New Delhi, Dec 25 (Ians) The roll-out of 5G in India, which was kicked-off in October 2022, is happening at a much faster scale in India compared to 4G or 3G and millions of people will soon have an agile and faster streaming, gaming and work experience on their devices. Some serious concerns, however, remain to be addressed.
Industry experts believe that consumers who live in the proximity of airports are not likely to get 5G on their devices. And that number runs into millions.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) recently sent a letter to telecom providers Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone not to install C-band 5G base stations within the 2.1 km range of Indian airports with immediate effect, as C-Band 5G can create problems with the radio (radar) altimeters of aircraft. During takeoff and landing, and to help avoid crashing into mountains, pilots depend entirely on radio (radar) altimeters).

Qualcomm is working very closely with Reliance Jio to provide its chipset platforms for the 5G fixed wireless access and the Open Ran 5G network.
"Reliance Jio is taking the benefits of 5G at scale to the people in India that will help rural population get faster access to health and education in a seamless way. Qualcomm is currently working with Jio on various components of 5G innovation as its roll-out takes concrete shape," Ignacio Contreras, Senior Director, Product Marketing at Qualcomm, told Ians.
He said that India has impressed the world on 5G roll-out and will become a case study for several countries to follow on how to roll out a new technology in a faster, seamless way.
"India has a significant advantage in terms of engineering and software skills. The country has a highly-educated technical population and our research and development teams there are also very strong for emerging technologies like 5G,...

India is home to more than 500 million smartphone users and over 100 million users with 5G-ready smartphones wish to upgrade to a 5G subscription in 2023, according to a latest Ericsson report.
However, there are multiple challenges ahead for telecom service providers to meet the tough roll-out deadlines.
"In theory, there are use cases out there which really warrant and demand 5G: enterprise solutions, private networks, IoT, logistics. But it could take a year or more for those applications to really take off," Prasanto K. Roy, a leading technology and public policy expert, told Ians.
Telcos will focus on converting existing higher-arpu (average revenue per user) individual customers to 5G, which really limits how much more they can charge for 5G especially in a competitive space.
"I don’t see 5G really bumping up Arpu overall in any significant way — at least not in 2023," Roy said.

Daniel Radcliffe plays a parallel universe version of Weird Al Yankovic in the (faux) biopic “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” according to the film’s writer and director Eric Appel. Check out the video, above.
“This version of Weird Al that we’ve created in the movie is like a bizarro version of Weird Al that exists in an alternate universe,” director Eric Appel said at TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at the Toronto Film Festival, where the movie debuted.
Appel added: “What we really wanted was to find an actor that both worked well in drama and in comedy and that would get what we were going for, have the comedy chops to pull it off, and also be able to, like, 100 fully commit to playing this absurd comedy as straight as possible and as dramatic as possible.” Radcliffe met those criteria and then some.
