Alpha, the new, still-top-secret film from Titane director Julia Ducournau will be one of the hot projects being shopped to buyers at this year’s Cannes film market.
About Elly and Paterson actress Golshifteh Farahani and French star Tahar Rahim (A Prophet, The Mauritanian) are set to star in the feature, the plot details of which are still under wraps. FilmNation and Charades are teaming up to present “Alpha,” the new film from Julia Ducournau, to buyers at Cannes.
It’s the same place where Ducournau caused a sensation with 2021’s “Titane,” her subversive and divisive body horror film, which won the Palme d’Or, the festival’s top award. Ducournau became the second female director to win the award, following Jane Campion (“The Piano”). “Anatomy of a Fall” director Justine Triet would become the third female winner in 2023. Ducournau’s other films include 2016’s “Raw,” a coming-of-age film about a young vegetarian who develops a taste for cannibalism.
“Alpha’s” cast includes Golshifteh Farahani, who appeared in “The Patience Stone” and “Paterson,” as well as César award-winning Tahar Rahim, best known for his work in “The Mauritanian,” “A Prophet” and “The Serpent.”

Ajay Devgn Plays Syed Abdul Rahim In Maidaan (Photo Credit – Youtube/Wikipedia)
Ajay Devgn‘s Maidaan has beautifully celebrated another unsung hero of the nation – Sir Syed Abdul Rahim. He was the football coach whose training earned us gold medals in the Asian Games twice – in 1951 (Delhi) and 1962 (Jakarta). It was under his mentorship that the Indian National Football team reached the semi-finals of the Summer Olympics.
In the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne, India was the first Asian country to reach the Semi-Finals in football. He was the most successful coach of the National Football Team of India.
However, Syed Abdul Rahim’s career and coaching were also put under scanner before the 1962 Asian Games when his selection for the National Team was accused of being biased and preferential.

The sports drama genre often follows a predictable and formulaic narrative structure, resulting in many films falling short in terms of original storytelling. However, ‘Maidaan,’ starring Ajay Devgn and directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, manages to stand out among these films due to its engaging storytelling and emotional depth.
The film centers on the remarkable journey of Syed Abdul Rahim, an Indian football coach whose contributions to the sport are often overlooked. Rahim’s innovative tactics and leadership transformed the Indian football team, earning them the title of the “Brazil of Asia” and notable achievements such as gold medals at the Asian Games and a semi-final appearance at the 1956 Summer Olympics.
One of the film’s strengths lies in its portrayal of Rahim’s struggle against internal politics and lack of resources. The narrative effectively highlights the challenges faced by the team, including the absence of proper gear that hindered their performance in international matches.

Maidaan
Starring Ajay Devgn, Priyamani
Directed by Amit Sharma
With Maidaan, Amit Ravinder Sharma proves Badhaai Ho was no fluke. A small film with a big heart, Badhaai Ho was a trendsetter. Maidaan is an even braver work of art, more deserving of our collective reverence. It dives into the life of a man Syed Abdul Rahim whose dedication and passion and loyalty toward football brought India two gold medals in the 1951 Asian Games and 1962 Asian Games.
It is so profoundly gratifying to see our cinema celebrating a real hero rather than scummy gangsters and politicians who have contributed nothing to our nation’s stature. Maidaan brings us vivid glimpses into the life of Syed Abdul Rahim. Ajay Devgan’s quietly intense performance enriches the supple storytelling manifold.
Hardly any other film in any Indian language in recent times has exercised such a steep reformative impulse on the audience. Amit Sharma,...
