Sometimes, it takes a little while for a director to find their latest muse. David Cronenberg worked with many leading men throughout the 20th century — Jeff Goldblum, Jeremy Irons, James Spader — but since 2005, his go-to star has been Viggo Mortensen.
The director and actor pair have made four films together. Their first was "A History of Violence," a tale of murder infesting small town America à la the Hitchcock classic "Shadow of a Doubt." Next came "Eastern Promises," a Russian gangster drama set in London. Mortensen was just a supporting player in "A Dangerous Method," playing Sigmund Freud opposite Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung and Keira Knightly as Sabina Spielrein. For their latest collaboration "Crimes of the Future," released in 2022, Cronenberg went back to his body horror roots. Mortensen plays Saul Tenser, a man who spontaneously grows new organs and has his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux) surgically remove the aberrant organs in avant-garde art shows.

How far would you go for the one you love? When Mia, the fiancée of Roman MacGregor (Ashton Holmes), is abducted into a human trafficking ring, Roman and his brothers Brendan (Shawn Ashmore) and Deklan (Cole Hauser) decide to save Mia on their own. Brendan is the trio’s big-hearted protector, and Deklan is the troubled war vet trying to find his footing. They’re guided by Det. Avery (Bruce Willis), the cop on the case whose sense of duty will be pushed to its limits. Behind the abductions and trafficking is snake-like overlord Maxwell Livingston (Mike Epps), a man who sees people as “products” and morality as weakness.

"Can't go around kicking in doors." Lionsgate has released the first trailer for an action thriller titled Acts of Violence, yet another instantly-forgettable B-movie from nowhere starring the formerly-great Bruce Willis. In this one, Willis plays a cop investigating human trafficking and fighting a corrupted bureaucracy. The plot focuses on three Midwestern brothers, a crime lord, and Willis' cop, who are all on a deadly collision course when the youngest brother’s fiancée is kidnapped by human traffickers. So they make it a mission to save her, and of course there's plenty of guns and explosions. The cast includes Cole Hauser, Shawn Ashmore, Ashton Holmes, Melissa Bolona, Sean Brosnan, and Sophia Bush. I'm really so tired of these kind of mediocre, excessively bland action films that are a dime a dozen nowadays. Have fun. Here's the first official trailer for Brett Donowho's Acts of Violence, direct from YouTube: When...

New city, new job, same ol’ drama for Being Mary Jane‘s titular boss lady.
The Bet hit returned for its fourth season Tuesday, picking up one year after Niecy’s tasing made national headlines. Catalog From the Beyond is my chance to take a look at some of the movies found a little further down cinematic icons’ filmographies. Most of our favorite directors have plenty to offer beyond the material they’ve become irrevocably linked to over the years. These films may be only slightly lesser-known than their big name counterparts, or they may be movies no one has ever heard of. They might be hidden gems that don’t get enough love, or it may be a title that jumps out of the horror genre.
In fact, that’s just the type of movie I’d like to start with in my first go-around. It’s a movie that, while certainly dark, isn’t typically acknowledged as a horror film. It is, however, the work of one of my favorite horror directors of all-time. Today, we take a look at A History of Violence.

Alicia Witt's tour-de-force turn as the spitfire Nina Turner is the main draw of Will Slocombe's Cold Turkey, a fitfully amusing dysfunctional holiday comedy in the vein of Home for the Holidays.

If there’s a moral to the story, or a lesson to be learned from last night’s episode of Supernatural, it’s that humanity isn’t so bad after all! How’d I figure that? Well, Castiel seems to be acclimating, heck, even enjoying it, and unless I’m misreading that last shot we got of Crowley, he’s chasing after his humanity too.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves – before we get there we have a very hot special angel to deal with.
We start off with some good news. Kevin has managed to translate the angel tablet! Of course, he’s translated it into a dead language that scholars have attempted to decipher for centuries with no luck but hey, it’s still progress. The collective light bulb goes off, though, and the boys decide to ask Crowley for help, figuring he might recognize the “doodles.

Things are going to be very different in the Hamptons when "Revenge" returns for Season 3 in the fall of 2013. And now it seems that there is a new change in store: Ashley Madekwe will leave the show.
As first reported by Deadline, the "Revenge" producers chose not to renew Madekwe's option for another season. Apparently, the reasoning behind this is based on the show's upcoming plot. If so, it's not a huge surprise, since -- of all the "Revenge" characters -- only Ashley Davenport ended Season 2 with no big stories to come.
Ashley was initially key to the main plots of "Revenge." As a friend of Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp), Ashley introduced the scheming purveyor of vengeance to her targets, the Graysons. The party planner-turned-personal assistant then managed to have a brief affair with Daniel's friend, Tyler (Ashton Holmes). When Tyler turned out to be a Daniel-obsessed psycho, all Ashley...

Exclusive: Ashley Davenport is done scheming on ABC‘s Revenge. I’ve learned that British actress Ashley Madekwe will not return to the soapy drama next season. Her option was not picked up due to what I hear were storyline reasons. Madekwe has been on Revenge since the pilot, but her character went through metamorphoses. Ashley was introduced as Victoria Grayson’s (Madeleine Stowe) event planner and a friend to Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp), who brought her into the Grayson family. Driven by ambition, she fell for the diabolical Tyler (Ashton Holmes) and eventually managed to bed both Conrad Grayson (Henry Czerny) and his son Daniel (Joshua Bowman). By the end of Season 1, Ashley’s storyline played out, but the producers found a way to bring her back in a new role as Conrad’s assistant and then PR for his political campaign. Friday (neo)Noir: ‘A History of Violence’ marks Cronenberg’s stunning venture into high minded drama
A History of Violence
Written by Josh Olsen
Directed by David Cronenberg
U.S.A., 2005
2005, judging by the theatrical releases, was an exceptional year for the neonoir sub-genre. Last summer, for the special Friday (neo)Noir series, reviews for Rian Johnson’s breakout independent hit Brick and Robert Rodriguez’s cinematic visualization of Sin City, both from 2005, were written. A couple of weeks ago another neonoir from the same year was put under the microscope, Shane Black’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. This week features, yes, still another entry from that illustrious year, one from the most lauded director of the bunch, David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence.
Set in Millbrook, Indiana, A History of Violence shares the tale of the Stalls, namely Tom (Viggo Mortensen), Edie (Maria Bello) and their son Jack (Ashton Holmes), all of whom live a reasonably quiet life, with the exception of Jack, a...

Former As the World Turns hunk Jesse Soffer has joined the cast of NBC's modern-day Hatfields & McCoys drama, Deadline reports. Offer will appear as a prodigal son of the McCoy clan who returns to the fold just as the feud starts to heat up again. Now, if only I had more reason to include the phrase "Former As the World Turns hunk" more often.
The story of the ratings for The Americans has been a bumpy road. The espionage drama had a big debut, (what looked like) a large second-week drop-off and followed with a big gain from DVR viewers. Thankfully, the nervous part is over as FX has ordered a second season, meaning we'll get to keep seeing Matthew Rhys in a variety of disguises. Additionally, Nielsen has finished counting the viewers for the premiere and it now ranks as FX's most-watched series debut.

Mira Sorvino has joined Jim Gaffigan's untitled CBS comedy pilot, Deadline reports.
The "Mighty Aphrodite" and "Romy and Michelle" star will play Jeannie, a "super-mom and super-wife" of Gaffigan's central character. The pilot focuses on Jim (Gaffigan), who lives with his wife and their five kids in a two bedroom apartment in New York -- but in typical sitcom fashion, Jeannie often finds herself playing parent to her husband, too.

Two more actors are getting "Reckless." The ABC drama centers around a reserved engineer called David who will stop at nothing to rescue his wife after she disappears in the midst of a military coup in East Myanmar. Lou Taylor Pucci will play Ryan Harrison, "a twentysomething family screw-up" who lacks motivation. Ashton Holmes has been cast as Wyatt Bickford, a college acquaintance of David's who represents a private security contractor. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Season 2 of ABC’s hit soap Revenge doesn’t kick off in its new Sunday timeslot until September, but the folks who bring the soapy happenings of The Hamptons to life are already hard at work on new episodes. At this weekend’s ABC TCA party at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Gabriel Mann, who quickly became a fan favorite as the sharp-tongued Nolan, chatted about the new season including his character’s new love interest – a woman – and what some of the pressures are coming off a strong freshman season.
Yes, you read that right. Nolan will get involved with a woman in the new season. Even though Nolan’s horizontal liaison with the now deceased Tyler (Ashton Holmes) was a big part of last year’s canvas, Mann said he wasn’t necessarily surprised when he heard the news. “I figured something like that was coming,” he said.

Director Xavier Gens delves into the basement of humanity for the post-apocalyptic horror of The Divide. Here’s our review of a singularly grim film…
If The Divide were a big-budget, high-concept Jerry Bruckheimer movie, the pitch to Hollywood executives might be something along the lines of “It’s The Lord Of The Flies in a New York basement”. Like William Golding’s novel, The Divide is about the murkier, primal area of human nature, and it’s probably the bleakest genre film you’ll see all year.
Director Xavier Gens wastes no time in laying his premise out. Nuclear bombs land on Manhattan, and seconds before they’re obliterated by the firestorm, a handful of tenement building residents scramble into a basement for protection. Fortunately for them - or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it - the building’s twitchy superintendent Mickey (Michael Biehn) has made provision for such a disaster,...

Xavier Gens proved he loved intensity with Frontier(s) and he set out to show it wasn’t a fluke with the bomb shelter mayhem of The Divide. The movie focuses on a group of blast survivors who are safely trapped in their apartment basement with supplies that threaten to get used up before true help can arrive. It stars Lauren German, Michael Biehn, Milo Ventimiglia, Courtney B. Vance, Iván González, Michael Eklund with Ashton Holmes and Rosanna Arquette. Now, you can own the flick on DVD/Blu-ray. What do you have to do? Well, we’re going to randomly pick 7 winners and toss them into a basement for as long as it takes. The last person standing wins. It’s sort of our version of that contest where you have to keep touching a truck or something in order to win it. Only bloodier. Just kidding. We can’t legally do that (yet), so here’s...
