New Delhi, May 11 (Ians) As sustainability becomes one of the top priorities for companies, Microsoft helped provide 3,09,921 people in India with water access last year, the company has said.
The tech giant supported The Nature Conservancy (Tnc) in improving water quality, storage capacity and groundwater recharge of Lake Sembakkam in Chennai.
This system is expected to treat 6,000-7,000 cubic meter of wastewater daily and improve water quality, storage capacity, and groundwater recharge. It will benefit approximately 10,000 people.
“Along with an ‘AI for Humanitarian Action’ grant, Microsoft partnered with the Sustainable Environment and Ecological Development Society (Seeds) to build an AI model that can forecast the impact of cyclones on the most vulnerable populations in India,” the company informed.
The year 2022 marked the sixth warmest year in history. Extreme weather caused devastating droughts, wildfires, famine, floods, and heat waves with alarming frequency.

It's been more than a decade since the 1990s ended, yet the Internet can't seem to go a day without a reminder of the neon slap bracelets that may have been banned from your school.
Yes, we get it. Times are tough and there's comfort in reflection, but enough is enough.
Below, a final goodbye to the 90s to end the nostalgia once and for all. (We're not kidding. There are 1990 items below.)

Welcome to Miss American Idol, an exciting new reality series from Fox where gorgeous, talented women take the stage and sing for your votes — and then the ones with the skinniest legs advance to the finale.
Wait, that’s not an actual show? Then please someone tell me what I spent two hours watching tonight as a white-hot rage percolated through my circulatory system and turned me into the kind of cussing, fork-throwing (yes, I may have slammed cutlery into the hard wood floor), definitely-not-enjoying-myself monster you’d typically see on a show like Bad Girls Club or The Real Housewives of the Ninth Circle.

Saturday, April 20 is Record Store Day 2013. Will you be buying any vinyl?
Jack White writes on the official website:
As Record Store Day Ambassador of 2013 I'm proud to help in any way I can to invigorate whoever will listen with the idea that there is beauty and romance in the act of visiting a record shop and getting turned on to something new that could change the way they look at the world, other people, art, and ultimately, themselves.
Let's wake each other up.
There are also dozens of records being released only at record stores on Saturday. Some of the really fun ones include a "Dazed and Confused" soundtrack being released on "weed green" vinyl, Porno for Pyros self-titled LP on swirl vinyl and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts "Album" on yellow vinyl.
Others exclusive vinyl releases include Ani Difranco's "Buffalo," Ben Harper's "By My Side," Blind Melon...

Katherine Webb, sadly, has turned in her one-piece and quit the celebrity diving show, Splash. This is disastrous news for everyone who enjoyed the element of charm school classiness and beauty queen sex appeal she brought to ABC’s low-rated Tuesday night reality competition.
Webb had been doing quite well on the program up to this point, even earning a coveted 10.0 score from the judges for not drowning completing a dive with former child star Drake Bell (which you can watch, in all its glory, below). However, as she explained on-air last night, “I’ve had the worst time training this week because even the most simplest dives shot pain all the way from the middle of my back down my leg. I went to the doctor and unfortunately he told me I’m out for the competition.”
Does anyone have her doctor’s phone number? We want to register a complaint.

Good lord! Won’t somebody please think of the spy children? After we saw that Spy Kids‘ star Alexa Vega had blossomed into a studded-bra-wearing butterfly this summer, it made sense that she’d look even sexier by Halloween (albeit sort of like an erotic version of the Blind Melon Bee Girl.) But this Instagram photo Alexa posted on her Instagram of her Machete Kills costume? How…if we…studies show…look, it just shouldn’t be scientifically possible for her to get that much hotter! At this rate by 2013 Alexa Vega will be a one-woman Victoria Secret show with a flatter stomach.
In case you were concerned with anything other than her abs, Vega stars in the upcoming Robert Rodriguez sequel as KillJoy. She’ll be appearing alongside Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara and Jessica Alba, which kind of explains the huge surge in hotness she’s experienced. Those are...

Blind melon. We begin on Redemption Island, where Brandon arrives to greet the predictably snoozy Ozzy. "I got blindsided," Brandon explains, admitting that it hurt to get stabbed in the back by his closest friend. Then Brandon gives Ozzy a partial explanation for that alleged blindsiding. "He wasn't blindsided. He gave up the freakin' Immunity necklace," Ozzy says aptly, calling Brandon's strategy "a blind faith game." This is the smartest and most analytical Ozzy has ever seemed. Coach's dyspeptic pep talk. "Brandon made one of the stupidest moves ever to be made," Sophie gloats, also noting that Albert not returning...

Taking a page from the Ashton Kutcher handbook, Zach Braff explored his inner geekdom by hosting an all-day "Ama" session on Reddit yesterday (that's "Ask Me Anything," for the Luddites out there). Under the handle "zachinoz" -- a reference to the Sam Raimi film he's currently filming with James Franco and Michelle Williams -- the "Scrubs" star candidly fielded questions on his career, proudest moment and best kiss. He wisely remaining mum about others (ahem: "what does Natalie Portman smell like?"). Here, we present some of his best quotables.
On preparing for his audition for Jd on "Scrubs":
I auditioned 6 times. In the end I was up against 4 guys. One was kinda famous. I knew Bill wanted me, but sometimes the network disagrees. I wore the same outfit every audition and listened to Radiohead's "Stop Whispering" and Blind Melon's "Change" to get me pumped up too.

Tuesday was a big day for breakout singer/songwriter Christina Perri. Not only was her long-awaited debut album Lovestrong finally released, but the song that made her an instant success, "Jar of Hearts," was featured on the latest episode of "Glee."
Of course, it's not the first time Perri's tune about letting go of a toxic relationship has been featured prominently on a television show. In fact, almost a year before Lea Michele gave "Jar of Hearts" a go during the prom-themed episode of "Glee" (named, appropriately enough, "Prom Queen"), Perri made a name for herself thanks to the reality competition series "So You Think You Can Dance."

When the news came through on Tuesday (March 8th) that former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr had passed away at the age of 44, it felt tragically familiar. While the rock stars of the early '90s certainly brought forth some truly revolutionary sounds and completely redefined the music industry for a few years, they also set an unnerving precedent for dying young. Rock stars have always had the specter of early death hanging over them, from the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly to Elvis Presley's early exit to John Lennon's tragic murder to Jimi Hendrix's heartbreaking passing.
But the participants of the grunge era seemed to pass away at an alarming rate, with far too many succumbing to drug problems (including Starr's Alice in Chains bandmate Layne Staley, Blind Melon frontman Shannon Hoon and Hole bassist Kristen Pfaff). In fact, one of the inciting incidents...

At this time last year, Christina Perri was one of the many young talents who had transplanted herself to Los Angeles looking for stardom only to find a problematic relationship and a job waiting tables in a coffee shop. But when you have material as strong as Perri's, it's impossible to stay anonymous forever. Her sweet, punchy tunes started to pick up a bit of buzz on YouTube, but when her hook-heavy ballad "Jar of Hearts" appeared on an episode of "So You Think You Can Dance" over the summer, she instantly found herself on the Billboard charts and with offers from record companies. On Tuesday night (December 7), she hit yet another peak in her career, as she delivered a stellar performance as the musical guest on "Conan."

He is now starting a new project with Ray Scheuring, Bret Michaels' bass player. Each guitar is made from raw cut wood, hand picked by Dwight, and crafted with precision. Pitchfork just released their list of the 50 Best Music Videos of the 1990s in honor of, I don’t know, the Ground Zero Mosque debates or something. Regardless of the context, it’s actually an excellent list, and while I’d rank some of the 50 higher based on personal preference and nostalgia, it’s a really comprehensive cross-section of awesome videos and a great way to waste a crappy Tuesday on the internet. Which brings us to today’s simple question: What’s your favorite music video from the 90s? Leave your answers in the comments. Top Fives/Tens and explanations are also welcome. Below, my personal favorite Top 10 videos from the 90s, including some notable omissions from the Pitchfork list: 10. Jamiroquai – “Virtual Insanity” (#28 on Pitchfork List) 9. Soundgarden – “Black Hole Sun” (Not on Pitchfork List) Surprising omission, but one I’ll never forget as it gave my best friend a...

The ultra-sexy, somewhat disturbing cover of Rolling Stone featuring the nude, bloody stars of "True Blood" hits newsstands today, and like any ultra-sexy magazine cover, it's sending shockwaves and grabbing headlines. The image on the cover features very little copy along with "True Blood" stars Anna Paquin, Alexander Skarsgard and Stephen Moyer covered in little more than grimaces and fake blood.
It's not the first time somebody has shown up on the cover of Rolling Stone in a birthday suit. Welcome to the Rileys premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year, and it wasn't that bad of a film. This is the movie where Twilight's Kristen Stewart plays a prostitute/stripper. This movie is going show off another side of Stewart in hopes that people will take her seriously as an actress. Who would of thought you had to play a whore to get some respect? Oh wait, this is Hollywood.
The movie was directed by music video director Jake Scott, whose directed some classic music videos such as Rem’s Everybody Hurts, Radiohead’s Fake Plastic Trees, The Cranberries’ When You’re Gone, as well as videos for Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, Live, Blind Melon, The Strokes, The Verve, U2 and more. Eminem's new single "Not Afraid" is a fantastic return to form for Slim Shady, as it does little more than lay a beat down and let him spit crazy, passionate verses over it. The video, which premiered over the weekend, also taps into a visual place that Eminem has not tapped into in several years. The aggressive, serious nature of the song made him leave behind the wacky trappings of his funny videos and focus on intensity and visual poetry (the sort of thing he used to do with clips like "Stan" and "Lose Yourself"). "Not Afraid" casts Eminem first as a man wandering the streets and then as a Neo-like superhero looking for redemption.
But the whole thing starts on a rooftop in Newark, New Jersey, which brings to mind a number of other famous clips that heavily feature bands playing on the tops of buildings. "Not Afraid" immediately jumps onto this list.

You may have to take my word for it, but the 1990s were a totally insane decade. Especially when it came to music videos.
It was a time when basically every artist got to do whatever they wanted when it came to making videos, no matter the cost, which meant that, sure, we got lots of super-epic "November Rain" types of clips and the occasional iconic "Smells Like Teen Spirit" kind of thing, but mostly, we got lots and lots of introspective, not-entirely-in-focus mood-pieces.

This weekend marks the release of "A Nightmare on Elm Street," a remake of the classic psychological slasher movie of the same name. The original "Nightmare" gave birth to Freddy Krueger, the psychotic killer who murders the children of Elm Street while they sleep. The original film was directed by horror icon Wes Craven (who ended up giving life to other classics like "Scream" and "Shocker"), but the remake is directed by Samuel Bayer. It's the first feature for Bayer, but he is a veteran filmmaker who has made a career out of making some of the most recognizable, award-winning music videos for some of the most iconic artists of the past 20 years.
Bayer kicked his career off with a bang, as his first project out of the gate was as the director of Nirvana's legendary "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video. It was Bayer who put the band in the...

Some performers are so gifted that all they have to do is make noise and you laugh. George Carlin had the gift. Chico Marx had it. Bill Murray and Will Ferrell have it, too. No one, however, got more laughs out of me just from the sound of his voice than Tommy Chong.
Sometimes, when I want to giggle, I just think about Tommy Chong saying, "okay, man" and I'm done. What this says about me, I don't know. So imagine how hard it was for me to keep it together when I was talking to the dude on the phone!! And while he may not do as many "wow"s and "man"s on the phone, it still sounded just like him.
Below are some highlights of our conversation, the day Chong called to shill for his new DVD Cheech and Chong: Hey Watch This! which I have not watched.

I am a classic rock junkie and only 25 years young that seems like an anomaly considering classic in my generation is like the Counting Crows or Blind Melon.
My father raised me listening to an obscene amount of classic rock ranging from The Boxtops, Chuck Berry, Elvis to British Invasion materminds like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and many more.
Pirate Radio not only hones in on this music and the forbidden nature it once had on millions of impressionable teens in the 60s but the formidable craziness it ensued on people emerging the first semblance of pop culture into our global society. Set in 1966, it tells the story of a fictitious pirate radio station broadcasting to the United Kingdom from a ship moored in the North Sea known as Radio Rock. station, which employs some of the fiercest on-air talent around, under the guidance of Captain Quentin...

Elm Street...a nice place to visit, but we wouldn't want to live there! Freddy Krueger is nowhere to be seen (he's back in a trailer half-way between being former "Watchman" star Jackie Earle Haley and being a monstrous nocturnal stalker of attractive high school students), but walking around the 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' facilities from small set to small set to small set, his handiwork is everywhere...
There's an elemental theme to the rooms we're passing through.
In one set, there's a classroom that only barely survived an inferno. The air smells like charcoal and everything from the desks to the books to the ceiling tiles appears charred.
There's a flood room, decorated with childishly scrawled artwork, that's ready for a deluge.
And then there's the dark, earthen cave. It's Freddy's cave, with more kids' drawings on the walls, candles resting in muddy burrows and roots poking down from above.

On Thursday June 25th, I had the opportunity to visit the set of Platinum Dunes' remake/re-imagining of A Nightmare on Elm Street. The film is directed by Samuel Bayer. Many of you might not immediately recognize the name, but Bayer is the man responsible for many of the classic alternative videos from the 1990's (Nivana's Smells Like Teen Spirit, Blind Melon's No Rain...etc), and Nightmare is his feature directorial debut. And Academy Award-nominee Jackie Earle Haley takes over as Freddy Krueger. Throughout the week I'll also be posting interviews we conducted on the set with the producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, director Samuel Bayer, stars Jackie Earle Haley, Rooney Mara, Kyle Gallner and even some of the behind the scenes crew, like special effects make-up artist Andrew Clement. Instead of writing up a boring block of text talking about my experience visiting the Chicago set,...

Tuesday night (February 9) kicked off Hollywood Week(s) on "American Idol," an always-magical time when the dead weight from the early audition episodes gets kicked to the curb faster than you can say "SkiiBoSki."
This season's first Hollywood Week (or Hollyweek) episode was especially epic because it introduced us to an eye-opening new element on the judge's panel that will change the way I view the show forever: The Coke cups were replaced with Vitamin Water Zero bottles. I know! What happened to our show, you guys?
Oh, and I suppose Ellen DeGeneres made her "Idol" judging debut, too.
Yep, Ellen is now officially part of our big, dysfunctional "Idol" family. And although I initially thought she was a terrible choice (based on her spotlight-hogging star power, her conflict of interest and one astoundingly painful guest judge appearance on "So You Think You Can Dance"), I can now say that...

"American Idol" Hollywood Week kicked off on Tuesday night (February 9) with a slew of new faces up on the stage and one new face behind the judges' table. Some singers soared (like Andrew Garcia with his soulful take on Paula Abdul's "Straight Up"), while others crashed and burned (like Vanessa Wolfe and her shaky version of Blind Melon's "No Rain"). Almost everyone could agree, though, that new judge Ellen DeGeneres rocked out on her "Idol" debut.

Making her "American Idol" debut on Tuesday, February 9 on the first round of Hollywood Week episode, Ellen DeGeneres showed that she is more than capable of being a judge on the singing competition show. The host of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show", who was brought into the judging panel to replace Paula Abdul, didn't only bring jokes but also some honest critiques.
The 52-year-old got the chance to show that she won't hold back any harsh comments after Antonio "Skii Bo Ski" Wheeler covered The Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud To Beg". "You frighten me," she said after the performance. "You were stalking us. You were like a leopard behind a cage." She added, "...seriously, don't frighten your audience - don't get so intense. Sexy and scary; it's a fine line."
The comedienne's candid words to Skii Bo Ski weren't the only ones she offered on the episode. She admitted to one contestant,...

Finally! After what felt like an eternity, "American Idol" served up the first dose of Hollywood Week on Tuesday night (February 9). In addition to the 181 potential superstars filing into the Kodak Theater, the show marked the debut of newest judge, talk-show host/ comedian Ellen DeGeneres, who quickly proved that she not only has plenty to say, but says it in an entertaining, thoughtful manner.
"So this is it," DeGeneres said, staring into fellow judge Simon Cowell's eyes as they sat down for the first day of Hollywood singing. "I come on, you leave."
The quip immediately put to rest the weeks of chatter about Cowell's imminent leave-taking at the end of this season and established what seems like a jovial tension between the two new co-workers.

The Vegas oddsmakers have the Indianapolis Colts as five point favorites heading into Sunday night's Super Bowl matchup against the New Orleans Saints. And, well, I'm inclined to believe them. Sure, Drew Brees and the Saints might be the 21st century version of "The Greatest Show on Turf," but the last time we checked, Super Bowl Xliv is being played on natural grass. Not to mention the fact that, at this stage in his career, we wouldn't bet against Peyton Manning if our lives depended on it. He's like the anti-Brett Favre.
Anyway, while reality seems to favor the Colts, we here at MTV News have are using another factor to determine who'll be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy on Sunday: Music. Or, more specifically, the musicians that hail from each team's city. The only problem here is, well, the matchup is a little uneven. New Orleans has got music in its blood,...

Freddy wants more face time, and we're certainly seeing it. Last week the realistic visage of Krueger threw many for a loop. The majority opinion was that it looked like a cheap mask. As long as there has been rock and roll, there have been rock and roll deaths, the ones that come too early and too often as a result of excess. On this day in 1995, the rock world lost Blind Melon singer Shannon Hoon, who died of a cocaine overdose on a tour bus in New Orleans. Hoon's death was especially tragic because his daughter Nico had been born only three months prior to his passing.
Blind Melon's success was sort of an apt metaphor for the loose nature of rock stardom in the alt-rock era. Part psychedelic jam band, part bluesy arena rockers, Blind Melon found themselves thrust into the spotlight when "No Rain" took over the radio airwaves in 1993. The accompanying video, which told the story of a tap dancing outcast known as "Bee Girl," also found itself in major rotation on MTV. But the band couldn't sustain...

A teaser for the forthcoming A Nightmare on Elm Street has been released and, boy howdy, it’s a creepfest.
Starring Watchmen’s Jackie Earle Haley as the iconic killer Freddy Kruger, the plot follows much of the original story about a group of kids tormented by a razor-gloved madman who haunts their dreams.
Based on the original Wes Craven classic from 1984, the reboot will keep the high school setting but is said to focus more on the “psychology of nightmares and Freddy Krueger himself.”
The new A Nightmare on Elm Street is directed by music video man Samuel Bayer (Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit and Blind Melon’s No Rain to name a couple) with a script from veteran screenwriter Wesley Strick (Cape Fear).
Freddy returns April 16th, 2010. Check out the trailer after the jump.

Why were the guys in Hootie and the Blowfish smiling all the time? And what the hell was with that bumblebee girl in Blind Melon's "No Rain" video?
