Shastry Viruddh Shastry (streaming on Netflix)
Starring Paresh Rawal, Neena Kulkarni, Shiv Pundit, Mimi Chakraborty
Directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee, Nandita Roy
Viacom 18 is fast acquiring the reputation of being producers who kill their own films, for reasons that are more fiscal than creative. They did it to the wonderful Dhak Dhak and now to Shastry Viruddh Shastry, a thoughtful if somewhat sluggish remake of a very successful Bengali film Posto.
The story of an unusual custody battle, Shatry Viruddh Shastry sees a 7-year old boy’s grandparents, played by Paresh Rawal and Neena Kulkarni who are no match to Soumitra Chatterjee and Lily Chakraborty in the original, fighting to keep their grandson with them.
Paresh plays a classical musician Manohar who along with his wife Urmila (Neena Kulkarni) looks after their grandchild Momoji (Kabir Pahwa) in Panchgani (the original film was set in Shantiniketan). When the child’s parents...

CinemaWhile Konkana Sen Sharma portrays two empowered women who want to enjoy their sexuality in her short ‘The Mirror’, Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar show a sensitive and nuanced understanding of caste in their web series ‘Dahaad’.In Konkana Sen Sharma’s short The Mirror from Netflix’s Lust Stories 2, a migraine forces Ishita (a brilliant Tillotama Shome) to return home from work one afternoon, where to her horror she finds her domestic worker Seema (a terrific Amruta Subhash) having sex on her bed. Ishita runs out of her house embarrassed and grossed out, not only to have walked in on her ‘maid’ having sex but in her own house and on her own bed. Disgusted, she calls her friend Sameera, who demands that she fire Seema immediately, but Ishita doesn’t have the energy to deal with losing help. Later, she changes the bedsheet only to try masturbating...

Netflix’s recently released sequel of their famous anthology from 2018, Lust Stories, is back with more stories, new actors, and new directors helming the project and helping the audience understand the concept of lust from new points of view. The 2018 one had diverse stories about the female body and needs, and it created quite a buzz, especially the short film featuring Kiara Advani. Lust Stories is an important part of the Netflix India releases because, as the country is obsessed with Hindi cinema and the industry is filled with love stories, it is fascinating to understand what happens before and after ‘they lived happily ever after’ and what would be their way to sustain the love.
This time around, there are also tales of exploring sensual pleasure from a female perspective, but not all of them landed the way they should have. Out of the four stories presented to the viewers,...

Mumbai, July 1 (Ians) Actress-director Konkona Sen Sharma, who has been receiving a lot of positive response to her short film in the streaming anthology ‘Lust Stories 2’, shared that she struggled in the early part of her acting career to look a certain way and “to fit in.”
Konkona’s short film, which stars Tillotama Shome and Amruta Subhash as the lead characters, explores female gaze and voyeurism.
Sharing her thoughts on the existing stereotypes around women and their need for sexual and romantic pleasure, Konkona Sen Sharma said: “Very often, the bodies that are allowed to feel the sexual/romantic pleasure are very limited because usually they have to be thin, fair, rich and young – that was the fourth factor. So usually only those kinds of bodies are allowed to desire and also there have been certain limitations in terms of how people from different economic backgrounds are portrayed.

The last time Konkona Sen Sharma directed something, it was 2017. A year after that, the first installment of Netflix’s Lust Stories was released. Sex used to be a bigger taboo in India back then, so content like that was bound to get all the attention. Especially with four of the big names of Bollywood directing one segment each, Lust Stories was destined for popularity. However, from a cinematic point-of-view, it was not particularly great. Three out of the four directors, Kashyap, KJo, and Zoya Akhtar, treated lust as some kind of forbidden fruit and put a woman at the center of the story, which effectively villainized them.
I am sure you all have seen the “Kiara Advani TV remote” video and so many edits of that all over the internet over the past six years. While that particular segment was supposed to be a representation of female empowerment, the result was actually the opposite,...

Lust Stories 2(Netflix)
Lost in lust, or perhaps the hit lust… such mischievous descriptions spring to mind as we watch an extremely sexual Grandma in Balki’s story played by Neena Gupta about whom her screen-son Ayushman Khurrana had famously said she doesn’t give those “Maa wali vibes”.
Here in the second part of Lust Stories, Gupta gives herself a gala time as a grandmom counselling her grandchild Mrunal Thakur(who giggles her way through her perky part) to have sex with her fiancée(Angad Bedi looking visibly uncomfortable with barely six lines to speak) before marrying him.
Horny Granma’s logic is, “Even when you buy car you first test-drive it.” Right.
I have never come across a grandma like Gupta in R Balki’s warm and well-meaning segment in this four-part saga where one story, like Neeraj Ghaywan’s Geeli Pucchi in the Karan Johar anthology...

ReviewPregnancy is a time of tumultuous change in a woman’s life, and the film acknowledges this; yet, there appears to be a hesitation to really get into the frustrating and ugly challenges that women face.Sowmya RajendranA still from Wonder Women: Instagram/ Sony Liv IndiaAll through the pandemic, as Ott platforms released anthology films on the experiences of people in lockdown, I waited for at least one filmmaker to make a movie about mothers and their struggle to manage home and work with schools closed for two long years. We had films about lovers, the elderly, married couples with problems – but not a single story representing how women coped with young children during those uncertain, depressing days. This isn’t a contradiction in a country that glorifies pregnancy and motherhood; it is because we’re so fond of glorifying both that we don’t want to acknowledge any narrative...

Dhamaka(Netflix)
Starring Kartik Aaryan, Amruta Subhash, Mrunal Thakur
Directed by Ram Madhvani
Dhamaka is a stinging slap in the face of sponsored journalism where money and not the conscience, and certainly not the welfare of humanity, guides the television anchor to scream blatant lies. All is well as long as the lies sell. And sell everything for TRPs.
There is a defining moment in this tense tale of the teacher and the ‘taut’ where our conscience-stricken journalist-hero blurts out to his boss, “Yeh sach nahin hai.”
“Haan, yeh news hai,” the boss reminds Arjun.
The boss(fed into Arjun’s phone as ‘Ankita Boss’) is a hardnosed ruthless media vulture played with characteristic spunk by Amruta Subhash. She will do anything to get the TRPs rolling. A bank CEO's son runs over a lower-class boy. The victim's poor parent spots a get-rich-quick scheme through blackmail. A public scandal could end the CEO's career and so it is best to pay up, and then pay some more.
Sounds like standard soap opera drama? Okay, imagine the picture again: The bank CEO is a woman fighting to hold onto that position, in an otherwise all-male board of directors waiting with bated breath to bring her down. The victim's parent is a sex worker, who has incidentally serviced the CEO's son who will run over her boy, only minutes before the incident takes place.
Alankrita Srivastava's web series uses many familiar vignettes to set up a slice of Mumbai, with its hopes, despairs, dreams and struggles.

Mumbai, March 5: Filmmaker Alankrita Shrivastava, whose web series Bombay Begums will soon be streamed, says that making women-oriented films is not easy in Bollywood. Right from shooting to distribution, it is tough to get the appropriate budgets and provisions.
"Budget problems are not specific to me and my films. It is the same story for all female filmmakers. If you want to make films with women who are not big stars, it is a problem. Even with big stars - Meghna (Gulzar) made Raazi (with Alia Bhatt) - she had to shoot within limited budget and had to shoot for long hours," informs Alankrita.
The filmmaker who made a mark directing Lipstick Under My Burkha in 2017, adds that this is because women-centric films don't get distribution. "The budget is justified through the exhibition and distribution system. These distributors feel that these films cannot make that much money," she says.

Choked Paisa Bolta Hai
Starring Saiyami Kher, Roshan Matthew, Amruta Subhash, Rajshree Deshpande
Directed by Anurag Kashyap
Our prime minister Narendra Modi makes a guest appearance in Choked, Anurag Kashyap’s latest homage to the spirit of quirkiness where the characters are for once, not killing each other. This is Kashyap’s first film where no one one dies a brutal death with their head smashed by a hammer or blown away by a gunshot. Thank Kashyap, the God of Gore, for small mercies.
Everyone lives in Choked, even when demonetization nearly kills them all. The people who inhabit Kashyap’s universe this time are way too gentle by his standards. The most violent occurrence is a scuffle between two friends over a game of carrom.
Is the Wasseypur sharpshooter softening as he grows older? There is distinctive tenderness in tone specially when it comes to portraying the low middleclass couple Sarita and Sushant.

Anurag Kashyap, the “angry young man” of Hindi cinema, whose creative genius envisioned works like “Gangs of Wasseypur“, “Dev D” and “Ugly” has always made films that are a warcry- a rebel with a cause to detract from the joie de vivre of Bollywood. Each of his films are decked upon another, a tryst with a dark caricature of the subaltern milieu, anchored at the helm by contemporary politics and violence. In an interview, Kashyap describes his latest endeavour “Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai” as a Sai Paranjpye thriller. Descriptions and definitions apart, it is starkly liberating from the Kashyap-esque tradition of filmmaking in terms of its storytelling and critique. As is his wont to stand ground against the establishment, Kashyap barters the nuances of a refined story for a more didactically inclined narrative.

ReviewThe film begins in October 2016 in Mumbai, a month before Pm Modi announced the demonetisation of high value currency notes. Sowmya RajendranSarita is like millions of Indian women who have to do it all – work at home and work in their office, with no time for rest or relaxation. Her husband, Sushant, sits around all day doing nothing, shamefaced about Sarita having to pick up his slack but thick-skinned enough to maintain the status quo. The drain in their kitchen is a point of conflict. It gurgles, it chokes, it spills out water into the kitchen... it’s a curse, until it’s not. Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai, directed by Anurag Kashyap and written by Nihit Bhave, is now streaming on Netflix.
