Sejal Pachisia
- Writer
Sejal is a character-driven drama writer who was raised in Bangalore on Karan Johar and Quentin Tarantino movies. While Sejal immigrated to the United States over a decade ago, her screenwriting career took off in India in 2019 when her original feature script, On the Boundary won first place in a major national competition. On the boundary, about a teenager's struggle with his sexuality, was inspired by her own coming out story (featured on NPR's The Moth). Sejal went on to write on the popular Netflix India vampire fantasy series, Tooth Pari, which became the most streamed Indian series across platforms in April 2023. She wrote two episodes out of the eight-episode season. Subsequently, Sejal was a Story Editor on season two of Amazon Prime's Bandish Bandits (slated to release fall 2024). In addition to writing two more episodes on Bandish Bandits, Sejal was also the on-set writer for a month, overseeing script rewrites and providing feedback to the director. Most recently, Tantra Productions hired Sejal to write the TV adaptation of The Pataala Prophecy, a book series that marries magic and Hindu mythology.
Sejal's writing style can be summarized as: grounded characters, heightened worlds. With deep roots in India and a future in America, she writes characters who straddle multiple identities and must fight to find a sense of belonging. Sejal often explores dark themes in her writing, informed by her past life working at healthcare startups in Silicon Valley, volunteering at a suicide helpline, and teaching prisoners at San Quentin Penitentiary. In her free time, Sejal enjoys playing pickleball, reading the plays of Martin McDonagh, and embarrassing herself in Swing Dance classes.
