Summer-fun-and-slashing tale of camp counsellors in bloody peril has clear cinematic ancestors but the young cast gives it fresh appeal
This silly but pleasingly jolly horror film offers an update on that perennial staple of the genre: the summer camp beset by a supernatural malignancy. And much like a campfire tale tailor-made to terrify impressionable listeners, this has a streak of self-referentiality that makes it feel ludic as well as lurid. After a 1940s-set prologue that’s explained later, the story settles into the 1980s, a time when this sort of summer-fun-and-slashing package with a large ensemble cast was all the rage.
It’s the last day of the season at Camp Briarbrook, and the assorted kids get ready to head home after one last performance-assembly in the mess hall. The camp counsellors, who predictably span the spectrum from theatre nerds and dweebs to glossy teen beauties ripe for terrorising,...

Director Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight, Long Lost) is back with slasher throwback She Came from the Woods, which is headed home this weekend.
After being released in theaters earlier this year, She Came from the Woods is now slashing its way onto Tubi on Saturday, June 10. Check out a gallery of exclusive character posters below, along with the previously released trailer for the 1980s-style summer camp slasher.
In She Came from the Woods, “A group of counselors unleashes a decades-old evil, long buried secrets, and bloody mayhem on the last night of summer camp in 1987.”
Matt Donato wrote in his review for Bloody Disgusting, “Even as a warmup act to the heavy hitters worshiped by slasher fans since the dawn of internet forums, She Came from the Woods stands its ground as an example of how no subgenre is dead with the proper approach.”

Diverse festival notables from Hannah Ha Ha to The Blue Caftan join a spattering of specialty horror titles led by Consecration, and the U.S. theatrical debut of Gaspar Noé’s controversial Irréversible: Straight Cut.
The last is presented by Altered Innocence, whose owner Frank Jaffe spoke with Deadline about why he wanted to give Noe’s unusual 2019 director’s cut — of the Argentinian/French director’s disturbing 2002 film Irreversible — a release Stateside. “It’s a film that needs to be seen. Or made available,” he said. StudioCanal approached him twice. “They said, ‘No one is brave enough to take on this film. Will you?’” And “there is an audience for it…Tickets are selling.”
Jaffe said he first watched Irreversible, or tried to, via Netflix mail order DVD when he was 14. “My dad made me turn it off halfway through.”

Erik Bloomquist's horror flick, She Came From The Woods, is in cinemas today and we have a clip to share with you in case you need any more coaxing to check it out. It's a short one but involves taking out a camper with a homerun swing for the fences. That's a win in our books. Check it out below. She Came From The Woods, the latest genre flick from Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight). The horror film, releasing only in theaters on February 10th, stars Cara Buono (Stranger Things), William Sadler (Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey), Spencer List (Fringe), and Clare Foley (Sinister). A film that “perfectly pays homage to the classics and cult favorites of the early years of the...

If you didn’t know Erik Bloomquist’s She Came from the Woods loves the 80s like Pac-Man loves Mrs. Pac-Man, the first few minutes should sell a tubular on-screen time warp. Hormonal camp counselors in short shorts prepare for summer’s end while Kim Wilde’s “Kids In America” blares over opening credits like any other Camp Crystal Lake or Camp Arawak copycat. Bloomquist imbues a love of 80s sleepaway horror titles into a contemporary take on Friday the 13th, The Burning, Madman — some titles are even name-dropped in dialogue. It’s hardly a modern satire like Cabin in the Woods but avoids feeling redundant through recreations of golden-age genre magic that’s gone out of style. There’s a passionate attempt to prove life can find new ways in a decade’s old slasher formula, and She Came from the Woods keeps the beat(ings) alive for now.

In his Frightfest review, James Doherty wrote that She Came from the Woods is a "fun and entertaining campfire tale," and as someone who saw the movie as part of last year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival lineup, I can concur that the latest film from director Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight) definitely scratches that summer camp slasher itch. Ahead of the film's February 10th theatrical release from Mainframe Pictures, the official trailer has now been released, giving viewers a look at the horrors unleashed at Camp Briarbrook, set fittingly to the tune of Kim Wilde's ’80s anthem "Kids in America."

"Let's try not to die tonight." Mainframe Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror comedy titled She Came from the Woods, opening in limited US theaters starting in February soon. It first premiered at FrightFest last year, but didn't hit any other fests in the fall. In this ode to '80s slasher horror, a group of dumb camp counselors accidentally unleash a decades' old evil on the last night of summer camp. As the mayhem and madness turn bloody, the staff of "Camp Briarbrook" are forced to confront what stories are worth telling and what secrets worth keeping. The horror comedy stars Cara Buono (from Stranger Things), William Sadler (Bill & Ted), Spencer List, Clare Foley, Michael Park, Tyler Elliot Burke, Adam Weppler, Ehad Berisha, Giselle Torres, and Dań Leahy. This looks, ahem, campy and not that scary but fun, another throwback riff on 1980s horror...

Director Erik Bloomquist’s horror film She Came from the Woods is set to reach theatres on February 10th – tickets are already available for purchase at Regal, AMC, and Harkins – and to help you decide whether or not this is a movie you’d like to check out on the big screen, we have the trailer embedded above. The film stars Cara Buono of Stranger Things – and just like Stranger Things, She Came from the Woods is set in the 1980s. Buono also had a role in the Let the Right One In remake Let Me In, which was set in the ’80s as well. Genre projects keep taking her back to that decade.

Exploited gets off to a start that certainly lives up to its title as webcam performer Caleb is beaten to death in mid-performance.
Move forward a few months to the start of a new school year and Brian (Jordan Ver Hoeve; 666: Teen Warlock) is moving into his dorm room and starting college life. After walking in on his roommate Jeremy and his girlfriend Lexi he starts to get settled in. He doesn’t notice a flash drive identical to the one the school gave him sitting on the desk. He’s in for a nasty shock as it contains videos of the online sexual activity of the room’s previous occupant. And, in the last video, being murdered.

A mysterious figure terrorises a camp full of teenagers in She Came From the Woods, a supernatural horror from director Erik Bloomquist, who also co-wrote the script with his brother, Carson Bloomquist. Creepy, suspenseful and suitably gory, it’s a genre-savvy throwback to the summer camp slasher genre.
Set in 1987 (so no pesky mobile phones), the film takes place during the last night of the summer holiday at Camp Briarbrook, run by kindly Gilbert McAlister (William Sadler) his adult daughter Heather (Cara Buono) and her two teenage sons, irresponsible Peter (Spencer List) and sensible Shawn (Tyler Elliot Burke).
When Peter persuades the other teen volunteers to perform a ghost story ritual (a ridiculously simple one – prick your finger and shout “Agatha!”), he...

Many people have fond memories of summer camp – for some it’s making life-long friends, roasting smores and hanging out by the lake; for others it’s watching Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp or The Burning on TV with the curtains drawn. Yes, summer camp and the things that happen there hold a special place in the hearts of many. However, this isn’t the case for the counsellors of Briarbrook summer camp. The summer of 1987 is one they would want to forget.
She Came From the Woods tells the tale of a summer camp run by three generations of the McCaliister family. Patriarch, Gilbert (William Sadler) has been a part of the camp for decades but this summer could be his last. General running of the camp is left to his daughter, Heather (Cara Buono), whilst her sons also work on site.

The mysterious disappearance of the webcam model ends up with their lives being manipulated and blackmailed. The film "tells a provocative story set on a college campus against the backdrop of a voyeuristic hacker. Real world fears such as personal privacy and camming are explored in this psychological thriller." The film stars Sierra McCormick, Makenzie Vega, Leah Pipes, Will Peltz, Spencer List, Jordan Ver Hoeve, Colin Bates, and Hannah Rose May. It doesn't look like there's much to see here - skip it.

In today’s film news roundup, Sony moves James Gunn’s horror movie, Craig Sheffer gets a supernatural role, “Best Thanksgiving Ever” gets a release and Annapurna signs a music publishing deal.
Date Change
Sony has moved the previously untitled James Gunn horror project “BrightBurn” back from Nov. 30 of this year to May 24, 2019 — the start of the Memorial Day weekend.
The studio unveiled the name “BrightBurn” on Monday along with the date change. Gunn produced the project with The H Collective. “BrightBurn” stars Elizabeth Banks, Jackson Dunn, David Denman, Meredith Hagner, and Matt Jones. Gunn’s brother Brian Gunn and cousin Mark Gunn wrote the script, with David Yarovesky directing.
Gunn had been set to appear on a panel to discuss the project at San Diego Comic-Con in July, but his appearance was canceled after news broke that Disney had fired Gunn as director of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” due to offensive tweets.

Oliver is the baby of the family. But you wouldn't know it from the way the thirteen-year-old boy smokes, drinks and wisecracks his way through Steve Clark's visually assured sophomore feature "Night Has Settled," which world-premiered this weekend at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.Set in 1983 New York, the indie drama sits somewhere between the films of Larry Clark and the novels of Jonathan Safran Foer on the scale of adolescent coming-of-age ickiness. It's uncomfortable yet tender, droll yet tragic, and often at the same time. In a cramped flat, Oliver (Spencer List) lives with his single mom Luna (Pilar Lopez de Ayala), his older sister (Courtney Baxter) and live-in nanny Aida (Adriana Barraza, Oscar-nominated for playing another nanny in "Babel"). Oliver rolls with a rough crowd of smoking, drinking, oversexed kids well into their teens. His Bohemian artist mother isn't around much and when she is, they share...

Virgil Films acquired the U.S. rights to Foreclosure, a Richard Ledes-directed horror film that stars Michael Imperioli, best known for his work in mob sagas The Sopranos and Goodfellas. This is the third distribution arrangement between Virgil Films and writer-director Ledes, following Fred Won’t Move Out and The Caller, which both starred Elliott Gould. Submarine’s Josh Braun made the deal with Virgil president Joseph Amodei. They’ll put it out VOD early next year. Ged Dickersin is producer and Joseph Infantolino is exec producer. Related: Toronto: Virgil Acquires Bloodworth Thomason’s ‘Bridegroom’ Imperioli plays a man who takes his father-in-law and son to Queens to to the house of a recently deceased relative. Bringing up Bobby gets its DVD release in the UK this week, and it marks the directorial debut of Dutch actress Famke Janssen. The film tells the story of Olive (Milla Jovovich), a Ukranian con artist who moves to Oklahoma with her 10 year old son Bobby (Spencer List) in a bid to escape her murky past.
What Culture caught up with the former James Bond villain – who also wrote and produced the film – to discuss the excitement of helming her first feature, and much more.
It took almost five years to get Bringing up Bobby off the ground, but Janssen ensured that the time was well spent. She explains;
“During that time I really got to think through the script and how I wanted to shoot it, what I wanted to do in terms of casting, location…It gave me a head start in a way that I wouldn’t...

★★★☆☆ Feature films from directors who attempt the crossover from acting can often be terribly hit and miss. It doesn't always follow that because you know how it works in front of the camera, you can automatically transfer the skills to the other side. As a result, Bringing Up Bobby (2011) - the directorial debut of Dutch actress Famke Janssen starring Milla Jovovich - is a refreshing surprise, and far more accomplished than you might expect. Olive (Jovovich) is a small time con-artist from Eastern Europe. In an effort to start anew she has come to America to find a better life for her and her young son Bobby (newcomer Spencer List).
Unfortunately, it's difficult for a leopard to change its spots and Olive's shady past eventually catches up with her, with devastating consequences for her and Bobby. There are several surprising elements to Bringing Up Bobby - such as its competent...

Bereavement
Stars: Alexandra Daddario, Spencer List, Brett Rickaby, Michael Biehn, Kathryn Meisle, John Savage, Chase Pechacek | Written and Directed by Stevan Mena
What makes somebody evil? Is it just in their nature to be that person, to have the ability to harm others without remorse or is it their environment that builds the monster inside. This is the well-known argument of nature vs. nurture and Bereavement is a film that pushes for the belief that its nurture that creates the monster, that the parent is to blame.
Bereavement is actually the prequel to a movie called Malevolence, looking at the tale of Martin Bristol. In Bereavement we see him as a six year old boy with a rare disease; he lacks the ability to feel pain. When he is kidnapped by a serial killer he is taught that torturing and killing is ok because pain is not felt, which of course he understands.

Famke Janssen has played a lot of parts — sexy superhero, love-struck journalist, evil witch — but she's about to add a new line to her resume: Writer/ Director. That's right, the brunette stunner has moved to the other side of the camera for her new film, "Bringing Up Bobby," a project that took her quite some to cobble together ... which just goes to show how hard it really is to get a movie made.
The comedy follows Olive (Milla Jovovich), a con artist who moves her son to a conservative neighborhood in Oklahoma in an effort to build a better future. We won't spoil it for you, but suffice to say that things don't exactly go as planned for our ambitious heroine or her offspring. It isn’t easy to write, direct and produce your first feature, even if you’ve got dozens of acting credits to your name like Famke Janssen. The desire to get behind the lens has always been there, it was just a matter of the stars aligning and in the case of “Bringing Up Bobby,” they did. The film stars Milla Jovovich as Olive, a single mother from the Ukraine trying to raise her son, Bobby (Spencer List), in a conservative Oklahoma town. She’s got the best intentions, but her con artist ways don’t exactly set a good example for Bobby. When her charm wears off and the string of crimes catches [ Read More ]

Six year old Martin Bristol is abducted from his yard by psychopath Graham Sutter, who has a penchant for hanging women in his basement and brutally butchering them. He keeps Martin as a protege of sorts, exposing him to the slaughters and eventually teaching him what it takes to murder. When Allison moves in with her uncle who happens to reside next door to Sutter's slaughterhouse, her curiosity about the creepy neighboring property gets the best of her, resulting in a blood soaked climax.

There are plenty of movies that show what it’s like to be the parent of a missing child. Take movies like Ransom (1996) and Taken (2008), for example. These stories might be so common place now that we’ve become numb to them.
But what about a movie focusing on the kid who has been taken away? Stevan Mena’s Bereavement takes on the concept of growing up under the ever watchful eye of the serial killer captor, Graham Sutter (Bret Rickaby The Crazies 2010).
Martin Bristol (Spencer List Offspring, The Orphan Killer) is just like any other kid, except for the fact that he can’t feel pain. He requires an aid who checks him every hour for cuts, scrapes even broken bones; so when Martin’s mother looks outside to see an empty swing set she doesn’t just worry about his safety, she worries about him staying in one piece.

In 2005 up-and-coming writer/director Stevan Mena set the indie horror world ablaze with his feature film debut, Malevolence, which introduced us to the twisted world of serial killer Martin Bristol, who made a living of capturing and torturing innocent people. For Bereavement, the prequel and second film in the filmmaker's planned trilogy, Mena takes us back to where it all began.
For Martin (Spencer List) that would be the day he was kidnapped by deranged sociopath Graham Sutter (Brett Rickaby) and taken back to Sutter's farm, where the youngster would be groomed over the next five years and molded into a killing machine just like his captor.
Last week Dread Central had the opportunity to talk exclusively with Mena regarding his experiences making Bereavement after assembling a top-notch cast including the aforementioned Rickaby and List as well as Michael Biehn, John Savage and Alexandra Daddario. The writer/director also discussed...

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Stevan Mena, the director, writer, and producer of Bereavement. This is the second film in the Malevolence trilogy, with his previous efforts including Malevolence (2004) and Brutal Massacre: A Comedy (2007).
During our interview, Stevan and I got to chat about the actors in the Bereavement, plans for the third film in the trilogy, and a bit about Mena beyond the limelight.
**Spoiler Warning: This interview discusses elements of Malevolence that would be considered spoilers to those that have not seen the film. **
Acting:
For anyone who has seen Malevolence, you probably expect that Bereavement would follow suit in brutality and anguish. While Bereavement continues to pack the ferocious nature seen in Malevolence, one thing it adds to the mix is character growth.
