When “Maestro” director, writer, and star Bradley Cooper wanted to meet with Carey Mulligan to talk about her joining his Leonard Bernstein biopic, it was “a quite dramatic” beginning.
Cooper, who wanted Mulligan to play Bernstein’s wife, Felicia, attended the first preview of her one-woman play “Girls and Boys.” During the show, being staged in New York’s West Village, a piece of wood fell and hit Mulligan’s head. It gave Mulligan a concussion, which she now downplays, calling it a curtain because “it sounds fluffy.”
On this episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Cooper and Mulligan discuss the process of getting into the mindset to play the Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre in Netflix’s “Maestro.” The two break down key scenes, and talk about their favorite acting works from one another. Listen below.

Maestro. (L to R) Carey Mulligan as Felicia Montealegre and Bradley Cooper as Leonard Bernstein (Director/Writer/Producer) in Maestro. Cr. Jason McDonald/Netflix © 2023. Bradley Cooper’s second directorial effort, “Maestro” — a biopic about Leonard Bernstein — has earned him rave reviews as both an actor and a director, including Golden Globe nominations for Best Drama Motion Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture. Cooper also co-wrote the film’s screenplay with Josh Singer. One thing he wanted to make as authentic as possible was the late conductor’s relationship with his wife — played in the film by Carey Mulligan — and Cooper told us they did a lot of research into the Bernsteins’ relationship to get it just right. It’s not often that you get two films in the same year devoted to a couple of Twentieth-Century giants of science and music as “Oppenheimer” and “Maestro.” But then theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) and conductor-composer Leonard Bernstein (Bradley Cooper) were both legends deserving of lofty cinematic treatment, and directors Christopher Nolan and Cooper delivered dazzling spectacles of sight and sound. Which is why these Best Picture contenders will likely also be craft juggernauts for Universal and Netflix.
Interestingly, both movies were not only shot on Kodak film, but also in color and black-and-white. This was to distinguish the timelines and to heighten the emotional toll of their titanic achievements. Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, was driven to build it and then tormented by its destruction to the detriment of his marriage to biologist-botanist Kitty (Emily Blunt). By contrast, Bernstein, the Renaissance Man of American Music,...

Leonard Bernstein’s three kids are coming to Bradley Cooper’s defence following criticism that the actor portrayed himself with “Jewface” in his upcoming biopic of the classical composer.
Cooper, 48, found himself facing the brunt of online flack when the trailer for his latest flick, “Maestro”, which follows the life story of the Jewish-American composer, dropped on Wednesday.
The trailer showcases the Oscar nominee’s prosthetic nose to highlight Bernstein’s appearance. However, some people online found the choice offensive. British actor Tracy-Ann Obermann said the choice parallels “Black-Face or Yellow-Face”, insisting a Jewish actor would have been fitter for the role.

Solange Knowles and Crown Royal Golden Apple celebrate their new partnership for Saint Heron, an artists’ institution founded by Knowles and named after her 2013 album Saint Heron.
The Texas native announced the new partnership on her Instagram account and shared pictures of her posing in front of an emerald background, wearing a leather top and skirt, while carrying what looks to be a glass filled with Crown Royal.
The partnership comes after Knowles asked to collaborate with glassblower artist Jason McDonald and launched their work under Saint Heron.
Last week, they launched a glassware collection called Small Matter Art Objects: Handblown Glassware 001.
“The glassware reveals the sentience of household objects through the landscape of Black domesticity,” Knowles wrote in one of her earlier announcements of her collaboration with Saint Heron.
Knowles’ glassware collection debuted last week and has reportedly already sold out.
