“High Heat” is a hoot. Though it may sound in synopsis like standard-issue genre fare suitable for quick-serve consumption on digital and streaming platforms, this satisfying mashup of crime thriller and dark comedy plays almost like a wink-and-a-nod sendup of such cookie-cutter time-killers. Indeed, director Zach Golden and scripter James Pedersen go so far as to deliberately emphasize the telltale sign of a budget-cramped indie production — almost all of the action unfolds in only two settings, a restaurant and a parking garage — while lacing clichés and conventions with self-aware wit and sass in a briskly paced package. Better still, it appears that everyone on-screen was let in on the joke — but nobody takes that knowledge as license to break character or even dent the fourth wall.

“Words are weapons in the world’s most brutal lyrical sport.” That’s from the promo description of Bodied, the first ever fiction feature film about battle rap. The surely common question, “What the hell is battle rap?” gets a bracing answer within minutes of the film’s opening. The “lyrical sport” consists of two (or sometimes teams of two) rappers, with no music to back them, competing against each other to see who can be more virtuosic with their threats and/or insults.Helmed by music video director Joseph Kahn, Bodied is a wild, jacked-up trip—disjunctive but somehow graceful. Kahn and his team jump across space, use slow- and fast-motion, push in on characters and switch perspectives with a mixture of finesse and aggression that’s entirely fitting for the story material. So much rap—and especially this kind of it—is about refined style applied to unrefined material,...

There’s a moment near the beginning of Bodied, Joseph Kahn’s brittle battering ram of a battle-rap comedy, where a character explains the difference between using lines and bars. You get off a handful of good lines when you’re facing an opponent in a freestyle battle, just two people in a ring armed with nothing but envious vocabularies and beaucoup insults … you can impress folks. They know you have some skills. But you come up with some kick-ass bars — what’s loosely categorized here as an interlocking, layered series of bap-bap-bap verbal jabs,...

I’m going to be trying something a little bit new today, as an experiment. For those of you who don’t know, I’m now a Rotten Tomatoes certified critic, so I want to attempt to give more of what I see a write up, in order for it to show up there. So, for a busy week like this, I decided to lump three films into one long post. It’s essentially a trio of slightly shorter articles in one shot. Perhaps it’ll be a recurring thing. We’ll see. For this inaugural attempt, the three movies that open this week are the satire Bodied, the family flick The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, and the long lost Orson Welles curiosity The Other Side of the Wind. Here goes nothing… — *Bodied* It’s incredibly satisfying to see a satire really go for broke. Too often, the razor is on the dull side.

Neon and YouTube Originals have released the first official trailer for “Bodied,” the latest feature film from acclaimed music video director Joseph Kahn. The movie has been praised a cross between “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “8 Mile,” and with Eminem as an executive producer, “Bodied” has the bona fides to earn the comparison. Kahn has directed music videos for a wide array of artists, from Lady Gaga to Taylor to Swift, to Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent. “Bodied” is Kahn’s third narrative feature; he is best known for 2011’s teen slasher comedy “Detention.”
Set in Oakland’s underground rap battle scene, “Bodied” features former Disney Channel star Calum Worthy as a progressive grad student who finds himself unexpectedly skilled at rhyming. “Bodied” also stars Jackie Long (“The Real Husbands of Hollywood”) and hip hop radio personality Charlamagne Tha God.

There have been plenty of movies featured at Frightfest that aren’t exactly ‘horror’ movies. They are featured for several reasons. Be it the director is more well known for genre movies or the movie is so good that it’s too good an opportunity to miss by not having it at the festival. With Joseph Khan’s Bodied, both of those reasons can apply. His previous film Detention was a comedy horror and ,as for the second part of my sentence, I’ll go into more details below but Bodied is a fantastic film!

Bodied is the sort of film that would give Walt Disney a heart attack. It’s nasty, close-to-the-bone, doesn’t really have a genre (at a push you could probably argue that it’s an underdog comedy but in some ways it’s also kind of the opposite too) and worst of all, it’s about battle rap. Not the 8 Mile/Lose Yourself, drop-the-mic-style battle rap either. Even though, rather ironically, Eminem is listed as a producer, there’s nothing commercial about the rapping here at all. If James Corden tried to rip-off the bars these real-world artists were “spitting”, he’d end up in prison.
But the very fact that Bodied can’t be put in a box and easily sold is by far its strongest feature; Joseph Kahn’s self-funded, ludicrously ahead-of-itself third feature is an absolute treat on all fronts. A scathing satire on liberal self-shaming, contemporary racial and political stereotypes,...

From the moment Bodied opens with a promotional advert for the Killafornia Battle League (in which we’re *immediately* told to “suck a dick!”) to the very last insert-rap-lyric-here outro line, director Joseph Kahn and co-writer Alex Larsen assassinate political correctness with pop-culture lyricisms and heat-seeking regard. Ninjas of the rapped word in their ranks, racial appropriation and misrepresented social justice tenacity in their crosshairs. We no longer can share a single thought without offending someone, somewhere, who wants to score uncashable “woke points” – and Kahn wants to make their fragile little minds explode. This is two straight hours of offensive battle rap bars, non-stop hilarity, layered introspection and the most stylized, take-no-prisoners commentary on what a black-and-white minefield our behavioral ethics have become.
That, and it’s the most motherflippin’ fun you’ll have in a theater of any kind this year, the next, and probably many to come.

Dear Danny,We blinked, and ten days passed. How swiftly time goes by when in festival mode, just floating on films and friends. It’s not until I’m on the way home, writing my final dispatch in between airport terminals, that I realize how tremendously exhausted I am. A good time, then, to be reflecting on Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri, quite the strong cup of black coffee. As a non-fan of In Bruges (2008) and Seven Psychopaths (2012), I was pleasantly surprised by the grim comic force of Martin McDonagh’s morality tale, a Southern Gothic hamlet pushed through the filter of British Catholic guilt. The eponymous placards are positioned on a dilapidated road and painted red with a confrontational query, part of the crusade waged by the grieving Mildred (Frances McDormand) against the local lawmakers who’ve failed to locate the man behind her daughter’s rape and murder.

This writer will admit that he joked to a friend recently about music video director Joseph Kahn’s slow feature film output over the last 13 years as almost making him the new Terrence Malick. While don’t take that as anything more than a goof, each of his three features do represent a very specific point in time that’s bound to be dated within a short period. His first feature Torque arrived in the middle of the Neal Moritz renaissance and was Kahn’s stealth attempt to smuggle a parody of The Fast and The Furious beer commercial aesthetic within an actual Fast and Furious knock-off. The second, Detention, came at the dawn of social media dominance, as obnoxious and scatterbrained a millennial anthem one could hope for.
Now arrives the third feature, Bodied, coming at the beginning of “Trump’s America,” and it is, if anything, a middle-finger...

If Eminem got a PhD in English without sacrificing his hip-hop talent, he might have turned out something like Adam (Calum Worthy), the scrawny white hero of Joseph Kahn’s “Bodied.” Kahn’s long-awaited follow-up to his snarky teen slasher comedy “Detention” is a hyper-stylized rap satire that plays out like Scott Pilgrim stumbling into “8 Mile” and stealing the spotlight. Set in an assaultive world of underground rap battles in which Adam finds himself unexpectedly talented, “Bodied” delivers the provocative goods at an alarming rate, and boasts Eminem as an executive producer as if to embolden its point.
With Adam learning to embrace racist and misogynist one-liners in his rise to hip-hop stardom, the movie might seem too crude for its own good, but “Bodied” — directed by an Asian American and largely starring people of color — has been designed to interrogate the very reaction provoked by its existence. It may be overlong and uneven,...

Coming off one of the best films of last year, Tangerine, director Sean Baker is going from iPhone to 35mm for his next feature, The Florida Project. We spoke with him about the drama and now it’s recently gone into production, with Willem Dafoe spotted on set. Currently shooting in Orlando, it follows a six-year-old and her group of friends during summer break as they adventure and soar on youth while their parents handle real-life problems. Although there are no details on his role, one could assume Dafoe will play one of these parents. [Page Six]

Last year, producer Adi Shankar and director Joseph Kahn took nostalgia to a whole new level with the Power/Rangers short film. The short was a whole new (bootlegged) take on the property. It was unnecessarily dark and gritty in the best way possible, and it took the characters we knew and loved and twisted them in new ways that would never fly in a legit Power Rangers film.
TheWrap is now reporting that Shankar and Kahn are re-teaming for a feature-length film entitled Bodied. Bodied is being called a racial relations satire, and the story was developed by Kahn and champion battle rapper Alex "Kid Twist" Larsen.
Principal photography is already underway on the project, but details regarding the plot are rather scarce. All the outlet was able to report is that the film "tackles race relations using the world of hip-hop rap battles as an entry point."

If you're not seeing yourself on screen (Broadcast TV and at the movie theater), the burden is on you to create those images of yourself that you want to see, especially now that the tools of creation and distribution have become much more accessible. An update & adjustment to the indie drama Blame It On The Hustle, a project highlighted on this site earlier this week. First, I'm told that the story actually isn't based on the Black Mafia Family, as previously reported, but rather on "the rise and fall of the first urban crime family "The Hit Boyz" in present day New York City." Secondly, the project is an independent film produced by Blame It On The Hustle LLC. Third, the starring cast is as we previously reported: Dmx, Ving Rhames and Laila Odom; although we can now confirm that Jackie Long, Mekhi Phifer, and Michael Imperioli, are also attached. ...
