Despite growing up in Kenya, with a vibrant natural world "in our backyard," Lupita Nyong'o says she learned plenty after she signed on to narrate the six-part Discovery Channel documentary Serengeti. Produced and directed by nature doc veteran John Downer and American Idol creator Simon Fuller, Serengeti chronicles daily life on the African plains, achieving a sense of intimacy with the natural world by following the film's animal subjects for more than a year.

When Lupita Nyong’o was asked to narrate the Discovery nature documentary series “Serengeti,” the Oscar-winning actor jumped at the opportunity — not just because the subject celebrated to her heritage as an African woman, but because it was an offer she never expected.
“I hadn’t really heard of a nature documentary narrated by a woman. And I certainly had never heard of a nature documentary narrated by an African woman,” Nyong’o tells Variety. “I was really excited to try my hand at it. And who doesn’t want to play the voice of God. And that’s what it kind of feels like when you watch those documentaries — there’s so much authority in the voice and they’re interpreting nature and bringing nature to your living room.”
And as narrator, Nyong’o says the team behind “Serengeti” (especially executive producers and directors Simon Fuller and John Downer) wanted...

The great pride on Discovery Channel’s “Serengeti” is not so great at forgiveness.
On Sunday, Kali tests the waters (ironically in the grassland region of northern Tanzania) as to whether or not she and her cubs will be let back in to the group, despite that big scarlet “A” permanently shaved into her fur. Yeah, she had cubs outside of the pride, a real no-no in the lion community.
Much like their plains-mates the elephants, lions apparently never forget, and Kali and her kids are not welcome back. At least, not for now.
Watch the video above, which is exclusive to TheWrap.

John Downer, the director of Discovery's new nature documentary Serengeti, says there are lessons to take from the animal world.
They say editing is the soul of cinema. Rarely has that been more apt than in Discovery’s upcoming nature documentary Serengeti.
Serengeti, produced by American Idol’s Simon Fuller, directed by John Downer, and narrated by Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, is a little bit different than your traditional nature doc. Nature, and particularly the Serengeti region of Africa in which Serengeti is set, is an inherently fascinating place. Hundreds of species of animals live together in a vibrant ecosystem in a desert habitat. One thing the Serengeti doesn’t necessarily have, however, is a storyline. Putting natural life in a classic three-act structure is solely the domain of humanity. So that’s exactly what the humans do in Serengeti.

If you were captivated by the recent hyper-visual CG-laden The Lion King, then the Discovery Channel’s upcoming Serengeti will make your jaw hit the floor — because it is real life. With the series premiering August 4, it’s close to the release of the new iteration of the Disney film and creator and producer Simon Fuller and director and producer John Downer admitted that it was just a coincidence.
“We certainly weren’t planning it,” said Downer of the release dates of Serengeti and The Lion King. He said he hasn’t seen the movie yet, but he said he did see the trailer and realized that it looked like their series.
“There is a convergence there,” added Downer. “The Lion King is going for photo-realism. We’re going for realism…we are trying to do something different.”
