As Reece Shearsmith just announced, it’s the beginning of the end for Inside No. 9. Filming on the horror-comedy anthology’s ninth and final series began in late 2023, which means a wrap on one of the BBC’s most consistently entertaining and inventive shows is imminent.

Series nine is expected to air in spring 2024, and will add a final six episodes to the existing 49 stories in Shearsmith and co-creator Steve Pemberton’s back catalogue. Barring the first look image above, which shows Pemberton in drag at an underground train station (platform no. nine?), we don’t know anything about the stories, settings or characters yet, but we do know who’ll be joining the pair as guest stars… and it’s a deep bench.

Contains spoilers for Murder is Easy including the identity of the murderer.
A Christmas Christie is a treat and Murder is Easy scratches that itch very nicely. Telling the story of a rural village of two halves where people keep getting murdered while the police seemingly do nothing, this latest adap written by Sian Ejiwunmi-Le Berre makes some meaty changes to Christie’s original story. Most noticeably our hero, Luke Fitzwilliam (David Jonsson) is no longer a white policeman but a young Nigerian diplomat. After encountering a lady on a train (Penelope Wilton) who tells him about the deaths in the village and that they were carried out by a respectable person with a point to make, and who is subsequently killed herself, Fitzwilliam feels it’s his duty to find out what’s going on.

Fans of British TV ate well in 2023. The year said goodbye to some excellent British TV shows with the finales of extraordinary crime dramas Happy Valley, Top Boy, Guilt and Endeavour – four very different shows set in four very different places. We waved off comedies Sex Education and Ghosts, and welcomed back some exciting returns in the form of Black Mirror, Good Omens and of course, Doctor Who.
And then there were the new additions – superhero comedy Extraordinary, police newbie drama Blue Lights, mind-bending comic book adaptation Bodies and chilling true crime series The Sixth Commandment.
It’s hard to separate the pack, but using a complex system of pulleys and levers, a gunge machine and – unfortunately necessary for the person who nominated The Idol – an oubliette, Den of Geek polled its writers and drew up two lists of the best TV of the year, one for American shows and...

Vanessa Kirby used "creative licence" for her portrayal of Empress Josephine in 'Napoleon'.The 35-year-old actress features in Sir Ridley Scott's historical epic as the wife of Joaquin Phoenix's ruthless French Emperor and explained how she took certain liberties in bringing the historical figure to life.Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the film's UK premiere on Thursday (16.11.23), Vanessa said: "As with any fictional interpretation, who they are onscreen and compared to the history, there's always creative licence."It's like in 'The Crown' (in which she played Princess Margaret in the first two seasons). I learned that behind closed doors, it's an imagined version of events... I read every book I possibly could about her to capture this very elusive, interesting, strange energy she had."The movie focuses on Napoleon's successes on the battlefield and the deep sexual hold that Josephine had over him, with Vanessa...

En garde. A connoisseur of the onscreen battle, Ridley Scott stepped away from production on his anticipated Gladiator 2 to usher in the latest depiction of a power-hungry, pitifully-in-love Napoleon Bonaparte on Thursday night.
Napoleon, following the meteoric rise and fall of the 19th century French emperor — produced by Apple and theatrically distributed by Sony — premiered in London’s Leicester Square with frontman Joaquin Phoenix leading the troops on a rain-soaked red, white and blue carpet.
“It was such a shame not to be able to have show business at its biggest and its best for all those months [during the recently concluded writers and actors strikes], so it feels really fantastic to be back,” Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group, told The Hollywood Reporter.
It wasn’t long before Rothman was hailing Phoenix’s performance: “You couldn’t do a legendary figure without a legendary actor.”

Ridley Scott’s Napoleon opens in 1793 as a revolutionary rage courses throughout France. The camera tracks a ragged yet prideful Marie Antoinette (Catherine Walker) making her way toward her executioners as commoners hurl insults and tomatoes at her. This sequence kicks off the film with a propulsive energy that instantly keys us to the rowdy spirit of the times. Unfortunately, as soon as the guillotine drops, Napoleon shifts into traditional historical biopic mode, dutifully touching on major events like the Reign of Terror and the royalist insurrection, but only in the most compulsory, disinterested manner.

Napoleon Bonaparte is known for being many things: Warrior, General, Tyrant, Genius, Rebel. Take your pick! For Ridley Scott’s new film, Napoleon, Joaquin Phoenix brings many shades of Bonaparte’s reputation to light, highlighting the complex historical figure’s faults and strategic erudition. Today, Columbia Pictures debuted a new clip from Napoleon featuring the Battle of Austerlitz, aka the Battle of Three Emperors.
The footage finds Phoenix’s Napoleon taking the high ground, looking down on his enemies with disdain and menacing intent. While DS Tosh performs the duties of acting Di at Lerwick Police Station, detective Ruth Calder has come up from London in search of a missing witness in a serious crime case. It just so happens that Calder is an old Shetlander who left the islands as a teenager and was glad to be rid of the place, where she’s confronted by some old ghosts.
Ugly Betty and Agatha Raisin’s Ashley Jensen plays Calder, along with a new guest cast of Scottish stars as well as Shetland’s returning favourites. The latter includes Alison O’Donnell as DS Alison ‘Tosh’ McIntosh, Steven Robertson as DC Sandy Wilson,...

Ridley Scott brings his historical film skills to France for the epic biopic Napoleon, which comes to us from Apple Originals. The director is currently on hiatus filming the sequel, Gladiator 2, while the SAG-AFTRA strike still marches on. And recently, the Blade Runner filmmaker recently revealed that he has a whopping four-and-a-half-hour director’s cut of Napoleon that he’s working on. Apple has just released the new trailer for the film.
The official synopsis from Apple reads,
Napoleon is an original and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. The film captures Napoleon’s famous battles, relentless ambition, and astounding strategic mind as an extraordinary military leader and war visionary.
The film stars Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role of the French emperor.

PBS‘s World on Fire, the engrossing British drama about ordinary people trying to survive World War II, is back after a four-year absence. It’s worth the wait. Here’s what to expect in the six episodes beginning in October 1940, early in the German bombing campaign on the U.K. known as the Blitz. 1. Home front tempers flare. Proper English matriarch Robina Chase has taken in the wife of her purpose-seeking son Harry (Jonah Hauer-King), a British Army lieutenant. But Kasia (Zofia Wichlacz)—a Polish refugee and resistance fighter- itching to return to action—clashes with both her mother-in-law and the locals. Meanwhile, a mysterious new tenant, charming Sir James Danemere, is billeted at the Chase home. (Stay out of his luggage!) 2. Desert warfare roils North Africa. Harry and Sgt. Stan Rad-dings (Blake Harrison) brave German tanks and sandstorms with their new ally, the British Indian Army’s fearless...

When “World on Fire” premiered on the BBC in September 2019, no one could have known that the World War II drama would be one of the last major scripted debuts on the public broadcaster before the pandemic.
The PBS Masterpiece co-production — which follows the interconnected lives of British and European families during the outbreak of war — confirmed it would return at the end of its Season 1 finale, but the onset of the Covid-19 crisis just four months later and its impact on global production made the prospect of setting up a continent-spanning war drama all the more unlikely.
Yet with some heroic scheduling, rewritten scripts and clever location and CGI combos, Season 2 returned to British screens on Sunday after a four-year hiatus, premiering to an audience indelibly changed by a global and life-altering event of their own.

Scottish thriller Guilt is back for the third and final chapter in the McCall Brothers trilogy. Neil Forsyth’s fiendishly plotted drama all began when Max and Jake – a ruthless lawyer who’d climbed his way out of his working class Leith upbringing to wealth and status, and his vinyl-loving record shop slacker sibling – were flung together when they tried to cover up an accidental hit-and-run. So began a complex and gripping story about money laundering, Edinburgh gangsters, betrayal, class, family and yes, guilt.
Series three finds Max and Jake forced back to Edinburgh where some old enemies await. They’re joined by Pi-turned legal advisor Kenny Burns, his police detective girlfriend Yvonne, criminal kingpin Maggie Lynch, dangerously unpredictable ex-con Teddy and more familiar faces from the first two series. Also appearing are a range of new characters, as follows:
Isaura Barbé-Brown as Yvonne Nixon

Max McCall is a bad brother, a worse friend, and a great TV character. That’s half down to Mark Bonnar’s exceptional performance as the disbarred lawyer who’d sell his granny for a rung back up the ladder he slid down in series one, and half down to creator Neil Forsyth’s writing.
Guilt’s scripts are beauties; they tell their twisting thriller story about crime, class and family without cliché or predictability. They’re funny and political, because so are people, and they’re universal because they have a pin-sharp sense of place. You don’t need to be from Leith or Edinburgh for its us-and-them rivalry to resonate, or to get the baked-in meaning of local boundaries and kinships, or see why it’s a punchline for a character to have moved to Dundee.
Anybody can also understand how wealth might be an expressway out of poverty and powerlessness,...

2023 is going to be a year of long-awaited drama treats on UK TV. There’s the Luther film finally arriving on Netflix in March, Unforgotten is back after that Series 4 finale in 2021, and we’re getting the second season of Good Omens that has had the shows’ many enthusiastic fans on the edge of their seats for two years.
There are even whispers of a Line of Duty return, although Martin Compston has said that nothing is confirmed, so we’re not exclaiming ‘Jesus, Mary and Joseph and the wee donkey!’ just yet.
It’s also a year of dramatic goodbyes: Happy Valley returned for its third and final series on New Year’s Day, Endeavour will wrap up after over a decade of detective work, and 2023 might also squeeze in the sixth and final season of The Crown.
This is our roundup of the British TV shows we’re...

Why Mark Bonnar is unravelling the Russian poisoning story that rocked Britain in Litvinenko
Mark Bonnar is everywhere, but when the actor gets stopped by fans in the street, they struggle to recall where they know him from. “‘I’m sure we’ve met, is your boy Jimmy?’” they ask, assuming he’s a parent they’ve spotted on the school run. In these circumstances, Bonnar – who’s been nominated for five Scottish Baftas and has won one – doesn’t call himself an actor. “What I usually say is, ‘I’m on the telly sometimes,’” he says. Then comes the “Aha!’ moment, and he watches the pieces fall into place, with one (or many) of his characters coming to mind.
Bonnar has built a career out of this quiet ubiquity. He played the corrupt cop Mike Dryden in season two of Line of Duty; the sweary, straight-talking friend to Rob Delaney...
