Canadian distributor and global sales agent Filmoption International has acquired international sales rights, excluding Canada, for film “We Forgot to Break Up” and has launched sales at the Cannes Film Festival’s market.
Based on Kayt Burgess’s award-winning book “Heidegger Stairwell,” and written by Noel S. Baker, Pat Mills and Zoe Whittall, the film follows a diverse group of musicians who form a band to spark a musical revolution. As their band, “The New Normals,” rises to fame, they navigate personal and romantic complexities, creating a rock sound that transcends gender and orientation. “We Forgot to Break Up” aims to offer an authentic portrayal of music, love, and friendship in the early 2000s indie music scene as the protagonists strive to make their voices heard and forge an unshakable bond that transcends labels.

There has never been so much behind-the-scenes BBC coverage of Doctor Who. “The Star Beast” ran for a single hour, but already has an in-episode commentary from David Tennant and producers Phil Collinson and Vicki Delow, a half-hour instalment of companion show Doctor Who: Unleashed, plus a half-hour official accompanying podcast. And that’s on top of all the interviews, features and in-depth looks from Doctor Who Magazine. Seekers of nerdy insights – our cup runneth seriously over.
For each of the three anniversary specials, and then continuing through Christmas 2023 and series fourteen, we can watch the episode, watch it again with the commentary, listen to the podcast and catch up with Steffan Powell’s exclusive Unleashed coverage. Do all that and you’ll probably need some kind of energy drink and a biscuit, but the fun titbits below are a taste of what you can glean.

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who: The Star Beast.
The first of the new David Tennant and Catherine Tate-fronted episodes is called simply “The Star Beast”, a title it shares with the 1980 Doctor Who Weekly comic strip (published in the US by Marvel Comics as “Stan Lee Presents: Doctor Who”) “Doctor Who and the Star Beast”, featuring the Fourth Doctor as played by Tom Baker.
The TV special stars Miriam Margolyes as the voice of the fluffy alien “Beep the Meep”, who first appeared in that comic. And if we put the poster for the special alongside the cover of that comic (see above) there are… similarities.
It wouldn’t be the first time the Doctor Who TV series has adapted stories from other mediums. The most famous example would be when Paul Cornell was invited to adapt the Seventh Doctor novel he had written for Virgin New Adventures,...

Comicbook writer Garth Ennis, best known for series such as “Preacher” and “The Boys,” and his nine-year stint at Marvel, is a guest of this week’s Lucca Comics & Games. Ennis, whose current work includes comedy Barbarian strip “Babs,” and the latest instalments of the “Battle Action” and “Punisher” series, spoke about his new book “Partisan,” as well as diverse topics including religion and war.
“[In ‘Partisan’], Steve [Epting] and I explored a similar territory to that of ‘Sara.’ It’s about a woman who finds herself caught in the fighting between Russian partisans and the German invaders in Ukraine from 1942 onwards,” Ennis said.
“Our heroine, with her husband having been called up by the army, finds herself raising two kids alone. Caught in this conflict, she joins the partisans for no other reason than keeping her kids alive. She finds herself doing the most extreme things, purely in the interest of her family.

For those unfamiliar with Tubi, they are a completely free streaming service which has an absolutely ridiculous selection of films, many of which offered in high quality high-definition transfers. For those not in the know, they are also one of the services that pays filmmakers the best and are very open to smaller budget films. They do present the films with ads, but that is a small price to pay for a great selection of fun films. Scrolling their offerings by genre is also the closest one can get to the video store experience of yesteryears. Here’s a list of five fun action movies on Tubi, kind of like a “Staff Suggestions” section at your local Mom & Pop video store.

With John Wick: Chapter 4 exploding at the box office and Donnie Yen experience a new wave of popularity in North American, now’s the time to look at another of the movie’s stars who’s been around for a long time but is consistently underrated. Of course, that man is the great Scott Adkins! Those who know him, love him. With over 70 movies to his credit, the man has been in at least one thing everyone has seen, from Doctor Strange to X-Men Origins: Wolverine (as Weapon X), The Pink Panther, and so many more, He has been in something for everyone. For us, the highlights of his career are not necessarily the obvious titles when glancing at his resume.
Here are our some of our favorite Scott Adkins movies:
The Expendables 2 (2012)
Admittedly not as good as the first film, The Expendables 2 did bring a few good villains to the screen.

Doctor Who was filled with surprises this year. First was the announcement that Russell T. Davies, the man most responsible for bringing Doctor Who back to television in 2005, would be returning as showrunner. Then came the special “The Power of the Doctor,” which saw Jodie Whittaker regenerate not into Ncuti Gatwa, slated to play the next Doctor, but into former Doctor David Tennant, who will star in a 60th Anniversary three-parter next November.
Joining Tennant will be his third companion Donna Noble, played again by Catherine Tate. But the first teaser for the upcoming episodes hints at the return of even more unlikely characters from the Time Lord’s past.
The teaser highlights the expected fallout of the Doctor’s regeneration, as Tennant plays a confused Fourteenth Doctor battling aliens and Gatwa’s soon-to-be Fifteenth Doctor asks just what the hell is going on here. Before Gatwa’s arrival, Tennant...

Not all comic-book movies have to be about superheroes or heroes at all for that matter. Case in point: Accident Man. Originally debuting in a series of comic strips in the 90s, Accident Man was created by Pat Mills and Tony Skinner – two legends of the UK comics scene. For those not familiar with the Mills and Skinner creation, Mike Fallon is a hitman, a stone-cold killer and the best at what he does. Yet he’s no ordinary hitman. Instead, Fallon has a very particular style of assassination: all of his jobs are completed by making it look like the target was killed simply by accident… Hence the name Accident Man.

Warning: contains potential spoilers for the 60th Anniversary Special
In June 2022, photos from location filming in Cardiff yielded some images of creatures that will appear (barring a hilarious amount of misdirection) during Doctor Who’s 60th Anniversary. If you don’t want to know any more, stop reading now.
In the Summer 2022 issue of Doctor Who Magazine Russell T. Davies, showrunner and writer for the anniversary, commented: “Some monsters might be glimpsed. Monsters which might well be familiar to readers of Dwm. Well, familiar, but new. Whatever that means.”
This appears to confirms the appearance of Beep the Meep and the Wrarth Warriors who originally featured in a Doctor Who Weekly comic strip in 1980.
Given recent #DoctorWho location filming for the 60th, it seems we’ll be getting some returning niche monsters from ‘80s comics – Wrarth Warriors & #beepthemeep! Thoughts?...

Canadian Firms Team For Animated Series
Exclusive: Toronto production company Hawkeye Pictures and Ottawa’s Big Jump Entertainment are developing Brian Francis’s novel Fruit as an animated series. The novel was the runner-up for CBC’s Canada Reads in 2009. Set in 1984, Fruit follows the awkward misadventures of fat-and-fabulous 13-year-old Peter Paddington as he navigates life as a total outsider. Bullied everywhere, Peter has only two allies – his opinionated nipples who begin an unwelcome mentorship to help him survive junior high. Screenwriter/director Pat Mills (Guidance) is attached to adapt the novel into series. “We are thrilled to be working with Karen, Rick and the whole team at Big Jump, and with the amazing Pat Mills to bring Brian Francis’s funny and beautiful novel to the screen. The Hateful Straights: Mills Finds Bigots in the Backwoods in Exploitation Effort
One of the many silver linings of genre filmmaking is the powerful ability of subtext. However, there’s a formidable power in siphoning the subtext to the foreground in compelling ways, like The Stepford Wives (1975) or Get Out (2017), which formulate their own niche of persuasively terrifying social issue horror. However, there’s also a fine line between eloquence and exploitation, and the latest film from Canadian filmmaker Pat Mills, The Retreat, gravitates towards the latter. It’s a far cry from Mills’ previous output, who heretofore reveled in showcasing teen pariahs embracing their freak flags in intriguing ways, such as his 2014 standalone debut Guidance (read review) and 2017’s Don’t Talk to Irene (2017).…...

Hot on the heels of Death Ranch, which features a group of racists who torture and kill strangers, comes this film from Pat Mills, which features a group of homophobes who torture and kill strangers. The tone is very different. There are a lot films out there about hunting humans, but as Mills has pointed out, relatively little has been done on this theme. This is in itself a reason to keep the story straightforward - many viewers will be new to the subject so there's less room to make use of established cinematic language. It also provides an opportunity to show straight viewers how it can feel to face persistent homophobia in more ordinary circumstances.
We're introduced to the situation by a prologue which follows a gay male couple travelling to the titular retreat, which has been advertised as gay-friendly, only to find themselves in trouble. They're friends of one.

The idea of a horror host is almost as old as the horror genre itself, dating all the way back to radio serials where an in-character narrator would ensure that the audience stuck around between stories; television viewers are similarly familiar with the notion, with names like Elvira, Mistress of the Night and Svengoolie transcending the B-movies they introduced on a weekly basis. It’s in comic books, however, that the horror host has truly blossomed, with characters like The Crypt Keeper, Uncle Creepy, and DC’s Cain and Abel becoming as famous — if not more so — than the stories they foisted upon the unsuspecting reader.
Amongst the scores of comic hosts, one holds an especially dear place in the heart of a generation of British readers: Misty, the cover star and fictional editor of the short-lived horror weekly of the same name, which ran from 1978 through 1980. The only constant...

The legendary 2000Ad artist has passed away.
Carlos Ezquerra, the Spanish artist who co-created Judge Dredd for 2000Ad, has died at the age of 70.
The sad news was confirmed on the 2000Ad website, who posted a photo of Ezquerra at his drawing desk.
“One of the all-time greatest comic book artists, the Spanish illustrator was one of the titans of 2000Ad,” read the tribute.
“Modest and unassuming, Carlos was nonetheless a legend whose contribution to the global comic book industry cannot be understated. His distinctive style - characterised by breathtakingly dynamic, high-energy storytelling and the distinctive ridged thick inking that outlined so many key moments - was instantly recognizable.
“Despite a brush with lung cancer in 2010, he continued to work and, although the cancer returned this year it was believed he was recovering well. His sudden death is a profound loss not just to 2000Ad but to the comic book medium.

Not all comic-book movies have to be about superheroes… or heroes at all for that matter. Case in point: Accident Man. Originally debuting in a series of comic strips in the 90s UK comic Toxic!, Accident Man was created by Pat Mills and Tony Skinner – two legends of the UK comics scene who, beside this character, penned stories or Judge Dredd and ABC Warriors. In fact Mills is one of creators of 2000Ad, a British institution that has already seen success outside of the comics realm, with numerous video games based on characters within its pages and not one but two Judge Dredd movies!

The UK comics scene in the 80s was a mixture of playground larks, smart alec troublesome kids, weekly toy advertisements, immaculate footballers and wartime nostalgia. It was boom time for the Beanos, Dandys and many more Saturday morning doormat slappers. But there was a change coming, and spurred on by the noxious odour of Viz and the dystopian adult themes of 2000Ad a new breed of comics came of age in the final decade of the twentieth century.
These new comics catered for kids who had grown up with Dennis the Menace and were ready for something a bit more mature. 1991 was the fateful year, when the Fleetway backed Crisis was joined by 2000Ad man Kevin Mills teaming up with Apocalypse Ltd to bring Toxic! to newspaper shops across the UK. Though these comics didn’t last as long as those whose pages they sat alongside they were potent enough...

As you’re no doubt well aware, comic book movies are all the rage these days. While we still get the odd dud, the genre continues going from strength to strength and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is at the forefront of that right now.
However, while we all know who characters like Captain America, Spider-Man, and The Hulk are from our childhoods, there are a lot of comic books out there you probably haven’t heard of. The question is, do you know which of your favourites movies are based on them?
Accident Man is one such film, adapted by Stu Small and Scott Adkins from the Toxic comic strips by Pat Mills and Tony Skinner, and directed by Jesse Johnson, it arrives on Home Entertainment formats this week. The Canadian indie “Don’t Talk to Irene” shows it’s possible to find a movie’s first 20 minutes immensely dislikable and its last 20 minutes assuredly winning; that it’s possible to tap your feet and roll your eyes at the same time as you recognize how you’re being played. Somewhere in between introducing, in a dumpster, the titular misfit teenage girl (newcomer Michelle McLeod), and sending her into the closing credits with a few Hughes-ian moments of justifiable pride, writer-director Pat Mills (“Guidance”) manages to overcome a weakness for twee snark and easy humiliation comedy to find a suitably amusing, even...

There's something quintessentially British about Mike Fallon, the high-class hitman at the center of Pat Mills' original Accident Man comic series from the early 90's. Orderly, deliberate and vicious, the character is like Jame Bond's sociopathic brother that everyone figures is a bit mad but no one can prove it. I don't know what that says about 15-year-old Scott Adkins, who discovered the character and fell in love with him, but Fallon has stayed with the action star until now when he's been able to realize his dream of bringing him to life on screen. Equally British in tone, Accident Man the movie feels at one with Guy Ritchie's wise guy movies as funny as they are thrilling. I had a chance to speak with...

In an interview just before he began shooting his sophomore feature, filmmaker Pat Mills dubbed it “Dirty Dancing meets Cocoon for girls with low self-esteem.” As droll loglines go, that’s a pretty accurate capsule description of Don’t Talk to Irene, which brings together teen misfits and cast-off seniors for a nasty-wholesome empowerment romp. The knack for biting dialogue that Mills brought to Guidance is still evident, although his new effort can’t match the bracing sting of his wickedly funny debut, which revolved around the filmmaker’s delirious performance as a role model so bad he was good.

As Geena Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival readies for its third edition, the fledgling Arkansas event is already pivoting to embrace other entertainment mediums beyond just films, all the better to serve their mission of bolstering diversity in the industry.
“Our tagline has evolved to be ‘championing women and diverse voices in media,’ because the lack of female characters and diverse characters exists in pretty much any form of the media,” said Davis, who co-founded the festival with Trevor Drinkwater, in an interview. During its first two years, Bentonville aimed to champion those voices specifically in film, but 2017 will turn the focus of the festival on other entertainment options, including an episodic section and a shorts competition

Writer/director Pat Mills was one of our favorite discoveries out of 2014 following the premiere of his debut Guidance at the Toronto International Film Festival (Strand distributed the film in late August of 2015 and it’s currently streaming on Netflix). The Toronto based filmmaker is already at work on his sophomore feature, Don’t Talk to Irene, a project which took home the Best Screenplay award at the 2013 Austin Film Festival. Returning once more to the developmental hell of high school, the film is a body positive teen dance movie about a 16 year old named Irene who dreams of becoming a cheerleader despite the cruelty of her peers. Pat Mills, who directed of Tiff'14 critically acclaimed "Guidance," did have the intention to hire Nicole Arbour to play a cheerleader in his upcoming film dealing with overweight teen empowerment: "Don't Talk to Irene.
This week Arbour was at the center of media storm after her YouTube video, "Dear Fat People," exploded online and exposed her views on overweight individuals.
After watching Nicole's video, here is Pat Mills statement:
My name is Pat Mills. I am a Toronto-based filmmaker in pre-production on my second feature film. It's a body-positive teen dance movie set in a retirement home. It's about a sixteen year old girl who dreams of being a cheerleader, but she is constantly bullied for being fat. She learns that she doesn't have to change anything about herself to be awesome because she already is. The title is "Don't Talk to Irene." We are scheduled to shoot next month.
I've been developing the script for several years. I am excited to shoot this - and the message is important to me. I'm gay. I was bullied a lot as a kid. I wore purple jogging pants every day during the seventh grade - you can imagine what that did to my social life. I am no stranger to ridicule and loneliness. It's made me a sensitive storyteller, but it also developed my sense of humour. And now I make comedy movies set in high school. I guess I never got over high school. Every filmmaker has an obsession, right?
"Don't Talk to Irene" is a dance movie, so obviously we needed a choreographer. We met with a woman who not only did traditional dance choreography, but was a cheerleader as well. She was fun and nice and had a lot of energy. She even had a YouTube channel and identified as a "youtuber". She seemed like a perfect fit for the project. I shared the script with her. She said she dug it and was excited to come on board. I was supposed to get together with her this week for what she called a "choreo party" to watch my favourite dance scenes and talk ideas. And then a crazy thing happened on Saturday - I saw something on the internet that made me never want to see her again. Her name is Nicole Arbour.
I was randomly checking Facebook and a comment on a video popped up. The video is called "Dear Fat People" - it's an unfunny and cruel fat-shaming video that guises itself about being about "health." It's fat phobic and awful. It went on for over for six minutes. I felt like I had been punched in the gut. I was so upset I was shaking like Shelley DuVall in the "The Shining."
Bullies like Nicole Arbour are the reason I am making this movie. I'm tired of body shaming. It's everywhere. This nice choreographer I met turned out to be the reason I wrote this movie. Her video added an offensive twist to the development of this film. I was shocked.
It's very odd that we live in a world now where people post their opinions on YouTube (to get views), but they cannot say these opinions to our faces. My film celebrates being different. It celebrates not fitting in. I want to arm teen girls of all sizes with confidence. People like Nicole Arbour strip this confidence away. She knew what my movie was about. Why couldn't she express these opinions to my face? I guess talking the old fashioned way won't get you internet-famous.
I've learned that the people who shame fat people hiding under an excuse that it's about their "health" are the same people who ridicule them when they see them working out at the gym.
Nicole: Did you even read my script? It is a body positive teen movie. It has a message that is in direct opposition to your cruel and lame YouTube rant.
On behalf of all of us who have been bullied and have a taste for comedy that doesn't make people feel shitty about themselves, "Fat shaming" is very much a thing. It's just as real as not getting a job because of your hateful opinions that you call "comedy." We will not be working together.
You are not hired for "Don't Talk to Irene."

And the hits keep on coming. YouTube star Nicole Arbour has reportedly been fired from a movie role just days after posting a controversial video titled "Dear Fat People." The Canadian comedian-actress shared the now-viral clip on Thursday, Sept. 3. The video was taken down after it garnered over 700,000 views — and a heap of backlash. Arbour claimed it was satire, but many people saw it as cruel. The director of her upcoming project, Pat Mills, also didn't find much humor in it. "[I’m making] a dance [...]...

Karma's a bitch. Days after posting a controversial video on YouTube titled "Dear Fat People"—where she jokes about obesity and even compares some overweight people to slow-moving zombies—Nicole Arbour is out of the job. It turns out that Pat Mills has decided to drop the YouTube star from an upcoming movie and told Zap2it why he never wants to see Arbour again. "[I'm making] a dance movie, so obviously we needed a choreographer. We met with a woman who not only did traditional dance choreography, but was a cheerleader as well. She was fun and nice and had a lot of energy," Mills told the site. "She seemed like a perfect fit for the project. I shared the...
