American Idol’s top six contestants had to pick one country and one rock anthem to perform for Wednesday’s live show.
Jena Irene
Jena Irene was the first Idol-hopeful to hit the stage, taking on Heart’s “Barracuda.” Once again, the young singer brought her charisma and her unique vocals and wowed both the audience and the judges. Her performance convinced the judges that she could be the one to beat this year.
For her country song, Irene chose former Idol winner Carrie Underwood’s “So Small.” Instead of sticking to the song’s country melody, Irene reimagined it with her sometimes-haunting sound that completely blew resident country judge Keith Urban away.
Sam Woolf
Sam Woolf selected Imagine Dragon’s “It’s Time” for his rock song, which the judges agreed was a wise choice. Harry Connick Jr. believed Woolf’s performance, claiming he felt a “sense of commitment” from the young singer,...

It's time to belt up and belt out a song as Clip joint climbs into the driving seat to pick our favourite singing in the car clips
There is nothing more liberating than being in a car, hearing a song you love, cranking up the radio and singing your heart out. Something about that combination of open road and closed-off environment let's us sing without inhibition – nailing those high notes in our own mobile performance booth.
In the movies placing an actor behind the wheel mid-sing-song bumps the story into fifth gear, speeding us on the fast track to the heart of a character. What they are singing, how they sing it and who they're singing with – it's a film-maker's moment to unfold the narrative map and say "Hey! this is where we're at, and this is where we're heading next." For the audience it's also a moment of recognition.

With Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in full swing for the spring 2012 season, there have been plenty of highlights (a swell of American pride on the 10th anniversary of 9/11) and lowlights (pantsuits, pantsuits, and more pantsuits). Nicki Minaj seems as committed as ever to sky-high hair, laughing in the face of the schlub behind her on the second row, and Lindsay Lohan may just survive the oncoming apocalypse. Click through to learn some of the goings-on.

It was wonderful and horrible and probably killed some brain cells, but we loved Kirstie Alley's nutty fox trot on Monday's (April 18) "Dancing with the Stars."
The ingredients: A royal blue "I Dream of Genie" get-up, a shirtless Russian with an American Flag painted on his flank, The Guess Who's "American Woman" and a visit from fellow Scientologist -- and dance doctor (who knew?) -- John Travolta.
As per usual, Alley looked slightly tranquilized while dancing, though this week there were no overt mishaps (last week Alley lost a shoe, the week before Maks lost his balance and tumbled to the floor). The pair sought a little pre-show help from Travolta, a long-time friend of Alley's. His advice? "Wear high tops." She didn't, but the segment was fun.
Travolta's wife, Kelly Preston, was in the audience to watch the fruits of her husband's labor. And his ministrations paid off,...

Paul Giamatti and Dustin Hoffman in "Barney's Version"
Canadian author Mordecai Richler’s telling of Barney Panofsky’s crazy life was released fourteen years ago. And much like the events of Barney, a man with three wives and an accusation of murder to his name, the journey for his film adaptation has been eventful to say the least. Conceived by producer Robert Lantos and eventually captained by Richard J. Lewis, Barney’s Version started off as Lantos’ dream, and became an award-winning drama/comedy starring three names known by Oscar, Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman, and Minnie Driver. Last Sunday, Paul Giamatti won a Golden Globe for his performance in the film.
To help make sense of it all, I sat down with director Richard J. Lewis to discuss all of the elements that went into telling Barney’s Version after so many years.
Barney’s Version opens in Chicago on January 21st.

Both the Sundance and the Slamdance Film Festivals begin in Park City, Utah this week. While I previously posted up the full Slamdance lineup and some underground highlights at Sundance, I thought I’d round them up again for those attending the festivals who might be reading this and looking for the quirkier, out-of-the-hype screenings.
Sundance:
The first movie you don’t want to miss at is After You Left, directed by Jef Taylor, which was recently reviewed on Bad Lit. This easygoing, but emotionally complicated tale about a semi-immature dude in his mid-thirties dealing with a serious broken heart has a minimalist charm to it that makes it instantly likable. It’s the kind of film that at first it may not seem like much is going on, but actually has a lot to say. Lead actor Michael Tisdale is really good in it, too. Exact screening info is on this page.

Out of 6,467 short film submissions — a record for the fest — the Sundance Film Festival has selected to screen 81 of them during its 2011 edition, which will run on Jan. 20-30. Out of those 81 short films, a handful have ties to the underground film world.
First, I want to offer special Bad Lit congratulations to filmmaker Jef Taylor, whose film After You Left — written by Taylor and Michael Tisdale — was one of those short films chosen.
Earlier this year, I reviewed Taylor’s phenomenal, award-winning short film Coverage, so I was thrilled to hear another one of his more recent films got into Sundance. (I also hope to have a review of After You Left up around the time of the fest.)

The Sundance Film Festival 2011 has a great line-up of movies this year, and I'm really excited about what we are going to get to see this year. The 2011 Sundance Film Festival is shaping up quite nicely. The films in competition [1], and out of competition [2], have already been announced and each has some incredibly exciting entries. Monday brought the announcement of the 81 short films, chosen out of 6,467 entries, that will play in Park City, Utah this January. And while the majority of them are by currently unknown filmmakers, there are a few that jump out featuring names like Elijah Wood, Danny McBride, Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly and Jack Black. Actually, those guys are all in the same short. Other notables include Neil Labute, Tim & Eric and Isabella Rossellini. After the jump, we'll highlight those films and show you the full list. Scanning the list, here are the films that stick out as particularly exciting. After announcing their feature film line-up (here and here), the Sundance Film Institute just sent us over their short film selections. Most initially appealing is Fight For Your Right Revisited, directed by Beastie Boy‘s Adam Yauch. The short features Elijah Wood, Danny McBride, Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, and Jack Black. I’ll definitely be checking it out.
Neil Labute is also directing a short starring Julia Stiles, and Jonathan Caouette‘s short starring Chloë Sevigny will show, from the trailer we previously featured. There is also a short co-written by Cloverfield and Unstoppable‘s T.J. Miller. Check them all out below and look for our coverage in January.

Well, we’ve see the list of feature-length films that are in the 2011 lineup of the Sundance Film Festival. Just moments ago, the festival revealed the full list of short films that will accompany those features – 44 in total, from a record 3,453 submissions! Wow! Glad I’m not on that judging committee.
But of note in the below list are 2 filmmakers who are followers of this blog, both I’ve communicated with in the past – one actually was mentioned on Black Filmmakers To Watch thread, so we may as well add the other.
I’m referring to Moon Molson and Tahir Jetter.
Moon’s short film is titled Crazy Beats Strong Every Time. Some may recall that, in September, I posted an entry for Moon, to help raise money to complete the short film. He was trying to raise $8,000, and actually ended up raising $10,250! So, congrats to Moon! The synopsis for...

When "The Kids in the Hall" came to Summer Press Tour, between Dave Foley kicking chairs, Scott Thompson crumbling potato chip bags while shouting, "The fires are getting closer," and Kevin McDonald regaling us with songs by The Guess Who, we managed to get in a few questions on "Death Comes to Town," the new eight-part mini-series that reunites all five "Kids" members.
"We had an impulse to write new material," says head writer and executive producer Bruce McCulloch. "We'd always talked about doing something and we could never decide what it was. Then I had this idea and it was Death gets off a Greyhound bus and it's a murder mystery."
Each "Kids" member plays 4-6 characters, much like the original sketch series. But unfortunately, not all of them get to be in drag.

Did most of the top 12 boys choke, or are our expectations just too high?
After suffering through disappointing performances from the top 12 girls on American Idol, we finally got a chance to watch the guys take the stage last night, and the results were… slightly less disappointing. Though there were a few standout performances (big ups to Casey James and Joe Muñoz) we couldn’t help but long for the boys of season eight: Where were the Adam Lamberts? The Kris Allens? We’d even settle for another Matt Giraud.
Todrick Hall, 24, set the tone for the evening by butchering Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” with an awkward R&B rendition that just didn’t work. Even 20-year-old Tyler Grady (who we love) put on a lackluster performance of The Guess Who’s “American Woman.” The judges agreed his ’70s rocker vibe is too cliché and it feels forced.

Wednesday night's (February 24) "American Idol" was bad. Really bad. Like, makes-you-question-the-meaning-of-life-bad. The debut of season nine's Top 12 boys (no men here) did the impossible: It out-sucked the girls' tepid outing from Tuesday. By a lot. Let's just get to the carnage.
Todrick Hall
Song: "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson
Verdict: The Wizard of Odd
Todrick opened the show on an offbeat note by putting Kelly Clarkson's signature anthem in a blender with fuzzed out synths, jangly African guitars, Morris Day R&B, atonal background singers, gospel vocal inflections and a dollop of a spoken word. It was as close to a Dirty Projectors song as we'll ever get on "American Idol." It may have left the judges scratching their heads (Randy used the word "obliterated"), but Pitchfork would give it an 9.2. Personally, I dug it. He may have been trying too hard, but I thought his vocals...

The second night of "American Idol" showcased the talents of the 12 guys who are hoping to win the "Idol" title -- and then America voted. On Thursday night, four will be sent home: two women and two men, taking us to next week and the Top 20. Todrick Hall kicked off the night with a unique version of Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone." Ellen DeGeneres began the critiques, saying, "That is what you are looking for after you sing a song. [The audience reaction.] You are dancer, so you already have a stage presence. The chorus was rough. The singing wasn't the greatest, but a great performance." Randy Jackson said, "I think you are mad talented, but I didn't even know what song it was. You never want to take a song and completely obliterate it. I still want to see you sing." Kara DioGuardi added, "I think you are a strong...
