Todd McFarlane has been trying to get a new Spawn movie off the ground for years now, most recently promising big news for October 2022. And, well, it’s now October 2022…
As promised, McFarlane took to Twitter today to announce that “huge” Spawn movie news will be breaking tomorrow, October 4, tweeting out a crude Ms Paint drawing to go along with the tease. We have no idea what exactly this huge news will be, but with New York Comic-Con right around the corner, it’s only fitting that Spawn pops back up this week.
It’s been a long hard road out of development hell with his brand new Spawn feature, which most recently had Blumhouse attached. Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, had originally planned to direct the movie from his own screenplay, with Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner at one point signing on to star. Brian Tucker (Broken City...

The WGA East’s second Showrunner Academy gets underway today, with the 31-member class taking part in a program designed to support television writer-producers, upper-level writers and new show creators in honing the skills necessary to become successful showrunners and TV industry leaders.
The Academy, which provides instruction from current showrunners and other industry professionals on a wide range of topics, is led by Diana Son and Frank Pugliese.
“Being a showrunner is so much more than being the creative voice of the show,” Son said in a statement. “It’s also managing a multimillion-dollar endeavor with over 100 employees. We’re bringing in accomplished and experienced showrunners who’re willing to share the breadth of their experience – the good, bad and the ugly – so new showrunners can have a head start on figuring out what kind of showrunner they’re going to be.

2017-12-13T07:11:00-08:00Colin Jost, Michael Che Named 'Saturday Night Live' Head Writers
Saturday Night Live enjoyed critical acclaim, award wins and higher ratings last season thanks to its political sketches during the 2016 presidential election campaign. This season, however, ratings are starting to slide. It might be because the novelty of Alec Baldwin's Donald Trump impersonation is wearing off, or it might be because the show's writing is starting to decline in quality. Producer Lorne Michaels is betting on the latter, and he's trying to counter the problem by promoting Weekend Update hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che to Head Writer Positions. We'll see soon enough if the strategy pays off.

The Writers Guild Awards and the Academy writing nominees always don’t line up; many films are ineligible. This year, those included Oscar-writing nominees “Lion” and “The Lobster.”
This year, the WGA and the Academy differed dramatically. While the WGA deemed “Moonlight” and “Loving” as Original Screenplays, the Academy considered both as Adapted; only “Moonlight” landed a nomination.
At the WGA, as at the BAFTAs, Barry Jenkins’ script for “Moonlight” competed for the Original Screenplay Award against both Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea” and Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” Unlike the BAFTAs, Jenkins emerged the winner over Lonergan, a sign of strength for “Moonlight,” which is nominated for eight Oscars.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

You might not know Bryan Tucker by name, but you definitely know his work. Tucker, who started out as a stand-up, first wrote for The Chris Rock Show. From there, he did a short stint at MADtv and Tough Crowd With Colin Quinn. But he is better known for working on Chappelle's Show, where he was one of the few writers on staff. He then went on to Saturday Night Live, where he's been for ten years, becoming co–head writer in the spring of 2014. Last week, Tucker launched The Kicker, a sports-comedy website. The “Weekend Update” co-anchor and stand-up comic was last credited as head writer on May’s Season 40 finale, which was hosted by Louis Ck. At the beginning of this season, Jost chose to step down and focus on “Update.” Splitsider first reported that Bryan Tucker and Rob Klein currently split the role, not Jost. The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." According to TV Guide, the untitled family comedy, which has a script commitment from the network, would star Thompson as a man who moves in with his in-laws. Another member of the SNL team, writer Bryan Tucker, is writing the script and will executive produce with Thompson, Michaels and Andrew Singer (30 Rock). This would mark Thompson’s return to comedy series, where he first rose to fame on Nickelodeon with All That and its spinoff Kenan & Kel. It was Jeff Bayer’s turn to write the summary for Episode 79 of Movie B.S with Bayer and Snider, but he forgot to do it before he left for the airport and Eric D. Snider had to do it instead. This is really symptomatic of the problems in Jeff and Eric’s professional relationship, and it’s only a matter of time before it comes to a head. In the meantime, on the show they both raved about “50/50,” the funny and touching cancer comedy-drama starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen. Both critics also agreed on “Dream House”: it’s terrible. They both liked the gory horror comedy “Tucker and Dale vs. Evil,” too, though Eric liked it more than Jeff did. See? This is what I’m talking about. A perfectly good horror comedy like “Tucker and Dale vs. Evil,” and Jeff doesn’t appreciate it. He’s ungrateful.

We have two big sequels this week on Movie B.S. with Bayer and Snider. “The Hangover Part II” is a pretty close copy of the first film, with somewhat diminishing returns. “Kung Fu Panda 2,” on the other hand, is a worthy follow-up, with a good story and everything. Then we have a guest: “Saturday Night Live” writer Bryan Tucker, who’s been with the show six years and has plenty of inside scoop about how “SNL” comes into existence every week.

Oliver Stone is assembling Savages, which adapts the book of the same name by Don Winslow and has Aaron Johnson and Taylor Kitsch set to star as best friends and pot growers who get roped into working for a drug cartel when the bad guys kidnap their friend/girlfriend. Salma Hayek is a possible pick to be the matriarch of the drug cartel, and Benicio Del Toro is now signing on to play the cartel's enforcer, who sets the kidnapping, and therefore the plot, in motion. Some script work is being done now by Oliver Stone, Don Winslow and Shane Salerno, and there are ongoing discussions with a couple of studios to pick up the project -- Universal seems like the likely home right now. [Deadline [1]] After the break, new gigs for Emma Robers, Kenan Thompson and the new Jason Voorhees, Derek Mears. Emma Roberts will be really noticable soon in Scream 4,...

If you live anywhere outside of the United States it is likely that you will not have heard of Kenan Thompson. The reason for this is that his renown comes almost exclusively from his long-time employment in unaccountably popular Us entertainment and sketch show Saturday Night Live. A programme which is renowned for- with a few notable exceptions, particularly Wayne’s World- turning out a long list of terrible spin-off movies and comedy “vehicles” for its cast members, a recent and typical example of which is MacGruber.
Several of the series former stars have gone on to fame and fortune, others to obscurity and one, in the case of Adrienne Johnson, has gone on to become a barely employable ranting reactionary bigot. The next step for these people, therefore, is often fraught with danger, and Thompson’s big screen project sounds similarly precarious. Deadline say Thompson will star in Parmamount...

Saturday Night Live player Kenan Thompson is getting his own feature vehicle, Party Starters, penned by Bryan Tucker, one of the writers working at the long-running NBC sketch show, and produced by SNL creator Lorne Michaels. The movie will revolve around Kenan as one of those for-hire "party guys" who runs around the dance floor at bar mitzvahs and weddings and stuff and makes old people dance.
Kenan is probably best known for the Deep House Dish sketches and Bill Cosby impression, so you gotta wonder if Michaels is making a good choice letting the former All That child star carry a whole film. For every good SNL movie (Wayne's World) there are a bunch of flops (Pat, Master Of Disguise, The Ladies' Man).

As a child of the early 90's, it's been enjoyable to watch Kenan Thompson grow from a budding young comedy star on shows like "All That" and "Kenan & Kel" to an adult on "Saturday Night Live" one of the most iconic sketch comedy shows in history. Now the actor may be setting up a launch from "SNL" as executive producer Lorne Michaels has set Thompson to lead a comedy called Party Starters. The iconic comedy producer has been integral in launching the careers of people like Bill Murray, Chris Farley, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and more. This film will be kept in the "SNL" family too as series writer Bryan Tucker is behind the script. No director is mentioned in Deadline's story, and no story details are revealed, but if I had to guess, I think it's likely that Thompson starts some sort of business to get people's boring ass...

Once Saturday Night Live’s lone “representative of the black race,” (now there are 2 of them) comedian/actor Kenan Thompson is in negotiations to star in a feature-length film, written by SNL writer Bryan Tucker, and produced by longtime SNL head honcho, Lorne Michaels.
Described as an “original high concept comedy,” the film is titled Party Starters.
Nothing further on the plot, or who else is attached to the project, whether in front of behind the camera. But with a title like Party Starters, Kenan’s usual shtick and brand of humor (although, frankly, I don’t find him funny at all; rather irritating actually), and the fact that the film comes out of the SNL creative factory, I’m not expecting much here; though I’m certainly willing to be pleasantly surprised.

Exclusive: It's become tradition for members of the Saturday Night Live cast to get their shots in features put together by the show's longtime executive producer Lorne Michaels. The latest? Kenan Thompson, who's at the center of a deal for Party Starters, an original high-concept comedy set up at Paramount Pictures about that sort of entertainer guy who gets the old people up to dance at weddings and keeps the party rolling. Pic will be scripted by SNL writer Bryan Tucker. Thompson is a six-season cast member best known for his Bill Cosby impersonation and his "What's Up With That?" and "Scared Straight" sketches. Michaels and John Goldwyn will produce. It's Thompson's first go-around in an SNL-generated film. He has been accumulating credits since he was a child actor on the Nickelodeon shows Kenan & Kel and All That, the latter of which spawned the feature Good Burger. Thompson is...

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

Brillstein Entertainment Partners has hired former New York-based William Morris agent Brian Stern to become a manager in the company's Gotham headquarters in Tribeca. Bep opened its New York outpost last fall, setting veteran manager Stacy O'Neil to head it. The Writers Guild of America honored The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air at their ceremony on Saturday night, firmly establishing the films as front-runners in their respective Oscar categories.
Mark Boal certainly deserves the accolades after embedding himself with an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team in Baghdad in 2004 and turning his journalist findings into a dramatic original screenplay. In his speech Boal thanked director Kathryn Bigelow for supporting “an unpopular story about an unpopular war that has now lasted twice as long as WWII with no end in sight.”
Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner picked up the prize for their adaptation of Walter Kirn’s novel, and Mark Monroe won for the moving documentary The Cove.
The WGA Awards are a somewhat reliable indicator of the Academy Awards. ”Original Screenplay” has matched 10 out of the last 15 years, and “Adapted” has lined up 11 of 15, including Milk and Slumdog Millionaire last year.
