At the same time Sleater-Kinney were recording their latest full-length, Little Rope, they realized some of the songs would feel different with new lighting. So they recut them with producer John Goodmanson at Portland, Oregon’s Flora Recording. Three of those renditions make up the new EP, Frayed Rope Sessions, which came out today, International Women’s Day. The group will donate all net proceeds from sales of the EP via Bandcamp today to Noise for Now, an organization that helps provide resources for reproductive rights around the country.

On the heels of their January album Little Rope, Sleater-Kinney have returned to offer the Frayed Rope Sessions EP.
The three-track EP consists of reimagined versions of Little Rope tracks “Say It Like You Mean It,” “Hunt You Down,” and “Untidy Creature.” The release also coincides with International Women’s Day today (March 8th) — proceeds from Sleater-Kinney’s Bandcamp sales will benefit the reproductive justice organization Noise For Now.
In addition, Sleater-Kinney have released the video series “Little Rope Unraveled,” where the duo break down the three original tracks that appear on the Frayed Rope Sessions EP. Of the new release, Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker wrote in a statement, “We wanted to step back into these songs, reimagine and revisit them, both for ourselves and for the listener. The different arrangements expose the songs anew, getting at their core or the outer edges. Frayed Rope was a...

Sleater-Kinney’s 2019 album The Center Will Not Hold attempted to modernize the band’s sound by, for one, enlisting St. Vincent as producer. Following the departure of drummer Janet Weiss, remaining members Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein’s self-produced follow-up, Path of Wellness, felt like a course correction—more in line with their established sound, if lacking the grit that characterized the band’s early efforts.
Little Rope leans even more toward hard rock, with an emphasis on dynamics. It’s an approach that’s apparent from the opening “Hell,” whose desolate musings—“Hell is just a signpost when you take a certain path”—are delivered almost a cappella. Guitar feedback swirls ominously, mostly on the first beat of each bar, highlighting the confusion and upset of the lyrics. The song’s chorus serves as a cathartic, if ambiguous, release, with Tucker unleashing a mighty riot grrrl roar over thunderous...

Sleater-Kinney have shared “Untidy Creature,” another single from their upcoming album Little Rope.
“Untidy Creature” is a slower pace than the average Sleater-Kinney tune, but it keeps up the energy with a cacophony of booming electric guitars: “And it feels like we were broken/ And I’m holding the pieces so tight/ And you can try to tell me I’m nothing/ And I don’t have the wings to fly.”
“‘Untidy Creature’ was the first song we wrote for Little Rope, although we didn’t know it at the time; we weren’t certain we were even working on another record,” the band said in a press release. “We also worried it had come too easy, the song featured two elements that come very naturally to Sleater-Kinney: a big guitar riff, an even bigger vocal. But as the year wore on, and our choices and bodily autonomy shrank, our feeling about the song changed.

Sleater-Kinney has released a new single, “Untidy Creature,” along with a music video for the track directed by Nick Pollet. The clip features Australian freediver Amber Bourke, who holds her breath in a bathtub for the duration of the introspective song.
On the track, the closing number on the band’s forthcoming 11th album, Little Rope, Corin Tucker sings, “But here’s too much here that’s unspoken/ And there’s no tomorrow in sight/ Could you love me if I was broken/ There’s no going back tonight.”

Riot grrrl outfit Sleater-Kinney took the stage at Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday night, performing their new single “Say It Like You Mean It” with a little help from Fred Armisen.
As the band’s Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein jammed along, Brownstein’s old Portlandia costar Armisen emerged from stage right midway through the song, coyly shaking a tambourine. The unannounced appearance didn’t seem to affect the other performers, however: “Say it, say it/ Like you mean it,” Tucker continued belting over building synths and chugging guitar. “I need to hear it/ Before you go.”
“Say It Like You Mean It” is the latest single off of Sleater-Kinney’s upcoming album, Little Rope, which is set for release on January 19th. A follow-up to their lead single “Hell,” “Say It Like You Mean It” was released last month along with an accompanying music video starring Succession‘s J. Smith-Cameron.

Sleater-Kinney are back with “Say It Like You Mean It,” another sample of their upcoming studio album Little Rope. The song also arrives with an accompanying music video starring Succession actor J. Smith-Cameron.
“Say It Like You Mean It” sees a more romantic side of Sleater-Kinney, driven by an almost pompous drum beat. It ruminates on the dissolution of a romantic relationship, and the frustration that arises when your ex-to-be just won’t give you a clean break: “Say it like you mean it/ I need to hear it before you go/ Say it like you mean it/ This goodbye hurts when you go,” Corin Tucker sings over a cinematic, sweeping instrumental, both swelling intensely like a pot that’s about to boil over.

Sleater-Kinney have shared the details of Little Rope, their upcoming album out January 19th via Loma Vista. They’re celebrating the news with its lead single “Hell,” out now, along with an extensive run of 2024 tour dates.
The follow-up to 2021’s Path of Wellness is billed as “one of the finest, most delicately layered records” in Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein’s prolific discography. But in its complex, ambitious instrumentation is an unimaginable tragedy: Last fall, Brownstein received a call from Italian embassy staff with the news that both her mother and stepfather had been killed in a car accident during a vacation.
Some of Little Rope had been written at that point, but as Brownstein and Tucker brought the material to the studio, all the music they put to tape became imbued with grief. With each vocal harmony and guitar riff, the album navigates loss — not just its initial pang,...

Bleachers are back with “Modern Girl,” their first new music since 2021’s Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night.
In the wide canon of songs about modern life, Jack Antonoff and company sound more cheery than wistful, more David Bowie’s “Modern Love” than, say, Sleater-Kinney’s “Modern Girl.” With raucous saxophones and a scream, the singer/super producer kicks off a party jam about going out and shaking ass. The band has an equally fun time performing the track in its music video, directed by Alex Lockett.
“Modern Girl” brings Antonoff back to his own band after another couple of years of dominating pop music as a producer. Last year, for example, he lent a hand to Taylor Swift’s Midnights, The 1975’s Being Funny in a Foreign Language, and Lana Del Rey’s Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. Bleachers even appeared on...
