Kolkata, April 29 (Ians) Kolkata Knight Riders had entered Saturday’s match against Gujarat Titans in Ipl 2023 at Eden Gardens on the back of an optimistic 21-run victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
But all of that optimism evaporated completely as they lost to Gujarat by seven wickets. With the bat, Rahmanullah Gurbaz slammed a scintillating 39-ball 81 and Andre Russell smashed a 19-ball 34.
Apart from the duo collectively scoring 115 runs off 58 balls, no other Kolkata batter stepped up as they made only 179/7, something which captain Nitish Rana rued after the defeat.
“I think we were 20-25 runs short. If we keep dropping catches against big teams, I do not think the result will be any different. No one apart from Gurbaz and Russell got going. There were not enough partnerships and had we had a partnership of 40-50 runs, the score could have been more,...

Post the play starting after 45 minutes of rain delay, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, coming in for an injured Jason Roy, slammed a scintillating 39-ball 81, laced with five fours and seven sixes. But apart from Andre Russell, the birthday boy, smashing a 19-ball 34, with two fours and three sixes, no other batter stepped up as Kolkata made 179/7.

At 98/3 in 12 overs, Gujarat were in trouble and chasing 180 seemed far-fetched. With the required run-rate around 12, Miller began by cutting Varun Chakaravarthy through extra cover for four, followed by smacking Suyash Sharma for clean sixes over long-off and long-on. Shankar then cut Suyash through point as 18 runs came off the 15th over.

An official update from the tournament said no overs will be lost from Saturday’s game, which was delayed due to wet outfield. Around 3:17pm, the sun began to shine its way through the clouds with the covers beginning to be removed. Though the pitch and square was uncovered, broadcast visuals showed some areas of the ground were still having the covers on, in anticipation of more rain, with the players doing some warm-ups near the dugout.

Kolkata, April 29 (Ians) Ahead of their clash against Gujarat Titans in Ipl 2023, Kolkata Knight Riders head coach Chandrakant Pandit stated that it is very crucial for his team to win rest of their six matches in the tournament to stand a chance of qualifying for the playoffs.
“The destination is very far for us in this season. We still have six matches and it is important that we win all six of these matches. I won’t say it is difficult but we have to pull up our socks and fight till the last match,” he said in a pre-match chat with the broadcasters.
Big-hitting all-rounder Andre Russell turns 35 on Saturday, but hasn’t produced any impactful performance yet. Pandit thinks they are waiting for the right moment to come for Russell to showcase his skills and come good.

Despite some strong individual performances in the absence of some of their main players, both Kolkata and Mumbai have six points each, and are placed seventh and eighth respectively on the points table.
Former India leg-spinner Anil Kumble, who was the head coach of Punjab Kings last year, believes the task for the two teams is a challenging one, but it is also something which is not impossible.
"I have been a part of teams which have been in the second half of the points table through the half-way stage. It’s not easy to catch up. But having said that, it’s not impossible either. So, at this stage of the tournament, you have to sort of refresh and reset and then see what is your best possible playing eleven.

Saint Lucia, Sep 8 (Ians) The Barbados Royals secured their third successive victory of the 2022 Hero Caribbean Premier League (Cpl) season with a resounding win over Trinbago Knight Riders by 80 runs following the application of the Duckworth Lewis system as the match was hit by rain.
The Knight Riders won the toss and chose to field. However, a brilliant opening stand of 85 runs between Kyle Mayers (52) and Quinton De Kock (44) built the platform for Barbados Royals to run up 194 for 4 in 20 overs. The Powerplay produced 67 runs. Later David Miller scored a whirlwind 60 runs from just 36 balls.
In a chase affected by rain, Knight Riders suffered a batting collapse. They lost six wickets in the Powerplay before rain brought a premature end to proceedings with the score at 51-7 after 8 overs. The Royals were adjudged winners by 80 runs.

USA set to give massive push to T20 cricket; Major League Cricket secures 100m pounds for tournament
London, Sep 6 (Ians) England’s former right-arm pace bowler and a member of the 2019 World Cup-winning team, Liam Plunkett, has predicted an ‘explosion’ of T20 cricket in the United States, and revealed that more than 100 million pound sterling in funding from private investors such as tech giants Microsoft and Adobe has been secured for Major League Cricket (Mlc).
Plunkett, 37, recently signed a three-year deal with The Philadelphians in Minor League Cricket (MiLC) in the 2022 edition. MiLC is the feeder to Mlc.
“It’s go big or go home. That is how they do stuff in America. And with the money that is behind this, it is going to be massive. I think it will explode,” Plunkett, who has played 89 ODIs and 22 T20Is for England, was quoted as saying by Daily Mail on Tuesday.
The tall pacer added the new professional T20 league will certainly attract top players from across the world including English stars.
