Former Shudder chief Craig Engler left the streaming service a couple months ago, shortly after overseeing the release of the horror film Skinamarink, which was made on a budget of $15,000 and earned over $2 million during its theatrical run. Now Variety reports that Engler has teamed up with The Cartel, the production company behind Shudder’s Creepshow series, to launch Shiver Studios, “a new genre company with plans to make and finance up to 10 horror films a year”!
Variety explains that the Los Angeles-based studio will focus on a theatrical-first approach, looking to ride the recent trend of indie horror hits. The overall plan is for Shiver to follow its theatrical releases with a Tvod, SVOD, AVOD, linear and physical windowing strategy, working with partners that include both streamers and traditional distributors.
The first two films on the Shiver Studios development slate are Incident at Joshua Tree and Bloody Mary.

Creepshow producer The Cartel and former Shudder head Craig Engler have teamed up to launch Shiver Studios.
The new venture plans to finance and produce between four and 10 horror movies a year that first target theatrical releases. The Cartel produced Creepshow for AMC and Engler headed up AMC Networks’ horror-focused Shudder streamer.
“When Craig Engler approached the Cartel about partnering on a new horror studio, we jumped at the opportunity. Craig’s knowledge and relationships in the horror space and horror community are unparalleled. His expertise combined with Cartel’s production, financing and distribution infrastructure makes Shiver Studios a very exciting opportunity,” Stan Spry, co-ceo of Cartel Pictures, said in a statement on Friday.

Written by Cameron Larson, (loosely) based on the book by Jules Verne
Featuring Gina Holden, Lochlyn Munro, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Susie Abromeit, Mark Sheppard, J. D. Evermore, Edrick Browne, Caleb Michaelson and William Morgan Sheppard
One might suspect the Syfy premiere of Jules Verne’s The Mysterious Island last February was another “mockbuster” from The Asylum, timed to coincide with the theatrical release of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. But blame this one on the Syfy channel, as The Asylum wasn’t involved with this 2010 production. And that’s unfortunate, as this movie lacks any sense of fun or campy humor.
Most genre fans know how the film starts out. During The Civil War, as a group of Union prisoners, along with a reporter and a Confederate deserter, escape from their captors in a hot air balloon. A Confederate soldier, attempting to stop them, is pulled...

When you get a movie to review called Sand Sharks you can already guess what is coming. This is going to be one of those crazy shark films that use dodgy CGI and bad acting but just don’t seem to care. They don’t make these films to be good, if anything they ham it up to insane levels and just go with it. You’ll either groan or just go with it and love it. I’m one of those people that usually groan but I gave Sand Sharks a chance.
The stories for these movies are pretty barebones at best but I’d say this one actually tried to some extent, being that it stole the Jaws idea and runs with it with...

The search for the bottom of the creature feature barrel continues with “Sand Sharks”, a film which explores the long pondered philosophical question as to what would happen if sharks could in fact swim through sand. Boldly tackling this controversial issue are director Mark Atkins (also responsible for the charming “Battle of Los Angeles”) and writers Cameron Larson (“Mysterious Island”, “Alligator X”) and Joe Benkis (“Shadow People”), with an intriguing cast of television stars and vaguely familiar genre faces that includes Corin Nemec (“Supernatural”), Brooke Hogan (“Brooke Knows Best”), Gina Holden (“Saw 3D”), Julie Berman (“General Hospital”), Nick Hogan (“Hogan Knows Best”) and Vanessa Lee Evigan (“Journey To The Centre Of The Earth”). For the brave or curious, “Sand Sharks” hits region 2 DVD in January through Chelsea Films. The plot, such as it is, proudly follows the time honoured “Jaws” formula pretty much to the letter, kicking off with a...

Jose Prendes dropped us a line with updates on two new projects he's working on, and while one is more along the lines of a spaghetti western, it has one of our favorite actor/directors involved, and Jose promises it will be especially violent and bloody, so we thought we'd pass along the info to our readers.
The name of the film is A Magnificent Death from a Shattered Hand (awesome title, right?), and here's how Prendes describes it:
A Magnificent Death From A Shattered Hand tells the bloody story of a long-lost treasure and the greedy bastards out to reclaim it. Thomas Jane stars as Jonas Barnes, who embarks on a quest to find buried gold revealed to him by his father's deathbed confession. While on the trail he manages to save a young girl, Catherine, from a gang of dirty, rotten kidnappers and in the process gets mistaken...

Wow. Plagiaristic much!? Some new teaser art for yet another shark-related horror flick coming our way has arrived. The Mark Atkins helmed shark story 'Sand Sharks' has received some rather familiar looking sales art to help promote the movie. In fact it's a pretty big 'Jaws' poster rip-off effectively replacing the sea for sand. Corin Nemec and the hot Hulk daughter Brooke Hogan (below) both star in the Cameron Larson penned prehistoric shark tale. 'Saw 3D's Gina Holden, Eric Scott Woods, Vanessa Lee Evigan and Julie Berman all co-star. Time travel, ruthless pirates, erupting volcanoes, monstrously hairy swamp cannibals, a giant octopus, and Captain Nemo armed with a steampunk raygun await the characters that have crashed landed on Jules Verne's Mysterious Island in the newest adaptation of the 1874 literary classic. The only thing missing is Doug McClure.
The other week I reported on a Syfy-bound creature feature titled Xtinction: Predator. One of that film's producers, George M. Kostuch, was nice enough to send over word of his newest production: the latest feature film adaptation of Jules Verne's classic Mysterious Island.
Filmed on location in Louisiana, K2 Pictures and Leverage Entertainment present a cinematic adaptation of Jules Verne's 1874 novel "The Mysterious Island", the story begins during the American Civil War, as famine and death ravage the city of Richmond, Virginia. Five northern POWs make the decision to escape the war by hijacking a hot air balloon! Drifting through the night,...

The History Channel premiered a TV special titled "Predator X" back in 2009 unveiling the recently discovered fossils of the largest prehistoric sea monster on record: a 50-foot Pliosaur with the head of a T-Rex, the body of a giant whale, and enormous flippers.
I knew the moment I saw that special I'd being seeing a Predator X movie, most likely on Syfy, in the near future. Here it comes.
Xtinction: Predator X brings the ginormous dinosaur into the 21st century with monstrous results. Though the fossils may have been discovered beneath the polar ice caps, this no longer extinct dino calls the Louisiana swamps its home. Who can blame it? I hear the tax breaks are fantastic.
When her father seemingly goes missing, divorcee Laura LeCrois is forced to return home after a 20-year hiatus. However, home is not the way Laura remembers it. Her father is in major debt with the bank,...

When most people think of the career of David Arquette, they perceive an often borderline Film/TV career to which he brings a certain nerdy handsome awkwardness, most notably in Eight Legged Freaks and Scream. More usually, however, they will associate him with Courteney Cox- to whom he is still married despite separation last year- and a bizarre infrequent stints as a “pro” wrestler for the WCW, where his ill-judged title reign is often seen as one of the key to that company’s demise.
What fewer will know is that he has a not inconsiderable series of directorial credits to his name and is now about to film his first ever 3D feature film, titled Glutton.
Arquette’s previous directorial credits include several episodes of CSI Miami and Medium, as well as a co-written sole feature film called The Tripper; a slightly trashy horror oddity in which a...

David Arquette has always been a horror genre guy, from appearing in the Scream franchise and Eight Legged Freaks, to directing his own slasher flick, The Tripper. With that in mind it's not surprising to hear that Arquette has signed on to even more genre fare.
Veriety is reporting that Arquette will get behind the camera again for the upcoming 3D horror flick, Glutton. No plot crunch is available as of yet, but Kenny Yakkel (Dead Air) wrote the script, which is described as being in the vein of Misery. Stan Spry and Cameron Larson are producing along with R. Scott Reid, Steve Ecclesine and Lawreen Yakkel, while Arquette will exec produce through his Coquette Prods. banner.
Glutton is scheduled to begin production in Canada this July. We'll bring you more as we have it.
