This is Day 92 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
At the first actors to picket after Wednesday night’s breakdown of their talks with the studios and streamers, SAG-AFTRA members in New York City said that they were disappointed by the setback but “holding strong” to their demands.
Striking actors who gathered Thursday outside Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery offices also cheered the announcement of bipartisan legislation in the U.S. Senate to protect them from artificial intelligence.
Writers joining them on the picket line after ratifying their own contract this week urged the actors to stay strong.
“It’s tactics,” The Wire creator David Simon told Deadline, speaking of the studios’ decision to suspend the talks and criticize SAG-AFTRA for demanding a share of studio profits. “They say you can’t have something and you’ll never get something, and ‘DGA settled for this and you don’t understand our industry.

Excluding ‘The Avengers,’ ‘Thor’ is the only sub-franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that has spawned four movies so far, and it’s safe to say we’ll get more of Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder since the post-credit scene of his latest movie announced that “Thor will return.” There are some rumors about the potential fifth movie, while some others are saying that Thor will return only in upcoming crossover movies, but none of that has been confirmed yet.
The latest MCU movie starring Chris Hemsworth, ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ was released in July 2022, and the movie wasn’t able to repeat the success of its predecessor, 2017’s ‘Thor: Ragnarok.’ While the performances were praised, particularly Christian Bale’s as Gorr the God Butcher, the movie received mixed reviews for its screenplay, humor, visual effects, and tonal inconsistencies. The movie grossed $760 million, which is a decent commercial result,...

While some original Avengers like Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man, Chris Evans’ Captain America, and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow have bid their farewell to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, some other original members of the team are still there, and there are chances we could see more of them in the future. Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk was last seen last year in the ‘She-Hulk’ series, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye a year before in the ‘Hawkeye’ series, and the situation with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is particularly interesting.
Chris Hemsworth debuted as God of Thunder in the original ‘Thor’ movie in 2011 before he reprised the role in all four ‘Avengers’ movies and three ‘Thor’ sequels. His fourth and currently latest standalone movie, ‘Thor: Love & Thunder,’ was released in 2022, and despite mixed reviews that deemed it inferior to 2017’s ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ the movie grossed $760 million worldwide. What better way to celebrate Jamie Lee Curtis’ Oscar nomination for her work in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” then by slipping on a pair of hot dog finger gloves?
That’s exactly what a star-studded crowd did Wednesday night during a party for the Hollywood icon at Dear Jane’s in Marina del Ray.
Demi Lovato, Demi Moore, Melanie Griffith, Amy Landecker, Amanda de Cadenet, Jennifer Grey, Katey Sagal, Tiffany Haddish and Jaimie Alexander donned the gloves to sip drinks, eat turkey hot dogs and pose for laugh-filled photo ops.
“The first time I met Jamie we did a movie together called ‘She’s in the Army Now,’” Griffith told me. “This was 1980. I remember having to go through basic training with Jamie. We might have met before that, but that’s when we became friends.”
Griffith remembered, “She was very professional and very strong and very good as an actress—and so much fun.

Noirish tale of small American town, whose upstanding citizens turn out to be homicidal maniacs, features acting as feeble as the plot
Any minute you spend with this shonky thriller is likely to feel about 60 seconds too long: gone for ever, never to be clawed back. Set in the American south, it’s a noirish murder mystery – even though the whodunnit is let out of the bag after half an hour. What follows is a series of wildly implausible and shockingly acted plot twists as one upstanding citizen after another reveals themselves to be a homicidal monster.
Cole Hauser plays stockbroker Russ, who has returned to the small town where he grew up after making a packet in the big city. But Russ’s name is mud when half the town sinks their life savings in a dud investment. Then he starts getting threatening calls: “Where will you be the minute you wake up dead?...

Morgan Freeman has played more than a few men of the law throughout his career, and even at 85-years-old, he’s not done. Lionsgate Home Entertainment has released the first trailer for The Minute You Wake Up Dead, which finds Morgan Freeman starring as a sheriff who sets out to solve a shocking murder.
Be warned, the trailer for The Minute You Wake Up Dead does appear to spell out much of the movie, so keep that in mind before you watch. The Minute You Wake Up Dead was directed by Michael Mailer (Heart of Champions), who co-wrote the screenplay with Timothy Holland. In addition to Morgan Freeman, The Minute You Wake Up Dead also stars Jaimie Alexander (Thor: Love and Thunder) and Cole Hauser (Yellowstone). “This sexy, riveting noir thriller will keep you guessing,” reads the official synopsis. “After a shady small-town stockbroker begins dating a shy waitress, a...

"If you had just been patient, none of this would've been necessary." Lionsgate has revealed a trailer for a noir thriller titled The Minute You Wake Up Dead, another of these mediocre crime films being sent direct-to-vod the same day it opens in theaters. Despite the impressive cast in here, this doesn't look like an interesting film. When a shady small-town stockbroker begins dating a shy waitress, a shocking murder takes place -- and one of them may be responsible. As word leaks out that there's money behind the killing, every criminal in town wants their share of the cash. According to the synopsis, "a bloody showdown leads to a mind-blowing finale." Wow, get ready. Starring Cole Hauser, Jaimie Alexander, Andrew Stevens, Darren Mann, Tony Demil, & Morgan Freeman. There's nothing much to see here, move along folks. ›››

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
When the announcement came that “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” the third movie in Channing Tatum’s male stripper franchise, had the greenlight, it was revealed the film would premiere directly on HBO Max. However, director Steven Soderbergh says a theatrical run is still on the table. “We’re talking about it,” Soderbergh told me recently while promoting the “Magic Mike Live” tour, which makes its North American debut in Miami in October. “It’s certainly hard to argue that this isn’t a movie that’s best seen in a theater, because we have the data. People, primarily women, were going in packs, in large groups, to see the ‘Magic Mike’ movies.”
Soderbergh returns as director after helming the first “M.M.” (the second was directed by Gregory Jacobs). “That’s the discussion with Warners right now — can we eventize this?...

This is been a point of discussion for a while, but it’s one that a lot of MCU fans, well, a good number of them anyway, are still adamant about since Lady Sif has done something her Norse counterpart didn’t manage to do centuries before, and that’s to take an active role in the tales of Asgard and how they interact with Midgard or earth. While Jaimie Alexander has been a part of Thor’s story since the first movie, it would appear that she wants to take on a bigger role in the MCU, and it does sound like it

“Thor: Love and Thunder” looks to rule the box office again in its second weekend, fending off more modest openers “Where the Crawdads Sing” and “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank.”
While Marvel’s Thor fourquel has an easy path to remaining the weekend’s top release, the superhero film is taking a sizable tumble from its opening. “Love and Thunder” added 13.8 million in its second Friday, roughly 80 down from its opening day. That’s a hair stronger than Marvel’s most recent releases “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (an 81 drop on its second Friday) and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (an 84 fall), but it’s on the steeper side for the studio, particularly compared to the film’s predecessor “Thor: Ragnarok,” which fell 60 in its second Friday.
Some industry projections have “Love and Thunder” netting 45 million from 4,375 locations in its second weekend, falling below initial estimates for...

Don’t expect to see Thor: Love and Thunder: The Director’s Cut.
Taika Waititi — who directed Thor: Love and Thunder, the fourth film in the Marvel series, which opened this weekend to a franchise-best 143 million — told NME in a recent interview that he isn’t a fan of the longer versions of films featuring footage that was cut for the original theatrical run.
Asked if he was aware of a petition calling for a director’s cut, Waititi implied that he thinks they can be overstuffed and bloated.
“I watch director’s cuts of a lot of other directors. They suck,” he said. “Director’s cuts are not good. Directors need to be controlled sometimes and if I was to say, ‘Oh you wanna watch my director’s cut? It’s four and a half hours long!’ It’s not good, at four and a half hours.

Marvel and Disney’s Thor: Love and Thunder addd further fuel to the summer box office rally with a domestic opening of 143 million, the best showing of the standalone franchise starring Chris Hemsworth as the hammer-wielding superhero.
The pic opened in line with expectations in North America, where it scored the third-best opening of the pandemic era behind Spider-Man: No Way Home (260 million) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (187.4 million).
Thor: Love and Thunder also did well overseas, earning 159 million from for a global start of 302 million.
The Disney and Marvel movie is a direct sequel to Thor: Ragnarok — both were directed by the maverick filmmaker Taika Waititi — and is the fourth entry in the Thor standalone franchise. It’s also the 29th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe empire of titles.

The hammer is back in action.
Marvel’s latest superhero offering, Thor: Love and Thunder, started off its North American box office run with a Friday haul of 69.5 million, including a mighty 29.6 million in Thursday previews.
Most pundits believe Thor 4 will earn 140 million to 145 million for the weekend. Disney is being more cautious and saying 135 million to 145 million. Either way, that is ahead of the 122 million opening of Thor: Ragnarok.
The movie is also making a major push overseas, where it began rolling out midweek and earned 48.6 million through Friday from its first 42 markets.

This article contains Thor: Love and Thunder spoilers.
While 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok had a moderate (and amusing) number of cameos, Thor: Love and Thunder really ups the ante in terms of surprise walk-ons. Some of the unexpected appearances in this movie are from Marvel first-timers while others are from characters who previously showed up in either Ragnarok or those other movies about the God of Thunder that we don’t like to talk about anymore. Well, at least Thor: The Dark World—the first Thor is still pretty good if you ask us!)
There are also a handful of cameos from real-life family members of some of the film’s stars and, most intriguingly, there is a trio of ghost cameos as well, which is to say appearances that were filmed but did not make the final cut. Two are from characters we know already, while one remains a mystery as we write this.

Go back and rewatch that first Thor movie if you haven’t seen it in a while. You might have forgotten how self-serious it is. Sure, you’ve got Tom Hiddleston’s trickster-bro Loki, and Thor eating enough pancakes to give a rhino a cardiac arrest, and our man throwing a mug on the ground to proclaim his love of this mystical new elixir called “coffee.” But it’s mostly an opportunity for director Kenneth Branagh to dig into his theatrical background and reframe a “Thor-igin” story, or at least...

Director Taika Waititi is back in the Marvel business with Thor: Love and Thunder. There is a mix of horror, romance and drama, but at its core is pure comedy that doesn’t always work but is good enough to entertain. Thor: Ragnarok saw a 180-degree image and personality change for the character and stands among the best of the franchise so far. The beauty of Ragnarok is its focused storytelling and poignant message, while Thunder is a little all over the place. But Waititi’s comedic timing, and talent for creating dynamic action scenes, is too good to ignore, though it’s missing crucial elements that would push the superhero movie from being good to great.
