When Nicole Kidman was honored with the AFI Life Achievement Award, she spent a large portion of her speech thanking the directors whom she’s worked with throughout the years. The respect for the job, though, doesn’t she mean has any desire to step behind the camera herself.
“I feel like I would be a terrible director because I always have so many ideas. A director has to make choices, and that’s not my strong suit,” Kidman told The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday night on the AFI red carpet, noting that a producer’s duties much more align with her interests. “I’m very good at being passionate and supporting the voices and reading a script and going ‘I love this script,’ or seeing somebody and going, ‘I love this actor, I love this director, how do I support them?’ And they maybe have done nothing [before], but I want to get behind them.

Nicole Kidman was honored with the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award on Saturday night, as an A-list group of her friends and collaborators looked back on her long Hollywood career.
Reese Witherspoon, Morgan Freeman, Naomi Watts, Zoe Saldaña, Aaron Sorkin, Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Joey King, Mike Myers and husband Keith Urban all took the Dolby Theatre stage throughout the event to pay tribute to Kidman. To close out the evening, Meryl Streep presented her with the award.
Streep — joking after a clip was shown, “did anyone notice that [costume designer] Ann Roth gave her my nose in The Hours? You’re welcome” — took the time to reflect on working opposite Kidman in season two of Big Little Lies.
“For me, the very, very hardest part of being incessantly called the greatest actress of my generation,” Streep teased as the audience roared, throwing her hand theatrically over her head, “What is the hardest part?...

A few years ago, filmmakers Emma Schwartz and Mary Robertson remember taking note of video compilations from old Dan Schneider series that showed children and young teens “enacting scenes that are arguably sexual in nature.”
“One example you see Ariana Grande squeezing a potato, or Ariana Grande — who was then a young teenager — pouring water on her chest and face,” Robertson recalls during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted event. “And you see Jamie Lynn Spears receiving this squirt of a viscous liquid on her face. And there were many on social media who were asking, ‘Did I grow up watching these clips?’ “
Their shock over what they found on social media, together with a story about ’90s kids TV in Business Insider, is what prompted the creation of Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. The Investigation Discovery docuseries set out to uncover the...

After winning the Emmy earlier this year for the final season of Trevor Noah’s hosting stint, The Daily Show surprised just about everyone with the announcement that its multiple Emmy-winning previous star Jon Stewart would be returning to host Monday editions during this election year, while other regulars would take turns hosting during the rest of the week.
The multi-host format was born out of necessity following Noah’s departure and a series of what were essentially auditions for a permanent replacement. Unable to land on the perfect choice, producers and Comedy Central settled on Stewart returning and spreading the wealth host-wise to carry the series through this election year.
Ratings are up. It’s working.
Discussing the evolution at Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted event were longtime executive producer/showrunner/writer Jen Flanz, co-executive producer/writer Zhubin Parang, and former writer and newly named correspondent Josh Johnson.

Casting for Netflix’s reality competition series Squid Game: The Challenge was a unique challenge: finding 456 diverse and international lead characters.
Casting director Erika Dobrin described the gargantuan task by saying, “I don’t think that’s ever quite been done before on the scale it was done here.”
The Netflix series, based on the streaming’s mega-hit Korean survival drama Squid Game, saw 456 contestants compete for a massive $4.56 million prize through a series of challenges. These ranged from the infamous “Red Light Green Light” from the 2021 drama, in which contestants had to avoid moving while in the eyeline of a horrifying giant doll, to new ones based on children’s games such as Battleship.

Can you tell who has a “good” voice and who has a “bad” voice just by looking someone in the face who is lip-syncing to a song? This is the question posed to participants weekly on the Fox game show I Can See Your Voice, hosted and created by Ken Jeong.
“The whole show is predicated on, is this a ‘good’ singer or a ‘bad’ singer without ever hearing them actually hearing them sing,” Jeong tells Deadline during a panel at its Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted awards-season event. “We use visual clues, lip-sync clues, and like detective kind of clues. At the end of the day, the contestant has an opportunity to win life-changing money by determining if the final secret voice is good or bad. And if it is good, then they can win up to $100,000. It’s really just feel-good television at its best.”

Before Jojo Siwa decided to join Season 2 of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test on Fox, the pop star considered herself a “very sheltered” celebrity whose small-screen career involved dancing, not jumping out of helicopters or rappelling down mountains.

National Geographic’s Queens isn’t your typical nature documentary series.
From the first episode, it flips the script on what one might expect out, instead diving deep into the love, loss and resilience of the matriarchal societies in the animal kingdom. And it all started with that very first story of both lionesses and hyenas detailed in the “African Queens” episode.
“The executive at NatGeo said, ‘We should do this as a whole series,’ ” executive producer Vanessa Berlowitz explained during Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted panel. “We kind of looked at each other and went, ‘Surely it’s been done.’ And it hasn’t. So it was just one of those great conversations between two female senior leaders, realizing this was a huge content area that was fresh and exciting.”

It’s been over 40 years since the pioneering hip hop group Run-dmc formed in Hollis, Queens, but Darryl “Dmc” McDaniels insists, “I remember everything like it was yesterday.”
He appeared at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary & Unscripted virtual event to discuss the Peacock docuseries Kings from Queens: The Run Dmc Story, which chronicles the group’s incredible achievements and influence. Along with McDaniels, Run-dmc was comprised of Joseph “Run” Simmons and the late Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell.

The success of the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building has exposed a new generation of viewers to the comedic brilliance and appeal of Steve Martin. But the actor-writer has been appearing onscreen since the late 1960s – and performing even before that, to smaller audiences, as a kid magician at the newly opened Disneyland.
His journey from shy, showbiz-obsessed youth in Southern California to stand-up sensation and (probably still shy) comedy legend is told in Steve! (Martin): A Documentary in 2 Pieces, directed by Oscar winner Morgan Neville.
“For years, people had asked Steve about doing a documentary. When filmmakers Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss first spoke with friends about the focus of their Apple TV+ documentary Girls State — a companion piece to their Emmy- and Sundance-winning 2020 documentary Boys State — they were surprised to hear about the expectations it conjured in their minds.
Following 500 teenage girls from Missouri as they navigate a weeklong immersion in a sophisticated democratic laboratory where they build a government from the ground up to address the most contentious issues of the day, the film would surely come down, the friends predicted, to mean girls looking, in Moss’ words, “to tear each other apart.”
In reality, in spite of the political polarization that defines the U.S. today, the situation at Missouri Girls State was altogether different.

Tyler Perry has achieved success in the entertainment industry on a scale almost beyond comparison: he’s the creative force behind two dozen films, 20 plays, two bestselling books and well over a dozen television series. Tyler Perry Studios, the huge production complex he built in Atlanta, is home to 12 custom sound stages.
What’s even more astounding is all he had to overcome to accomplish those feats – growing up poor in New Orleans and enduring physical and mental abuse at the hands of his father. Ron Howard’s Cannes-bound documentary Jim Henson Idea Man reveals a man of inexhaustible creativity – a puppeteer, filmmaker, artist, performer and inventor. The Muppets were just one part of Jim Henson’s astonishing body of work.
“I had met him briefly. I knew people who knew him very well, who held him in such high esteem. He was a very modest guy,” Howard noted during an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted event. “But at an immediate first glance, I still didn’t realize the scope of what he had accomplished in his 53 short years — far too short. But I didn’t know where this kind of outlier mentality came from, combined with this extraordinary amount of work.

“It really wasn’t until we got into filming and saw the reality of the situation that we were aware that there was something deeper and, ultimately, disturbing, going on in Wendy’s life,” executive producer Mark Ford said during the series’ panel at Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted event.

The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard became a massive hit for Lifetime from the moment the first episode of the docuseries debuted in January.
“It definitely surpassed even our wildest expectations,” executive producer Nicole Vogel said during a panel discussion of the series as part of Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted event. “It’s been our number one most downloaded property ever across all of A&e networks. It’s been the highest social-performing property and buzz for us across A&e networks. So, it really has been a hit.”
Vogel said Lifetime expected big things when they green lighted the series. They had every reason to be confident because Blanchard’s shocking story has captivated the nation since it first came to light almost a decade ago. We Were the Lucky Ones — “Siberia” – Episode 103 — Genek and Herta are sent on a grueling train ride. Addy escapes Europe by sea. Halina starts a new job in Soviet-Occupied Lvov. Halina (Joey King), shown. (Photo by: Vlad Cioplea/Hulu) Antisemitism is a disturbing reality, a persistent echo of some of history’s darkest moments. Hulu’s We Were the Lucky Ones brings the weight of the Holocaust to the screen, focusing on a fictional Jewish family. Their story, though imagined, draws power from the all-too-real experiences of those who survived. For star Joey King, the series has profound meaning. She believes it’s vital for her generation to connect with the past, to understand the suffering it holds – a path towards building a more empathetic world in the face of today’s hatred. When is We Were the Lucky Ones Episode 8 coming on Hulu? If you are waiting for the next episode of the series you have come to the right place.
Hulu has an excellent Holocaust drama ‘We Were the Lucky Ones’ which is based on Georgia Hunter’s bestselling of the same name – the plot is incredibly expansive.
When we say ‘expansive’, we mean there are a Ton of characters. Similarly, the limited series also covers a heavy terrain in Poland, where the Kurc family is based.
We’re breaking it down episode after episode – because each one is a masterpiece.
Synopsis of the series
The limited series has an incredible cast, we know that. This genre cast can bring the series to life, as it follows the tight-knit members of the Kurc family as they struggle with their lives after the Nazi invasion in Poland perpetually alters it – and the subsequent emergence of WWII.

When Wattpad Webtoon Studios was preparing to release the drama “Float” this year, author Kate Marchant asked for a little help from her fans. The Lionsgate film was based on her story, and now she presented three movie posters to her followers, asking them to pick their favorite.
“I can feel your readers shifting in their seats,” Aron Levitz, president of Wattpad Webtoon Studios, says with a laugh. “All those creative execs are going, ‘Wait a minute, people knew about it before it went out? Are you sure that’s Ok?’”
For Levitz, the answer is a resounding yes. His company is shaking up the traditional approach to creating film and TV adaptations by putting the power in the hands of fans.
Just last month, the third movie in the “Through My Window” series, adapted from Wattpad author Ariana Godoy’s webnovels, dominated the Netflix film charts, amassing 14 million views...

Awkwafina rose to fame with her idiosyncratic, trademark comedic stylings. Then she wowed us all with her against-type performance in Lulu Wang‘s “The Farewell,” which very nearly earned her an Oscar nomination back in 2019. She delivers another quiet, subdued role in the Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady,” which could well reap her a career-first Emmy bid for acting.
Awkwafina plays the reserved Anne, who must compete on the game show she is obsessed with alongside her loud, abrasive, estranged sister Jenny (Sandra Oh) in order to pay off their mom’s gambling debts. The result is a heartwarming comedy that is one of the sweet treats of the year. Critics loved the movie and singled out Awkafina for particular praise.
Tania Hussain (Collider) exclaimed: “While Awkwafina has shown audiences a whacky, often one-dimensional side in some of her roles like the sitcom ‘Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens,’ she is able...

Vice President Kamala Harris’ appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” has been postponed.
The VP will no longer appear on the late night show on Tuesday, April 16, and the appearance is set to be rescheduled to a later date, according to an individual with knowledge of the decision.
No reason was given for the postponement, and ABC did not provide a comment. According to a report from Deadline, who first reported the news, Harris’ appearance was postponed after her trip to Los Angeles was cut short ahead of her travels back to Washington, D.C.
The news comes just days after Harris was announced to join Kimmel from his Los Angeles stage. The last time the VP appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” was in March 2019, when Harris was campaigning for president.
In 2022, Harris made her first late night appearance as VP on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and appeared on “The...

We Were the Lucky Ones is a harrowing tale based on a true story about a Jewish family who is trying to find their way back to one another after being separated during the Holocaust.
Because the series follows one family, it has a more “intimate lens” into the Holocaust, giving showrunner Erica Lipez an opportunity to depict a story of that period in history “that people haven’t seen before” — including fewer depictions of violence.

CinemaCon attendees got an extended clip from Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 at Universal’s presentation Wednesday in Las Vegas.
In it, Gru (Steve Carell) teams with the villainess Poppy (Joey King) to steal a honey badger from a castle/private school. Two Minions and Gru’s baby son Junior are in tow. Calamity ensues as the honey badger awakes and creates havoc, with Gru getting hit in the butt with a tranquilizer shot.
Illumination Boss Chris Meledandri introduced the clip today at the Caesars Colosseum, thanking exhibitors for the sleeper success of his animation studio’s Migration ($293 million in box office).
“In case of any doubt, our commitment to produce original animation film remains steadfast,” said Meledandri.

‘Despicable Me 4’ CinemaCon Footage: Gru Pulls Off ‘Mission: Impossible’ Heist Armed With Diaper Bag
Gru, the recovering supervillain turned huggable and lovable dad, is back in action.
Universal premiered a new sequence from “Despicable Me 4,” the latest installment in the studio and its partner Illumination’s long-running animated franchise, at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Wednesday. It featured an aspiring villainess (Joey King) as well as a new addition to the Gru family — Gru Jr., who bears a strong resemblance to his beak-nosed namesake — as they attempted a “Mission: Impossible” style heist of a heavily fortified castle. The only problem is Gru’s assistants, the Minions, brought the wrong equipment. Instead of his gear and gadgets, he is armed with only a diaper bag. That means Gru is left to deal with lasers, guards and a vicious honey badger with only diaper rash cream, baby bottles and a pacifier to protect him. It doesn’t help that Gru Jr. keeps crawling around, inadvertently setting off booby traps.

As of Episode 4, “We Were the Lucky Ones” is still in the midst of the Nazi domination of Europe. But the Hulu limited series has already displayed a preference for swerving away from the expected tropes of the period. It’s telling a World War II saga that features no battlefields and a chronicle of Jewish resistance that is more about forging and smuggling than about killing Nazis.
“We Were the Lucky Ones” is all the better for showing the audience new kinds of hardships and new avenues for survival, too. It shines when dramatic moments feel specific to the Kurcs, the Polish Jewish family the show follows as the war scatters them across Europe and even further afield, as opposed to the kinds of war imagery that, given the number of WWII dramas each year, can appear standard issue.

Growing up in Israel meant that “We Were the Lucky Ones” actor Amit Rahav was taught about the Holocaust at any early age. His childhood in Tel Aviv included a school trip to concentration camps in Poland. “It’s mandatory in the curriculum,” Rahav tells Variety.
Then there were the stories at home.
“My grandma, who is the greatest and I love her so much, she is a Holocaust survivor,” says Rahav, best known for his breakout performance as Yanky Shapiro in Netflix’s 2021 series “Unorthodox.” “So the topic of the Holocaust was surrounding me and my family since I can remember.”
Based on Georgia Hunter’s bestselling book about her own family’s experience, “We Were the Lucky Ones” tells the story of her grandfather Addy (Logan Lerman) and his siblings’ fight to survive the Holocaust and reunite. Rahav plays her grandfather’s lawyer-turned-photographer brother, Jakob. Joey King stars as their sister Halina.

Director Thomas Kail says that if you were to boil the arc of “We Were the Lucky Ones” down to its essence, then the Hulu limited series is about a large family who has dinner together and then tries to make sure they have dinner together again. Which is no mean feat for any family of 12; it’s an even more impossible ask when it’s a family of Polish Jews during World War II trying to stay one step ahead of the Germans and/or hiding their Jewishness from anti-semites on all sides.
Kail, showrunner Erica Lipez, and the rest of the “We Were the Lucky Ones’” creative team had a number of choices for how to handle the Kurc family story. It could’ve easily followed just Halina (Joey King), the youngest daughter who finds herself drawn into the resistance, or Addy (Logan Lerman), who can only worry...
