Under a starry western sky last weekend, Park City Song Summit founder Ben Anderson stood onstage and held court in front of an audience of creatives.
“We’re going to change the legacy and culture of music on this mountain,” Anderson howled into the evening chill, his voice echoing far and wide into the surrounding high-desert peaks of Utah. Then he dove headlong into a rendition of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”
Ivan Neville, Eric Krasno, and Anders Osborne all joined Anderson for the tribute, along with a slew of...

Two years ago, Todd Snider returned to his troubadour ways on Cash Cabin Sessions Vol. 3. It was his first album full of the type of sardonic Nashville hippie storytelling Snider’s best known for (and has long mastered) since 2012’s post-Occupy opus Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables. After a year of isolation, devastation and loss of close friends, Snider is back with First Agnostic Church of Hope and Wonder, an outgrowth of the loose livestream performances he’s has been offering in quarantine over the past year.

Todd Snider’s live shows are unparalleled experiences. The folk singer delivers hilarious, heartbreaking songs about his life, punctuating them with stories that can stretch as long as 18 minutes — about everything from the time he joined a Memphis cover band called K.K. Rider to the time he took mushrooms and immediately quit his high-school football team. “When people on the plane ask me what I do,” says Snider, “I say, ‘Pretty much just like “Alice’s Restaurant.”‘ I just talk. It’s a nervous tick.”

The Recording Academy’s “In Memoriam” section, which traditionally runs towards the end of the Grammy Awards ceremony and honors those in the music industry who died in the previous year, is bound to displease many — as the internet’s ire proves annually. Omissions are to blame: some due to time constraints, others to very recent circumstances, but more than anything, our musician heroes are reaching that certain age, may they all rest in peace.
This year’s batch omitted some alternative faves, rap legends and one of rock’s most renowned lyricists. Among the missing were Grateful Dead songwriter Robert Hunter along with Silver Jews’ David Berman, notorious Geto Boy Mc Bushwick Bill, cult singer Scott Walker, Prodigy singer Keith Flint, Talk Talk frontman Mark Hollis, The English Beat/General Public vocalist Ranking Roger, influential guitarist Neal Casal and Little Feat’s Paul Barrere.

In 2009, Anders Osborne found himself at rock bottom. He was bankrupt, his house was in foreclosure, his wife had kicked him out, and he couldn’t see his two young kids. His livelihood was playing gigs, but he couldn’t even do that — he’d often show up too drunk or high to perform. “For close to a year, I’d [either] try to find a friend’s couch to sleep on [or] I lived in the park,” says Osborne, a New Orleans-based singer-songwriter who’s collaborated with everyone from Phil Lesh to Tim McGraw.

When Austin Jenckes was just a teenager, his father committed suicide. Naturally, it was a tragedy that has shaped the Washington State songwriter’s life and informed his music. But the loss also turned Jenckes into a passionate proponent of mental health awareness. On December 2nd, he’ll host a benefit concert in Nashville to support the cause.
“My dad died when I was 16. He struggled with depression; he took his own life. He was everything that I looked at as what was cool,” says Jenckes. “When he died, I...

Neal Casal performed a blistering guitar solo with his band Circles Around the Sun at Virginia’s Lockn’ Festival last weekend. It was one of the roots guitarist’s final performances before his untimely death at the age of 50, which was announced on his Facebook page Tuesday morning.
The solo in the clip above clocks in at just over four minutes, with Casal settling into a swampy, jam band funk and mesmerizing the crowd with his six-string skills as a disco ball spins and the crowd sways back and forth.

While he may not have had the name recognition of some of the artists with whom he played, guitarist Neal Casal was revered across all music genres. He recorded with country stars Willie Nelson and Shooter Jennings, played slippery leads as a member of Ryan Adams’ Cardinals, advanced the blues-jam scene with Chris Robinson Brotherhood, and even bolstered Southern rock in Blackfoot with Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Rickey Medlocke.
As such, news of his death at 50 on Tuesday morning was met with shock, especially as it comes just days after his...

The annual Tibet House benefit is a New York City musical tradition, always well-curated by composer and downtown arts ambassador emeritus Philip Glass. The organization’s mission is to preserve, protect, promote and advance Tibetan culture — and with its focus on peace (inner and outer), meditation, healing and happiness, that mission couldn’t be more timely. So the event, billed as the 32nd annual (give or take a few; no one seems to recall exactly), was especially welcome this year. And as usual, the music captured the spirit of the moment.

"It's funny, I was in Nashville yesterday and the day before, and I was hanging with Dierks Bentley there, and he was saying, 'You gotta come out on the tour and sing one here and there.' That's always a fun possibility," he told MTV News. "We'll see what happens, but no plans for any solo album."
