It’s time for another episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and with this one we’re looking back at director Chan-wook Park’s 2003 South Korean film Oldboy (watch it Here) – a movie that has not only been ranked on lists of the Greatest Films Ever Made, but has also had people looking at hammers differently for over twenty years now. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above.
Written by Park with Jo-yun Hwang and Jun-hyung Lim, Oldboy is a loose adaptation of the Japanese manga of the same name. The film has the following synopsis: Dae-Su is an obnoxious drunk bailed from the police station yet again by a friend. However, he’s abducted from the street and wakes up in a cell, where he remains for the next 15 years, drugged unconscious when human contact is unavoidable, otherwise with only the television as company.

Park Chan-wook's revenge thriller "Oldboy" celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. In commemoration, the film was remastered and theatrically distributed this past August by Neon. If you missed this beautiful restoration in theaters, fear not: Neon has announced it is releasing a limited edition 4K Blu-ray of "Oldboy," scheduled for release on December 12, 2023.
"Oldboy" is based on a manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi. The film adaptation transposes the setting from Japan to South Korea, but retains the core premise. Boorish businessman Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is abducted and held in a locked room for 15 years. Freed one day out of the blue, Oh Dae-su makes it his mission to find out who imprisoned him -- and why. But by the end of his journey, he wishes that he'd stayed locked up.

Twenty years later, Park Chan-wook’s shocking thriller “Oldboy” continues to enthrall audiences across the globe. Neon’s recent 20th-anniversary theatrical re-release of the film proved to be a box-office hit, bringing in crowds of viewers ranging from long-time admirers to newcomers seeing it for the first time. Based on the manga of the same name written by Garon Tsuchiya and illustrated by Nobuaki Minegishi, the feature would help pave the way for a new generation of live-action manga adaptations and further help showcase South Korean cinema internationally. An American remake was released in 2013 by director Spike Lee but with far less successful results.

Based on a Japanese manga by Garon Tsuchiya Nobuaki Minegishi, Park Chan-wook's 2003 film "Oldboy" is a sensational, harrowing, violent, exhilarating opera of sin, retribution, and tragic twists worthy of Shakespeare. Tapping into a particularly Korean sense of social anxiety, it explores experiences of free-floating guilt and the sense that one might be punished at any moment for a slight you didn't know you committed. It's a panic attack of a film that swings for the walls -- literally, with a hammer -- and thwacks a few skulls in the process. Aggressive, enormous, bloody, and blunt, "Oldboy" may be one of the best films of its decade.
In 2003, Park's film -- the second part of what the filmmaker called a Vengeance Trilogy -- received a lot of attention. It won the Grand Prix at Cannes and dozens of other film awards besides. Quentin Tarantino talked it up immensely, and critics gushed.

Neon is celebrating Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy 20th anniversary in a massive way. Yesterday brought an official poster teasing the upcoming restoration of the jaw-dropping revenge thriller. Today brings the trailer and a release date.
A Greek tragedy by way of a visceral revenge thriller, Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy will keep you guessing at every turn. And right from the get-go, too. Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is kidnapped on the night of his daughter’s fourth birthday and wakes up imprisoned, sealed in a hotel room. He learns his wife has been murdered, and he’s been framed for her death. Cut to 15 years later, Oh Dae-su is suddenly freed and sent on a quest to find his captor. That barely, and I emphasize barely, sets up the insanity that follows.

Acknowledged for making television documentaries, producer and director Han Sun-hee made this almost two-hour film specifically for the Blu-ray release of Chan Park-wook’s “Oldboy” by Plain Archive International, a South Korean Blu-ray producing company. Apparently, it also premiered at the 17th Jeonju International Film Festival held in South Korea in 2016.
This rather straightforward but engrossing documentary starts off with the camera following actor Oh Kwang-rok (the suicide man with the white dog from the film) as he walks towards the building where they filmed the roof top scene. It has been over ten years and he recalls that they could not film that day because the sky was too grey and foggy. Besides, some of the high-rise apartments that surround the site now were of course not there during filming. Neon has acquired North American and UK rights to the horror-drama Handling the Undead, marking the narrative feature debut of Thea Hvistendahl, who previously directed the documentary Adjø Montebello and several short films, including the SXSW Grand Jury Award-nominated Virgins4lyfe. The project reteams the distributor with Renate Reinsve and Anders Danielsen Lie, who starred in its Oscar-nominated romantic drama The Worst Person in the World, directed by Joachim Trier.
Handling the Undead picks up on an abnormally hot summer day in Oslo, as a strange electric field surrounds the city, with a collective migraine spreading across town. TVs, lightbulbs and electronics go haywire, the chaos reaching a debilitating crescendo when suddenly, it’s over.
The film currently in production is based on the novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, the renowned writer of bestselling horror novels and the screenplays Border and Let the Right One In, who co-wrote the script with Hvistendahl.

Neon has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to Park Chan-wook’s cult action classic “Oldboy” and will re-release it theatrically in U.S. theaters ahead of the film’s 20th anniversary next year.
“Oldboy” is Chan-wook’s famously brutal and stylized action and revenge story about a man finally released 15 years after being kidnapped and imprisoned, only to find that he must find his captor within five days. The film is famous for its punishing fight scene through a narrow corridor in which the protagonist fights off a crowded room full of thugs with a hammer and with a knife in his back, not to mention its shocking twist ending.
Neon has yet to disclose any specific release plans for “Oldboy,” but the film has been restored and remastered in 4K Hdr as supervised by Chan-wook.

It is always reinvigorating to find films that deal with the supernatural and particularly the concept of the ghost in a unique way, in a category that occasionally seems to have surpassed the borders of being preterit even. Yu Eun-jeong’s debut feature effort does exactly that by giving a distinctively social essence to the concept, in a film that won the Audience Award in Bifan.
“Ghost Walk” is screening as part of Women Direct. Korean Indies! – Korean Women Independent Film Series at the Hong Kong Arts Centre
The story begins with a note rather different than the rest of the film, as we watch Hye-jeong strolling in the night with a man, before she turns down his love confession, with a rather pragmatist statement about not having any interest in relationships, because they are time consuming. Thus, a portrait of a depressed woman begins to take shape, although it...

The list is reported to include Cannes-awarded director Park Chan-wook (Old Boy) and top stars such as Song Kang-ho (Snowpiercer), who was made a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) last year.
Korean daily newspaper Hankook Ilbo broke the news Wednesday (October 12) that it had obtained the 100-page document, listing a total of 9,473 artists. Seol Kyung-gu and Ko Soo are teaming for upcoming thriller Lucid Dream. From first-time director Kim Joon-sung, the film will also star Kang Hye-jung. The story, if I understood it correctly, deals with a father who goes searching for his kidnapped child. He enlists the help of people who can find clues through lucid dreams. The premise of Lucid Dream sounds fun but if Seol is playing the father of the victim, that would be the umpteenth time he's tackled the same character. He's excellent in that kind of role, but after Voice of a Murderer (2007), Troubleshooter (2010), No Mercy (2010) and Hope (2013), he's in danger of typecasting himself within very narrow parameters. We will next see Seol again in the war film...

Hovering around the twenty-one to twenty-four feature film mark with at least a quarter of those films belonging to first time filmmakers, the Quinzaine des Realisateurs (a.k.a Directors’ Fortnight) has in the past couple of years, counted on a healthy supply of French, Spanish and Belgium produced film items, and has been geared towards the offbeat genre items as with last year’s edition curated by Edouard Waintrop and co. To be unveiled on the 22nd, as we attempted with our Critics’ Week predix, Blake Williams, Nicholas Bell and I (Eric Lavallee) are thinking out loud and hedging our bets on what the section might look like or what the programmers might be looking at for 2014. Here is our predictions overview:

Six years after presenting Vinyan at the Venice Film Festival, Fabrice Du Welz finally returns with potentially not one, but a pair of works for the ’14 campaign.

With Mandate Pictures’ planned remake of Park Chan-Wook’s “Oldboy” in full chugging along mode, Josh Brolin in the lead and Spike Lee directing, and even Christian Bale being pursued for the villain role, the only question left is who will play the female lead? Twitch has your answer: Rooney Mara. Mara, who recently starred in David Fincher’s remake of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, is said to be “targeted” by the Mandate folks for the female lead in “Oldboy”. That role would be Mi-do (renamed Marie for the American version), and was originally played by actress Hye-jeong Kang. Besides acting as a love interest for the film’s unjustly imprisoned hero, Mi-do also figures prominently into the movie’s major Big Reveal at the end of the film. In “Oldboy” (I still expect them to change the title eventually), Brolin would star as a man who is...

Josh Brolin has been cast as the lead in Spike Lee‘s Oldboy (2012) remake. The original (Oldeuboi) was directed by Chan-wook Park in 2003 and starred Min-sik Choi, Ji-tae Yu, and Hye-jeong Kang. Oldboy‘s plot synopsis: “The story centers on a man who is kidnapped on his daughter’s birthday and held for 15 years in solitary confinement without explanation. He is eventually released and sets out on a path to take revenge on those who destroyed his life.”
I was against this being remade the moment I heard it was happening. As soon as I finished watching Oldboy for the first time in 2003, I knew it was a classic from the excellent camera work, the script, and the acting. In addition, th film’s ending was a hammer to the senses. I was not the only person that felt that way. Oldboy is probably one of the best revenge films...

Add another Korean actor to the list of those joining Hollywood. After Rain, Lee Byung-Heon, Kim Yoon-Jin, Song Hye-Gyo, Jeon Ji-Hyun, Gu Hye-Seon and Co., Kang Hye-Jung of 올드보이 (Oldboy) and 웰컴 투 동막골 (Welcome to Dongmakgol) will make her Hollywood debut in the rom-com Wedding Palace, alongside Korean-American actor Brian Tee. The film tells the story of an an American man and a Korean woman dating, overcoming their cultural differences and eventually marrying, and marks the debut of Korean American Christine Yu, who had been mostly writing screenplays in Hollywood up to now, including the TV series Afro Samurai. Film will be produced by Tee himself, through his company Tu Productions, and will start shooting from September in L.A., with a week of location shooting in Korea. Kang’s dialogue will be all in English, but the character’s broken English will be an interesting challenge to handle (unless,...
