Liev Schreiber urged a crowd of D.C. lawmakers, ambassadors and media figures for continued support for Ukrainians as the one-year anniversary nears of Russia’s attempted invasion.
The occasion was UnSanctioned, an event at the French ambassador’s residence that brought together those who have been sanctioned by Vladimir Putin’s regime to support the humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.
The list, as Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova noted, is long. The sanctioned guests at the Friday evening event included Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, State Department Spokesman Ned Price, Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-pa), Rep. Rick Larsen (D-wa), Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Co), Rep. Rick Larsen (D-wa), Rep. Susan Wild (D-pa), Susan Glasser, Bianna Golodryga and Craig Kennedy.

Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova told a gathering of Washington politicos and media types that the Russian invasion has been a “game changer” in which “the freedom of press and freedom of expression and the freedom of speech suddenly became an existential need.”
She was speaking at a fundraiser on Thursday for Reporters Without Borders, which is raising money for journalists, including Ukrainian journalists and international freelancers, who need such things as security equipment and health assistance as they cover the war in Ukraine.
Markarova said of the journalists covering the war, “Really you are as brave and as heroic as all the Ukrainians as all the Ukrainians who are fighting. It takes a lot of courage and it takes a lot of values and principles to leave your comfortable life here. There are a lot of stories to choose from. But we’re very grateful to everyone who chooses this story,...

Update, with video: NBC’s Today team gave a toast Pete Williams on Friday as the veteran Supreme Court and Justice Department correspondent retires at the end of this month.
“When Pete speaks, it is fully vetted, you know that it is accurate, you know that it is fair,” said Today co-host Savannah Guthrie.
The Today team of Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, Sheinelle Jones and Tom Llamas held up glasses of champagne to toast Williams, who held up his own glass from NBC News’ Washington, D.C. bureau.
Williams has not announced what he will do next, but said that he has “plenty of new projects to take on.” Williams has been with the network for almost 30 years.
Kelly O’Donnell will add to her duties as senior White House correspondent and serve as interim Supreme Court correspondent until a permanent successor is chosen. The network also announced a series of changes...

In an "epic" case of life imitating art, the cast of ABC's Scandal went on a tour of the actual White House on Friday. Stars Tony Goldwyn and Kerry Washington, who play the fictional U.S. president and his sometimes lover, respectively, were joined by costars Guillermo Diaz, Katie Lowes, Jeff Perry, Bellamy Young and others - and Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes - at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. "This is what's known as an epic picture," Goldwyn captioned a Friday Instagram photo of him, Rhimes and Young in front of the White House. This is what's known as an epic picture. @shondarhimes...

Fox News Channel White House Correspondents and president of the White House Correspondents Association, Ed Henry, took a jab at former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw who for two years has been openly critical of the White House Correspondents Dinner's celebrity culture. During a brunch at former MSNBC executive Tammy Haddad’s home in Georgetown, Henry noted Brokaw’s criticism but reminded the assembled guests of the charitable work the Whca accomplishes as a result of the Correspondents Dinner.

There was no better news yesterday than seeing the first photos of Cory Monteith since he checked himself into rehab. McHale said he's proud of Monteith for taking a break from work to seek treatment. "It was the right thing to do," he said. And let's not forget the support Monteith has received from girlfriend Lea Michele. "He's got a good woman behind him," McHale said. E! At the Washington, DC premiere of Netflix's "House of Cards" series, writer and executive producer Beau Willimon detailed how the nation's capital has provided a backdrop for his work.
Tammy Haddad, attending the premiere for The Huffington Post, spoke with Willimon, who also co-wrote and produced 2011's "The Ides of March," and the play it was based on, "Farragut North." Both the Oscar-nominated film and Willimon's new series focus on the behind-the-scenes machinations of the country's political elite.
"The political world is a dark place," he said. "If you want to portray it accurately, authentically, you've got to turn out the lights from time to time."
He continued: "I certainly keep my eye on Washington all the time because often life is stranger than fiction."
The Huffington Post also spoke with series star Kate Mara, who plays up-and-coming reporter Zoe Barnes.

Lindsay Lohan may have had some issues getting to Washington, D.C., for the White House Correspondents' Dinner, but she did much better on Saturday. Not only, as we know, was she at the big Hollywood politico pow-wow, but… She was also one of the many celebs to attend Tammy Haddad's exclusive Garden Brunch earlier in the day. Lohan was on her best behavior hanging with boldfaced names like Rosario Dawson. And if there was any hard feelings for the problems she reportedly created while recently filming her guest stint on Glee, it certainly didn't appear to bother Matthew Morrison when he said hello to Lohan. LiLo looked Capitol Hill chic in a cream dress with a matching jacket and...

Every pundit that has tried to make a point, throw a punch, or declare victory should pause today to salute Christopher Hitchens.
He burst on the U.S. media scene first on William F. Buckley Jr.'s television series Firing Line, then on CNN's Larry King Live and Crossfire in the early Reagan Presidency. He (along with now presidential candidate Newt Gingrich) knew immediately that cable television was the new media play for serious public policy combat. The "disruptors," as our web friends say now. Hitchens didn't talk to the empty chairs each night on C-span as Gingrich did to make his points and show the American people that he was still at work, he just swung for the rafters with every comment on the only two cable shows.
Pat Buchanan, a great verbal brawler in his own right, is the only person I ever saw who could anticipate the blows.

Elizabeth Thorp: I hobnobbed with some seriously A-list celebs at the White House Correspondents Dinner after-parties.
The odd double date of Chris Matthews, his wife Kathleen (the Marriott executive) and the [Ewan] McGregors walked the red carpet at the after-party hosted by Capitol File and Bing at the Mayflower Hotel. The foursome followed on the heels of a beautiful but frosty Kim Kardashian, who certainly felt comfortable posing for an intolerable amount of time for photos. She was wearing vintage Valentino, and everyone agreed that she was stunning in person.
I was about to ask her if I could squeeze her famous bootie, but media king Jason Binn was too fast for me, whisking her away to the VIP room. Ashley Judd was beautiful in a long white dress, but she didn't take reporters' questions. Wolf Blitzer -- a co-host of the Capitol File party -- was friendly as always, and...
