Mother Play is the final show of the 2023-2024 Broadway season and its officially open!
The new play, starring Jessica Lange, celebrated its opening night performance on Thursday (April 25) at the Hayes Theater in New York City.
The legendary actress was joined on the red carpet by co-stars Jim Parsons and Celia Keenan-Bolger.
Mother Play opened right before the close of the Tony Awards eligibility period and it seems like Jessica is a lock for a nomination based on the reviews.
“Keenan-Bolger and Parsons are very good indeed in Mother Play, but there’s no question to whom it belongs. Lange is magnificent, especially in this production’s most moving scene,” Time Out New York wrote.
Mother Play, written by Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel, is billed as “a bitingly funny and unflinchingly honest new play about the hold our family has over us and the surprises we find when we unpack the past.

Forbidden Broadway on Broadway, the updated iteration of the long-running Off Broadway musical-comedy review, is postponing its scheduled summer Broadway debut at the Hayes Theatre due to what producers say is an “enormously crowded” landscape.
“We made the difficult decision today to postpone the upcoming Broadway production of Forbidden Broadway on Broadway: Merrily We Stole A Song,” said producers Ryan Bogner, Victoria Lang and Tracey McFarland in a statement. “The Broadway landscape is enormously crowded at this moment, and while we adore Forbidden Broadway, we are disappointed that the show will not open at the Hayes on Broadway this summer. New programming for the Hayes Theater this summer will be announced soon.”
The Hayes currently is home to the Second Stage Theater production of Paula Vogel’s Mother Play starring Jessica Lange, Jim Parsons and Celia Keenan-Bolger. That production opened to excellent reviews last night. When Mother Play was announced,...

Young Sheldon had a good run. The CBS sitcom and The Big Bang Theory prequel starring Iain Armitage, Annie Potts, and co. is now wrapping with its seventh and final season. Undoubtedly, it is much heavier on the cast to say goodbye to the show that was started about seven years ago, focusing on the younger version of Sheldon Cooper.
The cast of Young Sheldon in season 5
For Potts, it is far too hard to wrap up the show as the actor revealed that she was devastated by the news of the show ending with the seventh season. Potts first appeared in the third episode of the first season of the show playing Sheldon and his siblings’ MeeMaw, Connie Tucker, and she has been a regular till the end.

Jessica Lange spoke critically of present-day Hollywood during a recent interview with Vulture, saying “there should be a law against it” when the topic came up about Warner Bros. Discovery axing already-shot movies like “Batgirl” and “Coyote vs. Acme” for tax write-off purposes. This topic became a launching pad for some of Lange’s wider criticisms of today’s entertainment industry.
“We’re living in a corporate world and it certainly has rolled over into the film industry,” Lange said. “So much of the industry now is not about the creative process. Obviously, this is not across the board, but there are many instances where I feel like the artistic impulse is overwhelmed by the corporate profit motive. You look at some of the best films of the past year — what do they have in common? They’re not from America. My favorite was ‘Anatomy of a Fall.’ How often...

Welcome to Tony Talk, a weekly column in which Gold Derby contributing theater editors Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan discuss the Tony Awards race. With less than a week to go before nominations for the 77th Tonys are announced, we discuss the recently-opened and raved-about new play “Stereophonic” and consider how many of its performers might earn nominations in those challenging Featured Actor and Actress races.
David Buchanan: Hey Sam! We are officially less than a week away from the Tony nominations, and now that we have a tiny bit more clarity on the Best Musical race as shows like “Suffs” and “Hell’s Kitchen” have opened, I’m starting to really fret those pesky featured performer categories. A lot of shows this season are large ensemble pieces; last week, for example, saw the opening of the terrific play “Stereophonic,” which has an impeccable seven member ensemble. But I don...

The coming-of-age TV series, set in the late ’80s to early ’90s, is a spin-off prequel series based on the equally huge show, The Big Bang Theory.
The show is centered around Sheldon Cooper, portrayed by Jim Parsons in Big Bang Theory, growing up with his family in East Texas.
The TV series first debuted back in 2017, and was picked up for a full season that began airing weekly in November of that year. Sadly, the show is coming to an end, and the seventh and final season kicked off in February. Find out who’s back on the show!

Annie Potts is no stranger to series finales, having experienced several through the years. But there’s something different about the end of “Young Sheldon,” the “Big Bang Theory” prequel that concludes on May 16. “I still don’t understand why they canceled it,” she says. “It just seemed like such a stupid business move.”
Potts, who plays saucy Connie “MeeMaw” Tucker on “Young Sheldon,” says she remains puzzled by CBS’s decision to end the series — even though it’s still a strong ratings performer for the network.
Nonetheless, “Young Sheldon” did wrap production on its seventh and final season last week. A few days later, Variety talked with Potts, and co-star Iain Armitage (the socially awkward 14-year-old genius Sheldon Cooper), about how they’re feeling about the show’s end. The duo also shared their reaction to Jim Parsons’ return as the adult Sheldon in the finale episode and previewed this week’s episode,...

Nominations for the 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced on Tuesday, April 23. The stars of the hit Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe, read off the nominees live from the Museum of Broadway.
Off-Broadway productions ultimately out-paced Broadway with this critics group. The new David Yazbek musical “Dead Outlaw” led the pack with nine nominations. It was followed by “The Connector,” another Off-Broadway musical, and “Stereophonic,” a lauded Broadway play, with seven nominations each.
While there are no Tony nominators in the Outer Critics Circle membership, these nominations can provide some clues as to how theater aficionados are thinking about this season’s Tony race. Of the five productions cited for Best New Broadway Musical, only “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Suffs” made the cut in the all-important Best Score category. They were joined by two Off-Broadway entries, as well as...

CBS is ending three of its longest-running series next month, and the network has officially confirmed the series finale dates.
Bob Hearts Abishola is kicking things off with the series finale of the Billy Gardell comedy set for Monday, May 6, at 8:30/7:30c.
The series has been on the chopping block for some time.
Alarm bells sounded for fans last season when CBS confirmed that only Gardell and Folake Olowofoyeku would return as series regulars.
At that point, the fifth season wasn’t revealed to be the concluding chapter of the series, but the news followed months later.
The show has done an admirable job of trying to keep many of the ousted series regulars in play as guest stars and recurring players.

The show has done an admirable job of trying to keep many of the ousted series regulars in play as guest stars and recurring players.

The Tony Award nominations are set to take place April 30, and in the lead-up, the month is jam-packed with Broadway openings, with 14 taking place over the course of 11 days.
While the days before the Tony Awards eligibility cutoff, on April 25, are typically filled with openings, many industry insiders are optimistic that this year’s rush spells somewhat of a return to normalcy. But with the influx of shows and changing audience makeup, producers are also anxious about making sure their shows stand out to ticket-buyers and can make it to the Tony Awards ceremony on June 16 and beyond.
“It largely feels very exciting. For the first time in a while, it really feels like we are back to pre-pandemic levels of volume,” says Greg Nobile, producer of several shows on Broadway this season, including the new musicals Lempicka and Illinoise and the play revival of An Enemy of the People.

Emily Osment had her reservations about scene partner Montana Jordan when she first stepped foot on the set of Young Sheldon midway through Season 5.
“I think I asked like five different people if you were over 18 because you looked so young,” Osment tells Jordan in the video above. “I think I was 29 or 30 at the time… and that was new for me. I mean, usually, it goes the other way. Usually, I’m like, how old is this guy? So, it was refreshing.”

It's the end of an era.
Young Sheldon Season 7 wraps up the family-oriented prequel to The Big Bang Theory, leaving a hole in CBS' schedule that will be hard to fill.
The news that the series was ending has been heartbreaking for many reasons. Young Sheldon features sharp, snarky characters, satirizes small-town life, and offers a nostalgic look back at life in the early 1990s.
Young Sheldon is one of the last family sitcoms.
These types of shows were popular during the period that the series is set in; during the late 1980s and early '90s, there were a ton of comedies featuring families with kids, such as Family Ties, Growing Pains, the original version of The Wonder Years, The Hogan Family, and many others.

Revolving around Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar, so much happened onscreen, but it turns out that just as much was going on when fans weren’t watching.
We did some digging and rustled up 12 facts about the show, including details about guest stars who turned down roles (that list includes a massive pop star), actors who were almost overlooked, onset romances, future plans for reboots and more.

Jim Parsons is opening up about what it was like reprising his Big Bang Theory role for the series finale of Young Sheldon.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actor, who already filmed his scenes, said it was beautiful going back to his beloved character, Sheldon Cooper, which he played for 12 seasons on the hit sitcom.
“It was even more beautiful than I expected it to be,” Parsons said. “One of the reasons I was excited to do it is because what they wrote is so sweet and I think they worked Mayim [Bialik] and I into that show so beautifully. I hope everyone agrees.”
He continued, “But also for us the way that they tape — because they’re a single-camera show and we’re multicamera — the whole look of the show was a really special experience. To get to go with Mayim, in a world we’re really...
