The writers strike has taken a bite out of Blade.
Marvel Studios is shutting down pre-production on its vampire thriller starring Mahershala Ali, which was set to begin filming next month in Atlanta. The feature project, which has already been paused once before, becomes the first tentpole movie impacted by the strike.
Cast and crew members are being notified this afternoon.
Blade had recently hired True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto to work on the script, but, according to an insider, “time simply ran out.” The studio will restart the production once the strike is over.
Since the strike action began Tuesday, the biggest impact has been on late night talk shows and Saturday Night Live. One drama series, Showtime’s Billions, halted production Thursday due to picketing.
While some studios have one or two movies going into production, Marvel is seemingly propping up the industry by planning on having three...

This article contains MCU spoilers.
It’s over! It’s officially over. Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally in our rear view mirror, and what did we learn? We learned that Marvel Studios wasn’t going to stop taking risks after capping off Phase 3 with the box office juggernaut of Avengers: Endgame. In fact, they were going to take more risks than ever. Sometimes, those risks paid off. Other times, they did not. But during a transformative time for the MCU, Phase 4 was, for the most part, determined not to offer the one thing that would have made older fans happy but would have perhaps discouraged newer, younger fans from emerging: more of the same.
As such, the MCU got a whole slate of brand-new and diverse characters. Moon Knight, the Eternals, Ms. Marvel, Shang-Chi, She-Hulk, Kate Bishop, Yelena Belova, John Walker, Ironheart, Agatha, Red Guardian, Clea, Echo,...

Kumail Nanjiani is talking about the potential sequel to Eternals, the Marvel film directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao.
During an appearance in a podcast, Nanjiani was asked about the superhero movie after his co-star Patton Oswalt hinted that a sequel was in the works.
“I have no idea,” Nanjiani said on the Bingeworthy podcast by The Playlist. “I don’t think Patton was right. I think that there was a hoax website – one of those where it’s like one letter off from the real one. They tweeted it, and it spread around and I think that’s what Patton saw. I honestly don’t know anything. I would love for Kingo to come back. I love playing that character. That one’s very fun to play, you’re just in a good mood. You do finger guns, you’re like a movie star – what’s not to love?...

This feature contains spoilers for Marvel’s Eternals.
Eternals is now streaming on Disney+, and many people who missed seeing it on the big screen are finally getting a chance to check out what they might have heard is a rare misstep from Marvel Studios in the comfort of their own home. Meanwhile, others are wondering if Eternals is worth revisiting at all after struggling with it the first time.
I fall into a different category. I found Eternals pretty enjoyable and a welcome departure from your standard MCU installment, but was looking forward to seeing it again because I had a feeling that some of the film’s problems might be reduced after I’d had time to sit with its secrets, and I did indeed find that to be the case. Mostly.
There are things that still feel lackluster about Eternals and that probably won’t age as...

Sorry Marvel bros, Harry Styles was part of the "Eternals" game from day one. In fact, according to Ryan and Kaz Firpo — who wrote the script alongside director Chloé Zhao and co-writer Patrick Burleigh — Styles' Starfox was originally considered as a main player in the film, not just the post-credits scene.
"[Eros was] definitely a card that went up on the board to be in the main movie" at the beginning of the process, Ryan told The Direct in an interview. "You know, when we first started doing our pitch, we basically just had all these cards of, let's...

When an ostensibly crowd-pleasing superhero movie ends up with as much of a mixed reaction as "Eternals" did, there are bound to be several very specific elements that can be singled out as divisive. Although the narrative to this point has largely focused on how Chloé Zhao's singular vision proved to be at fundamental odds with the more conventional approach that Marvel Studios prefers to run things, the truth would seem to be that the film was a very smooth collaboration between Zhao and the other credited writers on the screenplay -- Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo, and Kaz Firpo.

Even before working on Eternals, Patrick Burleigh had experienced a Marvel Studios baptism by fire. The screenwriter landed a spot in the Marvel Writer’s Program in 2016, where he and three others spent a year going through the company’s back catalog of comic books to pitch fresh ways to adapt the studio’s characters. Burleigh then moved to production writing on Ant-Man and the Wasp, a pressure-cooker situation that had him penning roughly 25 pages a day.

Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao directs the latest Marvel superhero adventure, Eternals, which attempts to make a few subtle-but-important shifts in the MCU. As such, it’s largely successful, though the standard Marvel formula is nigh-on indomitable and remains firmly in place.
Based on characters and concepts created by Jack Kirby in 1974, Eternals posits that alien beings called Celestials created a race of immortal, super-powered humanoids called Eternals and sent them to Earth 7,000 years ago, in order to protect humanity from invading alien monsters known as Deviants. The Eternals extinguished the last of the Deviants some 500 years ago, so it’s understandably concerning when one of them attacks Sersi (Gemma Chan) in present-day London.

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for both “Eternals” and its post-credits scenes.]
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has never shied away from tossing major narrative bombs into its films after they’ve — quite literally — ended, but Chloé Zhao’s “Eternals” offers a few more twists to the formula. Not only does the Oscar winner’s first Marvel feature conclude with plenty of table-setting for more action to come, it does that within both the film’s primary running time (kinda new!) and in a pair of post-credits scenes (the usual land of all those late-breaking twists).
Zhao’s eons-spanning epic introduces the titular Eternals — essentially, a race of immortal beings who have been (secretly) hanging out on Earth for thousands of years — and sees what happens when their apparent dedication to the safety of Earth’s inhabitants is threatened by a wide variety of forces. That’s the short version, but suffice it to say, it ends with...

Chicago – At some point, everything evolves. This isn’t something that’s exclusive to Pokemon, but a process that all of us have undergone to get to where we are. Evolution is always gradual, only made noticeable to us in retrospect. Are you exactly the same person that you were 10 years ago? Hopefully not.
There will come a point when we look back at Eternals with much more generous eyes and realize that not only is this a good film, but a necessary one.

“It’s the most challenging Marvel movie and it’s an honor to make something that feels different,” the filmmaker added on today’s Hero Nation podcast about the film he penned with his cousin Ryan Firpo, Marvel vet Patrick Burleigh, and Zhao.
With talk of ideas for the potential sequel, the Eternals who were cut and more, listen here:

Spoiler Warning: This article discusses brief references in Marvel Studios’ “Eternals” that, while in no way related to the plot of the film that opens on Nov. 5, could be considered spoilers.
A throwaway pop-culture reference in a Marvel Studios movie is usually as common as a form-fitting unitard. But when Disney released a featurette last week for Chloé Zhao’s “Eternals,” in which a child refers to the Eternal named Ikaris (Richard Madden) as “Superman,” the moment was enough to launch dozens of deep-dive reaction videos and head–spinning tweets wondering “What does this all mean?!”
In the scene in question, Ikaris and Sersi (Gemma Chan) are at the home of Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), a fellow Eternal who has started a family with his human husband, Ben (Haaz Sleiman), and their child, Jack (Esai Daniel Cross), who saw Ikaris fighting an evil Deviant on TV.

Alexander the Great may have wept when he found himself with no more worlds to conquer, but super-producer Kevin Feige — having usurped every screen on Earth and reshaped the global entertainment landscape in his own image — merely straightened his baseball cap and announced that it was time to begin the next phase of his crusade. He knew there were more planets to rule, more parallel dimensions to explore, and more revenue streams for Disney shareholders to tap dry.
Most of all, Feige knew that it wasn’t enough to dominate the creative arts; if the Marvel brand were to achieve its rightful place in the hearts and minds of all humanity, it would have to unseat the Creator themselves. A major step towards achieving a kind of singularity between the Marvel Cinematic Universe (lucrative and popular) and the Actual Physical Universe (prestigious but full of fading stars), “Eternals” starts by...

Columbia Pictures’ “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” hopped up to second in China this weekend, but was unable to scurry past local sports drama “Never Stop” despite an extra day’s lead.
“Peter Rabbit 2” grossed a relatively unremarkable $969,000 (RMB6.2 million) on opening day Friday but managed to pull in $7.8 million from 10,500 screens over the three-day holiday weekend, according to data from ticketing agency Maoyan. Monday marks the national Chinese holiday of the Dragon Boat Festival, and will likely bringing further sales for the family-friendly film. Based on early estimates, Sony projects that it will gross $11.1 million by the end of the extended four-day weekend — putting it 15% ahead of recent comp “Raya and the Last Dragon.”
Its total performance may not, however, be enough for the sequel to best the first film’s $26.3 million China cumulative back in 2018. Maoyan currently predicts “Peter Rabbit 2” will gross a total of $18.9 million in the territory.

Of all the movies on Marvel Studios’ upcoming slate, “Eternals” has been the most mysterious, between its sprawling and multicultural ensemble, its Oscar-winning auteur director in Chloé Zhao and its story of a race of immortal beings who have secretly been on Earth for millennia. With the teaser trailer finally released to the world, we now have a greater sense of how Zhao will be integrating her unique cinematic eye to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and how the Eternals will fit inside the MCU.
Here’s what we’ve learned.
The Eternals are an integral — but invisible — part of human history
Set to Skeeter Davis’ haunting song “The End of the World,” we first meet the Eternals as their massive, totemic ship appears before a small tribe of early humans, many thousands of years in our past. As the Eternals’ leader Ajak (Salma Hayek) explains in voice-over, the Eternals have “watched,...

Exclusive: Universal Pictures and Working Title have an updated feature version of The Borrowers in development, based on the Mary Norton book series of the same name. Sausage Party and The Addams Family filmmaker Conrad Vernon is in talks to helm off a screenplay by Patrick Burleigh.
The Borrowers is an action adventure that follows a family of tiny people who live secretly in the walls and floors of an English house and “borrow” from the big people in order to survive. Working Title and Polygram, which was later absorbed by Universal in 1998, originally released a live-action feature adaptation in 1997 starring John Goodman and Jim Broadbent, and directed by Peter Hewitt. The pic grossed close to $23 million at the domestic box office. Similar to the first movie, the new version will be a live-action take, I hear.

The first “Peter Rabbit” movie ends with one of the human leads turning the story into an illustrated storybook; “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” sees that author grappling with turning the bunny story into a grotesque exaggeration of itself in order to reach a larger audience.
And in the same way that a bad dancer apologizing for stepping on your foot doesn’t mean he isn’t stepping on your foot, saying you’re a shameless, market-driven cash grab doesn’t mean you’re not a shameless, market-driven cash grab.
Meta-text aside, this sequel benefits from the diminished expectations held by almost anyone who watched its predecessor; this time at least, some of the gags actually land, be they verbal or physical, plus we get the added delight of David Oyelowo as a smooth-talking publisher who thinks the books would sell better if the rabbits wore T-shirts and high-top sneakers or,...

Beatrix Potter’s beloved literary character Peter Rabbit suffered from a bit of an identity crisis in his contemporized big-screen debut. In 2018’s “Peter Rabbit,” his headstrong, mischievous spirit didn’t bear more than a passing resemblance to the fundamental virtues the author had fused into her expansive children’s book series. He was reckless, arrogant and downright wicked, barely learning much from the ramifications of his dastardly, chaotic shenanigans. The release itself even caused a kerfuffle over allergy bullying, with some parents and one major organization objecting to a scene where the CG hare terrorizes his harried human adversary with an allergen, which led to the studio having to issue an apology.
But in returning director Will Gluck’s “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway,” we reunite with a far more remorseful, practically rehabilitated rabble-rouser, who’s struggling to rectify how the world sees him versus how he sees himself.

Proving every bit as charmless and frenetic as its 2018 CG-animated predecessor, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway once again goes about chaotically tossing bunny droppings over the perfectly fertile ground that is the Beatrix Potter source material.
While the author herself was the first to admit that her main protagonist could be “naughty,” returning director Will Gluck, this time teaming with Patrick Burleigh on the underplotted script, chooses to further nudge the definition toward the brattier limits of mischievous — pushing Peter more into the guise of a floppy-eared Alvin than a cotton-tailed Paddington. Peter Rabbit hit theaters in February 2018 as a hybrid live-action/CGI franchise reboot that injected the classic stories of Beatrix Potter with contemporary energy. The result was a film that – akin to the stealthy precision of Peter in Farmer McGregor’s garden – quietly banked $115 million domestically, totaling $351.2 million globally, and was even the U.K.’s top family film of 2018, out-grossing Pixar’s Coco.
Consequently, it didn’t take Sony Pictures long to consider Peter Rabbit 2, giving it the official greenlight and a 2020 release date; a move made just one month after the original’s release. Indeed, main cast members such as the voice of the larcenous lepus himself, James Corden, as well as Domhnall Gleeson and Rose Byrne, are set to return, as will director Will Gluck, who, just as with the first film, wrote the script with Patrick Burleigh.

Millie Bobby Brown has already managed to tick off an impressive amount of franchises in her career so far. Obviously, she’s most known as Eleven in Stranger Things, she’s fought Kaiju monsters in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and she’s about to play Sherlock Holmes’ sister in Enola Holmes. But could Power Rangers be the next move for the teen star? Perhaps, as we’re hearing that it’s a possibility.
Mighty Morphin fans will know that Paramount is moving forward with a reboot of the color-coordinated heroes, with a director (Jonathan Entwistle) and writer (Patrick Burleigh) already attached. They’re now planning out how this incarnation of the team is going to go down and it seems the studio is looking for the biggest young talent around to play the Rangers.

Remember all the hubbub about the 2017 Power Rangers movie before it came out? It was much discussed that the film would feature the franchise’s first openly gay lead. As it turned out, though, this major bit of Lgbt representation actually amounted to a brief line alluding to Becky G’s Yellow Ranger maybe having “girlfriend troubles.” As we know though, Paramount is now working on another reboot and this time, it looks like they could actually deliver on the promise of the last one.
We Got This Covered has received an influx of information about the studio’s plans for Power Rangers and it seems they’re very keen to have a diverse team of heroes. This includes the first female Red Ranger in PR history and a mostly non-male line-up. Paramount is powering up those Mighty Morphin heroes once again for another reboot, but this new Power Rangers movie is set to be an even bolder reinvention than the last one. One of the best things about Lionsgate’s 2017 film was the increased diversity of the teen super-squad, with it featuring cinema’s first autistic (Blue) and Lgbtq (Yellow) costumed heroes. The next one could go one step further though and give the team a female leader.

Following Hasbro buying the brand from Saban a couple of years ago, Paramount is working on a new Power Rangers reboot that won’t have anything to do with the Lionsgate movie from 2017. At the end of last year, we finally got some details about the project as well, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming that Jonathan Entwistle is attached to direct based on a script from Patrick Burleigh.
The plot will put a unique twist on the franchise and feature a bunch of modern-day Rangers being sent back into the 1990s, where – in classic Back to the Future style – they have to work out how to return to their own time. That’s all that THR told us, however, so it was unclear whether the film’s period setting would have any connection to the original Mighty Morphin series. We Got This Covered can now report, though, that this looks to be the case.

The future is precarious for Peter Rabbit, as he realizes that happy families lead to babies — which means he could get thrown out on his fluffy little tail if his reputation as a furry troublemaker keeps up.
In the latest trailer for “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” released Wednesday, our bunny hero gets tired of being scolded for stealing tomatoes or causing mayhem in the garden and decides to take matters into his own paws by hitting the road.
So he takes his motley crew of animals to Shangri-La (a.k.a. the farmers market). “We’re going to rob this place, are you in or are you out?” he asks them. Of course, not all goes according to plan and when a few of the critter criminals end up behind bars, it is Peter’s job to rescue them.

The Power Rangers are returning to the big screen thanks to Jonathan Entwistle, who is perhaps best known as the creator of the Netflix dark comedy series The End of the F***ing World. Entwistle is in early talks to direct a new iteration of Power Rangers for Paramount Pictures from a script which is being written by Peter Rabbit 2 scribe Patrick Burleigh.
Allspark, a Hasbro Studios company, will produce. Paramount and Hasbro, Inc. struck a deal in 2017 to produce and distribute content based on Hasbro brands, as well as original stories. Hasbro acquired Haim Saban’s flagship Saban’s Power Rangers property and other entertainment brands last year.
Launched in 1993, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is among TV’s longest-running kids’ live-action series with almost 900 episodes to date in several incarnations. The last Power Ranger pic was released by Lionsgate in 2017. That film grossed $85.4 million domestic and $142.3M worldwide.

Paramount Pictures is in early negotiations with Jonathan Entwistle, who is best known for his Netflix series “The End of the F***ing World”, to develop a new take on “Power Rangers” for the studio.
The was a popular ’90s TV series involved a group of kids who become superheroes. The show first aired on Fox Kids, then in the 2000s on Disney-owned channels and included a movie in 1995.

The 2017 reboot of Power Rangers wasn’t exactly a big hit or very popular with moviegoers, bringing in just over $140 million at the box office and earning mediocre reviews, despite Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer telling us before its release that the studio was hoping to do “five, or six, or even seven” installments. So much for that, eh?

Another feature film reboot of the campy ’90s kids show “Power Rangers” is in the works, moving over to Paramount and Hasbro from Lionsgate, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo is set to join the cast of Sony Pictures’ “Peter Rabbit 2,” the live-action hybrid sequel to the 2018 family hit, sources tell Variety.
He joins Rose Byrne and Domhnall Gleeson, who are returning from the first film, as is James Corden in the voice of the mischievous Peter Rabbit. Writer-director Will Gluck is back at the helm of the sequel, and is also producing through his Olive Bridge Entertainment banner, along with Animal Logic’s Zareh Nalbandian. The screenplay is by Gluck and Patrick Burleigh.
Plot details are vague other than it following the adventures of Peter as he continues to stir up trouble with his fellow furry friends. It is also unknown who Oyelowo will be playing, but it will be a live-action role like Gleeson and Byrne’s.
The first “Peter Rabbit” film was a hit globally, taking in over $350 million worldwide, including $115 million domestically.
