Colman Domingo received his first Oscar nomination on Tuesday morning for Rustin, in the Best Actor for a Leading Role category. Anyone would be thrilled with a nomination, but Domingo says being recognized for this film in particular is special. “It’s very important for me, especially after a film like Rustin, that [Bayard Rustin] is pulled out of the shadows of history, and he’s taken his rightful place in the center of his own story.”
Rustin tells the story of Bayard Rustin, a key figure of the civil rights movement and architect of the 1963 March on Washington, whose story was marginalized in history because he was openly gay. “It took people like Barack and Michelle Obama, and their production company, to say that this story is necessary and vital and potent,” he says.

Colman Domingo shared this week what former President Barack Obama told him about his Rustin character’s influence on modern-day politics.
“President Barack Obama told me backstage when we were in D.C., ‘You know Colman, there would be no Barack Obama if there was no Bayard Rustin,'” Domingo recalled during an appearance on Today‘s Sunday Sitdown with Willie Geist.
Rustin, produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, tells the story of civil rights organizer and activist Bayard Rustin, who planned the 1963 March on Washington where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech.
President Obama posthumously awarded Rustin the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. The film, released on Netflix in November 2023, takes place during the weeks leading up to the historic march and explores Rustin’s identity as a gay Black man.

Is the male peacock trend over? The prevailing menswear trend at the 2024 Golden Globes was that most guys seemed to have left their ties behind at home or in the Uber — a perilous decision that in some cases created a look that felt a bit too nonchalant for the evening.
But the women more than made up for the men’s collective relaxed attitude with their glamorous looks, from the shimmer of Taylor Swift’s lime-green Gucci sequined gown to the flurry of roses on Jennifer Lopez’s romantic pink wrap with matching gown. And speaking of pink, Margot Robbie is in no hurry to abandon Barbie‘s favorite color, instead working with a legendary couturier on her Golden Globes look.

Bayard Rustin is one of the most important figures in modern American history whom many people knew nothing about — until now. Netflix’s Rustin, and its towering central performance from Emmy-winning actor Colman Domingo, serves to add his story back into the history books, particularly Rustin’s mentorship of Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and his role as the architect of the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech.
The reason Rustin is absent from mainstream history is made all too clear in the biopic, directed by George C. Wolfe: He was openly gay and was forced to the sidelines because his sexuality was considered too taboo for public leadership — and was also seen as a threat to King’s image as other Civil Rights leaders worked to gain equality for Black Americans.

Lenny Kravitz’s family had been involved in the Civil Rights Movement, so it was only fitting he should lend his musical talent to George C. Wolfe’s new biopic about the activist leader Bayard Rustin, who played a key role in planning the 1963 March on Washington.
Except, Kravitz had never heard of the Civil Rights figure. “I was disturbed that I did not know about Bayard Rustin,” the rock musician tells Variety. While Martin Luther King Jr.’s story was, of course, taught to him in school, Rustin’s was not. So, when producer Bruce Cohen approached him to write the end song for the Colman Domingo-starring “Rustin,” Kravitz dropped everything to learn about the story. “I knew immediately that this was something that I needed to do,” he says.
The assignment, in Kravitz’s words, was “due yesterday,” as Wolfe wanted the song right away. But Kravitz explains,...

Past Lives took the top prize at the 2023 Gotham Awards on Monday night, with the film that went into the night up for three awards winning best feature.
Fellow three-time and best feature nominee A Thousand and One picked up the breakthrough director award, in the all-female category, as helmer A.V. Rockwell gave an emotional speech about the challenges of telling authentic stories about certain identities.
“Maybe one of the biggest things actually was telling a very truthful, authentic, very raw experience that can be so hard when it’s culturally specific and I felt like I fought tooth and nail for every inch of, every piece of what you’ve seen on screen,” Rockwell said, tearing up. “Just to be frank, it is very hard to tell a very culturally specific story when you look like this,” she added, touching the skin on the back of her hand.

George C. Wolfe’s 2023 film, Rustin is a biographical drama based on America’s most unsung hero, Bayard Rustin, who was a pivotal figure in the civil rights movement. Along with A. Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin was key individuals behind the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, igniting the revolution against discrimination based on race, sex, color, and religion. The film masterfully recreated some of the iconic historical moments and even used the famous quotes of these key figures, but it also took some creative liberties for dramatic purposes as well as to showcase the struggles in Bayard Rustin’s life. The makers took some creative liberties in depicting Rustin’s love life by creating two of the most pivotal characters in the storyline. One of them was a young student who fell in love with Rustin and lived with him during the time when he was planning a march,...

The 1963 March on Washington did not merely come together on its own via a whim, a wish, and good will. It took years of strategizing, planning, building coalitions, dodging bureaucratic obstacles and opponents both within and outside the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement. Students and veteran activists worked phone lines, sweated over the details (how many latrines do we need? how many can we get?), and sought out allies of all stripes from across the country. What happened on that hot day in the District of Columbia on August 28th was...

March on Washington organizer Bayard Rustin, a Black and gay civil rights advocate who died in 1987 after decades of fighting for peace, nonviolence, and racial equality in the workplace, gets a rousing spotlight in playwright-turned-filmmaker George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin.” The Netflix drama, in theaters now and streaming on the platform November 17, stars Colman Domingo in the title role, and it’s one of this year’s awards contenders to watch. Barack and Michelle Obama back the film through their Higher Ground productions, making an appearance this past weekend to support the biopic. Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black co-write the screenplay, which centers on Rustin’s 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

Former President Barack Obama made mention of the end of Hollywood’s labor strife at a special screening on Friday of Rustin, the Netflix biopic of civil rights Bayard Rustin made by he and former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Prioductions.
Introducing the movie at the Hbcu First Look Film Festival, Obama said, “It’s great to see even more of you since the strikes are over,” a reference to the restrictions on writers and actors in promoting their projects during the walkout.
He added, “As somebody who cares a lot about the power of workers in this country and as the father of somebody who writes in film, I am glad that both the writers and the actors came to an agreement that recognizes with worth and their work.”

In “Rustin,” producer and director George C. Wolfe turns the spotlight on Bayard Rustin, a lesser-known contemporary of Martin Luther King Jr. The film reunites Wolfe with his “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” star Colman Domingo, who plays the gay civil rights leader as he prepares for the 1963 March on Washington. “Rustin” hits theaters Nov. 3 prior to streaming on Netflix on Nov. 17.

As his name came up in the research I would go, “Oh, my God!” Then something else would come up, and I would go, “Oh, my God!

Bayard Rustin is getting a posthumous honor from the City of New York.
The civil rights leader is at the center of a new New York City holiday, with Mayor Eric Adams declaring November 3 officially Bayard Rustin Day. Netflix film “Rustin” premieres in select theaters today, November 3, followed by a streaming release November 17.
A special screening of the film at the Paris Theatre is organized by Netflix for 300 high school and city college students to mark Bayard Rustin Day, “honoring the legacy of one of the greatest activists and organizers the world has ever known, Bayard Rustin,” per the official release. The celebration at City Hall follows the screening, with a proclamation being handed to the late Rustin’s partner Walter Naegle designating November 3 as Bayard Rustin Day in NYC and celebrating the theatrical release of the film. Naegle also serves as the executive director of the Bayard Rustin Fund.

A handful of hours before George C. “It’s really emotional for me,” Native Son founder Emil Wilbekin told The Hollywood Reporter. “Coming into this room and seeing all these beautiful Black queer men — who are legends, icons, mentors, new in their careers — you can feel the joy and love because we don’t have spaces like this.”

Netflix this morning dropped the full-length trailer for its civil rights-themed biopic “Rustin,” executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama through their Higher Ground production company and starring Emmy winner Colman Domingo in the lead. It tells the story of the unheralded (until now) movement leader Bayard Rustin (Domingo), the architect of the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and a close friend of Martin Luther King Jr. The trailer abundantly features Domingo of course but also snippets of most members of the all-star cast, which includes Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, Gus Halper, Cch Pounder, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Johnny Ramey, Michael Potts, Jeffrey Wright and Audra McDonald. Watch the trailer above.

In Rustin, George C. Wolfe and Colman Domingo recount how one man helped make a movement.
Set to release on Netflix Nov. 17, the biopic — which features a script from Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black — traces the life and work of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, a gay Black man and a key architect of the 1963 March on Washington.
The emotional thrum that underscores Rustin’s triumphs and challenges amid one of the country’s most significant moments in history, is captured through Grammy-winning jazz and classic artist and composer Branford Marsalis’ score. Captured in multiple cities — New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Charlotte and New Orleans — the soundtrack was recorded digitally, then mixed to analog 2-track before being mastered digitally.
That includes the track “Show Me Your Ideas,” one of the score’s more energetic contributions. The song seemingly captures the initial rhythm of an idea and the eventual buzz of collaboration.

George C. Wolfe’s miraculous new film “Rustin” is many things. It’s a biographical film about Bayard Rustin (played by Colman Domingo), an unsung hero of the Civil Rights movement and a key architect of the 1963 March on Washington. It’s also a buddy movie with Rustin and Martin Luther King Jr. (Aml Ameen). And it’s a process movie about exactly what it takes to launch an event of the march’s scale, complexity and importance.
What makes the movie even more impressive is that it does it all while peeling back the layers of who Rustin was, as a key Civil Rights figure that few know about in the same breath as, say, King, Medgar Evers (who is referenced in the film) or Malcolm X (who is not).
For director Wolfe, learning about Rustin was a discovery process that spanned years.

Anyone even slightly familiar with the work of director George C. Wolfe, whether it be his theater career that’s netted three Tonys, or film projects like “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” which won two Oscars, will immediately see his fingerprints all over the new Netflix film “Rustin.”
“I am not a passive participant in the creative journey. I don’t sit back and wait for somebody to deliver a cast or a script or a production design or anything,” said Wolfe to IndieWire during an interview at the 50th Telluride Film Festival. “I have this rule for myself: Everything either contributes to the telling of the story or distracts. So you’ve got to make sure that everything, everything matters—every costume, every moment. And sometimes one can obsess about crazy things, but ultimately they’re part of the storytelling. And that’s one of the things that I love...

An early morning screening of “Rustin” started on a rousing note over the weekend at the Telluride Film Festival. With a surprise recorded message, the 44th U.S. President Barack Obama greeted the audience with a personal speech, with his and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions having produced the historical biopic about the key figure of a momentous slice of American Civil Rights history. Obama saluted Bayard Rustin, the fearless architect of 1963’s March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, who “recognized injustice and stood up against it.”
Playwright and filmmaker George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin” is an ideologically stirring celebration of that recognition and the fight which followed leading to the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964. It’s also a gracious acknowledgment of the work, determination and resilience grassroots activism takes to hit the ground running with vision and fire in the belly, as well as the joys...

The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom is known to most Americans for Martin Luther King’s galvanizing “I Have a Dream” speech. That oratory milestone appears in Rustin, but from the perspective of the title character. He wasn’t in the spotlight that August day in 1963, but Bayard Rustin was the visionary conceptualizer and day-to-day driving force of one of the largest political rallies in American history. A riveting Colman Domingo, reteaming with director George C. Wolfe after Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, inhabits the role of a fascinating man whose name and story should be more widely known.
Working from a screenplay by Julian Breece (When They See Us) and Dustin Lance Black (When We Rise), Wolfe has made an admiring but nuanced feature that doesn’t aim for biopic completism or cause-and-effect formula. And though it doesn’t entirely avoid the awkwardness of explanatory mode, those moments are few,...

Bringing two projects to Toronto International Film Festival (and likely would’ve been a trio if a certain film didn’t get delayed), Colman Domingo is poised for a major fall. Before The Color Purple arrives at the end of the year, he’ll also be seen in George C. Wolfe’s Rustin and Greg Kwedar’s Sing Sing, both headed to the Canadian Festival. As scripted by Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black, the first trailer has now arrived for his Bayard Rustin biopic ahead of a theatrical and Netflix release this November.
Here’s the synopsis: “The architect of 1963’s momentous March on Washington, Bayard Rustin was one of the greatest activists and organizers the world has ever known. He challenged authority, never apologized for who he was, what he believed, or who he desired. And he did not back down. He made history, and in turn, he was forgotten.

The first trailer for “Rustin” has arrived. The Netflix original film stars the magnetic Colman Domingo as Bayard Rustin, the gay civil rights activist who helped Martin Luther King, Jr. and others organize the 1963 March on Washington.
The film was directed by George C. Wolfe, a five-time Tony Award winner and produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions. The script was written by Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black.
Rustin was, in real life, a close advisor of Martin Luther King, Jr., who wrote of Rustin: “We are thoroughly committed to the method of nonviolence in our struggle and we are convinced that Bayard’s expertness and commitment in this area will be of inestimable value.” Because of Rustin’s sexuality, which included multiple arrests, his story was somewhat sidelined from the conversation at the time. But his importance as a historical figure (and a man) is...

Exclusive: Filmmaker George C. Wolfe was not interested in doing what he termed “icon crap” in his movie Rustin, about the multi-layered life of Bayard Rustin, regarded as one of the most influential organizers of the Civil Rights Movement and the architect of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which took place 60 years ago this week.
“You have to have an extraordinary degree of irreverence and approach it like, ‘This is a human being.’ Because if you’re doing icon crap, it is very easy for you to fall into boring or reverential, and we have statues for that,” said Wolfe of his film that stars Colman Domingo as the man who often was at Dr. Martin Luther King’s side.
Many have opined that Rustin has been neglected by history.
