HBO’s Rome ran for only 22 episodes. Divided over two seasons, the show premiered in 2005 and concluded in 2007. Yet despite its brevity, the original HBO epic left an indelible legacy—and some unfinished business.
Reports of a possible Rome movie continuing the narrative of the series sprung up shortly after its finale aired in March 2007. By itself that episode seemed to offer plenty of finality, with the character of Octavian (Simon Woods) assuming the title of “First Citizen of Rome” (emperor), and Atia (Polly Walker) taking pride in her son’s triumph, even as she quietly mourned the death of Marc Antony (James Purefoy). Even Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson) got some kind of peace when he lied to the newly crowned emperor, his former friend, about Cleopatra’s son Caesarion. Pullo claimed the boy was dead, yet Pullo was raising the lad as his own. It thus also left open-ended...

New music from an unexpected source, a problem with tickets to a Black Keys show, and technology bringing us a mobile karaoke feature and the return of high-fidelity to streaming services were some of the highlights of the week.
We also saw yet another superstar depart the big stage, as Ric Ocasek of The Cars died in his Manhattan home, leaving behind an impressive legacy.
This week in music:
How Old Was Ric? Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and the mastermind behind The Cars died last Sunday. Ric Ocasek leaves behind a considerable catalog of great music and one mysterious question – how old was he? Some obits said age 70, others 75. There’s considerable differences of opinion among various media, but extensive research by the New York Times finally pegged him as 75 years old at the time of death.
Music Center Problems: It was not a good month at the Music Center.

The Flying Monkey weighs in on all those Jake Gyllenhaal and Glee rumors, whether oral sex is "safer sex," and if it's okay to "de-gay" a resume in a time of economic crisis!
Have a question about gay male entertainment or life? Contact me here (and be sure and include your city and state and/or country!)
Q: Why do people keep insisting that Jake Gyllenhaal is gay? Is it because of Brokeback Mountain? Certain blogs out there label actors as "gay" as if they were talking about their eye color, but isn't the goal to keep everyone out of everybody else's bedroom, actor or no actor? I never understood how people can't see that labeling someone as gay (who isn't) even if you’re gay yourself is homophobic and harmful. Basically you're proving that there is something wrong with being gay by using it as a weapon. – Cassie, Austin,...

Chicago – Just in time for holiday shopping, HBO has released both seasons of the epic “Rome” in one gorgeously-packaged Blu-Ray set with all 22 episodes and bonus material including audio commentaries and behind-the-scenes featurettes. Whatever you may think of the show, “Rome” was one of the most beautifully designed programs of the decade and a perfect fit for 1080p.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
The winner of seven Emmy Awards takes place four hundred years after the founding of the Republic. Rome is brought vividly to life as an allegory for power struggles in any era. In the show, the days of shared power has come to an end and everyone is fighting for their part of the new structure - it’s the perfect backdrop for betrayal, excess, and corruption.
Blending historical figures like Julius Caesar, Marc Antony, and Cleopatra with their own narratives, “Rome” was a gorgeous blend of style and substance.
