Often in cinema, and certainly in the documentary format, there is an expectation that is projected onto audiences, of an unashamed desire for conflict. Perhaps aided by the rise in True Crime mini-series on the likes of Netflix, with a popularity that suggests a thirst for morbidity amongst viewers. But there is something to be said about simply delving into the life of an inherently good-hearted, affable (and unproblematic) subject. On this occasion the aforementioned individual is former footballer Jermain Defoe, who hung up his boots in 2022 after a decorated and illustrious career, scoring goals, and a lot of goals at that, for both club and country.
Directed by James Ross, there’s an in-built affection here for his subject, as we follow Defoe in his life post-retirement, as he, like all other ex-pros, must mould a new path for himself, be it in the sport, with opportunities in punditry and coaching,...

The West Ham and Tottenham striker considers a rags-to-riches career that began as a schoolkid, and the scandals that followed, with unusual openness
On the face of it Jermain Defoe, former Tottenham and England goal ace, is perhaps a slightly unlikely figure to get his own documentary, even in this era of wall-to-wall streaming events. He never quite achieved the super-elite status of his England colleagues Wayne Rooney or Steven Gerrard; nor has he established a similarly fond niche in the public imagination as Peter Crouch, whom he partnered up front at both Portsmouth and Tottenham. In fact, Defoe’s story, as outlined here, is in some ways the rags-to-riches tale common to many footballers in the modern era, though perhaps more turbocharged than most given his obvious precocity as a schoolkid.
Defoe offers a disarming kind of honesty, mulling over the effect on his life of his largely absent father who,...

"It's not just about football... It's more than just kickin' a ball." Kaleidoscope Ent. in the UK has revealed an official trailer for a sports biopic documentary titled Defoe – a defining portrait of one of England's greatest goal-scorers, Jermain Defoe. As a player for many Premier League teams, this is obviously set for a UK release first, opening in February with a one night screening event and Q&a. Mixing remarkable interviews with Jermain, his family, fellow players and managers, including Harry Redknapp, Peter Crouch, and Joe Cole, and iconic archive footage – this inspiring, honest and unexpectedly heart-warming doc film explores how football gave Jermain Defoe both great success on the pitch and so much more beyond it, offering a fascinating insight into the life and career of one of England's most prolific high-profile scorers. ⚽ Director James Ross adds: "Though I knew his goals on the pitch, I never expected...

The story of footballer Jermain Defoe is being told in a new documentary feature, coming to UK cinemas in February.
The latest sporting figure to be the subject of a feature documentary? That’s Jermain Defoe, the former football star who played for clubs such as West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland, Rangers and Portsmouth in a career that spanned nearly 25 years.
Defoe was awarded an OBE in 2018, for his work with the Jermain Defoe foundation, that supports vulnerable and homeless children.
The documentary feature has been directed by James Ross and produced by Naomi Notice. Defoe contributes to it as well, alongside names such as Sandra Defoe, Gemma Lowery (the mother of the late and inspirational youngster Bradley Lowery), Harry Redknapp, Joe Cole and Peter Crouch.
Kaleidoscope is distributing the film, which will be in UK cinemas on February 29th 2024. If it follows the usual pattern of these things,...

Soccer Aid for Unicef 2023, broadcast live and exclusively on ITV1, Stv and Itvx last week from Old Trafford, Manchester, has raised £14.6 million for Unicef’s vital work giving children around the world the happy, healthy, play-filled childhoods they are entitled to.
Thanks to the generous support of the UK public, Unicef UK supporters, ITV1, Stv and Itvx viewers, this year’s amount brings the current total raised to date, since Soccer Aid for Unicef was founded by Unicef UK Ambassador Robbie Williams in 2006, to over £90 million for children worldwide.
The hotly anticipated match took place at the sold-out Old Trafford stadium in Manchester – welcoming back over 63,000 fans to the same venue that hosted the very first Soccer Aid for Unicef match in 2006. The match ended 4-2 to Soccer Aid World XI, with the team keeping the overall lead with 7-5 wins since the inaugural 2006 match.

West Ham United may have spent the first six months of the 2015-16 Premier League campaign in the top half of the table, but experiencing such lofty heights has been a rare occurrence in previous years.
Since 1993, the East London outfit have only finished in eighth position or above on three occasions, something which was last achieved during 2001-2002 when the likes of Michael Carrick, Joe Cole and Jermain Defoe plied their trade for the Hammers.
Despite twice being relegated to the second tier of English football since that year, West Ham have always been considered an attractive option for players looking to impress in the Premier League, but like with many clubs, they find themselves in the position of acting as a stepping stone for players who believe their future lies elsewhere.
In some cases, that has been inevitable. When Alan Pardew pulled off one...

West Ham striker Andy Carroll is a target for both Sunderland and former club Newcastle – and the Hammers would be willing to sell the hulking forward for £18million, according to reports from Shoot.co.uk.
Despite struggling with injuries, Carroll has recently returned to fitness and looks to be in good form, notching a goal in each of his last two league appearances (including an opportunistic headed winner against Southampton).
Both Newcastle and Sunderland are struggling through a difficult Premier League campaign, currently sitting in 18th and 19th place respectively. Of the two teams, the Magpies have struggled to find the net most, with strikers Aleksander Mitrovic, Ayoze Perez, and (now-injured) Papiss Cisse struggling to find the net on a regular basis.
Sunderland are a slightly different kettle of fish, and have benefitted immensely from the goalscoring instincts of veteran frontman Jermain Defoe. However, a successful...

The last few seasons have been a struggle on Wearside, and plenty of good managers have all paid the price of failure. One of the most surprising aspects of the team’s demise is that there are actually some fairly decent players hidden in the squad.
FIFA 16 gives you the opportunity to ditch the losing mentality surrounding the club and simply play to their potential. Jeremain Lens, Jermain Defoe, Yann M’Vila and Younes Kaboul are all more than capable in the game, and they come with a supporting cast worthy of a very respectable finish.
There are plenty of handy hints to be given if you’re to stand any chance of surviving an entire season, a somewhat rare feat for Sunderland managers nowadays. Who to sign, who to sell, which tactic to use, and which hidden gem to unearth…

A couple of weeks ago, Sunderland fans were gearing up for the start of the season with characteristic optimism. Everything would be better this year, under the watchful, experienced eye of Dick Advocaat. Weak elements such as Liam Bridcutt and Will Buckley were gradually being phased out of the squad, while new signing Jeremain Lens was all set to be the brightest prospect at the Stadium of Light in years.
Now two games in, and the Black Cats’ season is already threatening to self-destruct. A promising start at Leicester soon gave way to three quick goals, from which Jermain Defoe and Steven Fletcher could only salvage a 4-2 loss. The next game, at home to Norwich, was even worse, a performance lacking in both quality and (more distressingly) effort. It finished 3-1 to the Canaries, leaving Sunderland rock bottom of the table already, after a supposedly “easy” couple of opening fixtures.

Fenerbahce board member Mahmut Uslu has confirmed that Moussa Sow would be available to Sunderland for approximately £9million, according to ClubCall.com.
The Senegalese striker has scored an impressive 51 goals in 102 league appearances for the Istanbul side, yet only has a relatively low release clause of €13million, if Uslu is to be believed.
This would be good news for Sunderland, who recently sent Connor Wickham to Crystal Palace, leaving the senior squad with only three out-and-out strikers in the form of Jermain Defoe, Danny Graham, and Steven Fletcher. The trio have all scored relatively inconsistently since arriving at the Stadium of Light, making a regular goalscorer something of a priority for the Black Cats.

With Connor Wickham now officially a Crystal Palace player, Sunderland face entering the 2015/16 Premier League campaign with only the ragtag trio of Steven Fletcher, Danny Graham and Jermain Defoe up top. A guaranteed goalscorer is a necessity, and although Wickham was never that kind of player himself, his departure should give the Black Cats enough financial wiggle-room to bring in an upgrade.
Dick Advocaat has remained carefully quiet throughout this transfer window, but will surely have a set of options lined up. The speed with which Younes Kaboul was signed (following the break down of Nicolas Lombaerts’ move from Zenit) hints at a far more organised Sunderland than fans have been used to in previous summers.
Wide forward Jeremain Lens certainly seems a step in the right direction for the Black Cats, but a more central striker remains key. Fletcher is a constant injury worry, age is catching up with Defoe,...

Crystal Palace have agreed a fee for Sunderland striker Connor Wickham, according to Sky Sports.
Aside from a good spell of form during the 2013/14 relegation dogfight, Wickham has largely failed to impress in his four years at the Stadium of Light, but has clearly caught the eye of Eagles boss Alan Pardew.
The Croydon Advertiser seems to think that Wickham’s fee lies somewhere north of £10m, an amount far larger than many Sunderland fans would expect, given the 22 year old’s underwhelming return of 11 goals in 74 Premier League matches.
Wickham’s departure could well signal Dick Advocaat’s intention of buying a replacement striker before the close of the transfer window, with Jermain Defoe, Steven Fletcher and Danny Graham the only senior frontmen remaining.

Sunderland have confirmed the signing of Dutch international Jeremain Lens, for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £9,000,000. An offer was rejected by Dynamo Kyiv last week, only for the Black Cats to return with an improved bid in order to land their man.
The 27 year old seems a perfect fit for Dick Advocaat’s 4-3-3 formation, capable of being deployed in a wide attacking role or as an out-and-out striker.
Lens came through the ranks at Az Alkmaar before earning a move to Psv Eindhoven, where he proved his versatility by playing on both flanks, as well as occasionally operating in a “second striker” role behind the main forward. He played under Advocaat at both teams, forming a bond which is seen as instrumental in his decision to move to Sunderland.

Jermain Defoe has told the Sunderland Echo that he wants to return to his natural position as the spearhead of attack in time for the new Premier League season.
The experienced striker has spent much of his time on Wearside in a wide left role, supporting fellow strikers Danny Graham, Steven Fletcher and Connor Wickham, rather than acting as the main goalscoring threat himself. During last season’s relegation battle, he was also encouraged to track back extensively by Dick Advocaat, helping shore up the defence and securing the points needed for survival.
But Defoe has told the Echo that he has aspirations of returning to his usual central role, stating:
“You want to play in your favourite position; the position you’ve been playing in for your whole career. I’ve never played on the left wing in my whole career. I’m not a left winger,...

Over the years, Sunderland have made some shrewd moves.
Kevin Phillips was snapped up for just £325,000 from Watford back in 1997 and went on to win the European Golden Boot. Simon Mignolet was signed for £2 million before his impressive form led to a £10 million switch to Liverpool.
And even more recently, Jermain Defoe’s ‘no money involved’ swap move from Toronto is looking like a fantastic piece of business.
But for every one transfer that the Black Cats have got right, it seems like another five have gone horribly wrong.
In times of dire need, a team might splash the cash on a proven goalscorer to find he’s nothing more than a joke on legs. Sometimes a well-considered loan move to re-ignite a team’s season could result in a player barely touching the ball. And on rare occasions it’s been known for...

With Newcastle apparently actively looking at striking options this winter thanks to their inability to bring another striking target in at the end of the summer window – and the complication of the African Nations duties of Papiss Cisse – talk is inevitably turning to who could be on the radar.
Already this season we’ve seen links to Jermain Defoe on loan, Paul-Georges Ntep of Stade Rennais, Danny Ings, Andre-Pierre Gignac and Seydou Doumbia, the Ivorian talisman at Cska Moscow, and with November on the way, it won’tbe long before every day sees fresh speculation.
Whether Newcastle will be having all of those targets assessed remains to be seen – some will undoubtedly be under scrutiny already – but one player has already been ruled out, according to the Chronicle. Luc Castaignos of Twenet was one of the names thrown up when options were discussed, but according to unnamed “sources” from the banned newspaper,...

West Ham have long had the reputation of a ‘feeder’ club, highlighted most prominently by the 2003 season which saw countless players including many academy players leave following the club’s relegation. A team which included stars such as Jermain Defoe, Paulo Di Canio, Joe Cole, Frederic Kanoute and Glen Johnson, saw these players all leave in following season’s transfer windows to varying endeavours. Other notable players such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick were sold on at the beginnings of what could have been illustrious careers at West Ham.
Frank Lampard is a prime example of a player that went on to great post-West Ham success with Chelsea, but the decision to leave West Ham has not been a wise one for everyone. Whether higher expectations for money or an ambition for a bigger club, players have left in search of something more; something that they failed to find.

Qpr owner Tony Fernandes has just spoken to Sky Sports News to state that any move for Fabio Borini is highly unlikely. The major issue according to the former F1 team owner is that player expectations and agent expectations are too much of an impediment at the minute, and it’s not likely that anything can be negotiated before the end of the transfer window.
Borini had long been linked with a move to Sunderland, but with Sebastian Coates joining the Black Cats the chance to sign him on loan has disappeared, and Qpr had seemed to leap into the lead as the favourites to sign the Italian.
Sadly now for Qpr fans, Borini looks unlikely, though there is some good news as a move for Sandro is almost complete, and Rangers are still trying to make something happen to reunite Harry Redknapp with Jermain Defoe,...

Regardless of how much Newcastle need a striker to help ease the burden on the young and injured options currently around the first team, and of how many goals he has scored in the Premier League, £7m for 31-year-old Jermain Defoe is a lot of money.
Whether it is too much remains to be seen, but it seems strange that Newcastle would even be linked to the striker, even if he scored 11 goals in 16 games for John Carver’s former side Toronto Fc. He’s not exactly within the usual boundaries for signing players, but the only thing that should really matter here is whether Newcastle would profit from his experience in real terms. Or in other words, whether he would be able to score the goals Alan Pardew needs to get his first league win of the season.

Having already cut nine deals this summer, and with very little precedent of doing anything really positive in the final day of the transfer window, Newcastle fans could be forgiven for ignoring Sky Sports News and Twitter as much as possible but there may still be business to be done.
According to David Craig, who is currently in residence outside Newcastle’s training ground, Newcastle are still trying to sign Atletico Madrid’s Belgian centre-half Toby Alderweireld, despite strong links to Southampton, and that they are one of the clubs who could be in for Jermain Defoe.
Alderweireld is on the verge of leaving Atletico – with a loan move suggested – having seen his first-team opportunities restricted last year, and would suit Newcastle’s need to strengthen at the back. It has been said that Newcastle would need to move players on first, but with Roma supposedly...

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club face West Ham United this weekend in their vital Premier League opener. The Lilywhites travel to the Boleyn Ground on Saturday in the hope of avenging the three defeats the Hammers inflicted upon them so famously last season.
It has been a summer of change at White Hart Lane, with a complete coaching team overhaul that includes a new manager in former Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino – but there has been very little by way of transfer activity.
Spurs have signed both Michel Vorm and Ben Davies from Swansea City and Eric Dier from Sporting Clube de Portugal – and that’s it. In fact, they’ve brought more money in through player sales than they have spent on new signings.
There have been no truly big money signings to speak of and no strikers brought in at all. That’s quite surprising when you...

Mexican striker Javier Hernandez has been told by Mexico boss Miguel Herrera that he should leave Manchester United after the World Cup if he wants to keep being selected for his national side.
The diminutive striker has been limited mostly to substitute appearances at Old Trafford since his 2010 arrival, but this has not prevented “Chicharito” from starring for his country in that period and he has an extremely impressive international record of 35 goals in 58 games – but that could seemingly change unless he plays more first team minutes at club level.
Tottenham Hotspur have long been linked with signing the striker and would no doubt be interested, should Manchester United make him available. Spurs would, however, reportedly face competition from the likes of Premier League rivals Aston Villa and Italian giants Inter Milan.

Tottenham Hotspur academy product Harry Kane has made a turbulent start to his professional career at White Hart Lane. Kane made his first senior appearance for the White Hart Lane club back in 2011 when, as an 18 year old, he started in a Europa League match at home to Scottish club Hearts.
Prior to that game, Kane had played on loan at Leyton Orient and has since been on loan to Millwall, Leicester City and Norwich City – slowly making his way upwards in terms of quality – and has seen game time at Spurs hard to come by, given that the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor, Jermain Defoe and Roberto Soldado have all been in front of him in the pecking order (and when he has been given chances in the past, he hasn’t exactly shone).

In a final flurry of transfer activity towards the end of the winter window, West Ham moved two players off their books.
Despite the limited options available to boss Sam Allardyce in the final third, the Hammers allowed Mobido Maiga to leave on loan for Qpr (despite the usual comedy assertions by Harry Redknapp that no more business would be done – cue two more deals and a cheeky attempt to sign Jermain Defoe on loan) until the end of the season.
Maiga has been a mixed bag since joining from Sochaux back in July 2012 after a well-publicised failed medical at Newcastle United, scoring just 3 goals in 31 appearances for the Hammers. The Malian has been forced down the pecking order recently with the return of Andy Carroll, the contract extension for Carlton Cole and the transfer window loan signing of Marco Borriello from Roma, and he will now...

Fulham’s Dimitar Berbatov has snubbed a return to former club Tottenham Hostpur in favour of a loan move to French big spenders Monaco.
The 33-year-old – who was first introduced to Premier League fans through his exploits at White Hart Lane – spurned the chance to return to help Spurs’ Champions League campaign in order to aid the Principality’s tilt at the French Ligue 1 and provide an emergency back-up for Falcao, who is out until the end of the season.
With many clubs interested in the Bulgarian’s signature – alongside Spurs, Arsenal were rumoured to be in the running – Berbatov’s status as a player at Craven Cottage was under threat, and with Fulham’s £12 million signing of Greek forward Kostas Mitrioglu speculation only intensified.
But despite interest from Tim Sherwood and the Spurs backroom staff, the former Manchester United man chose to head for pastures new...

Tottenham have become victims of an elaborate transfer fraud involving Fc Twente player Luc Castaignos, according to the BBC.
Spurs were handed a document supposedly signed by Twente’s chairman, only to discover the signature had been forged by a Croatian middleman trying to sell them the Dutch striker.
The Croat was rumbled when the London club contacted Twente and uncovered the rouse.
The Dutch side later confirmed the forgery, stating:
A player has been offered with this forged document. The forgery has been made known to the Knvb (Dutch Football Federation), with the request to pass it on to Uefa and Fifa and take the appropriate measures.
Gert-Jan Nijweide, Fc Twente’s finance director, said:
We have recently been informed of this scam from England. We have sent a letter to the persons who have used the false document, ordering them to stop immediately.

Tottenham Hotspur are to hold talks with Lille and former Chelsea attacker Salomon Kalou over a possible transfer to White Hart Lane.
Friday’s Daily Mail reports that Ivory Coast international Kalou, 28, is a £2.6 million target for Spurs head coach Tim Sherwood. The player is heading to London to begin negotiations as a fee has yet to be agreed.
Kalou spent six years at Stamford Bridge between 2006 and 2012, winning seven major trophies including the Premier League, four Fa Cups and the Champions League. He scored 60 goals in 251 matches for the Blues.
After lifting the European Cup under Roberto Di Matteo, Kalou moved to Ligue 1 outfit Lille on a free transfer. Last season he hit 16 goals in all competitions, 14 of which came in the French league.
Kalou began his club career in the Dutch Eredivisie with Feyenoord and has been to five major international tournaments with the Ivory Coast.

We’re almost mid-way through the January transfer window and so far the 20 Premier League teams have had a quiet month.
The biggest deal involving a topflight club thus far is the completion of Jermain Defoe’s £6 million move from Tottenham to Mls outfit Toronto Fc, with very little else to shout about.
And, while it seems the majority of sides appear to be happy with what they’ve got, that surely cannot be true of Manchester United.
The faltering champions have had a dire season thus far under new manager David Moyes and, since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, have found themselves languishing mid-table.
The cracks that started to appear during Ferguson’s reign have now burst open and Moyes surely cannot afford a second transfer window of inactivity following last year’s debacles.

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has agreed to join Major League Soccer side Toronto Fc and will complete his move next month, according to Team Talk.
The 31-year-old will not secure the switch until February 28, meaning he is still eligible to play for Spurs and could still feature in crunch games against Manchester City and Everton.
But he will end his five-year association with the White Hart Lane club for a second time, having also played for the Londoners between 2004-08.
Defoe, who has played more than 250 games for Spurs and last year became Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer in Europe after surpassing Martin Chivers’s long-standing record, said:

Premier League champions Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have drawn their last two meetings. They start 2014 level on points and next to one another in the table both looking to close the gap on the top four.
David Moyes’s Red Devils have hit fine form in their festive fixtures by recording six successive victories after failing to win the first three matches in December. Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood meanwhile got the second win of his reign against Stoke on Sunday.
Spurs are also buoyed by the fact they won on their last visit to Old Trafford in September 2012. Clint Dempsey netted the winner then, but has re-joined former club Fulham on loan from Mls franchise Seattle Sounders.

Spurs stopped the rot after a bad week that saw them sack Andre Villas-Boas and crash out of the League Cup by beating Southampton on the South Coast.
Emmanuel Adebayor’s double and a Jos Hooiveld own goal got Tottenham three welcome points here. They had fallen behind to an opener from Saints skipper Adam Lallana and were later pegged back to 2-2 by Rickie Lambert.
Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino rotated youngsters Luke Shaw and James Ward-Prowse for more senior heads Danny Fox and Morgan Schneiderlin. Summer signing Dani Osvaldo made way for Lallana too from the team that drew up at Newcastle last time out.
Tottenham caretaker Tim Sherwood made four changes from the League Cup quarter-final exit to West Ham. England attacking trio Andros Townsend, Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe joined Etienne Capoue in making way. Michael Dawson, Christian Eriksen, Erik Lamela and Roberto Soldado returned.

Tim Sherwood remains in caretaker charge of Tottenham after Andre Villas-Boas was sacked this week. Gareth Bale, who has since been sold to Real Madrid, came back to haunt the Saints as he scored in Hotspur colours in a 2-1 win in the corresponding fixture last season.

Tottenham Hotspur can move level on points with opponents Liverpool by winning at White Hart Lane on Sunday. Andre Villas Boas’s side have found their shooting boots in December after netting ten times in their last four outings.
Much-maligned Spanish striker Roberto Soldado silenced his critics by hitting a hat-trick in the midweek Europa League win over once wealthy Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala. That ensured Spurs made it a perfect six wins in the group stage.
Brendan Rodgers meanwhile takes his Reds to Tottenham knowing they have lost on each of their last five Premier League visits. There is every incentive to change that losing habit at the Lane as three points will restore the Merseysiders to second spot behind Arsenal.
Liverpool have not won an away from Anfield since the end of September, however, and have picked up just two points from the last dozen available on the road.

Wayne Rooney bagged a brace as Manchester United twice came from behind at White Hart Lane to hold Tottenham Hotspur. The hosts registered through Kyle Walker’s free kick and a stunner from Sandro.
This slow burning contest saw goalmouth action markedly absent early on. Aaron Lennon produced a tame effort off his weaker foot, so it trickled through to David De Gea for the hosts.
Sandro then had to be on hand to block Rooney’s effort after Vlad Chiriches cheaply ceded possession. Spurs went ahead on 18 minutes after surviving that Red Devils scare.
Jonny Evans fouled Paulinho on the edge of the box and up stepped Tottenham right back Walker, who fired a low free kick under the wall and past De Gea.
Spurs skipper Michael Dawson then saw a shot blocked by Rooney as he turned a right wing corner towards United’s goal.

The Daily Mail reported yesterday that Jermain Defoe has agreed a January move to Mls side Toronto. It’s reported that the transfer fee is in the region of £6 million with a salary around £90,000 per week. Therefore, I thought it was a good idea to put together a slideshow on why it’s a good move for him and what it means for the Mls.
Overall, the key thing is for Defoe to be playing more regular football in the first team, something that Andre Villas-Boas doesn’t seem keen to do, especially in the league. We all know about his quality, so this move should be good for him, especially if he can become a focal point of their attack, rather than the fringe player he is at the moment with Spurs.
So, let’s get started by looking at why this is a key move for him…...

Mls side Toronto Fc have beaten off competition from the Premier League to land Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe in a £6 million deal, according to the Mirror.
Defoe has agreed an incredible £90,000-a-week switch to the Canadian club, having snubbed interest from West Ham and Qpr, the latter bossed by former manager Harry Redknapp.
The move will be completed when the January transfer window opens in just over a month and will mean the 31-year-old England international will end his career outside of Europe.
Defoe will discuss the implications for his 2014 World Cup prospects with Three Lions manager Roy Hodgson, after accepting a four year contract in Canada.
It is thought the former Portsmouth player said yes to the move abroad last week, with the news coming as a crushing blow to other interested parties such as the Hammers and Qpr.
Both were keen but were ultimately gazumped by Toronto’s bid,...

“Ashamed,” was the word used by Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas after his side’s crushing 6-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, and few could disagree.
From start to finish, the title outsiders proved why they won’t come close to challenging for league honours this season, a worrying conclusion to what had been a very encouraging opening few months for the club.
Before the game the team had one of the best defensive records in the league, conceding just six goals, and they duly doubled that tally in a result that was their heaviest defeat in the league since 1996.
Just 14 seconds into the game at the Etihad and the tone was set, with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris messing up a clearance that fell straight to Sergio Aguero, whose shot was saved by the Spurs keeper, but was then followed up by Jesus Navas who fired home the opener.

Tottenham Hotspur qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League with a 2-1 win over Moldovan outfit Sheriff Tiraspol at White Hart Lane.
Erik Lamela opened the scoring after a goalless first half before winning a penalty which Jermain Defoe converted to become the club’s outright leading scorer in Europe.
Bulgarian attacker Ismail Isa pulled one back for Sheriff later on, but Andre Villas-Boas’s side saw out their fourth group stage victory. Defoe went clear of Martin Chivers, breaking a Tottenham record that had stood for almost 40 years, by netting the winner here.
Spurs qualify for the last 32 of Europe’s B competition with two games to spare. Avb made nine changes for Sheriff’s visit and will now be able to rest key players again in the next fixture away to Russian strugglers Anzhi Makhachkala.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson earns a recall and right back Glen Johnson returns. Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere has also been included despite an ankle injury. Gunners pair Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remain sidelined.
Hodgson has selected three left backs for the Wembley dates in Leighton Baines (Everton), Ashley Cole (Chelsea) and Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal). Raheem Sterling drops down onto the Under-21 roster.

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has been offered a huge £5 million-a-year offer to move to Canadian club Toronto Fc in the New Year, according to the Mirror.
The Mls outfit have put a stunning package – including a £90,000-a-week salary – on the table for the England international in a bid to pry him away from White Hart Lane.
They face competition from Queens Park Rangers, however, whose boss Harry Redknapp wants to be reunited with the 31-year-old following their time together at Spurs and Portsmouth.
Redknapp sees Defoe as the ideal player to spearhead his side’s Championship promotion push back into the Premier League following relegation from the topflight last season.
The forward has scored eight goals from his 13 appearances so far this term but is behind Roberto Soldado in the pecking order.

Despite already being relatively short in numbers in the top quality striker department, Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas is set to be open to the idea of no less than three of his current crop leaving in the January transfer window.
Youngster Harry Kane, who is yet to make an impact at Spurs despite being a star performer at under 21 level for his country, is said to be a loan target for Swindon Town – a club where no less than three Spurs youngsters are already out on loan and performing well (Grant Hall, Alex Pritchard and Ryan Mason respectively). Kane has already been loaned out to Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City and given how well the loan policy at the club worked with the likes of Kyle Walker and Andros Townsend, this may be an ongoing developmental plan with regards to the striker.

Spurs won 2-0 on Thursday night in a surprisingly difficult game in Moldova against Fc Sheriff Tiraspol.
The White Hart Lane club scored one goal in each half – one from Jan Vertonghen and one from Jermain Defoe (who equalled Martin Chivers’ 22 goal European haul for the club) – despite the fact that they were actually the poorer team for a decent chunk of the game.
The win puts Spurs on nine points with three wins out of three at the top of Group K – five points clear of nearest rivals Anzhi – but they still haven’t quite qualified for the next round mathematically yet.
In the end, Andre Villas-Boas, the Spurs team and their fans will have been relieved to have come away with three points from this one – and indeed another clean sheet to maintain their record of not having conceded a goal in the Europa League...

Tottenham are set to reignite their interest in Christian Benteke by making a £28 million bid for the Aston Villa striker in January, according to the Daily Star.
The Belgian was a target for Spurs over the summer and a move looked certain when he handed in a transfer request, only to then withdraw it and sign a new four-year contract at Villa Park.
However, that hasn’t deterred the Lilywhites, with manager Andre Villas-Boas set to try his luck again in the New Year as he seeks to continue his side’s incredible spending spree this season.
The Portuguese boss shelled out over £100 million on the likes of Roberto Soldado, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela in the last window to compensate for the world-transfer-record sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.
But the spending doesn’t look to stop there with Spurs keen to offload Jermain Defoe...

West Ham United scored three second-half goals in 13 minutes to convincingly see past London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The visitors initially posed the biggest threat from set pieces, but failed to make the pressure count in the first half. The home side did have the better of the first 45 minutes, and may have felt they should have been ahead.
Andros Townsend came close with two first half strikes which both fizzed wide, and he nearly set up striker Jermain Defoe for a simple tap-in, but the England international failed to reach his pass.
After the break, it was West Ham who took the lead through Winston Reid. The Hammers defender hit a right-footed effort in the area to break the deadlock in the 66th minute.
Ricardo Vaz Te doubled the visitors’ lead minutes later, after Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris saved his initial effort, but couldn’t stop him from putting in the rebound.
