The Amityville Curse seemed to bear a couple of its own curses. It’s an Amityville knockoff and after Amityville Cult, Amityville Thanksgiving, Amityville in the Hood, and so many more, it’s pretty much a guarantee of mediocrity. Secondly, it’s a Tubi Original, which usually carries a very similar guarantee.
But there were a couple of reasons to be hopeful as well. Director Éric Tessier may not be well known outside of Quebec but his adaptions of two of Patrick Senécal’s novels, 5150 Elm’s Way and more importantly, Sur le Seuil aka Evil Words, are both excellent. Dennis Heaton wrote the film, based on the novel by the late Hans Holzer. Heaton you may recall wrote the Billy Connolly zom-com Fido.

“Orange is the New Black’s” Uzo Aduba and Meynon Media’s Dan DeNicola have boarded Marianne Farley’s “Frimas” as executive producers, Variety can reveal.
The live action short, which stars Karine Gonthier-Hyndman (“Patrick Senécal présente”) and Chantal Baril (“White Skin”), tells the story of Kara, who turns to an illegal mobile abortion clinic when she finds herself pregnant in a country where abortion is banned with devastating consequences.
Farley (pictured above right), whose live action short ‘Marguerite’ was nominated for an Academy Award, also wrote the screenplay.
Emmy and SAG-winning Aduba (pictured above left) is best known for her roles in “Orange is the New Black,” “In Treatment” and “Mrs America” alongside Cate Blanchett. “Frimas” marks her debut behind the camera. Earlier this year she launched a production company, Meynon Media, signing a multi-year producing deal with CBS Studios.

5150 Elm’S Way (aka 5150, Rue Des Ormes)
Stars: Marc-André Grondin, Normand D’Amour, Sonia Vachon, Mylène St-Sauveur | Written by Patrick Senécal | Directed by Éric Tessier
Chess is a game of war. It’s a battle of strategies where only one side can win. What happens when chess becomes an obsession, a means to even argue the right to kill all because of a game that must always be won? What will that obsession do to your life? That is the question posed in 5150 Elm’s Way.
Yannick Bérubé is just a nice guy who falls off his bike on the wrong street. Knocking on a door to try getting help he finds himself dragged into a world of kidnap, torture, insanity, murder and above all chess. He is imprisoned by Jacques Beaulieu who prides himself on his unbeaten run as chess champion. Jacques has a secret though, and that is he’s a killer.

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"The Thin Red Line" (1998)
Directed by Terrence Malick
Released by Criterion Collection
No, you won't be getting the hours of deleted Adrien Brody or George Clooney footage from Malick's World War II epic, but this Criterion version is most certainly an upgrade from the previous bare-bones DVD edition with 14 minutes of outtakes, new interviews with Sean Penn and composer Hans Zimmer, among others from the cast and crew, an audio commentary with cinematographer John Toll, production designer Jack Fisk and producer Grant Hill and more.
"7 Days" (2010)
Directed by Daniel Grou
Released by Mpi Home Video
French Canadian horror author Patrick Senécal adapts his own novel to celluloid about a doctor (Claude Legault) who intercepts the man (Remy Girard) who raped and murdered his young daughter and turns the tables on him in a cabin in the woods. The Canadian, French language production “7 Days” (“Les Sept Jours du Talion”) is a film which has been making a stir amongst fans of tough cinema following its well received and much talked about debut at Sundance in 2010. The film was helmed by television director Daniel Grou (who also goes by the odd name of Podz, and who was responsible for episodes of “Vampire High” and “The Hunger”), and was adapted for the screen by author Patrick Senécal from his own novel. Given its high concept torture premise, the film has unsurprisingly drawn comparisons with popular hits such as “Saw” and “Hostel”, as well as, more tellingly, the likes of Lars von Trier’s “Antichrist” and Michael Haneke”s “Funny Games”. Brave viewers can now judge for themselves, as the film arrives on region 2 DVD via E1 Entertainment. The plot doesn’t waste much time in getting down to business, as...

According to Amazon.fr, the Canadian thriller Les 7 jours du talion, an adaptation of Patrick Senécal's acclaimed novel, will be released on DVD in France on September 21.
Here's the description of the synopsis taken from a review I wrote:
Bruno Hamel (Claude Legault) is a surgeon by trade. He happily lives with Sylvie (Fanny Mallette), his wife, and Jasmine (Rose-Marie Coallier), their daughter. During one day, Bruno allows Jasmine to go outside in order to deliver invitation cards for her upcoming ninth birthday. Of course, he'd like to accompany his daughter, but he's too exhausted by his job and neither can Sylvie. However, as times goes by, Jasmine is unaccounted for. In the evening, Jasmine is found dead in the woods after she had been raped.
When Jasmine's killer, Anthony Lemaire (Martin Dubreuil), is arrested and ready to go in court, Bruno has one idea in his mind:...

According to the newspaper La Presse, the horror novel Aliss might come to the big screen. Its director might be none other than Patrick Senécal, the author of the novel.
In fact, Senécal, who is described as Quebec's Stephen King, said it at Val-d'Or during the 34th Book Fair of Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Besides, Cirrus Communications, owns the cinematographic adaptation rights on the novel and no budget has been devoted for Aliss yet.
The novel was originally published in Quebec in 2000. It follows Alice, a 18-year-old girl. She lives with her parents in Brossard, a suburb of Montreal. Obviously, she decides to quit college, live on her own and move to the city where all dreams come true: Montreal. However, after an odd encounter in Montreal's subway, Alice crashes in a neighbourhood that, in actuality, doesn't exist. Besides, the inhabitants of this neighbourhood are extremely bizarre.

5150 Elm's Way is a French language film that was shot in Saint-Hubert, Quebec and now the film is travelling to the sunnier shores of Newport, California. 5150 Elm's Way is a definitive horror film, as the innocent are tortured, dozens of captives are kept in a dank basement, and one man takes insanity, or religious fervor to ecstatic levels. This film will have one showing. Beginning at 2:30pm on Friday April 23, 5150 Elm's Way will be displayed and this film will likely be the shocker of the festival. Canadian filmmakers will show off their penchant for horror cinema and your attendance, or thoughts on the film would be welcomed. A trailer and further details are below.

Die hard fans of Patrick Senécal and movie goers alike will definitely like Les 7 jours du talion . Indeed, this is by far the best adaptation of a work from Canada's own Stephen King. However, if you have a weak stomach, avoid this film at all cost because of its very graphic scenes of violence.

Last summer, a fun little revenge thriller called Law Abiding Citizen was released into theaters. As dumb as it was, it was hard to resist the sweet siren song of a story about an ex-military engineer who uses ingenious booby traps to outwit bumbling lawyers and feckless civil servants. It was fun to revel in some harmless, impotent stick-it-to-the-man fantasy. I ate popcorn.
I did not eat popcorn during 7 Days.
7 Days is the polar opposite of films like Law Abiding Citizen, that gloss over human suffering in favor of the mystery and thrills of revenge. In fact, it's about as dire and as brutally violent as a film can get. It's a tragic story about a man descending into soul-shattering misery after his daughter is violently raped and murdered. A man so desperate to relieve his own guilt,...

Don't miscontrue my words: I'm a total fan of Patrick Senécal's novels and I own all of them. However, the mention of Éric Tessier, the director who slaughtered Sur le seuil, in the credit left me icy. Honestly, 5150, Rue des Ormes sure has its strong moments, but it remains an entertaining film at most.

Your 8-year old daughter is kidnapped, raped and murdered. Her body is left out in the open, exposed to the elements to be found by whoever happens upon her. As a parent, what do you do? How do you cope? What form of justice seems fair in a world where something so terrible can occur? If these questions sound shocking and extreme, its because 7 Days deals with shocking and extreme subject matter.
Daniel Grou tackles these questions in 7 Days, or Les 7 jours du talion, his feature film directorial debut, adapted from and written by novelist Patrick Senécal. This French-Canadian production is a disturbing and poetically accomplished film of revenge and regret. 7 Days is at times terribly difficult to watch, but at other times is mesmerizing with its quiet, contemplative approach. The audience is taken inside the mind of a father who has tragically lost his 8-year old daughter in the most horrible way imaginable.

7 Days (Les 7 Jours du talion) Directed by: Daniel Grou Written by: Patrick Senécal Starring: Rémy Girard, Claude Legault I hadn’t read much about 7 Days before adding it to the list of films I wanted to watch at this year’s Sundance and, to be honest, I had completely forgotten what it was about as I made my way to the theatre to see it. A guy I was talking to earlier in the day had said it was one of the most offensive films he’d ever seen so I had an idea it would be a little controversial at the least. 7 Days follows surgeon Bruno Hamel as the murder of his 8-year old daughter manifests in him kidnapping the prime suspect and then embarking on a week-long period of torture as revenge. The film opens at the crime scene of Jasmine Hamel’s rape and murder and her...

There's an epidemic going around during past couple of months. People are killing young women-in the movies. In Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bones," 14-year-old Susie Salmon played by Saoirse Ronan is raped and murdered near her home. The dead girl is intent on killing the murderer, whose death would release her from the clouds and gain her entrance to heaven. In Pierre Morel's "Taken," Bryan Mills, played by Liam Neeson, suffers the murder of his daughter. His response? "I know who you are. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not lok for you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you." Martin Campbell's "Edge of Darkness" finds Thomas Craven in pursuit of the shotgun slaying of his 24-year-old daughter. Forget the law. Justice is too slow. These survivors want revenge.

I don't think I expected to like 5150 Elm's Way all that much, so it came as a very welcome surprise that it is in fact, an incredibly well directed and acted thriller that blew me away. The story is deceptively simple: Film student Yannick is making a documentary about his new neighbourhood when a black cat causes him to crash his bike. Knocking on the door of local taxi driver Jacques, he wanders into the house at 5150 Elm's Way, a place you really don't want to go snooping about. It seems that the fanatical Christian and part-time vigilante Jacques was in the middle of teaching the local drug dealer a lesson when Yannick interrupted them, and now Yannick faces kidnapping in order to protect Jacques' secret hobby. As Jacques and his family try to continue a normal routine,...

There's no point in denying it: as he advances in his career, Patrick Senécal, a novelist who is often compared to Stephen King, masters more and more his style. In fact, one can look back on Senécal's brilliant career and daresay that his previous novels were a warm up.
Daniel Saul is the CEO of a real estate company and one of the wealthiest businessmen in North America. He's in his early forties, beautiful, tough and intelligent. Besides, Daniel is ruthless against people he regards as "losers" and his competitors. One day, Martin Charron, a freelance investor and former schoolmate, proposes him to become a member of Hell.com, a secret and criminal website that allows its members to do everything they wish in real life. Obviously, Daniel feels that he can't refuse Martin's offer because he considers himself as one of the world's most powerful people. However, as Daniel's...

Yesterday, a few months after the release of the trailer, Alliance Vivafilm publicly released the official poster for the thriller Les sept jours du talion (official English title: 7 Days), which will be released on February 5, 2010. For those who don't know, this film is adapted from an excellent novel by Patrick Senécal and stars Claude Legault, Martin Dubreuil and Rémy Girard in the leading roles. The following is a description of the story and the trailer.
The story:
Bruno Hamel (Claude Legault) is a surgeon who succeeded in life and lives in Drummondville, Quebec. He happily lives with Sylvie (Fanny Mallette), his wife, and Jasmine, their daughter. However, after Bruno let his daughter go play outside, Jasmine is found dead (and raped). When Jasmine's killer (Martin Dubreuil) is arrested and ready to go in court, Bruno has one idea in his mind: he wants to take the chance to kidnap the "monster". Besides,...

Looking mighty fine. I do love me some torturous revenge thrillers.
The screenplay for 7 Days was written by Patrick Senécal, based on his novel Les sept jours du talion. The movie stars Claude Legault, Martin Dubreuil, Fanny Mallette, Rémy Girard, Pascale Delhaes, and Rose-Marie Coallier.
Bruno Hamel (Claude Legault) is a thirty-eight-year-old surgeon. He lives in Drummondville with his wife Sylvie (Fanny Mallette) and their eight-year-old daughter Jasmine (Rose-Marie Coallier). Like many happy people, he leads an uneventful life, until a beautiful fall afternoon when his daughter is raped and murdered. >From then on, the world of the Hamel family collapses. When the murderer is arrested, a terrible project germinates in Bruno's darkened mind. He plans to capture the 'monster' (Martin Dubreuil) and make him pay for his crime. The day the murderer appears in court, Bruno - who had prepared his plan in great detail - kidnaps the monster.

On February 5, 2010 (this is what I know for now), the film Les sept jours du talion (which means "The Seven Days of the Lex Talionis" in French) will be released in Quebec. By the way, the film is adapted from a novel of Patrick Senécal, a novelist who is often compared to Stephen King.
