Exclusive: CBS is developing Zarna, a multi-camera comedy starring stand-up comedian Zarna Garg. The project, which drew interest from multiple networks, comes from The Big C creator Darlene Hunt, Mindy Kaling’s Kaling International, Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat and Warner Bros. Television, where Kaling International is under an overall deal.
In Zarna, written by Garg and Hunt, Zarna (Garg) is a proud immigrant woman who’s been raising her American-born kids on Indian values. But now that they’re getting older, it’s time for her to focus on her own American dream.
The story reflects Garg’s own story. She immigrated from her native India to the U.S. as a teenager and, after getting BA and Jd degrees, spent 16 years as a stay-at-home mom before her children encouraged her to try stand-up, launching her comedy career.

It’s hard to make a yearly awards show feel special when it’s staged twice in one year. Such was the challenge facing the 76th annual Emmy Awards, which aired just eight months after its warmly nostalgic predecessor due to the prior show’s strike-related delay. (Both shows were helmed by the same producing team.) Factor in the Television Academy’s tendency toward repeat honorees — and more recently, select shows to sweep all awards in their category within a given year — and it’s understandable why Sunday’s broadcast was a relatively muted affair. But drab is drab. Whatever the justifications, the 76th Emmys were a far less dynamic and more stilted watch than the January show.
Take the signature flourish of a night that was otherwise straightforwardly staged: grouping presenters by archetype of character, from fathers to villains to doctors, and surrounding them with custom sets and backdrops.

Richard Gadd took home the award for best actor in a limited series for his role in Baby Reindeer at the 2024 Emmys.
Gadd kicked off his acceptance speech by saying he didn’t prepare any remarks because he didn’t think he’d win in a category against Fellow Travelers’ Matt Bomer, Fargo‘s Jon Hamm, Feud: Capote vs. the Swans‘ Tom Hollander and Ripley‘s Andrew Scott.
“Jon Hamm, I’m your biggest fan, as I told you for ages last night, over and over again, but like, this is not the world,” he said, before thanking the people he forgot to thank when he accepted for best writing for a comedy series earlier in the night, including his parents.
“I’d like to thank my mom and dad — a glaring omission from the previous one as well,” he noted. “They’ve been there for me, a constant source of love and support.

“I honestly feel like I’m going to wake up any minute now this whole thing has been a dream,” she began her acceptance speech. “I’m so incredibly proud to be part of Baby Reindeer. So, I just would love to say a huge thank you to everybody who let me, really.”
Gunning also took a moment to praise the show’s creator and star, Richard Gadd.
“My biggest thanks has to go to, Mr. Richard Gadd. I’ve tried so many times to put into words what working on Baby Reindeer meant to me, and I fail every time. So I’m going to sing,” she joked, before adding, “I’ll keep it simple and just say thank you for trusting me to be your Martha.

For the second time this year, Hollywood gathered to honor TV’s biggest stars.
After the 2023 ceremony was delayed to January 2024 by last year’s Hollywood strikes, it’s only been eight months since TV’s biggest stars gathered at Los Angeles’ LA Live Peacock Theatre to announce the Emmy winners. Like months ago, “The Bear” stars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach once again won lead actor and supporting actor in a comedy, and co-star Colón-Zayas also won her first Emmy in the supporting actress race. “Hacks” star Jean Smart won lead actress in a comedy, and in the biggest surprise of the night, HBO’s “Hacks” won outstanding comedy over “The Bear,” which many believed to be the frontrunner.
“The Bear” broke its own record of 10 comedy wins for a single season, which it achieved last year, with its 11 trophies on Sunday, including directing for Christopher Storer. FX...

Is “Shōgun” adding more Emmy hardware to its historic haul? Will “The Bear” break its own record? Those are the big questions heading into the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will be broadcast live coast-to-coast from Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. Est/5 p.m Pst on ABC.
Hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, the main ceremony caps off a television year dominated by “Shōgun,” which already set a record for most Emmys by a drama series in a single year when it nearly swept the Creative Arts Emmys with 14. The FX drama, led by Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, will attempt to beef up its overall take when it competes with eight nominations in six top categories: drama series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, writing and directing. TheWrap’s awards guru Steve Pond boldly predicts “Shōgun” will go six for six on Sunday.

It’s television’s biggest night, and it’s posed to be a record-breaking one if contenders like “Shōgun” and “The Bear” continue expected sweeps.
The way of things was signaled at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys September 7 and 8 when “Shōgun” broke records grabbing 14 trophies, sweeping every category except the main title theme and original score. “Shōgun” took casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period/fantasy production design, period/fantasy hairstyling, main title design, non-prosthetic period/fantasy/sci-fi makeup, prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt performance, and broke a record previously held by “Game of Thrones.”
Tonight, the FX drama is nominated for Best Drama series, among a slew of acting nominations where it looks to continue its stunning run.
On the comedy side, defending champ “The Bear,” also FX, will take on the third season of Max’s “Hacks,” among other contenders like “Abbott Elementary,” and...

Frank Oz’s illustrious career will be celebrated by the Museum of the Moving Image with screening series “The Magic of Oz: A Frank Oz Retrospective.”
All 15 films Oz directed will screen, ranging from “Little Shop of Horrors” to “The Muppets Take Manhattan” to “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and “Bowfinger.” Oz’s acting roles in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Inside Out,” plus his character creations for “Sesame Street” and “The Muppet Show,” will also be part of the lineup. The series will take place from October 4 to November 30.
“Frank Oz has been a revered and adored artist for generations, yet I’d argue he’s under-appreciated for his filmmaking, which he’s dedicated the past 40 years to,” curator of film Eric Hynes said.
“From the beginning he defied expectations, starting with his now-classic homage to the Hollywood studio musical and B-movie creature feature, ‘Little Shop of Horrors,’ and continuing through...

The new iteration of “The Office” at Peacock is adding three new cast members.
Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei and Ramona Young will all star in the series alongside previously announced cast members Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore.
The new castings were first reported by the Palisadian-Post in Pacific Palisades, CA, as the actors were shadowing reporters at the publication in preparation for their roles.
As has been previously reported, the show is not a reboot or spinoff of “The Office,” but rather a new mockumentary show with a new cast set in the same universe. It is rumored to be currently titled “The Paper” but no official title has been announced. The official logline states:
“The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.

New Girl is definitely one of the most heartwarmingly funny series about friends and love created by Elizabeth Meriwether. The Fox comedy series follows the chirpy and naive Jessica as she moves into a loft with 3 guys who are equally as quirky and weird. New Girl stars Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone, Lamorne Morris, Damon Wayans Jr., Nasim Pedrad, and Megan Fox. New Girl lasted for seven seasons ending its run in 2018, so if you loved the unending optimism, quirky personalities, and a group of young friends trying to find their way here are some similar shows you should check out next.

Charli Xcx has reluctantly embraced her tweet declaring Kamala Harris is “brat” becoming a phenomenon during this year’s presidential election.
In her New York magazine cover story, the pop star was asked about the divisive social media statement about the vice president. She explained that she wrote it while relaxing in the pool at her Los Angeles home, not thinking much about it as a political endorsement, but rather “something positive and lighthearted” to welcome the new presidential nominee.
However, the English singer’s approval for Harris led to her album, Brat — which had already become part of the zeitgeist this summer with the music’s “no cares” attitude, viral star-studded remixes and the eye-catching green cover art — being co-opted by Harris’ political campaign and turned into a meme. Now Harris’ “brat” status was being discussed on CNN and Fox News. Even Bill Maher weighed in, opining that Harris being “brat” sounds “like Trump.

Beyoncé may not have shown up as the DNC’s surprise guest last night, but the celebrity power was certainly on full display throughout the four-night event, with guest hosts like Tony Goldwyn, Mindy Kaling, and Kerry Washington introducing each night’s lineup of speakers and comedians such as Kenan Thompson and D.L. Hughley offering their services to bring some laughs to the raucous occasion. However, the real star of the convention was undoubtedly the Vice President herself, Kamala Harris. Hailing from California, she has strong ties to Hollywood and pulled out all the stops in utilizing those relationships to sell herself and her story to the American people, including having acclaimed filmmaker and friend Reginald Hudlin put together a short documentary on her life and career.
As previously revealed by Harris’ husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff on X, formerly known as Twitter, Hudlin and his wife Chrisette were integral in setting the couple up.

While Thursday night’s big finish at the Democratic Party’s quadrennial pep rally was a rousing speech by current Vice President and 2024 party nominee Kamala Harris, a great many people online had been led to believe that 32-time Grammy-winning recording artist Beyoncé would show up at the United Center in Chicago.
The rumor began on X, formerly Twitter, a website that used to have a fairly rigorous verification process before Elon Musk purchased it, with “insiders” saying that the final night would feature a “special guest” that would be even more of a shocker than Oprah Winfrey, who made an appearance earlier in the week. Then TMZ, an outlet that has a very good track record for being first with entertainment news, wrote that “Queen Bey will be the big surprise performer as VP Harris officially accepts the Democratic party’s nomination to run for president.”

Despite weeks of rumors and unconfirmed reports that she would be performing or at least introducing Kamala Harris, Beyoncé “was never scheduled” to attend the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
“Beyonce was never scheduled to be there,” a rep for the singer told the Hollywood Reporter. “The report of a performance is untrue.”
Her non-appearance came as a surprise to many people. The 32-time Grammy-winning artist approved the Harris campaign’s use of her “Lemonade” song “Freedom” in a campaign video and has since allowed the ticket to use the song throughout their campaign.
In addition, the singer previously endorsed the Joe Biden/Harris ticket in 2000, and she performed in support of Hillary Clinton four years prior to that, on top of performing at Barack Obama’s second inauguration in 2013.

The Democratic National Convention delighted Scandal fans everywhere when it announced that Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn would be among the week’s lineup of nightly Hollywood hosts.
The pair played out having proximity to the White House onscreen when they starred opposite each other as Washington, D.C., fixer Olivia Pope and President Fitzgerald “Fitz” Grant on Shonda Rhimes’ hit ABC political drama that ran for seven seasons. But in real life, the actors have become vocal political activists for the Democratic party.
Goldwyn was set as the opening night host, with Washington readying to host the final night, when Vice President Kamala Harris would officially accept the Democratic party’s nomination for the 2024 presidential race.
With three nights between them, it wasn’t clear if a Scandal reunion would materialize. But, on Wednesday, the third night of the DNC, the former co-stars were both in the arena at...

A representative for Beyoncé says the singer will not attend the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
“Beyoncé was never scheduled to be there,” the Grammy-winning star’s rep tells The Hollywood Reporter. “The report of a performance is untrue.”
Rumors about the pop star attending and performing at this year’s DNC, celebrating Vice President Kamala Harris’ historic presidential nomination, have exploded online throughout the week.
On Wednesday, it was reported that Pink would be the headline act ahead of Harris’ speech. On Thursday, Pink — who performed “What About Us” with her daughter Willow — appeared to have moved up in the lineup, continuing to add fuel to the fire about a surprise guest coming later in the night.
Beyoncé’s presence was ultimately still felt in Chicago’s United Center arena, as her song “Freedom” ended up playing Harris both on and off the stage for her speech when she formally accepted...

The 2024 Democratic National Convention concludes Thursday, with Vice President Kamala Harris set to formally accept her party’s nomination for President of the United States.
“Our convention is an opportunity to bring the story of our party to the American people — not just the story of what we’ve achieved under the Biden-Harris administration, but how the Harris-Walz ticket is planning to build on that historic record for a new way forward into the future,” Convention Chair Minyon Moore said in a statement. “The story here is simple and it’s one that will resonate with Americans across the country:...

This year’s DNC, celebrating Vice President Kamala Harris’ historic presidential nomination, was hosted by Tony Goldwyn, Ana Navarro, Mindy Kaling and Kerry Washington, with each star emceeing one night of the event. The four-day convention featured performances by Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Patti Labelle and other major musicians; surprise appearances by the likes of Oprah Winfrey, who gave a speech urging those who are registered as independent like herself to vote; a daytime panel moderated by Julia Louis-Dreyfus; and more.

The Democratic National Convention continued to make major headlines on Wednesday (August 21) evening, with standout speeches from party A-listers like former President Bill Clinton, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, House Democrats’ Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Ultimately, though, the entire evening — which was themed “A Fight for Our Freedoms” — was buildup to Governor Walz accepting the party’s nomination for vice president with an emotional speech. As with the last two nights, DNC Night Three ran late into the evening, but that didn’t stop folks from tuning in. Kamala Harris is the candidate, but Nancy Pelosi’s hold on the party is still strong, as the Speaker Emerita made clear Wednesday at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
“I know that Vice President Harris is ready to take us to new heights,” said the longtime congresswoman from California’s 11th district in a primetime address to a packed United Center, one day before the first Black woman ever nominated for president by a major American political party takes the same stage. “Politically, she is astute and strategic in winning difficult elections, quickly securing the nomination with dignity and grace and choosing Tim Walz as our vice president,” Pelosi added in the highest praise possible for such a political grandmaster.
In that context, in the complicated factions of the Democratic Party, Pelosi’s daughter put it best when she tweeted tonight:

As celebrity host of the third night of the Democratic National Convention, Mindy Kaling took the stage to support the presidential campaign of Kamala Harris, who she said she calls a friend.
After joking that she was “the woman who courageously outed Kamala Harris as Indian in an Instagram cooking video,” Kaling shared her observations from one of the first times she met the vice president:
“She wasn’t Madam Vice President then — she was my senator, and we were filming a video where she came to my home to cook dosas, a South Indian dish,” Kaling recalled. “It’s not every day that a senator comes over, and I was pretty nervous, but when she arrived, we immediately hit it off. We talked about the love we have for our moms, who had both passed away from cancer. Both of our mothers were immigrants from India who came to...
