The Beastie Boys’ 1994 classic Ill Communication turns 30 this year and as part of the ongoing celebration, the band has partnered with Vevo for a special annotated version of the “Sabotage” video.
The clip — which is part of Vevo’s “Footnotes” series — is packed with facts about the classic Spike Jonze-directed clip, in which McA, Ad-Rock, and Mike D pay homage to Seventies cop shows. According to one of the annotations, Ad-Rock (Adam Horovitz) had long had the idea for a video where the band dressed up as undercover cops during a stakeout.

In 1994, Beastie Boys’ Ad-Rock teamed up with Monty Messex and “Crazy Tom” Davis to form a hardcore punk band called Dfl (Dead Fucking Last). Now, the band is reissuing their debut album My Crazy Life in a deluxe package that arrives August 11th via Trust Records.
While the ’90s saw the rise of pop punk, Dfl sought to return to the fast and raw sounds of the ’80s, when hardcore orginated. Monty Messex, who had previously been in The Atoms, recalled the formation of the side project in a statement.
“In 1993, I was obsessively listening to Bad Religion’s How Could Hell Be Any Worse,” he said. “I had this beat up cassette that I’d listen to over and over and over and over again on my Walkman. That record brought me back to the early 80s hardcore scene I grew up on — that included Circle Jerks, the Germs,...

The Avalanches have revealed their long-unreleased Mf Doom remix of “Tonight May Have to Last Me All My Life,” one of 15 unearthed remixes, dubs, and demos off the Australian group’s 20th-anniversary reissue of their classic 2001 album Since I Left You.
More than just putting his signature touches on the remix, the late Daniel Dumile also recorded the vocal contribution for the track, with the affectionate verse arriving just six months after the announcement of Mf Doom’s death.

Also included are interviews with Beastie collaborators Mario Caldato Jr. and Mark Nishita, illustrating the winding road that led to the classic album." Through footage and the words of his friends, the documentary captures Adam Yauch's journey into activism, which would blossom with the Tibetan Freedom Concerts later in the decade, as well as his famous denunciation of misogyny in hip-hop on the single "Sure Shot". This...

When indie luminary Manu Chao first released his 1998 debut, Clandestino — and the song of the same title — he sought to humanize the millions of migrants, survivors of civil war and poverty hustling to survive on the mean streets of European cities. Often derided as “clandestinos,” or what those in the English-language world refer to derogatorily as “illegals,” undocumented migrants and their stories pervaded Manu Chao’s now-classic album — which at times explored his own relationship to immigration, as a child of political refugees from Spain.

One of the best things about Beastie Boys Book, the massive memoir being released this week, is how wildly overstuffed it is with jokes, insights and unexpected voices. It’s mostly made up of incredible first-person memories from Adam Horovitz and Michael Diamond, but there are also interjections from friends like Wes Anderson, Luc Sante and Amy Poehler; a recipe section from chef Roy Choi; a photo scrapbook from Spike Jonze; a short graphic-novel chapter; and lots more. “We wanted to have it be different, with little chapters about different things,...
