Arguably horror is the most symbolic of film genres, as it relies heavily on senses and imagery to convey suspense and the moral message of the story. The mark of successful horror films as seen in the last few years such as The Babadook, Don’t Breathe, and this year’s sensation Get Out, have managed to balance tone and exposition well – paving the path for more sophisticated endeavours. Sadly, Caradog W. James’ Don’t Knock Twice seems to be taking backward steps down that path, in what can only be described as a juvenile and slapdash piece of cinema.
The film entails American sculptor Jess (Katee Sackhoff), reuniting with her teenage daughter Chloe (Lucy Boynton) who’s living in a foster home. Jess invites Chloe to come live with her but distraught at her mother’s abandonment, the latter refuses. That night Chloe and her boyfriend Danny...

While we await word on what those plucky lads from Raven Banner picked up while over in Berlin at Efm two recent acquisitions are available to Canadians starting today. We will start with Caradog James' horror flick Don't Knock Twice (above) starring Katee Sackoff is out today on iTunes and VOD. “Knock once to wake her from her bed, twice to raise her from the dead…” So goes a disturbing urban legend involving an abandoned house supposedly inhabited by a vengeful, child-stealing witch. When troubled teen Chloe (Lucy Boynton) raps at the door one night, she has no idea the horror she’s about to unleash. Fleeing to the country home of her estranged mother (Katee Sackhoff)—a recovering addict who’s turned her life around to...

There’s nothing better than a vengeful witch to help repair the frayed emotional bonds between a mother and a daughter. That seems to be the message of Caradog James’ horror pic which offers sadly derivative scares but also a surprisingly affecting family drama. If it had skipped the clichéd supernatural elements to instead concentrate on the relationship between the two central characters, Don’t Knock Twice might have emerged as an interesting film.
That the two women are portrayed by Katee Sackhoff and up-and-comer Lucy Boynton (Sing Street) is another plus. The former plays Jess, a recovering addict who was forced...

The power of horror rarely lies in the script. Mood and atmosphere aren’t lines of dialogue or storyboarded action so much as a difficult balancing act every director performs. And while strong directors can elevate subpar scripts, they can’t save plots from themselves. The new supernatural horror film Don’t Knock Twice benefits greatly from the direction of Caradog James. He takes a story that almost immediately plunges viewers into an unexplained and messy mythology and, for the better part of an hour, manages to distract from its weaker aspects by implying something far more interesting. Unfortunately, then the third act happens, and the spell is broken.
This is the second film in a row where James has proven himself a talented orchestrator of complex low-budget genre fare (the first being his little-seen but effective sci-fi thriller The Machine), wringing the most out of a limited budget through...

Mother and child horror films aren’t hard to find, especially these days. The Babadook might be the best of the bunch in recent years, but there’s still Goodnight Mommy, Lyle, the Carrie remake, Prevenge and now, Don’t Knock Twice, starring Battlestar Galactica‘s Katee Sackhoff, which will bring witches and evil spirits into the equation.
The premise is simple enough: a guilt-ridden mother (Sackhoff) tries to save her estranged daughter (Lucy Boynton) from an apparent curse from a vengeful witch, which terrorizes and haunts them, in the vein of Candyman or The Ring. But with its unsettling imagery, disturbing visuals and jarring editing, Don’t Knock Twice — not to be confused with Mike Birbiglia’s Don’t Think Twice from last summer, which is a completely different movie— certainly looks promising. We hope to say the same when it enters theaters, whenever that might be in the United States.

There’s nothing quite like a heartfelt reunion between mother and child after many years apart. The tears, the emotion, the hope for the future, the literal door to hell trying to mess everything up. Wait, what?
Such is the very, very short synopsis of Caradog W. James’ most recent horror offering, “Don’t Knock Twice.” The film follows Jess (Katee Sackoff), a successful American sculptor who returns to the UK — her childhood home, and one fraught with some not-so-great memories — with the hope of rebuilding her relationship with her long-estranged daughter Chloe (Lucy Boynton). Everything seems to be going well when Chloe agrees to live with Jess after nine years apart, but it turns out the troubled teen has another motive for her new home, and it doesn’t involve reconnecting with her mom.

Here’s a treat heading your way soon. Starring Katee Sachoff, Lucy Boynton and Nick Moran, Don’t Knock Twice is a really good horror film that we caught last year. What’s more, it’s finally getting a UK cinema release this coming March. March 31st, to be exact.
It’s directed by Caradog James (The Machine), and both a long and short trailer have been made available for the movie. So let’s crack on and show them to you. The long version is here…
And the shorter promo is here…
What’s that? You want a synopsis for the movie too? Gotcha.
For Jess, life has never been better. A successful American sculptor, she has recently returned to the UK, where she spent much of her troubled youth.

"She opens a doorway between hell, so she can devour the innocent. I think she's coming for me next..." An international trailer has debuted for a horror thriller titled Don't Knock Twice. Not to be confused with the indie comedy about an improv group, Don't Think Twice (which we highly recommend seeing), this film is a creepy horror thriller about a demonic witch. The cast includes Katee Sackhoff, Lucy Boynton, Nick Moran, Javier Botet and Jordan Bolger. This looks dark and moody and scary, most definitely, but it also doesn't look that original or interesting. Just more creepiness lurking in the dark. Give it a look anyway. I've got a trailer here for a new horror thriller starring Katee Sackhoff (Oculus, Riddick, Battlestar Galactica) called Don't Knock Twice. This looks like it could be a fun and creepy horror movie as it deals with a vengeful demonic shape-shifting witch who is out for blood. Here's the synopsis:

Release details have emerged for Caradog James' (The Machine) Don't Knock Twice. IFC Films will show this haunted featured in theatres and via Video-on-demand in early February. The film's story is based on an urban legend, involving a child-stealing witch. Able to change its form, this monster might just be unstoppable. An early, Russian trailer shows Chloe (Lucy Boynton) struggling with the witch's curse. The film also stars: Katee Sackhoff (Longmire), Nick Moran (Lock, Stock and Two Smocking Barrels) and Richard Mylan (Grownups). A look ahead at the home entertainment launch of Don't Knock Twice is hosted here. The urban legend is new to at least one horror fan. The saying goes like this: "knock once to wake her from her bed, twice to raise her from the dead." Once woken, the witch pursues Chloe and Chloe seeks refuge with her mother. Together, they attempt to put the witch back in the grave.

Android sci-fi flick The Machine is becoming a TV show at Universal, as are two more comics - El Pantera and Kill Shakespeare...
Universal Cable Productions' push into geeky genres was already massive (see: their alliance with Dark Horse Comics, for a start), and now it’s got even bigger. Reports yesterday from Comic-Con enlightened us about three new geek-friendly properties on Universal’s TV slate.
First up – The Machine. The low-budget British sci-fi film from writer-director Caradog James, which starred Caity Lotz, will be adapted into a television series for Syfy. As The Hollywood Reporter puts it, The Machine ‘follows a brilliant computer programmer, desperate to save his terminally ill daughter, who creates the first-ever piece of self-aware artificial intelligence. But things go terribly wrong with the technology.’
(If you haven't seen The Machine yet, it's extremely good and well worth tracking down.)

Universal Cable Productions has announced several new projects for its genre development slate, one of which being an adaptation of the 1970s Mexican comic "El Pantera" which Warren Ellis will pen and Gale Anne Hurd will executive produce.
The vigilante crime drama is set on the U.S.-Mexico border and follows a young and newly appointed head of police and his friend as they create an alter ego to rid the city of the Mexican mob.
Also in the works is a Syfy series adaptation of British cult film "The Machine". That film follows a brilliant computer programmer who creates the first-ever piece of self-aware artificial intelligence in a desperate attempt to save his sick daughter - things go awry when the Government get involved. Caradog James, who wrote and directed the film, will pen the TV adaptation.
Finally there's "Kill Shakespeare" which sees the playwright's most famous tragic hero characters (Hamlet,...

With Comic-Con happening this week, there are naturally even more genre projects being touted than normal – and that’s saying something, given how comic books and sci-fi are so dominant at the moment. There are a couple of new ones to report on: 2014’s techno-thriller The Machine is being developed as a TV series and award-wining graphic novel scribe Warren Ellis is adapting Mexican comic El Pantera for Walking Dead producer Gale Anne Hurd. It’s all part of a big announcement from Universal Cable Productions, which has been rounding up more titles to turn into TV series. The Machine will find the movie’s writer/director Caradog W. James working on turning the film’s concept about a scientist working on artificial intelligence to help injured soldiers and his own daughter that is co-opted by the military in the search for a new type of killing machine into a show that can span seasons.

Still best known as Battlestar Galactica's Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, Katee Sackhoff is beginning to carve herself a bit of a niche in the horror genre. Following Oculus and Ghosts Of Georgia (plus Riddick, which had monsters in it), she's now signed up for Don't Knock Twice, a British chiller from The Machine's director Caradog James.Currently wheeling and dealing at Cannes, the film is being pitched as in the vein of Candyman and Ring, revolving around a "psychologically terrifying urban legend". The plot sees a guilt-ridden mother trying to save her estranged daughter from the curse of a vengeful witch. We'll assume Sackhoff is the mother. Unless she's the witch.Caradog's The Machine, starring Toby Stephens and Caity Lotz, got a tiny theatrical release but essentially went straight to DVD and digital. Which was a shame because it's good. Despite that, however, it's built an appreciative worldwide following,...

Caradog W. James's The Machine (review) is not only a really great bit of sci-fi, it comes from a director who is very intelligent, has a sense of humor and really understands the importance of storytelling which is quite likely why the movie is as successful as it is.
I recently had a chance to speak with James regarding the production including the year of research before he even began writing the script, his secret meeting with an MoD employee and how setting a man on fire isn't as easy as it sounds.

Imitation of Life: James’ Sci-Fi Thriller Plumbs Dark Recesses of A.I.
While its ingenious ideas are sometimes marred by obvious budgetary limitations, director Caradog W. James’ second feature, The Machine is a highly enjoyable and brooding sci-fi flick in the philosophical vein of Blade Runner, with a smattering of other similarly minded or styled classics, such as Lang’s Metropolis heavy on its mind. Even though it sometimes looks like a film that seems tailor made for the Syfy Channel, James still manages to create an appropriate atmosphere with its cavernous, dimly lit underground bunkers. An arresting and ambient score reminiscent of Vangelis and early John Carpenter is complimentary to its simple yet hypnotic spell.
In the not too distant future, the UK seems to be languishing in the throes of the preapocalypse as the Western world is heavily engaged in a Cold War with China. The government...

The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes: Pfister’s Debut Oversteps Limited Reach
Hopes were perhaps set a bit too high for the directorial debut of Wally Pfister, whose work as cinematographer for Christopher Nolan’s three Batman films and a cast headlined by Johnny Depp made Transcendence seem promising, at the very least. But to say that Pfister’s debut is merely disappointing would be a polite euphemism, for it fails on every conceivable level, unsure of whether it wants to be a romantic drama, a hi-tech thriller, or a lesson in the dangers of advancement and dependence on artificial intelligence. Worse, the film’s shockingly lackluster visual artistry can’t even awe or distract us away from the empty headedness transpiring on screen.

When does focus turn into obsession? Is sacrificing others for the one you love a declaration of that love or is it simply selfishness disguised? What is it to be human and what defines it? These are familiar themes in sci-fi. They are explored once again in The Machine, the new sci-fi/thriller from Caradog W. James. Vincent (Toby Stephens) is a genius. He has created brain implants and limb replacements and is very good at what he does. After a mishap that leaves a colleague dead, he is put underground to work on more intense research, creating Artificial Intelligence driven machines for the Ministry of Defense.

I was once told that the amount of data you could fit on a microchip doubles every 2 years. It’s referred to as Moore’s law, and the more I think about it, the scarier it gets. When you boil down human beings to their most fundamental brain activity, we essentially get a gigantic, almost infinite list of yes/no decisions – the key word there being “almost.” There will be a point, maybe far off, maybe closer than we’d like to think, where an entire person’s thought process will be able to fit on a hard drive.
It’s a slightly creepy prospect, more than matched by the proposition of artificial intelligence as a now genuinely possible scientific breakthrough. Humanity’s capacity to learn is limited by their mortal bounds – our brains can only think so fast and hold so much information – but this theoretic super computer has no such restraints.
