Jeff Buckley’s rare demo “Sky Blue Skin” has finally been released. Recorded at the late singer’s final studio session on September 13th, 1996, the track has been sought after by fans and collectors for two decades.
The stripped-down song clocks in at nearly six minutes, with Buckley’s vocals swimming through a funereal abyss. “I already see the ghosts on the sidewalk/Kissing in the hereafter,” he sings, before repeating, “Chances are you wouldn’t even recognize the man I am now.” The final seconds feature a snippet of Buckley talking in the studio.

As the sole album Jeff Buckley completed during his brief lifetime, Grace offers a tantalizing look at the unfulfilled promise of one of the Nineties’ most striking talents. Showcasing the singer-songwriter’s technical virtuosity and soaring multi-octave range, the tracks brim with the fervent energy of a musical polyglot who seemed torn between desires to be a chanteuse or a headbanger. Drawing elements from jazzy torch singers, heavy-metal guitar heroes, poets, punks, and Pakistani Qawwali vocalists, it’s a sound that welcomes all, yet defies definition.
Then again, Buckley was always wary of categorization.

The musician, who died in a swimming accident in 1997, is the subject of three forthcoming movies
Age: Forever 30.
Appearance: Sensitive, handsome doomed musician.
Oh dear. Is this a sad story? I'm afraid it is. Buckley was a singer-songwriter who spent years mustering the courage to record his brilliant first album, Grace, in 1994. It is now almost unbearably poignant because he died in a swimming accident in 1997 before finishing a second one.
How terrible yet glamorous. You might say that his life describes an almost perfect Aristotelian tragic arc. To be honest, I doubt I would. Although that would explain why there are now three Buckley movies on the way.
Three? I'll count again … Yes, three. The first one will be Greetings from Tim Buckley, which juxtaposes Jeff's life with the life of his father Tim, also a famous musician who died young. That was first shown at the Toronto film festival last September,...

Hallelujah! Jeff Buckley finally has a mother.
Patricia Arquettehas reportedly signed on to play Mary Guibert, Jeff's mother, in Jake Scott's upcoming Jeff Buckley biopic starring Reeve Carney. According to Variety, Arquette will mostly appear in childhood flashbacks; but the role is not to be taken lightly. After all, Guibert was the one responsible kick-starting her son's career when she convinced him to perform in a 1991 tribute concert to his father Tim Buckley.
As for what the real Mary Guibert thinks of Scott's casting decisions, she couldn't be happier to have the "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" actor as her "son." "We are over the moon that Reeve has agreed to take on this challenging role," she told Comingsoon.net. "I've seen him perform several times... he's been getting ready for this all his life. It certainly doesn't hurt that he looks so much like Jeff."

We.ve reached the point in Patricia Arquette.s career where the True Romance star is playing someone.s mother? Sheesh, I.m old. But Variety has attached 43-year-old Arquette.s name to the role of Jeff Buckley.s mom, Mary Guibert, in a planned biopic for the late musician (played by Reeve Carney of Broadway.s Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark). The trade makes an interesting True Romance connection, though. That film was directed by Tony Scott back in 1993, while Tony.s son, Jake, is on the hook to direct the Buckley biopic. Apparently the Scott family counts themselves as Arquette fans, and rightfully so. Though the part that she.ll play in Jake.s film is little more than a cameo, appearing in a few flashback scenes and present-day shots, where she acts as the driving force to get her son, Jeff, to perform at a tribute concert...

The latest on the Hollywood grapevine is that Patricia Arquette is on board to play the role of Jeff Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert. The upcoming biopic of the tragic singer’s life is being directed by Jake Scott and he has already found his leading man in Reeve Carney, (he of The Tempest fame.) The movie is rumoured to be called Mystery White Boy, the film follows Buckley’s life and career which was cut short by his tragic death at the age of 30. With other Buckley tribute projects underway such as Greetings from Tim Buckley it seems this offering will be well received as it has the blessing of the real life Mary Guibert and the director also has access to personal archives and key permission to use Buckley’s classic version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. This will be Arquette’s second collaboration with the director; she...

The news comes just days after we learned that Adam Brody had been cast [2] in the corresponding role in Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman's competing project Lovelace, which features Amanda Seyfried in the lead role. The script for Inferno, also by Wilder, is based on Lovelace's 1980 memoir Ordeal.

Patricia Arquette has agreed to play Jeff Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert, in a cameo in Jake Scott's untitled biopic of the late musician reports Variety.
Arquette will be seen in both flashback and present day as Guibert, who convinces her son to attend his father's 1991 tribute concert "Greetings From Tim Buckley," which is widely recognized as Jeff Buckley's first real public appearance in New York.
Reeve Carney stars in the role and shooting kicks off this Spring in New York City and Memphis. This is not to be confused with the rival project "Greetings From Tim Buckley" starring Penn Badgley as Jeff.

Director Jake Scott has already found the man he wants to play Jeff Buckley in a new biopic of the tragic cult folk star: The Tempest’s Reeve Carney. And now he’s slowly building the ensemble around that actor-shaped focal point, with Patricia Arquette in the small yet pivotal role of Mary Guibert, Buckley’s mother. The film, which according to whatever source you believe is either untitled or called Mystery White Boy, will follow Buckley’s life and cruelly short career from his early musical days and his mother’s encouragement to his tragic death at 30 in 1997.Scott has the advantage over fellow Buckley biopic-makers (competing project Greetings From Tim Buckley has Penn Badgley up as Jeff), as he’s not only got the blessing of the real Mary Guibert, but also access to Buckley Jr’s music and personal archives, including key permission to use the now...

Any development surrounding either Jeff Buckley film hasn’t come for close to four and a half months, but this recent update on Jake Scott‘s untitled take is nonetheless encouraging. According to Variety, Patricia Arquette will join Reeve Carney in the role of Mary Guibert, the musician’s mother. You’d think that, being the second person to sign on — and with a role of this nature — she’d be a major player; Variety says that this is only a cameo, however, with the biggest part involving the mother convincing “her son to attend his father’s 1991 tribute concert ‘Greetings From Tim Buckley.’”
It’s somewhat odd to find an actor for a minor part this early on, though the involvement of Guibert herself probably relates to this casting, one way or the other. And, although I used the word “encouraging” at the beginning of the article, it was...

There’s new movement over on Jake Scott’s upcoming Jeff Buckley biopic, which may or may not have been titled Mystery White Boy. We’ve already reported that Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark’s Reeve Carney is set to star as the indie rock legend, and now there’s word that Patricia Arquette has been signed to play Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert. The role is said to be a small one, but it sounds important nonetheless. Arquette will be seen both in flashbacks to when Buckley was a child and in later years when he was an adult. And apparently she plays an important role in convincing Buckley to appear during a 1991 tribute concert to his father, “Greetings From Tim Buckley,” which was considered to be Jeff’s first public performance and kind of the launching point for what became a very notable career. This is the stuff of alt-rock legend, so...

Music biopics are by and large formulaic, strained and unimaginative, despite sometimes featuring Oscar-winning performances (Jamie Foxx in Ray, Reese Witherspoon in Walk The Line). In fact, those two films I just mentioned perfectly illustrate my point: they have the exact same plot, despite centering on two equally great musicians who were wildly different from each other. The two competing films based on the short, brilliant life of singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley have the potential to transcend those limits and approach the epic scale of Amadeus or the mad joy of creation found in the great Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould.

Auditioning to play the part of a revered musician and much-loved rock icon would be intimidating but having the support of the late singer-songwriter's mother would likely lessen the burden of bringing the man to life on the big screen.
It was announced last week that Reeve Carney, the star of big budget, shambolic Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark, was selected to play Jeff Buckley in Jake Scott's upcoming unnamed biopic, and he seemed to have the looks - boyishly handsome - and the chops - he plays in the band Carney and opened for U2 - to pull off the role of the beloved, tragic performer, but now with word that he and Mary Guibert, Buckley's mother and executive producer on the film, struck up a friendship some two year ago and she personally called him to tell him that he'd won the role, it seems meant to be.

Carney is set to star in a still-untitled film about the "Last Goodbye" singer. It's set to begin production this November and is being helmed by "Welcome to the Rileys" director Jake Scott, who noted that Carney has "the perfect combination of musical prodigy, impish charm, innate intelligence and sensitivity to play Jeff." Carney will do all his own singing.

Reeve Carney has been cast as Jeff Buckley in a new biopic of the late singer. The actor previously appeared in the troubled Broadway production Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Director Jake Scott's untitled biopic has been approved by the singer's mother and given exclusive access to his songs and personal archive, Collider reports. Buckley's mother Mary Guibert said in an official statement: "We are over the moon that Reeve has agreed to take on this challenging role. I've seen him perform several times. "He's been getting ready for this all his life. It certainly doesn't hurt that he looks so much like Jeff." Scott added: "We are excited to have found in Reeve the perfect (more)...

After much speculation, relative unknown Reeve Carney has been chosen to play the now-legendary Jeff Buckley in a biopic directed by Jake Scott and written by Ryan Jaffe. The filmmakers have been granted access to Buckley's music and personal archives, and Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert, will serve as an executive producer on the film.
Carney is best known as Peter Parker in the ill-fated and oft-ridiculed "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" musical on Broadway. He performed "Rise Above," a song from the show, with Bono and The Edge in the finale of the most recent "American Idol" season. Carney's band, Carney (we know) opened for U2's tour this year as well.

The Jake Scott version of Jeff Buckley biopic has finally found its leading man. The "Welcome to the Rileys" director has chosen Reeve Carney to portray the late musician in the project which is still untitled.
Explaining his reason to pick the 28-year-old actor, who sounds not familiar in Hollywood, Scott said, "We are excited to have found in Reeve the perfect combination of musical prodigy, impish charm, innate intelligence and sensitivity to play Jeff." Carney himself is best known for playing Peter Parker a.k.a Spider-Man in the Broadway show "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark".
Moreover, Buckley's mother Mary Guibert, who serves as executive producer for the project, also gave her approval for Carney. "We are over the moon that Reeve has agreed to take on this challenging role," Guibert said, before adding, "He's been getting ready for this all his life. Dueling biopics don’t come along that often, but we’ll be getting a few in the near future when Jake Scott goes up against Daniel Algrant and Penn Badgley with their respective biopics of singer Jeff Buckley. (There’s a third one in development, titled A Pure Drop, that Brendan Fletcher will direct, but we haven’t heard too much about it and it still seems early for that.) Scott‘s version has just landed its lead, with Deadline reporting that Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark star Reeve Carney will play him in the currently-untitled film.
This take on the musician’s life has a big advantage over all the others: the rights to the music. To be fair to Algrant‘s version, Greetings from Tim Buckley, that “takes place at a tribute concert performed before Jeff Buckley generated his own solo songs,” which means that the music he...

Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark Broadway star Reeve Carney has nabbed the role of Jeff Buckley that A-listers were drooling over. Carney got the part over Twilight star Robert Pattinson and Rise of the Planet of the Apes star James Franco.
Jeff Buckley was a revered singer-songwriter whose life was cut short at the age of 30 when he drowned in the Wolf River in Memphis, Tennessee. He only released one album, but it contained his version of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, and is considered a modern classic.
Pattinson had lobbied hard for the job and was even endorsed by Buckley’s mother at one point. No stranger to music, Pattinson has contributed several songs on the soundtracks from The Twilight Saga. But, for Pattinson, the role of Buckley is not to be.

While "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" took a while to get started, its Spidey star, Reeve Carney, doesn't seem like he'll have any trouble sticking around in the future.
Deadline reports that Carney has signed on to play Jeff Buckley in Jake Scott's untitled film about the singer-songwriter.
Though Buckley died at the young at of 30--just as his solo career was taking off--there have been three films about him. Scott's film, however, endeavors to be the end-all be-all Buckley biopic.
The untitled project has exclusive rights to all of the singer's music and personal archives, including the go-ahead from Sony to cover Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"--perhaps his most well-know ditty. Adding further credibility, the Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert, is executive producer on the project.
While portraying a musical legend is no easy feat, Scott had no doubts that Carney was the man for the job. He described...

There seems to be countless movie Snow Whites in the works (Kristen Stewart's, Lily Collins', China's, etc.). But there are only two movie projects about singer Jeff Buckley, who drowned at the age of 30 while swimming in Tennessee's Wolf River in 1997. One, Greetings from Tim Buckley, is set to star Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley as Jeff Buckley. The other, it has been announced, will star Broadway actor-singer Reeve Carney as Buckley. Carney, who played Prince Ferdinand in Helen Mirren's The Tempest and the young Ethan Hawke in Snow Falling on Cedars, is best known for his Broadway incarnation of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. To be directed by Jake Scott, son of Ridley Scott and best known for the Kristen Stewart-James Gandolfini drama Welcome to the Rileys, this as-yet untitled Jeff Buckley project is being executive produced by Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert.

The star of Broadway's "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" is taking on another iconic -- and musical -- role. Reeve Carney has been cast as Jeff Buckley in the biopic based on the deceased singer's life. He will be led by director Jake Scott, who was behind "Welcome to the Rileys," and it has the backing of Buckley's estate: his mother and executive producer Mary Guibert and Jeff Buckley Music exec and associate producer Alison Raykovich. Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark star Reeve Carney is official on board to play Jeff Buckley in a new biopic being developed by Welcome to the Riley's director Jake Scott. I have no idea if Carney is a good actor or not, but I am looking forward to seeing this film. I'm a big fan of Buckley's music, and I think his life will make for a solid film. Obviously so do a few filmmakers, as of right now there are two other Jeff Buckley biopics in the works. Greetings From Tim Buckley, which is being directed by Dan Algrant. This is the first film to go into production which starts a 4-week shoot Monday in Brooklyn. The other film is called A Pure Drop and it is being directed by Brendan Fletcher out of Australia. The film is based on A Pure Drop: The Life of Jeff Buckley.

[1] Gossip Girl actor Penn Badgley has been tapped to star as Jeff Buckley in a new biopic about the singer-songwriter. No, not that one [2] -- the other one. In true Hollywood fashion, there are currently two Buckley-based projects in the works: the one Jake Scott's making with Buckley's mother Mary Guibert as executive producer, and this one, directed by Daniel Algrant (Naked in New York). Scott's film will be look at Buckley's (tragically brief) life and career arc, whereas Algrant's will focus on Buckley's breakthrough performance at a 1991 tribute concert for his father, the late Tim Buckley. According to The Playlist [3], Algrant's will also include a romance between Buckley and a working at the concert. I really only know Badgley from Easy A and the handful of Gossip Girl episodes I've seen, and I can't say he's ever left a strong impression on me. (Well -- I hated his Gossip Girl character,...

"Penn is not involved in the film at all," Williams told the Los Angeles Times. And he's still not! In that film. But Badgley has been cast as the iconic musician in Greetings from Tim Buckley.
