Back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, Anchor Bay Entertainment was a major player in the horror world, giving DVD releases to films like the Evil Dead trilogy, George A. Romero’s Dead trilogy, the Sleepaway Camp franchise, The Hills Have Eyes, The Car, Maniac, Prom Night, some of the Hellraisers, Halloweens, and much more. Then things changed, and eventually Anchor Bay got folded into Lionsgate Home Entertainment… but now Deadline reports that the Anchor Bay Entertainment label is being revived, and the revival is starting off with the releases of puppet horror film Abruptio and Dinner with Leatherface, a documentary that looks at the life, career, and legacy of original Leatherface actor Gunnar Hansen!
Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are behind the return of Anchor Bay Entertainment, and they’re planning to use the label to bring the world “genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics,...

Horror fans will recognize Adam Marcus as the director of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and the co-writer of Texas Chainsaw, two divisive but oft-discussed entries in their respective franchises. He recently returned to the genre to helm Secret Santa, a holiday horror-comedy streaming exclusively on Screambox.
The first installment in our three-part interview with the raconteur focuses on Jason Goes to Hell, currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, along with the upcoming retrospective documentary Hearts of Darkness: The Making of the Final Friday and a potential Creighton Duke-inspired spin-off.
“People who don’t like Jason Goes to Hell are rabid. They’re not your average haters; they’re knives-out from the second you meet them,” Marcus says with a chuckle. “When people go, ‘That’s not canon,’ I’m like, ‘No, bitches, it’s canon! I made Jason a Deadite. I did that!'” he beams.

The 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, is getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) from Synapse Films. We’re still waiting to hear a release date for that, as obviously the company wasn’t able to meet the hoped-for October release window – but while we wait for the special physical media release, Trick or Treat is set to making its streaming debut on the Screambox service this Friday, October 27th! Just in time for Halloween viewing!
Directed by Charles Martin Smith from a screenplay by Rhet Topham, Joel Soisson, and Michael S. Murphey (with an uncredited polish from the Final Destination duo of James Wong and Glen Morgan), Trick or Treat has the following synopsis: This mesmerizing horror adventure takes you into the terrifying dark side of rock’n’roll. What are you afraid of? It’s only rock ‘n roll. Decades before Michael Dougherty released Trick ‘r Treat there was Trick or Treat, a 1986 horror movie directed by Charles Martin Smith that introduced the world to undead rocker Sammi Curr. The cult classic has Never Before been available to stream, but Bloody Disgusting is changing that this Halloween.
Cineverse is giving horror fans a whole new reason to scream this spooky season, as they announce the acquisition of the 1986 horror classic Trick or Treat from Red Shirt Pictures/Synapse Films. The company will premiere Trick or Treat just in time for Halloween weekend exclusively on Screambox. The film begins streaming this Friday, October 27!
This will be the first time the new restoration from Synapse Films has Ever been seen, and it’s also the first time the movie has Ever made its way onto a streaming service.

Although far from the first horror anthology, Creepshow quickly established itself as the quintessential one. After several stalled attempts to work together, George A. Romero and Stephen King — two undisputed masters in their respective fields, each in their prime — finally collaborated in 1982. With both creators having grown up on EC horror comics of the 1950s like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear, it made sense that an homage to those works would bring the two titans of terror together.
Creepshow packs five tales (three originals and two adapted from existing King short stories) plus a wraparound that bookends the film in two hours flat. The Halloween-set framing story finds a disparaging father lambasting his son for reading horror comics before throwing away the latest issue of Creepshow. Beckoned by the silent host known as The Creep, the tales within the discarded comic serve as the anthology’s segments.

Mvd Entertainment will release Swamp Thing on July 25th , presenting 4K Uhd and Blu-ray editions that contain both the US theatrical PG cut, along with the unrated international version of the film:
Press Release: Swamp Thing is an American superhero horror film written and directed by Wes Craven, based on the DC Comics character of the same name created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. It tells the story of a brilliant scientist, Dr. Alec Holland and a government agent, Alice Cable who have developed a secret formula that could end world hunger and change civilization forever. Little do they know, however, that their arch nemesis, Arcane is plotting to steal the serum for his own selfish schemes. Looting the lab and kidnapping Cable, Arcane douses Holland with the chemicals and leaves him for dead in the swamp. Mutated by his own formula, Holland becomes “Swamp Thing” - a half...

Set on August 18, 1973, director Tobe Hooper’s classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (watch it Here) was released in October of 1974 – and to mark the 50th anniversary of the events of the film and the 49th anniversary of the film itself, director Michael Kallio will soon be releasing Dinner with Leatherface, a documentary that looks at the life, career, and legacy of original Leatherface actor Gunnar Hansen. Dinner with Leatherface is expected to make its way out into the world this October.
Our friends at Bloody Disgusting note that “Hansen was a beloved figure in the horror community, but many fans didn’t know that he wasn’t just an actor. He was also a writer, poet, photographer, and documentary filmmaker. Bloody Disgusting has learned about a brand new documentary titled Dinner with Leatherface, which looks at the life, legacy, and career of the late horror icon Gunnar Hansen.
The release of Dinner with Leatherface is scheduled for this October to coincide with the 50th anniversary theatrical release of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
Gunnar Hansen is of course best known for his portrayal of the terrifying, chainsaw-wielding Leatherface in the classic horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974).
Directed by Michael Kallio, the documentary will feature interviews with several of Hansen’s friends and colleagues, including fellow actors Bruce Campbell, Barbara Crampton, Kane Hodder, and Brian O’Halloran. The film will also include many in-depth interviews with his co-stars from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, as well as the film’s cinematographer Daniel Pearl and screenwriter Kim Henkel.

The 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat is one of my all-time favorites, but since the VHS era it has only gotten a barebones DVD release (which is available for a high price Here) and a Blu-ray in Germany. So this ranks high as some of the coolest news I’ve seen lately: Synapse Films is putting together a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) of Trick or Treat that they’re hoping to send out into the world by the end of 2023!
Full details on the release aren’t available at this time, as they’re too early in the process, but Synapse Films is collaborating with Michael Felsher of Red Shirt Pictures to make sure it’s the best it can be. The livestream announcement can be viewed on Facebook.

Hey, everyone! We’re back with a brand new installment of our horror and sci-fi home media recap, and if you’re looking to check out some fun stuff this upcoming Memorial Day weekend, maybe this week’s releases can help keep you entertained. If you haven’t had a chance to check them out yet, both Umma featuring Sandra Oh and Matt Reeves’ The Batman arrive on Tuesday via a variety of formats. Both Tobe Hooper’s Lifeforce and James Wan’s Malignant are getting the 4K format treatment this week, and somehow I missed the fact that there was a RoboCop TV series at some point, but that’s being released on both Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday. And on a bittersweet note, the Foo Fighters’ Studio 666 is making its home entertainment debut this week as well.

There was never really a need to sequelize 1982’s Poltergeist. It told a complete story. It vanquished the evil spirit haunting the house by film’s end. Heck, it even vanquished the house itself. But because the original movie was a hit and it was the ’80s, the Tobe Hooper/Steven Spielberg collaboration got not just one sequel but two, despite the fact that it does not lend itself to being a franchise. New villains and new mythology—and eventually even new family members—were introduced to keep the story going, albeit with mixed results. And while the sequels have their fans, they’re hardly among the most beloved horror films of the decade. Thanks to Scream Factory’s new Collector's Editions of both, horror fans now have the chance to reevaluate them in the best possible format.

“Buy a Bag, Go Home in a Box.” You have no idea how thrilled I am to report that one of my absolute favorite horror movies of the Nineties, Popcorn, will get a fully-loaded special edition Blu-ray sometime around Halloween this year courtesy of Synapse Films.
For the uninitiated, Popcorn is a love letter to the golden age of b-movies in the guise of a fun slasher flick about film students putting on an all-night bad movie horror film festival; a master-of-disguise maniac begins killing them off during the show via twisted takes on old school movie theater gimmicks.
The true highlights are the fake movies-within-the-movie lovingly paying homage to the b-movies of the Fifties and Sixties: The Amazing Electrified Man, The Stench, and Mosquito!

If there was one genre that spawned countless knock-offs (some better than the films they were imitating, others not so much) it was the slasher film. Even some films that were touted as the greats amongst the sub-genre would be still hidden in the shadows of the films they were emulating. There’s a waterfall effect to these films that start with Psycho and fall through Black Christmas onto Friday the 13th. But within the sub-genre, a splintering could be found as well, creating a mutated family hierarchy of slasherdom. Every slasher film had to find some sort of way of setting itself apart from the other, by creating some sort of different villain who was unstoppable and creative in ways that kept bodies in seats.

A simple story of a street gang terrorizing a soon-to-be abandoned police station while the inhabitants within fight for their lives, Assault on Precinct 13 is surprisingly touching and a great example of Carpenter’s economy as a filmmaker, as the film is lean and packs quite a punch. While the plot sounds flimsy, it’s Carpenter’s care for his characters, creating real people we care about, in extraordinary circumstances that make it work on so many levels rather than becoming a mindless action film.

Swamp Thing is based on the popular DC Comics character and couldn’t be any more different than Craven’s previous film, Deadly Blessing. A departure into science fiction for the horror director and one of Adrienne Barbeau’s early genre films, it’s a Beauty and the Beast romance with some industrial sabotage thrown in for good measure. Just released to Blu-ray / DVD by Scream Factory, Swamp Thing is a great blast of nostalgia for kids of the 1980’s.
Dr. Alec Holland (Ray Wise) has been holed up in the swamps with his sister (Nannette Brown), working on a way to hybridize animal and plant DNA in an attempt solve the world’s hunger problems. Alice Cable (Adrienne Barbeau) enters the picture as a government agent sent to investigate and report on his progress. The two quickly strike up a relationship, but their time together is interrupted when a...

I really hate the bad rap that Halloween III gets. I mean, it’s a stinker reputation. People are either supremely dismissive or they appreciate it for what it is – a completely underrated film with a downer of an ending and trying something new when it appears that it seemed to be heading the way of franchise, and as we undoubtedly know, it has.
The idea being that Carpenter and Debra Hill wanted something new, after all an unstoppable killer would become old hat after a while. And so, they decided to hand the reins over to the talented Tommy Lee Wallace and this is what he produced. And merciful me, it sunk and it sunk badly. Does this mean it’s a bad film? Not at all. Swamp Thing (1982) is a peculiar entry in the Wes Craven canon. For a director who cut his teeth in porn (most directors began their careers as editors in this field in the early 1970s) and directed such fare as The Last House on the Left (1972) and The Hills Have Eyes (1977), Swamp Thing is a much gentler film. One of the few PG-rated entries to his credit, it was made just a few years prior to his very own A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), the movie that turned the horror film industry on its ear with the introduction of Fred Krueger and which spawned one of the most successful franchises in the genre.
Released on Friday, February 19, 1982 by the late Joseph E. Levine’s long-defunct Embassy Pictures, Swamp Thing is a film version of the DC Comic that was created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. Set in...

Monster movies had seen their heyday come and go by the time Joe Dante made The Howling in 1981 and it seemed as if everyone had seen everything. However, Dante manages to create a unique entry in the werewolf movie canon with a murder mystery with supernatural creatures in it. The Howling still stands as one of the most inventive and fun horror films from the 1980′s and this stacked to the rafters Blu-ray from Scream Factory is a must have.

There's so much to like about the 1985 science fiction / horror / action-packed apocalypse flick Lifeforce that one finds it very easy to overlook the film's numerous problems. I mean, why worry about boring stuff like editorial cohesion and tonal consistency when you have a flick jam-packed with spaceships, vampires, lasers, mass murder, and one of the most gorgeous naked ladies to ever grace the silver screen? No movie geek worth their stripes could dismiss Tobe Hooper's Lifeforce without admitting that there's some pretty amazing stuff on display in this adorably weird movie. Or if not amazing then at least novel, diverting, and audacious. The movie does borrow from a ton of other sci-fi films, but it has also inspired a few moments in films like Species, The Hidden, and 28 Days Later, so it all seems fair in the end.
Look, the movie is based on a novel called The Space Vampires,...

Every few months or so another behind-the-scenes video from Universal's prequel to The Thing slips online and makes us want to set our pubes ablaze with great fury over how cool this movie could have been. This is one of those times.
Mind you, these fine bits of practical FX work were unfortunately scrapped for "more realistic" looking CGI. For more on those poor decisions, read Michael Felsher's editorial on The Thing premake and my review of The Thing Blu-ray.
StudioADI has shared another previously unseen behind-the-scenes video. The torso puppet you see below was built to show Henrick's legs kicking as he's being swallowed by the "Thing" under the shack.
The videos below the torso puppet, which we've posted before but you might have missed, showcase two animatronic pilot aliens. “The mummified Pilot and the Thing having replicated itself as one of the alien crew members. In the story originally,...

Every time that we discuss the prequel to The Thing, a sense of both sadness and bewilderment washes over us. Short of the ridiculous third act and the dumb decision to change the way that them crazy Swedes access the UFO, there was a good movie in there.
There was also some fine practical FX work that was unfortunately scrapped for "more realistic" looking CGI. For more on these read Michael Felsher's editorial on The Thing premake and my review of The Thing Blu-ray.
All that being said, StudioADI has shared a previously unseen behind-the-scenes video displaying two animatronic pilot aliens. “The mummified Pilot and the Thing having replicated itself as one of the alien crew members. In the story originally, the Thing needed to become one of these aliens in order to fly the ship buried under the ice (note the bio-mechanical connections implanted in the creature’s back),” they explain.

Very few movie studios are willing to gamble on anything that strays outside of their comfort zones. They all want sure things. That's why we get so many remakes and sequels to movies these days. Their actions aren't without reason. Moviegoers are a fickle bunch. Something that sounds or looks good on paper may not translate well when it finally hits the big screen. Universal Studios and John Carpenter learned that lesson the hard way with Halloween III: Season of the Witch.
With the release of Halloween III: Season of the Witch on Blu-ray, horror enthusiasts are given the chance to once again revisit the one and only entry in the franchise that doesn't feature knife-wielding Michael Myers. It would seem like common sense that a movie whose first two entries banked on the masked Myers' teenage killing sprees wouldn't work without him.
However, producers John Carpenter and Debra Hill...

John Carpenter’s Halloween was never meant to be the recipient of any sequels as originally conceived, yet it birthed seven. Halloween III: Season of the Witch is the odd man out in the franchise because Michael Meyers is nowhere to be found to the detriment of the box office, but the benefit of the story.
While there are Halloween fans that detest the film, and casual film goers don’t even seem to know it exists, I find this offbeat, highly atmospheric film to be the best of all of the sequels.
Dr. Daniel Challis (Tom Atkins) and Ellie Grimsbridge (Stacey Nelkin) travel to the small town of Santa Mira, California to investigate Silver Shamrock Novelties. They are a huge maker of Halloween masks, and the duo are convinced the company has something to do with the murder of her father at the hospital where Dr. Challis works. It...

Even though I was a child of the 80′s and saw most horror films via good ol’ VHS in the 8 plus years I rented from my local video store, some horror films passed by me. Sometimes it was because the title or the cover never interested me. Scott Spiegel‘s Intruder was a film that got knocked on both merits. The cover of the VHS looked like it was an alien film and the name of the film didn’t help prove me wrong. Even though it had “From the creators of Evil Dead II” on it, I just never gave it a chance.
Lucky for me some of these films are hitting DVD & Blu-Ray in restored versions. Synapse Films brings Intruder home in a Director’s Cut. The film was heavily cut during its VHS run via Paramount and after seeing the film, I’m kind of glad...

In his editorial on The Thing premake, Michael Felsher mused that something had to have gone wrong during post-production on the flick. The film just switches gears into a CGI-laden mess. Where were the practical effects? Well, sadly ... we're about to show them to you.

Anyone reading this site knows and loves Evil Dead. Hell, they probably own multiple copies, multiple editions, and probably even have multiple tattoos. How many of us have those Book of the Dead editions sitting on the shelf right now?
The thing about Evil Dead 2, is that it’s probably the most loved horror flick out there, even more so than anything else that came out of the 80’s. It may not be the best made or scariest flick, but I can’t think of another movie that has so much damned heart to it, while still delivering the goods. There have been funnier movies, and even gorier movies, but nothing has ever been so oddly balanced and unique. I love me some Dead Alive, and I swear by Shaun Of The Dead, but Evil Dead 2 sits on a shelf all its own.

I love me some Dead Alive, and I swear by Shaun Of The Dead, but Evil Dead 2 sits on a shelf all its own.
And that...

First off, consider me to be a full-fledged obsessive fan of John Carpenter's The Thing. It was one of the formative films of my youth and remains to this day one of my all time favorite movies...period. It's an expert examination of escalating paranoia and pressure-cooker suspense with a stellar cast, nimble and effective screenwriting, dread-soaked photography and score, and expert finely-tuned direction that never missteps once. All of this, and one of the most kick-ass "downer" endings that earns its hard-won finality from a film whose tone signals death and resigned self-sacrifice from the very get-go.
I am one of those devotees who loves to debate when the creature assimilated certain characters and who exactly was responsible for the sabotage of the blood supply. When was Blair assimilated? In the shack, or even before that point? Is Childs still himself at the end of the picture, or is he some "thing" else?...

Another week. Another show. Same shit. But good, nontheless! Seriously, it's time for your host, Buz "Danger" Wallick to treat you to another helping of his Different Show. This week's episode spouts another great guest, and promises another fascinating listen. Lend him your ear!
This week, Michael Felsher of Red Shirt Pictures sits down with Buz for a genuinely fascinating discussion of the practice of creating extra material for DVD/Blu-ray releases, and also on the current state of the home video industry. Well worth the time for all you DVD junkies out there, believe me!
Head on over to Buz's Same Shit, Different Show website (that's .biz, fyi) and dig it. These are really good thus far and Buz is just getting started. Certainly looking forward to what upcoming weeks will bring, and whatever that may be, you know you'll always be entertained.
