We’re currently living in a golden age of panic-inducing eco-documentaries gushing facts and statistics at us about how humans are killing the planet. These didactic films are vital for grounding us in the sobering truths of climate change and spurring activism across generations. But it’s easy to feel wrung out from the constant finger-wagging, too. Unquestionably, it’s more challenging for filmmakers to transmit environmentalist messages via tone, mood or imagery alone — but for viewers, the rewards can be spectacular.
The documentaries in this list showcase the grand scale of Earth, but they’re also able to demonstrate the refinement of our microcosmic communities. Some focus on explorers who either conflict or harmonize with their subjects; others are dialogue-free meditations on life itself. We’re witnesses to tragedy and celebration, spirituality and terror.

Neon has acquired the North American rights to Academy Award-nominated and BAFTA-winning director, Raoul Peck’s (I Am Not Your Negro) documentary Orwell, the definitive feature-length documentary on visionary author George Orwell, with the exclusive cooperation of the Orwell Estate.
Producers include Alex Gibney for Jigsaw Productions, Raoul Peck for Velvet Films, and Nick Shumaker for Anonymous Content. Stacey Offman and Richard Perello will executive produce for Jigsaw. Zhang Xin, Joey Marra, and William Horberg will executive produce for Closer Media, alongside Jessica Grimshaw, Dawn Olmstead, and David Levine of Anonymous, and Jeff Skoll and Courtney Sexton of Participant. Johnny Fewings of Universal Pictures Content Group will serve as executive producer on the film, which is currently in production.

Neon, Double Agent and Film4 are partnering to co-finance and exec produce 2073, a new documentary from Academy Award and BAFTA-winning director Asif Kapadia (Amy).
2073 is billed as a genre-bending thriller set in a dystopian future, which will tackle some of the biggest challenges imperiling our future. The project is inspired by Chris Marker’s iconic 1962 featurette La Jetée — about a time traveler who risks his life to change the course of history and save the future of humanity — which previously served as the basis for Terry Gilliam’s sci-fi pic 12 Monkeys, with Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt.

One of the biggest streaming events of fall 2021 is undoubtedly the new Disney+ docuseries “The Beatles: Get Back,” directed by Peter Jackson. A Fab Four superfan, the “Lord of the Rings” director compiled the three-part series, airing on the streamer November 25, 26, and 27, from 57 hours of never before seen footage shot by the documentarian Michael Lindsay-Hogg during the sessions for their aborted album “Get Back.” Check out the first trailer for the series released by Disney+ below.

Neon, which distributed 2019’s Todd Douglas Miller-directed Emmy- and Peabody-winning documentary Apollo 11, said Thursday it will release Miller’s new short film Apollo 11: Quarantine in Imax theaters beginning January 29. The distributor said it will mount an Oscar campaign for the short, which will be co-presented by Neon and CNN Films and runs just more than 23 minutes.
Apollo 11: Quarantine will feature never-before-seen 70mm footage sourced from the National Archives and NASA that centers on the three-week medical quarantine the astronauts had to undergo after returning from the moon in the summer of 1969 — a fitting topic these days with the coronavirus pandemic and quarantines being the norm.

A total of 52 films are nominated across 14 categories. Of those, 21 were broadcast on BBC channel, while Netflix has nine nominations and Channel 4 has five. ITV and Al Jazeera have two apiece whilst nominations newcomer YouTube Originals joins Channel 5, National Geographic and Discovery with one each.

The Primetime Emmys take place on September 20 and air live coast-to-coast on ABC. But the majority of awards are handed out at the five Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies that take place in the week leading up to TV’s biggest night. The Creative Arts trophies will be awarded at five events on: September 14 (reality and nonfiction; Sept. 15 (variety); Sept. 16; Sept. 17 and Sept. 19 (mix). The first four of these will stream live on Emmys.com while the last will air on Fxx.
Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has forced TV productions, film shoots and entertainment events to shut down all year to slow the spread of the easily transmitted disease, all of this year’s Emmy ceremonies will be held virtually. If you were watching Monday’s live stream of the 2020 Creative Arts Emmys (and we were — watch our reactions here), then you definitely heard the name “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness” a lot. But not when it came to the winners. Indeed, Netflix’s behemoth docu-series lost five Emmys at the virtual ceremony: directing, music composition, picture editing, sound editing and sound mixing. U.S.-based distributor Neon, which handled best picture winner “Parasite,” has closed on a revolving credit facility with Mufg Union Bank.
The three-year-old company did not disclose the dollar amount of the facility. Neon said it will use the capital to continue building upon its core film business, as well as to expand its production slate.

It’s a huge Sunday in the entertainment world. Shortly, the Super Bowl will start, pitting the Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers. Moments ago, the Producers Guild of America finished up their annual awards show, highlighted by the Darryl F. Zanuck Award, their version of Best Picture. The PGA top prize is a reliable indicator of future Oscar success, since eight of the last ten winners here have gone on to take the Academy Award as well. Are we in line to see that happen again? Considering that the Producers Guild opted to reward Sam Mendes’ 1917, and the fact that that film is currently surging, we very well might be seeing just that. A couple of small surprises went down last night at the 70th Annual Ace Eddie Awards. The editing Guild is a noteworthy one because of how Best Film Editing ties into Best Pictures at the Academy Awards, so plenty of eyes were on this one last night. Bong Joon Ho’s acclaimed South Korean class-divide thriller “Parasite” and Taika Waititi’s Nazi satire “Jojo Rabbit,” both Editing and Best Picture Oscar nominees, were the surprise feature winners for drama and comedy at the 70th Ace Eddie Awards Friday at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. “Toy Story 4” and “Apollo 11,” meanwhile, took the awards for animation and feature documentary.
However, since Ace has long been an Academy Awards bellwether for editing, “Parasite” (edited by Jinmo Yang) now becomes the Oscar favorite, besting the frontrunner, Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” (edited by three-time Oscar winner Thelma Schoonmaker). And it could even be a harbinger for “Parasite” to make Academy history as the first international feature film to win the coveted Best Picture Oscar.

Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” has been Neon’s crown jewel this Oscar season, but a second Neon release has emerged as a game-changer at the 2020 Academy Awards. That would be “Honeyland,” Tamara Kotevska and Ljubo Stefanov’s acclaimed documentary about one of the last nomadic beekeepers in Macedonia. “Honeyland” has written itself into the Oscar history books as the first non-fiction feature to land nominations for Best Documentary and Best International Feature Film (formerly Best Foreign Language Film) in the same year. Similar to last year, the 92nd Academy Awards will be going hostless on February 9, but this morning’s Oscar nominations certainly had their fair share of unexpected disclosure for Hollywood’s biggest night.
Revealed by Issa Rae and John Cho in the pre-dawn hours out here on the West Coast, the contenders in all 24 categories for the Golden Man will not include Jennifer Lopez, The Farewell‘s Awkwafina nor any women in the Best Director category next month. “We’re doing great, we’re killing it, nominate us,” quipped Insecure star Rae as the duo seamlessly listed off the 2020 contenders.

“Joker” had 11 noms, and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman” scored 10 noms apiece. Off the back of its Globes success, “1917” landed nine.
BAFTA was quickly criticized on social channels for an overwhelmingly white set of nominees. Only white actors were nominated in the supporting and main categories. “Film is an incredible medium to tell the stories of our society and our world, but we need people of all backgrounds to be working in the industry to enable us to do that,” BAFTA chief Amanda Berry told the BBC. “If you look at the number of female noms this year it’s well over a third, well up from what it was, say, two years ago, but it’s still not good enough.

The Todd Phillips-directed $1B+ worldwide grosser that just scooped a Best Actor Golden Globe for Joaquin Phoenix is followed by Martin Scorsese’s Netflix pic The Irishman and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood from Sony.
