Brit blames YouTube for his actions: "Now I know you don't want to hear any excuses but my main reason for starting to plagiarise a while ago was mainly because YouTube has become so easily corruptible these days I kind of wanted to see how corruptible it can be. Which of course got way out of hand and I forgot that I was taking advantage of ...

The site has been buzzing the past few days with news that a UK YouTube movie reviewer had been caught plagiarizing JoBlo.com movie reviews from our own Chris Bumbray and Jimmy O, and reading them like they were his own. His name is Tom Perkins, and his web show was called FilmXTRA. On first glance he’s an energetic young Brit with a seeming passion for movies, but upon closer inspection, he’s a thieving bastard who has stolen nearly everything he’s ever posted...

It’s been a very busy 24 hours for the movie industry and as the 82nd Academy Awards fade into the memory HeyUGuys took some time to mull over the winners, the losers and the controversy.
Dave and I were joined as usual by /Film’s own man in the UK Brendon Connelly and also we were joined by FilmXtra’s Tom Perkins, the latest member of the HeyUGuys family, who braved the transatlantic time difference to say up all night to video blog the entire evening.
There were a few surprises on the night, and we talk over the main events and the whole Oscars experience.
You can listen in your browser below, or click here to subscribe to the MouthOff feed in iTunes, where you can also find our older episodes.
I hope you enjoy it, do let us know what you want to hear, or if you agree...

The biggest night in Hollywood is here and over the next few hours they’ll be tears, cheers and (hopefully) a few surprises as the 82nd Academy Awards are handed out.
The sordid trudge up the red carpet has finished and I’m going to be blogging live as the winners are announced, you can have a look at our Oscars predictions here and follow us on as the Twitter storm rages, or get all interactive with FilmXtra Tom who is video blogging the Oscars here.
My hopes are with Colin Firth and Carey Mulligan and I’m secretly hoping that Tarantino walks off with Best Picture for Inglourious Basterds and Coraline bests Up for Best Animated Feature.
Ok… the time is upon us. I’ll be updating the blog with the winners as I go, as well as providing as coherent a commentary as possible.
Remember to keep hitting...

Tonight’s the night. The 82nd Academy Awards are only hours away and despite the increase in number to ten Best Picture nominees, most of the hype and speculation has been around two films, James Cameron’s 3D spectacular Avatar, and Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker.
So, to jump on a particularly crowded bandwagon, we’re asking you if you’re Team Avatar or Team Hurt Locker?
Bigelow’s film did amazingly well at the BAFTAs a few weeks ago, surprising many people, but the Oscars is a different fish kettle altogether. In the same way that Colin Firth is unlikely to beat out Jeff Bridges in the Best Actor category it seems a certainty for Avatar to mimic Cameron’s last Oscars sweep twelve years ago. At least, that’s how it seemed until recently. Bigelow’s win at the DGA awards points to a likely split between...

Hello there fellow movie lovers, my name is Tom Perkins and I’m the latest person to join the HeyUGuys family. I will be the video correspondent for this awesome site and each week you’ll see me popping up talking the latest news, my own reviews and lots more interesting stuff like that. It’s going to be a wonderful friendship.
I would like to thank Jon and Dave for finally giving way to my YouTube awesomeness and I’m truly excited about where this site is going. Anyway some of UGuys may remember me from an older version of the site because I did post a few of my older shows nearly a year ago now, but now I’m back with a new look and ready and raring to maybe take HeyUGuys onto bigger and better things.
