Exclusive: Malcolm McDowell is saddling up with James Paxton, Bernadette Peters and Laura Marano for Adam Rifkin’s Western Last Train to Fortune.
Last Train to Fortune also reteams McDowell with his former wife, Oscar winner Mary Steenburgen, the duo previously starring together in the 1979 sci-fi drama Time After Time and the 1983 Martin Ritt drama Cross Creek.
In the pic, McDowell plays Cecil Peachtree, a stuffed-shirt schoolmaster who misses the last train to Fortune and meets an outlaw named Dooley (Paxton), at which point they strike a deal: The gunslinger will ride the book-loving Cecil to Fortune in exchange for his teacher’s stipend awaiting him. Along the way there are gunfights, jailbreaks and saloon gals, and our mismatched heroes form an unlikely bond. Blumhouse pumps out horror movies like they’re a fast food restaurant and occasionally one or two projects go completely under the radar.
One such film is Boogeyman Pop, a slasher by director Brad Michael Elmore that stars the late Bill Paxton’s son, James Paxton, alongside M.C. Gainey and José Julián.
In the film that’s set over the course of one summer weekend, a bat-wielding, masked killer in a rusted-out black Cadillac weaves in and out of three interlocking stories awash in sex, drugs, punk rock, black magic, and broken homes.
Here’s the kicker. Boogeyman Pop had its World Premiere at the Cinepocalypse Film Festival way back in 2018 followed by Popcorn Frights and has never screened again. It has yet to be released.
Patrick Bromley reviewed it for Bloody Disgusting, writing that it’s “disjointed and confused.”
Produced by Rogue One screenwriter Chris Weitz, the only footage is the below teaser,...

Back in 2017, quite a bit of media coverage was dedicated to the cinematography on the popular HBO dramedy “Insecure.” Issa Rae’s critically acclaimed series was heralded as an innovator for its ability to consistently capture the richness of Black skin on camera. And it’s true — “Insecure” lights and frames Black faces with warmth and beauty.
But the truth is, Black directors and cinematographers have always found ways to shoot Black skin glamorously. Barry Jenkins’ Best Picture winner “Moonlight,” shot by his frequent collaborator James Paxton, was released just the year before, with its purple and blue hues making every Black face look like a rich oil painting. From the work of Julie Dash and Spike Lee to the more contemporary Dee Rees and Ryan Coogler, we can pull a plethora of images capturing all the nuances of dark skin.

Time is always fleeting, but never has it seemed as warped and malleable as it has in 2020. Reality has been a painful pill to swallow at times this past year, but thankfully we’ve seen bright spots through it all, from much-needed movements for social justice to people casting their ballots for a more stable future than what we’ve experienced these past several years.
As important as it was to stay in tune with the world at large in 2020, it was also important to take the time to unplug, unwind, and relax our minds. For many of us last year, occasional escapism wasn’t just a luxury, it was a survival skill, and thankfully there were still plenty of new horror films, books, video games, and other forms of entertainment to enjoy from the comfort (and safety) of our quarantined homes. Here are some of the horror genre’s...

Agents of Shield Season 7 Episodes 12 & 13
With apologies to The Grateful Dead, it’s been a long strange trip for fans of Agents of Shield which just concluded its seven season run with a finale that neatly ties up enough loose plot threads to keep even the staunchest critics happy and still leaves plenty of room for requisite fan service. Nevertheless, no one can accuse the writers of leaving any cards unplayed. The awakenings, the sacrifices, the reunions, and the redemptions were all completely earned and worthy of this final installment.
Even the most hardcore time travel fans might have a bit of trouble piecing together the mechanics of the team’s struggle to return to the original timeline, but the long awaited return of Fitz provides some clarity concerning his whereabouts and actions designed to prevent Sybil and the Chronicoms from taking control of Earth.

A lot has changed in Agents of Shield season 7, not only as a result of the consequences of time travel, but also because of a shift in certain relationship dynamics. May is more emotional; Coulson can handle technology; Daisy is finding love while Simmons has forgotten hers. All of this points towards one conclusion: the team is transitioning to a life beyond the series finale, which means fans will soon have to do the same.
The end of the seven season run of Agents of Shield is comprised of two episodes entitled “The End is at Hand” and “What We’re Fighting For.” Here’s the official synopsis from ABC: “With their backs against the wall and Nathaniel and Sibyl edging ever closer to eliminating Shield from the history books, the agents must rely on their strengths to outsmart and outlast the Chronicoms. This is their most important fight, and...

Agents of Shield Season 7 Episode 11
There are certain narrative advantages to Agents of Shield experiencing a different timeline in its final season. The changes to history can be catastrophic, but even if it’s not all undone, the show is ending anyway, allowing the stakes to be much higher. Fortunately, those cards are being played during a penultimate episode that also features some surprising emotional turns, but it’s nevertheless difficult to see how the series can provide satisfying endings for all of its principal characters.
That doubt springs from Agents of Shield’s necessary but frustrating decision to focus on Kora and Nathaniel in this episode. These characters’ motivations undoubtedly became more clearly defined even though their attempted manipulation of our heroes failed, but with time running out for resolution, reinforcing Nathaniel’s dedication to anarchy or Kora’s rationalization for...

"One, two, three...!" Freestyle Digital Media has released a trailer for an indie dramedy film titled Teenage Badass, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Grant McCord. This was supposed to premiere at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year before it was cancelled, and will now launch on VOD in the fall. Set in 2006, Teenage Badass follows a band when they score a shot to play on the local news. But as all of their dreams start to become a reality, the band's egocentric singer / songwriter threatens to make them lose everything they have worked for. The story actually follows the drummer, played by Mcabe Gregg; and the lead singer Kirk Stylo is played by Evan Ultra. Also starring Julie Ann Emery, Kevin Corrigan, James Paxton, Madelyn Deutch, Elsie Hewitt, and Dillon Lane. The tone in this trailer is all over the place, and it seems like just some...

Although its future was often in doubt season to season, Agents of Shield season 7 was a sure thing right from the start as ABC renewed the series for two shortened seasons shortly after the end of season five. With the introduction of another time travel storyline — this time to the past — the fact that season 7 will be the show’s final run introduces interesting possibilities for coming full circle with the origins of the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization.

Agents of Shield fans may have initially been surprised at how well the actor portraying a young John Garrett, the charming double agent portrayed by the late Bill Paxton in season one, was able to mimic the actor’s recognizable mannerisms, even evoking vibes of Paxton’s famous Aliens role. However, those who recognized the actor as Bill’s own son James Paxton saw instead a fitting tribute and a touching family legacy as the role was passed on.
Seeing young Garrett during the team’s visit to 1983 might not at first have seemed to fit with the storyline surrounding Inhumans, but longtime viewers of Agents of Shield will remember that the agent’s secret involvement with Hydra stemmed from an incident where he was injured in Sarajevo, becoming one of the first subjects of Project Deathlok to replace his damaged parts with machinery. His obsession with superpowers, however, may...

Agents of Shield Season 7 Episode 10
Let’s not mince words; Nathaniel Malick is not a great Agents of Shield villain. However, “Stolen” does enhance his antagonism a little even as it emphasizes his weaknesses, and the resulting mayhem is still cool to watch. And by the end of the episode, we at least get a hint of Sybil’s plan even if her reliance on Inhuman powers seems only indirectly related to getting what she supposedly really wants: a new Chronicom home planet.
Specifically, Nathaniel as a viable enemy has two problems. First of all, his disconnectedness from Hydra and his father’s devotion to Hive is explained via a love of anarchy, which comes across as a very bland flavor of evil. And secondly, his foreknowledge of the events in the Shield team’s lives gives him an advantage that he doesn’t deserve,...

Possibly the most generic, unexciting name for a vampire movie, I didn’t have high hopes for Bit. But it has so much good going for it that I can definitely forgive its three lettered title.
Bit shows the very feminist story of a transgender woman, Laurel (Nicole Maines) leaving home for the summer and moving in with her brother in L.A. On her first night there, she goes to a club and meets Izzy (Zolee Griggs), who quickly turns her into a vampire and soon after she joins her group of vampires. We soon learn that these (now) five vampires have a rule that they don’t turn men. The ‘lead’ vampire Duke (Diana Hopper) exclaims that she “dreams of a world where all women are vampires.

Its central characters jaded club youth who just happen to be vampires — and seem not to have developed any depth or maturity no matter how long they’ve been doing this undead thing — “Bit” seems likewise content to act cool in the shallow end of the pool. Brad Michael Elmore’s feature flirts with various identification points without making much of them, beyond the automatic cred that placing an Lgbtq stamp on genre tropes will mean for some viewers. If the “Twilight” movies were aimed primarily at teens, this polished low-budget indie is for those teens hip enough to be in their school’s Gay-Straight Alliance.

"How would you like to hold the keys to the kingdom, for a change?" Provocator Films has debuted the official trailer for an indie horror coming-of-age dark comedy titled Bit, the latest from writer / director Brad Michael Elmore. This premiered at the Frameline Film Festival last year, and will be available to watch on VOD this month. Bit is the story of Laurel, a teenage transgender girl who moves to Los Angeles and falls in with a gang of intersectional feminist vampires. Not knowing if they want to kill her, befriend her or turn her, Laurel learns to understand the love and dangers of her new and first group of friends. Starring Nicole Maines as Laurel, with Diana Hopper, James Paxton, Zolee Griggs, Friday Chamberlain, Char Diaz, Tiffany Milian, and M.C. Gainey. This looks cool! Fun and spunky and, yes, biting. The 27th edition of the SXSW Film Festival will feature a romantic caper starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, a documentary about the Beastie Boys directed by Spike Jonze, a “hidden camera” comedy headlined by Tiffany Haddish and an autobiographical studio vehicle from Pete Davidson.
Thousands of moviegoers will flock to Austin, Texas, starting on March 13 for the annual gathering, which is a launching pad for major summer — or spring — studio releases, as well as smaller independent films and buzzy TV shows.
“King of Staten Island,” which stars Davidson, will open the fest. The movie is directed by Judd Apatow, who is no stranger to SXSW, having brought many of his hit projects — from “Knocked Up” to “Bridesmaids” — to screen first at SXSW.

Chicago – John Travolta continues to surprise by challenging himself in offbeat roles. His latest is “The Fanatic,” which had its nationwide release on August 30th. To promote the film and greet admirers, Travolta stopped by the Wizard World Comic Con in Chicago, and Joe Arce of HollywoodChicago.com shot an Exclusive Photo.
“The Fanatic” was based on a true story that actually occurred to co-writer/director Fred Durst, the front man for the band Limp Bizkit. The topic is extreme fandom and stalking, and Travolta portrays Moose, an autistic man who worships horror film actor Hunter Dunbar (Devon Sawa). After finding out where his hero lives, Moose begins stalking him relentlessly, escalating into a dangerous situation for Dunbar. Durst based the story on a fan who pursued him during the height of Limp Bizkit’s popularity.

Prominently placed at the start of a very long final credit crawl is what may go down in motion picture history as one of the most misguided displays of somber self-congratulation ever: “John Travolta Is Moose. ‘The Fanatic.’ A Fred Durst Film.” Given that this is a movie that starts with an onscreen-text quote from its own bad dialogue, the clueless hubris is no longer surprising by that point. Still,
For starters, it is the worst Travolta vehicle in some time, and coming just a year after the double whammy of “Gotti” and “Speed Kills,” that is really saying something. It also finds him entering that unfortunate pantheon of presumably well-intentioned performances of differently-abled characters that somehow emerge a compendium of the most cringe-inducing clichés of people with limited faculties.

"I just wanted an autograph!" Quiver Distribution has debuted an official trailer for a stalker thriller titled The Fanatic, the latest film directed by Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst. He's a filmmaker, too! This is the third feature film he has directed, and it's getting a release in select theaters next month. The Fanatic is the movie starring John Travolta as a deranged celebrity fanboy, who just wants an autograph from his favorite movie star. After he finds out where he lives, his actions start to take a dark turn as his obsession grows stronger. And the star finds himself in more danger. Of course he does! I am sure both Travolt and Durst have real stories like this themselves. The cast includes Devon Sawa, Ana Golja, Jacob Grodnik, James Paxton, and Josh Richman. It looks as crazy as it sounds, and might actually be a fun(ny) watch. Here's...

When it comes to the vampire subgenre of horror, it's safe to say that by now, we've seen every take under the sun. From the Bela Lugosi portrayal in Dracula, all the way to the sparkly, angst-filled Twilight vamps, it's been done and with varying results. It's hard to make a good vampire film and when it Is done right, we're given films like Joel Schumacher's The Lost Boys. A bloodsucker-filled entry that to this day is considered one of the best vampire films of all time, The Lost Boys gave its viewers an experience that simply can't be rivaled.
While we've since received a handful of great vampire films, such as Larry Fessenden's Habit or David Slade's 30 Days of Night, very few films have captured that punk rock, Idgaf attitude that Schumacher's film confidently displayed... very few films, until now. Daily Dead readers, I am...
