Dr. Martin Luther King gave his famous “I have a dream” speech at the landmark 1963 March on Washington, but that momentous event was organized, and even was conceived, by another Civil Rights figure who is far less well-known: Bayard Rustin. The reason why you may not know Bayard Rustin is that in addition to being a fiery Civil Right organizer he was also a gay Black man, in an earlier homophobic time when even hinting someone was gay could unleashed a firestorm that might end a career, or a movement, or even led to arrest.

Elon Musk has offered his Starlink advanced satellite system to support internationally recognized aid organizations working in Gaza, following a communications outage as Israel steps up its military campaign in the territory.
Palestinian telecommunications company Paltel announced on Friday night that all landline, mobile and internet had been lost on the Gaza Strip after the Israeli bombing destroyed remaining fiber routes serving the territory.
The Israeli military action is in response to horrific terror attacks carried out by Palestinian extreme militant group Hamas in Southern Israel on October 7, which killed 1,400 people and resulted in more than 220 people being taken hostage.
Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on Saturday that the military operation in Gaza Strip had entered a “new phase.”

This post contains spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Since its very first episode, Star Trek: Lower Decks has excavated the most embarrassing parts of Star Trek lore, refusing to let even tangential parts of the franchise go forgotten. The Next Generation‘s second-worst enemy race the Pakleds became major antagonists in Lower Decks, and Boimler showed unironic appreciation for a Tom Paris commemorative plate. Heck, even the Space Fun Helmet made a brief appearance.
So it’s no surprise that Lower Decks would eventually get around to one of the great debates in Star Trek history: how do you solve a problem like Tuvix? Directed by Cliff Bole, the Voyager season two episode “Tuvix” used that old Trek standby, a transporter accident, to pose a knotty moral quandary. When an exotic plant disrupts the transporter beam carrying Vulcan security chief Tuvok and Talaxian guide/cook Neelix, the two combine into one being,...

Pat Robertson, a religious broadcaster who turned a tiny Virginia station into the global Christian Broadcasting Network, tried a run for president and helped make religion central to Republican Party politics in America through his Christian Coalition, has died. He was 93.
Robertson’s death Thursday was confirmed in an email by his broadcasting network. No cause was given.
Robertson’s enterprises also included Regent University, an evangelical Christian school in Virginia Beach; the American Center for Law and Justice, which defends the First Amendment rights of religious people; and Operation Blessing, an international humanitarian organization.
For more than a half-century, Robertson was a familiar presence in American living rooms, known for his “700 Club” television show, and in later years, his televised pronouncements of God’s judgment, blaming natural disasters on everything from homosexuality to the teaching of evolution.

Chicago – This past January, U.S. Congress California Representative Katie Porter announced her intention to run for the U.S. Senate. The populist for the people, who famously takes down unprepared corporate overlords with her profound financial knowledge (symbolically often illustrated with a white board), also appeared at the Spring Chicago Humanities Festival on April 29th for her book “I Swear: Politics is Messier Than My Minivan.” Photographer Joe Arce of HollywoodChicago.com took these Exclusive Portraits.

Rep. Porter was born in Iowa, and attended Yale University undergrad and Harvard Law School, where she studied under future Senator Elizabeth Warren. Ten years later, in 2011, she was a tenured professor at University of California Irvine Law School. One year later, she was appointed by California Attorney General Kamala Harris to become the state’s independent monitor of banks.

Even though Ego Nwodim joined “Saturday Night Live” in 2018, in many ways, this current 2022-23 season is her breakthrough year. In fact, I’d go so far as to say she deserves her first-ever Emmy nomination for Best Comedy Supporting Actress. And it’s all thanks to steak.
The sketch in question, “Lisa from Temecula,” aired February 4 with first-time host Pedro Pascal. Nwodim plays the titular woman who shocks her sister’s friends at dinner with her obsession over “extra, extra well-done” steak. “I’m about to tear this thing up,” Lisa declares when she starts cutting into the blackened piece of meat. Soon the entire table is shaking under the force of her knife and fork, and the cast members all completely break character, “Debbie Downer”-style. Watch the sketch below.

At long last, our national comedy nightmare is over. Following months of very dull politicians doing terrible things (but in a very dull way), in came George Santos swinging a sack of lies that would make classic Saturday Night Live character Tommy Flanagan blush. It’s a juicy target, and SNL‘s Bowen Yang this weekend made the most of it.

After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the United States was, understandably, on edge. The sudden, terrible scenes of destruction and death rocked the country and made us all realize that no matter what we want to tell ourselves, we are not safe. Of course, that was always true — life is random and often quite cruel. But the attacks opened our eyes in ways we didn't expect, and had us looking over our shoulders for more terrorist boogeymen.
And almost immediately after 9/11, starting on September 18, 2001, a new catalyst for fear arrived. Someone, somewhere, began mailing letters containing anthrax. Targets included several news organizations as well as Senators Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy. Ultimately, five people died and 17 others were infected. With this all starting just a week after the 9/11 attacks, it was a good bet that they were related — that the people who planned 9/11 had moved on to a new form of terrorism.

After exploring the Watergate scandal, the impeachment of Bill Clinton, and more, the podcast Slow Burn will offer a beat-by-beat accounting of the years leading up to the Iraq War when it returns for its fifth season, April 21st.
Reporter Noreen Malone helmed this investigation, which will examine how the Iraq War — now widely considered a disaster — was launched with tremendous support. The new trailer highlights interviews with people who remain staunch defenders of the invasion, as well as those who voiced early objections but didn’t get very far with them.

Tony Goldwyn and Daniel Dae Kim will star in The Hot Zone: Anthrax, which chronicles the 2001 anthrax attacks. Just the other day, in one of President Donald Trump’s daily briefings on the coronavirus, ABC News’ chief White House correspondent Jonathan Karl tried to get clarity on an important point: Will everyone who needs a ventilator be able to get one?
“Look, don’t be a cutie pie,” Trump said to Karl, before insisting that the administration’s response to the pandemic has been unprecedented.

Later this month, Hillary Clinton will host a fundraiser in Tobey Maguire’s house, the day after Barack Obama does the same at Tyler Perry’s La gaff. When did the movies and politics start cohabiting?
The ad was called, simply, “Celeb.” Just 30 seconds long, it opened by placing in montage an image of Barack Obama, just weeks from accepting the Democratic nomination for president, alongside Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, before launching into a criticism of his tax and energy policies. In the early days of August 2008, when it looked as if nothing could stop Obama’s ascension to the presidency, the ad resonated deeply with voters. And when Obama suffered a subsequent dip in the polls, many pundits, including Obama’s mentor and campaign adviser Tom Daschle, attributed it to “Celeb”.
Why was this ad so successful? In essence, it identified a lingering fear among all but Obama...

We may never know how many Netflix viewers tune in for House of Cards, but BuzzFeed reports that in the past two weeks, the show has developed quite the following among staffers and journalists on Capitol Hill. They're particularly impressed with the show's accuracy, which showrunner Beau Willimon attributes to "a crapload of research." During trips to D.C., the show's production designer, Donald Burt, obsessively photographed the Capitol, down to the sprinkler units, and writers and producers met with a variety of staffers, journalists, and lawmakers, including Senator Chuck Schumer. Kevin Spacey also sat down with Kevin McCarthy, the real House majority whip, who invited him to a closed-door House Republican conference meeting, as well as House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer. "Politics is done so poorly so often, and we were dead-set to get it right," explains Jay Carson, a former press secretary to Tom Daschle who serves as...

In 2004, Matthew Segal, a student at Ohio's Kenyon College, was frustrated when he saw his peers trying to cast their ballots, and being turned away or forced to wait on long lines. Matt became a youth vote activist, eventually founding his own organization, Save (the Student Association for Voter Empowerment). He became one of the youngest regular visitors to Capitol Hill offices, lobbying on behalf of his generation. Matt ushered several pieces of election reform legislation through Congress, and testified before Congressional committees several times. In July 2009, Matt and Save co-convened the 80 Million Strong for Young American Jobs summit, bringing together a dedicated group of young people together in Washington with political leaders including then House Majority leader Steny Hoyer and Former Senator Tom Daschle, to take action to improve the economic reality for young people. Now, at age 25, Matt has transformed Save into Our Time, with the goal of...

Nothing unites Republicans quite like the unshakable belief that Barack Obama has become the Carrie Bradshaw of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, unable to stop himself from frittering away ridiculous sums of money on frivolous things. But what Republicans never mention when railing against Obama's alleged fiscal recklessness is how much money he has spent, and what exactly he's spent it on.
Obama has slashed one tax dollar for every dollar he's spent on government programs.
To rectify the situation, Newsweek and The Daily Beast have come up with an exclusive estimate of the amount the president has spent on new legislation since taking office in January 2009. This...

Tina Fey won the most prestigious award for American humor Tuesday night, and in her acceptance speech, she joked about how the rise of conservative women in politics is bad for lesbians. The 30 Rock star and Saturday Night Live alum was presented with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, which recognizes a lifetime of achievement in American comedy, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Her career was turbocharged by her impression of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin in 2008. She is only the third woman to win the prize, following Whoopi Goldberg and Lily Tomlin. According to The Washinton Post, “In her acceptance speech, Fey touched on her best-known bit — her Palin imitation — and offered some mock hands-across-the-political-divide commentary. The rise of conservative women in politics, she said pointedly, is good for all women, "unless you don't want to pay for your own rape kit . . . unless you're...

Guess which state has the most?
An interactive map from Talking Points Memo shows how K Street, that D.C. sinkhole of faceless movers and lobbyists, is in fact full of familiar faces: your ex-Congress members.
The map details the distribution of Congress members-turned-lobbyists across the United States. Scroll over the states to find out how many high-profile career changers are out there (172) and where they come from (Texas takes first place with 17; New York's a close second with 14). Then, click a state to draw up thumbnail sketches of the men -- and five women -- who at this very moment are probably altering the course of the nation over steak at Morton's. There are more Republicans than Democrats, but not as many as you'd think. This isn't news, really. We all remember Bob Dole's maritally complex foray into lobby-dom and Tom Daschle's "special-policy" advising, which partly cost him...

Lots of news to report: Tom Daschle is a lobbyist, there's weed killer in our tap water, cold summertime soups look delicious and difficult to make, and John Hughes is still missed. Damian Kolody, an independent filmmaker in New York, on why some people were really affected by his death: Who am I? Where do I belong? These are the fundamental questions of youth on the quest for discovering their identity. In adolescence, there were some of us that just didn't seem to belong to any of the group identities that were available to us. Or perhaps the idea of faking behavior and taste to find approval from peers was a less than palatable option. Or more likely, the groups didn't want to include us. Conversations about us were sure to involve the words, weird, strange, and different. In any case...

New York -- President Barack Obama may have had a rocky relationship with Fox News Channel during the campaign. But the channel was right there among the other four when it came time for Tuesday's marathon of interviews.
Obama invited NBC's Brian Williams, CBS' Katie Couric, ABC's Charles Gibson, CNN's Anderson Cooper and Fox News Channel's Chris Wallace for back-to-back sitdowns in the Oval Office. The interviews, which were all done mid- to late afternoon, a few hours before the networks' evening newscasts, all got prominent play Tuesday night. But Wallace told The Hollywood Reporter after the interview that they all might not have gone exactly to the administration's script.
"He thought he was going to be talking about economic stimulus, but obviously the top question for everybody was about Tom Daschle," Wallace said. The Health and Human Services Secretary-designate pulled out hours before the interview because of a tax problem.

The networks will all air their interviews, done separately, over the course of the afternoon and the early evening. The interviews were requested, and coordinated, by the White House. It wasn't immediately clear how long the interviews would be.
On ABC, "World News" anchor Charles Gibson will be speaking to Obama about the economic stimulus and the rough confirmations of some of his Cabinet appointees like Timothy Geithner and Tom Daschle. Gibson's inteview will be on that night's "World News with Charles Gibson."

WASHINGTON -- A group of Senate leaders is charging the country's highest-ranking copyright official with rewriting legislation designed to punish P2P operators who entice people to illegally distribute copyrighted works. In a letter signed by four top-ranking senators, the lawmakers ask Register of Copyrights Mary Beth Peters to schedule high-level meetings with copyright owners such as the record companies and movie studios, people who run peer-to-peer networks and technology companies in an effort to build a consensus for the legislation. Senate Republican leader Sen. Bill Frist, R-Tenn., Democratic leader Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., Judiciary Committee chairman Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah; and the committee's senior Democrat, Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., signed the letter seeking Peters' assistance with the legislation. All four senators have co-authored the controversial Inducing Infringements of Copyrights Act, which allows creative artists and copyright holders to sue companies that profit from encouraging the public to commit copyright piracy.

WASHINGTON -- The Senate is seeking to give Hollywood a handful of special tax breaks in legislation it approved late Tuesday altering the IRS code for U.S. companies operating overseas. One of the provisions buried in the Jumpstart Our Business Strength, or JOBS, Act would give a special tax breaks to made-in-the-United States films and TV shows. Another provision would ensconce into law the lucrative depreciation schedule the entertainment industry enjoys for its products, and a third would give a 50% tax credit to offset the cost of creating closed captions for movies. While the provisions were included in the Senate bill that won approval on a 92-5 vote, it was unclear if it will pass the House. Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said he hoped the overwhelming Senate vote will get things moving.

WASHINGTON -- On the eve of a critical vote on legislation that would increase the fines broadcasters face for violating indecency rules, a pair of top lawmakers gave the measure a boost. Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, the No. 2 House Republican, and Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., the top Senate Democrat, each pushed the legislation before a broadcast-industry conference. "The entertainment industry, and I include the advertising industry in there, has collectively decided the bad press they suffer for producing trash is worth the benefits they enjoy for hyperstimulating the innocent imaginations of 7-year-olds with gratuitous sex and violence," DeLay told the National Association of Broadcasters annual leadership conference. "My message to you and everyone in your industry is this: The Status Quo will not stand."...
