A small contingent of journalists gathered near the Canadian border earlier this morning to watch as Dixville Notch, Nh, continued its tradition of casting the first ballots on an election day.
Nikki Haley cleaned Donald Trump’s clock in this hamlet — 6 votes to none.
As the day goes on, network correspondents are fanning out across the state at precincts to talk to actual voters, after months in which the first-in-the-nation primary was judged and assessed by polls. Commentary and analysis is focusing on whether
Haley and her top surrogate, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, blitzed the airwaves on Monday, while Trump held a final rally in Laconia, Nh, where he predicted that Haley would be out of the race after tonight. He was interrupted by climate protesters, who have been a frequent presence at events in recent days.

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

David Muir and Linsey Davis will moderate the network’s pre-New Hampshire primary Republican debate on Jan. 18.

ABC News said that This Week co-anchors Martha Raddatz and Jonathan Karl will also be involved in coverage of the event, along with Wmur political director Adam Sexton.
The debate will start at 9 p.m. Et and will take place at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, Nh. The debate is being held in coordination with the New Hampshire Republican State Committee. Former President Donald Trump‘s daughter Ivanka caused a stir among her Instagram followers when she posted pictures of herself at a party with Kim Kardashian on Wednesday.
The two women attended the grand opening party of Fontainebleau Las Vegas, a new casino in Las Vegas, along with a star-studded guest list that included Kendall Jenner, Tom Brady, Lenny Kravitz, Cher, Sylvester Stallone, Alice Cooper, Dita Von Teese, Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley.
The event also featured a special performance by Justin Timberlake, with his wife Jessica Biel in attendance.
Ivanka shared images of her night out in Las Vegas on Instagram, which showcased her on the venue’s grounds, at Timberlake’s performance, and around the casino.
The photos that included Kardashian received negative comments from many of Ivanka’s followers.
“Sad to see someone like her with you. She hates your father,” one fan wrote.

Former President Donald Trump seriously believed a fringe conspiracy that suggested the possibility of his reinstatement as president, even after his defeat in the 2020 election and his departure from the White House.
ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl‘s new book, Tired of Winning: Donald Trump and the End of the Grand Ole Party, provides insight into the origins of Trump’s belief in this theory, which was supported by some of his most loyal allies.
My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell was among those who actively promoted the false belief that Trump could return to the White House on August 13, 2021, despite the end of Trump’s first term on Inauguration Day, several months prior.
This groundless theory falsely asserted that President Joe Biden was not the legitimate president and that the military was in control until Trump was reinstated, a scenario that never materialized.

Former President Donald Trump fired shots at Kim Kardashian for the remarks she made in journalist Jonathan Karl‘s new book, shortly after Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, attended a party hosted by the celebrity.
Trump posted to TruthSocial, “Failed ABC Fake News reporter Jonathan Karl just wrote another bad book. He works sooo hard, but has sooo little talent…he has the World’s most overrated celebrity, Kim Kardashian, supposedly telling me that she ‘would leverage her celebrity to get football stars to come to the White House,’ if I would commute the sentences of various prisoners. This story is Fake News in that she would be the last person I asked to get football players.”
He added, “I did help with prisoner commutation, but only if deserving, and much more so for Kanye West than for Kim, who probably voted for Crooked Joe Biden, and look at the mess our Country is in now.

In the aftermath of the 2020 election, Donald Trump had a testy exchange with Kim Kardashian, the celebrity criminal justice advocate who had engaged with his White House multiple times before.
According to an excerpt of Jonathan Karl’s new book Tired Of Winning, Kardashian was lobbying the White House for more sentence commutations in the weeks before Trump’s presidency ended. But, according to an excerpt of the book featured in Axios today, Trump demanded “a straight up quid pro quo,” asking her to get football stars to visit him at the White House. But she was unable to do that because Trump “had become too toxic.”
After Trump was out of office, Kardashian reached out to the former president’s office for his endorsement of her efforts to secure clemency for those serving time. Trump called her directly, Karl wrote, and claimed that she had voted for Joe Biden.

The winners of this year’s recipients of the Walter Cronkite Awards had a common theme: Combating misinformation.
So when award sponsor USC Annenberg’s Norman Lear Center held a National Press Club luncheon for the honorees last week, there was a bit of reminder of the stakes: During the ceremony news unfolded of the unsealing of former President Donald Trump’s federal indictment.
Many of the winners reported on Trump and his false claims of a stolen 2020 election, something that he has repeated during his current election campaign. He’s also called the indictment itself the “boxes hoax.”
Martin Kaplan, director of The Norman Lear Center, said, “Disinformation is an apt focus in particular for the Cronkite award, not only because it feels like disinformation is everywhere all at once, but because the namesake of this award is Walter Cronkite” who was known as “the most trusted man in America.

Donald Trump did draw the media spotlight for his presidential announcement speech on Tuesday, but the networks varied in how they approached the event, carrying parts of it and cutting away at others.
The coverage perhaps offers a glimpse of how Trump will be covered as he embarks on his third presidential bid — certainly a top story, but not the only one.
Trump promoted the speech as “one of the most important ones in the history of our country,” but the networks alternated their focus on other stories throughout the day. That included the missile hit on Poland that, just minutes before Trump took the stage, put the focus on his nemesis, President Joe Biden.
CNN carried the speech from Mar-a-Lago for more than 20 minutes before cutting away when Trump made the official announcement. Anderson Cooper then went to a fact check with Daniel Dale, a fixture during the 2020 election cycle.

Trump promoted the speech as “one of the most important ones in the history of our country,” but the networks alternated their focus on other stories throughout the day. That included the missile hit on Poland that, just minutes before Trump took the stage, put the focus on his nemesis, President Joe Biden.

ABC News’ This Week With George Stephanopoulos topped the key adults 25-54 demographic among the Sunday news programs the 2021-22 broadcast television season, while CBS News’ Face the Nation again was the most watched in total viewers.
All of the network Sunday shows shed viewers from the 2020-21 season, a period that included the momentous presidential election and its aftermath. Since then, some of the programs have gone through some changes, while there has been some speculation of the long-term future of the Sunday mainstays and their Beltway focus.
This Week, which features Stephanopoulos, Jonathan Karl and Martha Raddatz as hosts, averaged 572,000 viewers in the demo, a decline of 11 from the previous season. But that was still enough to top that category, overtaking NBC News’ Meet the Press. The Chuck Todd-hosted show averaged 525,000 viewers in the demo, off by 26 versus the previous season. Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova told a gathering of Washington politicos and media types that the Russian invasion has been a “game changer” in which “the freedom of press and freedom of expression and the freedom of speech suddenly became an existential need.”
She was speaking at a fundraiser on Thursday for Reporters Without Borders, which is raising money for journalists, including Ukrainian journalists and international freelancers, who need such things as security equipment and health assistance as they cover the war in Ukraine.
Markarova said of the journalists covering the war, “Really you are as brave and as heroic as all the Ukrainians as all the Ukrainians who are fighting. It takes a lot of courage and it takes a lot of values and principles to leave your comfortable life here. There are a lot of stories to choose from. The January 6th Committee has surprised many in Washington, D.C., by pulling off the unexpected — not just with new revelations but in the way that it has methodically laid out a narrative of Donald Trump’s effort to overturn the election results.
The committee has presented its case as if each hearing was episodic — in brisk, well-produced two-hour chunks that make heavy use of video, audio and graphics.
We’ve seen video of former Attorney General William Barr calling Trump’s claims of election fraud “bullsh*t.” There was the photo of then-Vice President Mike Pence, in a secure location at the Capitol, watching video of Trump praising the mob. We heard a “surprise” witness in Cassidy Hutchinson, the aide to chief of staff Mark Meadows, as she described in detail what she saw and heard on January 6th, most vivid being her story of Trump trying to grab...

According to Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), former Mark Meadows aide Cassidy Hutchinson’s devastating testimony to the Jan. 6 committee this week — where she revealed the inner workings of the Trump White House in the lead up to and during the Capitol attack — has inspired other witnesses to come forward.
Host Dana Bash interviewed Kinzinger on CNN’s State of the Union and asked: “Since Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony, have new witnesses come forward to want to speak up?”

In one of the first looks at footage from a documentary filmmaker embedded with the Trump family during the 2020 election cycle, the former president calls the rioters who stormed the Capitol last Jan. 6 “smart” people who were acting in justified anger over a stolen election.
“It was a sad day but it was a day where there was great anger in our country,” Trump said. “People went to Washington primarily because they were angry with an election they think was rigged. … They were angry from the standpoint of what happened in the election.

He also reportedly enjoyed that some of them were chanting for Vice President Mike Pence to be hung for failing to illegally stop the certification of the 2020 election results. ABC News’ chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl has tested positive for Covid, just days after attending the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, a source confirmed.
With photographers focused on their every move, Karl sat next to Kim Kardashian at the event, as she and Pete Davidson were guests of the network. Karl also shook hands with President Joe Biden when he came up to the dais to receive a Whca award for excellence in presidential coverage under deadline pressure.
Karl tested negative on Saturday before the dinner, as all attendees were required to do, along with showing a proof of vaccination. But he tested positive on Monday night, according to a source familiar with the circumstances. “Jon is currently isolating and participating in contract tracing,” the source said.
At the dinner, some 2,600 people packed into the Washington Hilton ballroom, but many also mingled at numerous cocktail parties and receptions before and after the event.

Fresh off a Texas rally appearance during which he wailed that the “2020 election was rigged,” former President Trump said explicitly on Sunday that he wanted former Vice President Mike Pence to “overturn” President Biden’s win.
“Unfortunately, he didn’t exercise that power, he could have overturned the Election!” Trump concluded a statement falsely alleging that “Democrats and Rino Republicans” knew Pence had the right to stop the election certification on Jan. 6 and are now “desperately trying to pass legislation that will not allow the Vice President to change the results of the election.

Trump campaign lawyer Jenna Ellis wrote a memo dated the day before the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol arguing that then-Vice President Mike Pence should refuse to count presidential electors from states won by Joe Biden.
In the Jan. 5 memo, obtained by Politico, Ellis went so far as to claim Pence had the authority to prevent a Biden presidency because certain parts of the Electoral Count Act were likely unconstitutional. Accordingly, Ellis wrote that the vice president “should … simply stop the count” when the time came for Arizona’s electors to be accepted.
