TrustNordisk has snapped up international sales rights to the new Danish crime thriller “Boundless,” based on fiction guru Jussi Adler-Olsen’s “Den Grænseløse,” his sixth novel in the Department Q series.
Danish helmer Ole Christian Madsen, credited for the HBO series “Banshee” (2013-16) and WWII drama “Flame & Citron” starring Mads Mikkelsen, has taken up the challenge of bringing Adler-Olsen’s suspenseful universe to the silver screens, working from a script by Jakob Weis.
Christian Madsen will reunite with his “Banshee” actor Ulrich Thomsen. The latter reprises the role of detective Carl Mørck, which he played in Nordisk Film Production’s previous Department Q film version, “The Marco Effect”.
The helmer said he has “a profound respect for the world built in Adler-Olsen’s novels, that he finds both “intriguing and fascinating.” “I do believe ‘Boundless’ the movie could expand that world even more,” he asserted.

If you didn’t know what you were getting into upon sitting down for Bruce Beresford‘s Mr. Church, you will following this onscreen text: “Inspired by a True Friendship.” The vagueness of this statement notwithstanding, the words ooze enough schmaltz to prepare you for the melodrama of death and miracles screenwriter Susan McMartin has concocted. Maybe she based it on a friendship she had with an adult male who become her father figure in a time of need or perhaps the entire premise is a purely fictional construct surrounding feelings experienced within a relationship devoid of similarities besides being between two people. All I know for certain is that those involved didn’t just want to make any old tearjerker; they sought to squeeze their audience dry like a sponge.

Called “a stylish, sensitive coming-of-ager” by Variety and winner of the Independent Spirit Awards’ “Someone to Watch” honor for director Felix Thompson, King Jack debuts on DVD September 13 from Well Go USA Entertainment. Set over a hazy summer weekend, the film is a tough and tender coming-of-age story about friendship and finding happiness in rough surroundings starring Charlie Plummer (“Boardwalk Empire”), Cory Nichols (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2), Christian Madsen (Divergent) and Danny Flaherty (“The Americans”). King Jack follows a scrappy 15-year-old (Plummer) who bonds with his introverted cousin (Nichols) while facing off against a bully (Flaherty). The critically-acclaimed drama won the Audience Award for Narrative Film at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival.

It's been a long time since I've seen a good film from Eddie Murphy. He used to be one of my favorite comedians back in the day, but then Hollywood took him down a road of making one bad film after another. I was hoping that one day he would make a comeback, and his upcoming new film, Mr. Church, might be a starting point for that comeback.
Mr. Church tells the story of a unique friendship that develops when a little girl and her dying mother retain the services of a talented cook - Henry Joseph Church. What begins as a six month arrangement instead spans fifteen years, and creates a family bond that lasts forever.
This looks like a solid film that tells a sweet feel-good inspirational story. I like what I saw in the trailer, and it also has a great cast that also includes Britt Robertson...

"You gave me the most important thing that life can offer - you gave me a family." Cinelou Releasing has debuted an official trailer for the heartfelt drama Mr. Church, starring Eddie Murphy as a talented cook named Henry Joseph Church - based on a real person. This isn't a comedy, though it starts out with some light humor, it's actually a drama with some strong emotions - Mr. Church was a chef for a family in Los Angeles in the 1960s & 70s that had a mother ill with cancer. The film also stars Britt Robertson (from Tomorrowland) as well as Natascha McElhone, Lucy Fry, Christian Madsen, and Xavier Samuel. Fun fact - Samuel Jackson was originally going to star, but Murphy replaced him after scheduling conflicts. This looks charming, maybe not the best film you'll see all year, but a sweet and touching story. Have a look. Here's the...

Winning debut about a small-town boy put in charge of his younger cousin for the weekend
This impressive debut feature from the writer-director Felix Thompson treads well-worn territory as it maps out the adolescent rites of passage of its titular anti-hero, excellently played by Boardwalk Empire graduate Charlie Plummer. Stuck in a small town with his older brother Tom (Christian Madsen) and his mother Karen (Erin Davie), outsider Jack finds himself suddenly entrusted with the care of his young cousin Ben (Cory Nichols), with whom he shares a life-changing weekend. There are shadows in King Jack of the early work of David Gordon Green as Brandon Roots’s camera finds magic-hour beauty in the rough edges of the locations, and a plaintively noodling soundtrack accentuates the atmosphere of alt-indie melancholia.
There is violence lurking here, too. A longstanding feud with an older boy leads to some distressing scenes of assault,...

After serving up a compelling drama in the Jennifer Aniston-led Cake earlier this year, Cinelou Films is beginning to turn its attention to Cook. Starring Eddie Murphy and Tomorrowland‘s Britt Robertson, the film follows Murphy’s Henry Church — an everyday yet artistic culinary expert who agrees to cook meals for the family of a dying man.
Production is still very much in its nascent stage, but today we’ve been given our first look at the two leading stars via Deadline. It’s not an image to stop the presses by any means, but at least it provides us with an inkling of Murphy and Robertson’s two characters, who will grow closer and closer over the course of fifteen years. The pair will be joined in the drama by Lucy Fry, Xavier Samuel and Christian Madsen.

Exclusive: Here’s the first look at Eddie Murphy starrer Cook along with actress Britt Robertson, which has begun principal photography in Los Angeles. Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon are producing for Cinelou Films, the banner behind Jennifer Aniston indie Cake, and two-time Oscar nominee Bruce Beresford is directing. Susan McMartin (Mom) penned the script based on her own experiences with the cook that came to live with her and her mother when McMartin was a child. Initially, the arrangement was intended to last six months—the life expectancy of McMartin’s ill mother—but it instead developed into a lasting and influential friendship of 15 years.
Murphy plays the title role, Mr. Church, who begins cooking meals for 11-year-old Charlotte (called Charlie) and her mother, Marie (Natascha McElhone) in the early 1970s. As the older Charlie (Britt Robertson) continues to navigate through life without Marie, she comes to rely on the quiet and service-oriented Mr.

Despite the lottery-esque sounding odds, the U.S Dramatic Competition section which produces the finest American indie specimens such as Frozen River, Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fruitvale Station and Whiplash is fairly consistent in terms of quality. Last year’s crop of sixteen have almost all had their theatrical releases with Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter being the last one out of the gates (pegged with an early 2015 release). Last week we individually looked at our top 80 Sundance Film Fest Predictions (you’ll find 30 other titles worth considering in our intro) and below, we’ve split the list into narrative and non-fiction film items and have both identified and color-coded our picks in an AtoZ cheat sheet. What I like about a fest such as Sundance, is that it’s not only a place where we’ll find semi-star vehicle material with players in the indie biz, but they also launch the careers of new directors and is loaded with fresh faces. King Jack is the type of film that falls into the later category. Two time SXSW short filmmaker Felix Thompson began filming in this past summer and while we think there is a great deal of polishing involved, the pic, which was selected for the Sundance Institute Creative Producing Lab fellow program has a legit shot.

The documentary explores how an iconic piece of machinery helped shape music and society on both sides of the Atlantic in the ’70s and ’80s, examining its place in the rise of hip-hop and punk.
From the boombox’s origins as a ‘sonic campfire’ for urban youth to share music and ideas to its gradual re-appropriation in popular culture with the emergence of the Walkman, MTV and the CD player, the film considers...

Five months ago, the first installment of Veronica Roth‘s best-selling “Divergent” trilogy finally hit the big screen. Not only did Neil Burger‘s film cross the $100 million mark at the box office, but it also introduced the general public to a group of up-and-coming young actors — such as Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller, Theo James, and Ansel Elgort — with bright futures. Among those up and comers is Christian Madsen, a 24-year-old who calls veteran character actor Michael Madsen his father and Oscar-nominated actress Virginia Madsen his aunt. “Divergent” fans know him for playing Al, the shy, gentle giant who [...]

Both Kings and Jacks are wild this summer as Screen Daily reports that filming on King Jack is set to begin this summer. Directed by two time SXSW short filmmaker Felix Thompson and produced along with Buffalo Picture House’s Gabrielle Nadig and Dominic Buchanan of Gimme the Loot fame (a rare SXSW to Un Certain Regard selection), the project is a note-worthy trade item in our books because Nadig was among the select few (same time last year actually) to be named as a Sundance Institute Creative Producing Lab fellow (other producers with project include still in development items from Brett Potter (producer on Andrew Renzi’s The Fort) and Chris Ohlson (producer for Zellner Bros.’ Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter). Whitewater’s Rick Rosenthal, Bert Kern and Nick Morton are exec producing, and so are Stink’s Daniel Bergmann and Martin Forbes. Corey Deckler co-produces.

Talk about poor timing. The same week James Franco, 35, allegedly flirted with tourist Lucy Clode, 17, via Instagram, the first trailer for his drama Palo Alto debuted on Yahoo Movies. The film, based on Franco's book of short stories and directed by Gia Coppola, tells the story of a group of high school students in California. Franco plays a high school soccer coach who hooks up one of his teen players (Emma Roberts). In one scene, Franco's character tells her, "I'm older and I know that there aren't a lot of good things around." Palo Alto received an R-rating for strong sexual content, drug and alcohol use and pervasive language. It stars Keegan Allen, Val Kilmer, Christian Madsen,...

Gia Coppola, the next generation in the Coppola family of filmmakers, is making her debut with Palo Alto, a teenage drama based on the short story collection by James Franco, entitled "Palo Alto: Stories." The film stars Emma Roberts (American Horror Story: Coven), Val Kilmer, Nat Wolff, Christian Madsen, Chris Messina, Keegan Allen, and James Franco in what looks like an engaging look at contemporary teenagers living in Palo Alto, California. The trailer certainly has the...

When James Franco released Palo Alto: Stories, a collection of short stories about wasted youth in the titular California town, back in 2010, it was met with mild interest but middling reviews. Having read the collection, I can identify with critics who felt that Franco’s grasp of evocative language and description was exciting but his plots lacked all but the most basic of substance. Hopefully, Gia Coppola’s upcoming film adaptation, simply called Palo Alto, will keep the intriguing set-ups but do more with them than Franco did.
The first full trailer for the film hit earlier this week, and I’m not entirely sure what to make of it. A few of the characters showcased look familiar, but it’s clear that Coppola (granddaughter of the great Francis Ford Coppola) took some liberties in penning the screenplay.

Christian Madsen and Ben Lloyd-Hughes admit they had some nerves about showing up to the set of Divergent, which was the biggest movie either actor had ever worked on before. We sat down with the costars to talk about how those nerves actually came in handy once they got to work and why they love to encounter "dude" fans of the books and film. Divergent is in theaters now.

.Divergent. is one of the most anticipated movies this year but is it worth the hype? Based on the popular novel by Veronica Roth, .Divergent. stars Shailene Woodley as Tris, a teenager in a dystopian Chicago future who must choose a faction . is she Amity, Candor, Abnegation, Erudite, or Dauntless?
Joining Woodley in this action-adventure from director Neil Burger is Theo James as Four, the Dauntless trainer. Ansel Elgort, Ray Stevenson, Kate Winslet, Zoe Kravitz, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer, Jai Courtney, Miles Teller, Ben Lamb, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Christian Madsen, Tony Goldwyn, and Ashley Judd complete the cast.
So is .Divergent. better or as good as its young adult adaptation sister, .The Hunger Games?. Find out in my review below:...

Divergent may very well feature the best looking cast of all time. Seriously, everybody in this flick is either gorgeous, super pretty or downright handsome. And thankfully they are all pretty strong actors as well. Ben Lloyd-Hughes and Christian Madsen are certainly no exception and much like the rest of the cast, they were shockingly nice. This fresh faced group of actors are about to find themselves at the center of what could possibly be a fan firestorm with the new film. When I sat...

Somewhere between "The Hunger Games" and "Twilight" lies "Divergent," Neil Burger's adaptation of Veronica Roth's novel, and while I think there are some weird issues with the film, there are enough things it does right that I think it's a pretty safe bet we'll see Roth's entire series play out on film in the next few years. At what point are we going to stop with the weird non-descriptive "Young Adult" label for these movies? What's wrong with the genre labels that already existed? "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent" strike me as similar in many ways, but "young adult" doesn't suggest anything about what you'll actually see in the film. They're science-fiction films with young casts. They create alternate worlds or alternate histories, and they are more than willing to reach for the big metaphor. Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor are the credited writers on the film, and...

Thirty amazing pictures for Divergent starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James await you this morning. So many great shots from the film with all your most beloved characters, but my favorite is author of the book, Veronica Roth, dressed for her Dauntless cameo (fourth row, center and fifth row, left). Once you’ve sifted through all of those, check out the clip below where Eric (Jai Courtney) throws Christina (Zoe Kravitz) into the chasm.
