Mahershala Ali is in talks to join the newest installment in the Jurassic World franchise from Universal Pictures, Deadline can confirm.
Details as to the role he’ll be playing are under wraps, as is the plot of the film, which is said to launch an all-new storyline. But should the deal make, he’ll join an ensemble that includes Scarlett Johansson, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Jonathan Bailey and Rupert Friend, as previously announced.
Gareth Edwards has been enlisted to direct the new film from a script by David Koepp. Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley are producing for Kennedy-Marshall, with Steven Spielberg executive producing for Amblin Entertainment. Mahershala Ali, the two-time Oscar winner who was last seen in Netflix’s hit thriller Leave the World Behind, is in talks to join Scarlett Johansson in Universal’s new Jurassic World feature.
Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo are already on the manifest for the project that is stomping toward a production start in mid-June in London with Gareth Edwards in the director’s chair.
The studio is keeping plot details hidden in a can of Barbasol. David Koepp, the original screenwriter of Jurassic Park (1993) and The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), penned the script for the new installment.
Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, who have shepherded the modern Jurassic franchise, will produce through Kennedy/Marshall. Steven Spielberg, who kicked off the franchise with Jurassic Park, is exec producing through Amblin Entertainment.
Universal has set a theatrical release of July 2, 2025, which means it will be hustling like a velociraptor in postproduction.

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver might have debuted at #1 on the English Films List for Netflix’s Top 10 with 21.4 million views, but it wasn’t enough to top the original or stand against other films on the popular streaming service. When Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire debuted in December, the Star Wars-like action film gained 23.9 million views during its opening window. While the gap between both films isn’t staggering, one has to wonder why more people failed to tune in for the continuation of Snyder’s story.
While I would say the promotional lead-up to Rebel Moon 2 felt weaker than the first, others could beg to differ. Regardless of the sequel’s opening salvo, 5.5 million viewers returned to Rebel Moon—Part One: A Child of Fire to familiarize themselves with the original before watching the sequel. Julia Roberts is sitting on a cozy chocolate-colored sofa in a villa at West Hollywood’s Sunset Marquis two days before the Oscars, gazing affectionately at her newest project. “This is all me,” she says, pausing for a moment and then flashing her unmistakable megawatt grin to confirm that she is, in fact, only kidding.
The Oscar winner did, however, have a hand in the creation of what’s elegantly placed on a luxe tray in front of her: a three-piece Chopard high jewelry set comprising a necklace, earrings and oversized ring (all one of a kind) featuring emeralds, turquoise and rubellite gemstones. Last week, it rose to 9.9M views to top Netflix’s English TV Top 10.
It was followed by Season 6 of Love Is Blind, which debuted at number two with 6.3M views. The pair were followed by Griselda, which topped the list last week, The Tourist, Fool Me Once, Taylor Tomlinson: Have It All, American Nightmare, Warrior, Resident Alien and House, M.D.
The latter two entries highlight the power of Netflix’s licensing strategy, taking older shows and rocketing them to the top ten.

The director and star of 2023’s Leave The World Behind – Sam Esmail and Julia Roberts – are reuniting for Panic Carefully.
Films that release straight to streaming can sometimes have a hard time when it comes to making a splash in the cultural conversation. One film that stylishly sidestepped that pitfall, however, was Leave The World Behind, the Sam Esmail-directed thriller that dropped at the tail-end of last year on Netflix.
The combination of a wonderful ensemble led by Julia Roberts, a nail-biting narrative and a sudden swerve of an ending meant that Leave The World Behind was a hot topic of conversation online. We’d bet the same was probably true offline too, as people went back to work after their Christmas hols and chatted with friends and colleagues about the movies they’d seen over the break.

On the heels of Sam Esmail’s apocalyptic thriller Leave the World Behind and December news reports that Mark Zuckerberg is constructing a 5,000-square-foot bunker under his ranch on the island of Kauai, the business of fortified shelters is booming.
Adding more fuel to the flames: escalating armed conflict around the globe and, closer to home, the ongoing onslaught of mass shootings and an increasingly fractious political landscape leading up to the presidential election on Nov. 5.
The one-percenters who can afford to pull out all the stops for self-preservation are doing so more than ever — often in a fashion that goes way beyond the submerged corrugated metal units seen on reality shows like Nat Geo’s Doomsday Preppers.
Aiming to protect themselves from potential threats including civil unrest, cyberattacks, nuclear bombing, power grid failure and drastic climate-change events, many work directly with general contractors to build kitted-out end-times bunkers, while...

Seemingly freed from the Marvel machine, Ryan Coogler is set to reunite with Michael B. Jordan on a new project, recently picked up by Warner Bros. THR reports the period thriller will feature the undead, and potentially take place in Jim Crow-era South. While other details are under wraps, there are reports it will feature anime influences and has franchise potential. Production will kick off this April in New Orleans, so expect to learn much more soon.

Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail assembled an impressive cast for his thriller Leave the World Behind that included Julia Roberts (Homecoming), Ethan Hawke (The Black Phone), and Mahershala Ali (True Detective) – but he also delivered a divisive movie that earned reactions that ranged from “wildly riveting and entertaining” and “absolutely amazing” to “hideously bad” and “absolutely awful”. JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray gave the film a 5/10 review that you can read at This Link. I would have scored it higher, I was just left wanting a little more from the ending. Despite the wildly varying reactions, the movie has proven to be quite popular on the Netflix streaming service – in fact, the view count over its first couple months of release has landed it on Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular Movies list!

Leave the World Behind has officially become one of Netflix’s most popular films of all time.
Sam Esmail’s thriller has been steadily moving toward the English Films list for several weeks and finally crossed the threshold during the week of January 22 to 30, debuting at No. 8 with 136.3M views in its first 52 days. Since Netflix now uses a 91-day premiere window to measure the success of its titles, the film still has plenty of time to cement itself higher on the list.
In fact, it’s likely that Leave the World Behind will jump quickly past The Mother, which is currently at No. 7 with just 136.4M views in its premiere window.
Also headed to the most popular list is Berlin, which has tallied 50.1M views in its first 31 days on Netflix — enough to get it to No. 10 on the Non-English language list. The Money Heist franchise now holds four...

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos was asked by an analyst on today’s Q4 earnings call if “the recent management departure” would impact the streamer’s future plans for making original feature films.
“Recent management departure” meaning Film Boss Scott Stuber (who wasn’t specifically name-checked on the call), who is expected to leave in March to start his own media company.
The analyst pointed out that Netflix original movies, even though they outperform licensed titles in viewers and hours, don’t have the same kind of cultural impact that the streamer’s series do.
“Our original movies are attracting some of the biggest audiences in the world,” heralded Sarandos, giving a shoutout to Sam Esmail’s thriller feature, Leave the World Behind, starring Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke and Myha’la.

Prime Video’s Reacher is once again attracting a hefty audience for Amazon.
With the release of the first two episodes of Season 2, the series soared to No. 2 on the Nielsen streaming charts with 1.7B minutes viewed from December 11 to 17. This is pretty similar to the interest it got during the week that Season 1 was released, except all eight episodes dropped at once that time around.
While Nielsen doesn’t release viewership data separated by season, it’s likely that a hefty portion of Reacher’s numbers in December came from Season 2 viewing. That makes it all the more impressive, considering there were only two new episodes. Based on the viewing during this interval, it’s safe to say Reacher will probably stick around the Nielsen charts for several weeks.

More than four years after sci-fi fans heard that a new version of Battlestar Galactica was in development at Peacock, the project has new talent attached. According to Deadline, the upcoming Battlestar Galactica reboot has tapped The Sinner creator Derek Simonds to serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner of the series. He replaces Michael Lesslie (The Little Drummer Girl), who was originally attached to write and executive produce.

Three weeks after premiering on Netflix, Young Sheldon has ascended to the most watched show on streaming platforms in the United States. A platform switch to Netflix also sent The Super Mario Bros. Movie to its biggest streaming week to date.
The two titles, which rank second and third on Nielsen’s streaming chart for the week of Dec. 4-10, are the latest examples of Netflix’s multiplying power. Young Sheldon had 1.63 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Max for the week, after recording 1.85 billion minutes a week earlier and 963 million for its first week on both platforms. The Big Bang Theory prequel had never charted before the past three weeks (it was previously exclusive to Max) and has easily surpassed its parent show in viewing time all three weeks. One week after taking over the Nielsen streaming throne, Young Sheldon was ousted by Leave the World Behind.
Sam Esmail’s apocalyptic thriller debuted on December 8 and, as has been proven by Netflix’s own data over the past month, it has been incredibly popular. From December 4 to December 10, the film racked up 1.9B viewing minutes among U.S. audiences despite only being available for three days in the measurement period.
Leave the World Behind is well on its way to becoming one of Netflix’s most popular English-language movies of all time, so expect it to stick around the Nielsen charts through the December measurement periods, at the very least.

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon is still No. 1 on Netflix.
In its first full week on the streamer, the first part of Snyder’s science-fiction epic racked up 34M views, making it first among the English-language film list from December 25 to 31 — and the most-watched title on the streamer. Add that to the 29M views that the film managed in its debut weekend, and Rebel Moon currently stands at around 63M views for 10 days of availability.
It’ll need to nearly triple that viewership in the next 80 or so days in order to make it among Netflix’s most popular films of all time. Rebel Moon is off to a fine start, though it’s likely the streamer was hoping for a stronger full week of viewership, considering there’s another installment and a director’s cut coming down the pipeline. For reference, Extraction 2, which is currently No. 10 on Netflix’s most popular film list,...

The literal meaning of the term “thriller” is an exciting story, be it a movie or a book. Naturally, you look for a certain kind of movie when you’re in the mood for watching thrillers. But genre-mashup has become a very real thing with movies these days, and that has only broadened the horizons of the stories being explored. The year 2023 is burning proof of that. So here we are, with a list of the best thrillers of the year, where you’re going to find the typical stuff along with some films that might not fit into the genre but have enough thrill in them to make it on the list.
10. Sharper
Funny how Sharper had Sebastian Stan and Julianne Moore playing a “mother-son” duo, but instead of building the film on that amusing casting, the director was bold enough to bring in a lot of twists and turns.

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire took over the Netflix throne in its debut week.

It's hard to read the news these days without feeling a sense of existential dread flare up in your soul. Of course, we're nearly four decades removed now from Steve Martin picking up a newspaper and screaming in his classic '80s rom-com "Roxanne," so it's not as though fretting about the state of the world is a new sensation. Be that as it may, filmmakers have spent much of the 21st century postulating how human society might come toppling down. Perhaps global warming will do us in, like in "The Day After Tomorrow." Or maybe humanity's tampering with nature will produce a super-virus that plunges our global civilization into chaos, like in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." That movie feels especially prescient in the wake of 2020.
In the Netflix-backed "Leave the World Behind," the apocalypse is triggered by a mysterious series of cyberattacks that seemingly culminates...

How do you build an acting career you’re proud of? Well, for Myha’la Herrold, breakout star of HBO’s Industry and the standout in Netflix’s latest apocalyptic drama Leave the World Behind, it starts with saying no.
“Honestly, I have sort of been the same bitch from like the beginning of time,” she tells Rolling Stone. “If there was something that I don’t want to do, I just don’t do it.”
It may seem like a flippant approach to entering an already crowded entertainment industry, but for the Carnegie Mellon Graduate,...

I’m a bit late to the party here, and this is an unusual article for me to be writing. I don’t like to use first person, see! But even though the film came to Netflix a couple of weeks ago I feel like we need to talk about Leave The World Behind and its ending. This isn’t an ‘ending explained’ as such, because I’m not completely sure I can fully explain everything. Instead I think we should talk about it, and I invite you to join me in the comments with your explanations.
Here’s what I made of the film and its closing moments.
Leave the World Behind sees a misanthropic woman and her laissez-faire husband face disasters they are absolutely unprepared for via a massive cyber attack. It’s got a super starry cast, including Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali and Kevin Bacon,...

[This story contains major spoilers about the ending of Leave the World Behind, now streaming on Netflix.]
Plenty of people tried to talk Leave the World Behind director Sam Esmail out of his film’s controversial ending — even Esmail tried to talk himself out of his film’s controversial ending.
But the filmmaker responsible for projects including Mr. Robot ultimately stayed the course, and now, just as he anticipated, the ambiguous conclusion to his apocalyptic thriller has left audiences divided. Adapted from Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel of the same name, Esmail’s iteration, which quickly topped Netflix’s top 10 list when it debuted Dec. 8, follows Amanda and Clay Sandford, played by Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke, who take their children Rose (Farrah Mackenzie) and Archie (Charlie Evans) on a weekend getaway to Long Island. While there, the owners of their luxe home rental, Gh Scott (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la Herrold) return, citing a blackout back in the city.

Audiences are still flocking to Netflix’s new apocalyptic thriller Leave the World Behind.
The film, directed by Sam Esmail, drummed up another 44.9M views in its second week on the streamer from December 11 to 17. It was once again top dog, easily notching another week as Netflix’s most-watched title.
Add that to the 41.7M views that the film managed in its debut week, and Netflix appears to have a hit on its hands. It’s still too early to tell whether Leave the World Behind will claim a spot on the most popular film list, though it is very possible if it keeps the momentum going through the holidays. The film has until March to surpass Extraction 2‘s 134M views in its 91-day premiere window. So, basically, viewership would have to fall off a cliff for it to get shut out from the most popular list.

After its release on Netflix on December 8, 2023, Sam Esmail‘s apocalyptic, psychological thriller Leave the World Behind rose to number 1 on the streaming platform. Although it has enjoyed mostly positive reviews from critics, many audiences have found its plot confusing. On Rotten Tomatoes, Leave the World Behind may have a Tomatometer rating of 75% (from 127 critics reviews), but its Audience Score has a rating of 35% (from over 2500+ reviews). Based on Rumaan Alam‘s 2020 novel, director Sam Esmail’s Leave the World Behind follows a five-part structure throughout the movie’s 141-minute runtime. Much like the characters in...
