“Modern Family” has landed a cable run at Warner Bros. Discovery’s TBS network starting Sept. 25.
The ABC sitcom, which ran for 11 total seasons from 2009 to 2020, will air on TBS for a three-hour block on weekdays — specifically from 12:30-3:30 p.m. on weekdays. The licensing by the cable outlet marks an attempt to bolster its comedy options.
Previously, “Friends” and “Young Sheldon” have occupied the hours that “Modern Family” will run. Both shows will remain on the network. Monday saw longer daily marathons of “The Big Bang Theory” on TBS.
“Our audience continually seeks out popular comedies like ‘Friends,’ ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and ‘Modern Family,’ so now that we have all three of these iconic series on TBS, we can build an even bigger, more engaged audience,” said Julie Taylor, chief of Content Strategy & Insights, US Networks Group, Warner Bros. Updated with launch taking effect. Modern Family, which wrapped its highly decorated, 11-season network run last year, is embarking on a significant new streaming chapter via a shared deal with Peacock and Hulu.
Starting today, all 250 episodes of the Emmy-laden sitcom are available on both services after years of only having a limited batch of episodes on Hulu.
Indications from the deal announcement on January 26 are that the go-go streaming market remains in full effect. Sources familiar with the terms said the multi-year acquisition price stretched well into nine figures, consistent with healthy rates for recent half-hours such as Friends, The Office and Seinfeld. Prices have been driven steadily higher by the entry of several new billion-dollar players into the streaming fray in the past year.

ABC is not going to let its comedy hit Modern Family go quietly as the long-running series enters its 11th and final season.
ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke admitted to Deadline on Monday that the current storyline of Hayley Dunphy, played by Sarah Hyland, and her newborn baby with her on-again-off-again boyfriend Dylan, played by Reid Ewing, seems tailor-made for a spinoff.
Modern Family, which also stars Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould and Rico Rodriguez, just launched production on the final season and co-creator/exec producer Steve Levitan said they “plan on finishing strong.”
Burke admitted that Levitan doesn’t yet want to discuss spinoffs. “I get smacked down every time I bring it up to Steve Levitan, so I’m going to stay quiet for a little while,” she said. “They’ve just started production on the final season...

Jessie Pinnick (Princess Cyd) and former Life Sentence star Elliot Knight are set as series regulars opposite Matt Walsh, Joanna Garcia Swisher, Vanessa Williams and Kether Donohue in Happy Accident, ABC’s single-camera family comedy pilot from Modern Family writers Abraham Higginbotham and Jon Pollack, 20th Century Fox TV and ABC Studios.
Written and executive produced by Higginbotham and Pollack, Happy Accident revolves around two Pittsburgh families — a father, Bud (Walsh), with three adult daughters (Swisher as Eleanor), and a hotel lounge singer (Williams as Sherri) with her med student son (Knight)— who are forced together after a decades-old secret is revealed.
Pinnick will play Samantha “Sammy” Bennett, the baby of the family and a tomboy. Knight is Kenan, Sherri’s son, who has a need for control and order.
Pinnick is known for playing the titular role in feature Princess Cyd. She’s repped by Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Innovative Artists.

It’s official — ABC’s flagship comedy series Modern Family will wrap its run after one more season. The Emmy-winning family comedy has been picked up for an eleventh and final season, the network announced at TCA. I hear it will consist of at least 18 episodes and could expand to 22 episodes.
Modern Family’s renewal was all but assured when the original adult cast, stars Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet and Sofia Vergara, in December agreed on new deals with producing studio 20th Century Fox TV to return. Since then, the studio also has signed co-creators/executive producers Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd for another season, and also has made new deals with the original kid actors — now all young adults — Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould and Rico Rodriguez. I hear some of those cast negotiations came down to the wire, with pacts finally closing overnight.

ABC has set an end date for “Modern Family,” renewing the sitcom for an 11th and final season.
The announcement was made by ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke on Tuesday at the Television Critics Association press tour.
“Chris and Steve have created one of the most seminal and iconic comedies in television history,” Burke said. “In its final season, there will be more milestone events that anyone who has been a fan of the series won’t want to miss.”

During its run, “Modern Family” was among the most-nominated comedy series, winning a total of 22 Emmys, including five straight years for Outstanding Comedy Series (2010-2014). “Even after 10 years together, we realized there are still some things our writers don’t yet know about each other’s sex lives,” co-creator and executive producer Steve Levitan said.

Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.
You know who I'm blaming for this? Paramount! The studio did not send screeners to Academy voters. Heck, they did not sent one to us, the Broadcast Film Critics Association. But after begging, they did send a link so I could watch "Selma" in time for our Critics' Choice Movie Award nominations.
"Selma" is a "late to the party" entry that is gaining momentum dashed by the PGA! If you remember, Clint Eastwood...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) added to the industry mix Monday morning with a list of 10 nominees to keep the awards season grist mill churning. "Gone Girl" popped up again, and it shouldn't be a surprise. It's one of the year's biggest hits. And speaking of hits, I had a hunch "Nightcrawler" would find a place after becoming such a well-liked, profitable success. There it sits. The question for both of these films is whether this on-going industry/guild love ends up translating to Oscar recognition. After the "Dragon Tattoo" rush a few years ago, I'm pretty much wait-and-see on stuff like this. Absent from the list was anything out of the Marvel Studios comic book factory, notable as both "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were both on the top tier of box office earners in 2014. The former currently maintains the throne, though it...

Updated With Full List Of Scripts, Writers, And Reps: Catherine The Great, about the rise and life of the famous (sometimes notorious) 18th-Century Russian monarch, was the top vote-getter among 70 scripts chosen for the 2014 Black List of the year’s best un-produced scripts. The screenplay, by Los Angeles writer and producer Kristina Lauren Anderson, was announced as part of an hour-plus process on Twitter and YouTube this morning.
Each of the 70 screenplays on this 10th annual list was chosen by a group of 250 development executives, agents and other Hollywood insiders as among the year’s best un-produced scripts in a process overseen by Franklin Leonard of http://www.blcklst.com. Anderson’s screenplay received 51 votes.
Other notables in the list include writer/actor/director Kenneth Lonergan with Manchester-By-The-Sea, which is being produced by Matt Damon and Chris Moore. Randall Green had two scripts make the list, The Swimsuit Issue and Cartoon Girl.

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

And we have made it – well, almost – to the climactic gay wedding promised in the first episode of season five, which was itself spawned from the decision to reinstate same-sex marriage in California. The wedding is a tried and true staple of beloved, long-running sitcoms, and splitting the big event into a two-episode finale (the second half will air next Wednesday, May 21) was a smart move.
The two-part finale of Modern Family should give the writers enough time to chart where the characters are at in this pivotal moment, which could be a midpoint of this blossoming series. However, there were probably too many cooks in the kitchen for part one, with episode scribes Abraham Higginbotham, Ben Karlin and Jeffrey Richman carving up the ensemble into six separate groups for 21 minutes, cluttering the very special episode.

“Three Dinners” is the finest episode of Modern Family this season and one of the best half-hours in the show’s run. Its structure is simple, its humour more refined and less shrill than typical for the sitcom, and the mix of drama with levity balances out just right. Usually when three writers get credit for a television episode, the story could falter due to having too many cooks in the kitchen. Thankfully, this meal – just embrace the food metaphor for this dinner-themed half-hour – hits the sweet spot as it’s a delightful mix of sharp humour and insightful character study.
Abraham Higginbotham, Steven Levitan & Jeffrey Richman wrote the episode (with Levitan also serving as director). They wisely situate almost the entire show within three dinner spaces. Dinner is a time for a family to retreat from their hectic daily lives and catch up with each other, but the most...
