Haley Bennett (Cyrano, Swallow, The Girl On The Train) is set to lead Night and Day, Justine Waddell’s adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel, to be directed by BAFTA nominee Tina Gharavi (I Am Nasrine, Cleopatra: African Queens). WestEnd Films has boarded the the German-Irish-u.K. co-production and is introducing the project to buyers in Cannes.
Set in an era when glass ceilings were made of concrete, Bennett will play Katharine Hilbery — one woman who insisted on reaching for the stars. Based on what has been called Woolf’s funniest novel, Night and Day is described as an “unromantic comedy” about a passionate astronomer who does everything she can to avoid romantic love and marriage. Contemporary in tone, the story of Katharine’s bold challenge to the Edwardian patriarchy is set against the backdrop of the suffragette movement and advances in science and technology, at the turn of the 20th century.

French powerhouse Federation Entertainment has rebranded to Federation Studios and signed a Group Chief Financial Officer.
The Around the World in 80 Days producer-distributor has expanded rapidly over the past 12 months or so and the new name is an attempt to “federate its various fields of activity and businesses,” according to the company.
The logo will also be updated in due course and Julie Gualino Daly has joined as Group CFO, alongside other new financial team members.
She will work closely with COO Benoit Lacombe to oversee financial strategy and supervize M&a as Federation Studios seeks further growth.
The 250-staff outfit said its creative teams have grown by 30 in the last few months alone.
The company most recently acquired Britannia and Bulletproof producer Vertigo Films. In the past year, it has also partnered with U.S. studio Anonymous Content to launch a joint venture in France, opened in the U.S.

Federation Entertainment has hit the M&a trail once again by taking a majority stake in Britannia, Bronson and Bulletproof producer Vertigo Films, its first British acquisition.
The French Bureau and Around the World in 80 Days powerhouse has had a highly acquisitive year and the move comes almost exactly 12 months after Federation set up a UK production company helmed by two former eOne execs.
Launched 20 years ago, James Richardson and Allan Niblo’s Vertigo has been behind the likes of hit features Monster and Bronson. It moved into TV when CEO Jane Moore joined in 2014 and achieved success with Sky double Britannia and Bulletproof, although the latter was cancelled last year following the allegations made by 20 women against lead Noel Clarke, which he denies.
Vertigo is now working on Amazon Prime Video’s Jez Butterworth-penned Mammals starring James Corden and Sally Hawkins, 80s gangster epic A Town Called Malice and a yet-to-be-announced Sky Cinema film.
