It’s 2003 and Jay-Z is planning a farewell concert at Madison Square Garden to celebrate his retirement from music.
But his bass player is unavailable. Adam Blackstone, a jack-of-all-trades who plays bass, drums, piano, organ, tuba and sousaphone — and is also a songwriter, producer, composer and everything else under the musical sun — is more than ready to step in.
Twenty years later, Blackstone, now 40, is still working closely with Jay-Z; both are Emmy winners for last year’s hip-hop-heavy Super Bowl halftime show. And the musician who has helped everyone from Rihanna to Justin Timberlake shine is stepping into his own limelight.
Rihanna performed during the Super Bowl Lvii halftime show in February.
After winning an Emmy in 2022 for music direction, Blackstone is nominated again. This time, however, he’s a double nominee. Not only is he competing for his work on Rihanna’s explosive Super Bowl performance (a nom...

The R&B singer Guordan Banks works with the precision of a surgeon on his new single “Can’t Keep Runnin:'” He dissects the Gap Band’s great ballad “Yearning for Your Love,” locates the sterling melodies in the track’s core, and transplants them into a mid-tempo groove.
It’s a small change, but — when paired with a thunking 808 beat and a pointy guitar — it has a big impact. While the original “Yearning for Your Love” was shimmery and flirtatious, “Can’t Keep Runnin'” is pushy, verging on frustrated.

Fox hasn’t officially confirmed it, but sources close to American Idol are buzzing that Season 12 Top 4 week will be a two-theme kind of party: One-Hit Wonders and Contestant’s Choice.
The former — which topped an At&T “fan’s choice” vote — has the potential to be fantastic, as long as producers don’t try to force the contestants toward novelty hits or tired old songs that have been covered on Idol a million times before (and simply happen to qualify under the one-hit wonder header).

New Orleans -- The Essence Music Festival kicked off Thursday with events geared for the young.
Organizers planned to hold talks at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center on crime, education and other issues affecting today's youth as a prelude to teen musical acts scheduled to hit the Superdome stage later in the evening.
Essence is one of the premiere music festivals celebrating black culture and music. It's been held every Independence Day weekend since its inception in 1995, when it marked the 25th anniversary of Essence magazine.
As in years past, the festival tackles themes of importance to African Americans, such as education and the upcoming presidential election. But above all, Essence is a celebration of music.
Opening day was to be all about recognizing newcomers to the music scene, including the Disney Channel's Coco Jones, rapper Diggy Simmons, the Omg Girlz, Roshon Fegan, Katlyn Nichol, Square Off and New...

It looks like Mo’nique is pulling out all the stops for her new late night show on Black Entertainment Television.
As we previously reported, the Queen of Comedy will headline The Mo’Nique Show, a late night talk show premiering October 5th as part of Bet’s new fall lineup.
Last week, word trickled down on some of the guests she is planning on having, and last week’s big bomb shell was news of an entire show dedicated to Arsenio Hall, and his years as a late night host.
Today, our sources have discovered that she is stepping up to the plate to hit another home run. This time, Mo’Nique has strategically landed Morris Chestnut and David E. Talbert just in time as they are launching the media campaign for the DVD release of Talbert’s blockbuster play Love In The Nick of Tyme. It seems Chestnut...
