Robert Smigel has figured out what disgraced morning anchors Charlie Rose and Matt Lauer are up to: They’re co-hosting a midday talk show in Sarasota, Fla., and making their guests very uncomfortable.
That was one of the many gags on Smigel’s half-hour Fox special “Let’s Be Real,” which featured puppets parodying Rose and Lauer, as well as Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Mike Pence, Rudy Giuliani, Kanye West and Nancy Pelosi. Frightening, faceless mannequins were used to play Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. Puppets were seen interacting with real-life guests including Larry King, Stormy Daniels, Jimmy Kimmel and more. Fox has opted not to proceed with a second season of its freshman multi-cam family comedy Outmatched.
The move, which was fully expected, leaves Prodigal Son as the only Fox series formally on the bubble. That drama, starring Michael Sheen, is getting renewed, contingent on finalizing deals and locking in Sheen’s schedule.
Outmatched, the only new live-action comedy introduced by Fox this season, never quite registered creatively or ratings-wise, but Fox brass love the two leads, Jason Biggs and Maggie Lawson, and may try to get them for other network shows, I hear.
2019-20 TV Cancellations And Renewals For Broadcast, Cable & Streaming
From writer/executive producer Lon Zimmet (La to Vegas), Outmatched harkened back to one of Fox’s signature comedy series, Malcolm In the Middle. It centered on a blue-collar couple in Atlantic City trying to raise four kids – three of whom just happen to be certified geniuses.

Fox has canceled the multi-cam comedy “Outmatched” after one season.
The news comes on the same day the network announced that it had renewed both “Last Man Standing” and “The Resident.” With the cancellation, the only Fox show awaiting word on its fate for next year is the freshman drama “Prodigal Son,” which sources say is likely to return.
“Outmatched” joins fellow canceled freshman Fox series “Deputy” and “Almost Family.” The network previously renewed freshman animated comedies “Bless The Harts” and “Duncanville” and the freshman drama “9-1-1: Lonestar.”

Fox wants you to stay home the day after the Super Bowl. As part of its marketing strategy for the big game, the network has launched a new on-air campaign touting “Super Monday” — a day that everyone should take off and catch up on TV.
The tongue-in-cheek “Super Monday” campaign kicks off with a special promo during the Nfc divisional playoff game between Seattle and Green Bay this Sunday. More “Super Monday” spots will appear on Jan. 19, during Fox’s coverage of the Nfc championship game, during the Super Bowl on Feb. 2, and throughout its “Super Monday” primetime lineup on Feb. 3.
The promos star Finesse Mitchell as “The Mayor of Monday” and Paul Lieberstein as an dour employee, pooh-poohing the idea (a bit eminiscent of his role as Hr rep Toby in “The Office”). In the spots, Mitchell’s “mayor” enthusiastically pitches the idea of taking the day after the Super Bowl off,...

Exclusive: Tony Danza has been set for a guest spot on the Fox sitcom Outmatched, whetting the appetite for an imminent return to starring in a sitcom, his first in a long time. Danza was just set for this and will be at the table reading Monday morning as he separately decides between several offers for his own sitcom vehicle.
Best known for starring in Taxi and Who’s the Boss and last seen in the Netflix series The Good Cop, Danza has gotten close to doing a few sitcoms in recent years. One was a father-son show at NBC built around him and stand-up comedian Sebastian Maniscalco, and another was a male Golden Girls-type sitcom with Danza and John Goodman at ABC.
Jason Biggs leads the cast of Outmatched, and Danza will play his retired bulldozer of a father, up from Florida for a visit. Biggs stars with Maggie Lawson,...

Oprah Winfrey, Ava DuVernay and Norah O’Donnell are among the names from Hollywood and TV news praising what Winfrey called Gayle King’s “calm and steady focus” as singer R. Kelly went ballistic during an interview that aired today on CBS This Morning.
Reaction to Kelly wasn’t so positive.
“Key things we learned from the R. Kelly interview,” tweeted attorney Michael Avenatti, who represents two of Kelly’s alleged victims. “1. R Kelly is a much better singer than he is an actor; 2. He is desperate and distraught because he knows he has been caught. 3. He thinks sexual assault of young girls in the ‘way way past’ cannot be charged. 4. He is guilty.”
Saturday Night Live‘s Chris Redd tweeted that “Aunti @GayleKing lit a fire under Kelz dirty ass,” while attorney and victims rights advocate Lisa Bloom summed up a ubiquitous Twitter reaction: “To show how respectful he is to women,...

File this under the most surprising TV news of the month:
ABC has decided against going forward with the Eden Sher-fronted spinoff of The Middle.
The show was said to be titled "Sue Sue in the City" and would have continued the story of Sue Heck as she finished college and got ready to start her own life in Chicago.
Brock Ciarlelli was also on board to reprise the role of Brad Bottig, Sue's best friend from The Middle. That casting decision made sense because Sue and Brad were such a dynamic duo on the original series.
Chris Diamantopoulos, Kimberley Crossman, Finesse Mitchell, and Aaron Branch were also attached to the offshoot as series regulars.

ABC has opted not to pick up to series its Sue Heck-centered spinoff from hit family comedy The Middle. I hear the project may be shopped by producing studio Warner Bros. TV.
Titled Sue Sue In the City, the single-camera comedy stars The Middle standout Eden Sher as Sue Heck and comes from The Middle creators/executive producers Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline. It was ordered by ABC to pilot in August, with Chris Diamantopoulos cast alongside Sher and fellow Middle alum Brock Ciarlelli as well as Kimberley Crossman, Finesse Mitchell and Aaron Branch.
The spinoff follows the twentysomething adventures of eternal optimist Sue Heck (Sher) as she leaves the small town of Orson to navigate the ups and downs of a career and young adulthood in the big city of Chicago.
