The national tour of ‘Clue: A New Comedy’ remixes the classic murder mystery with farcical physical comedy and impassioned old-fashioned sensibilities.
“It’s all part of the game.”
There’s a strong relationship between mischievous murder mysteries and the horror genre. Murder mysteries inherently hinge upon death – it’s baked into the name – so it’s not surprising that horror has embraced this secretive subgenre and really emphasized the murder in murder mysteries. Murder mysteries have been popular in pop culture for nearly a century. However, there’s been a recent renaissance on this front with playful films like Knives Out, A Haunting in Venice, Bodies Bodies Bodies, the Scream franchise, and the prominence of the true-crime genre and armchair detectives. That being said, an underrated and evergreen source of murder mystery hijinks that’s entertained audiences for 75 years is Hasbro and Parker Brothers’ Clue.

If Percy Jackson’s bright and lively Broadway adventure tosses a bit of deja vu your way, I’d guess the creeping sense of vague recall has little to do with that gang of Greek gods down the block belting out tunes from Hadestown, and even less to do with Percy’s plodding 2010 film. I’d smell a Squip.
Sharing some of its creative team with Broadway’s recent (and brighter and livelier) Be More Chill, the newly arrived The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, can seem like a warm-up for that musical. Move aside winter white, sunny yellow is the new hue to rock for a night out on the town. There are few companies in the world as protective of their intellectual property as Disney, and anyone who repurposes their material without consent is bound to get a swift call from their lawyers. And heck, even material that Disney themselves produced in the past that may have be seen as racially, culturally and socially distasteful today remains locked away in a vault (the most famous example being "Song Of The South," a massive hit at the time for the studio that still remains without a home video edition). So it's hardly any surprise that this unofficial anti-war short raised some eyebrows. "Mickey Mouse In Vietnam" is a 1-minute, silent, black-and-white short put together by Lee Savage and Milton Glaser (aka the designer who came up with the iconic I ♥ NY logo) that features the popular cartoon character enlisting in the army, going overseas and winding up with a bullet in his head.
