There were a few years there when Brad Pitt's pretty face caused many of us to overlook the actor's considerable talent. Pitt's performance in Terry Gilliam's "12 Monkeys," coming hot on the heels of his wrenching turn in "Se7en," helped us forget all about his sheaths of wheat-colored hair.
The fabulous time-traveling trip is coming to SyFy, and Pitt and "12 Monkeys" co-star Bruce Willis are producers. Of course, that could mean anything, from them simply loaning their names to the credits to actually making sure that SyFy doesn't mess around with the sci-fi fave.
"12 Monkeys" will star Aaron Stanford as a character that sounds similar, if not the same as, Willis's character. As James Cole, Willis went back in time to investigate the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, a radical organization devoted to animal rights and other causes; they also have their paws on a virus that, in the future,...

Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys is the latest feature film to be turned into a television series...
Fargo, From Dusk Till Dawn, and now Twelve Monkeys... The TV drama landscape will soon be unrecognisable from the 'New Releases' shelf of a branch of Blockbusters circa 1996.
Twelve Monkeys (itself inspired by sixties French short La Jetée) is the latest movie to be given a small screen adaptation, this time by Syfy, which has just ordered a dozen episodes of the time travel virus drama.
The original film, as if any of you need telling, was released in 1995 and starred Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt and Madeleine Stowe. It told the story of a future world devastated by a deadly virus that wiped out most of mankind. Convict James Cole (Bruce Willis) is chosen to sit in a special chair attached halfway up a wall and to go back in time to discover,...

The monologue. It’s the time where an actor either rises to the occasion or crashes and burns (and usually takes the film with them.) When done right, the effect of the monologue can change our perspectives, be devastatingly terrific, riotous, or inspiring. And when done right, it does them all at one point or another. In no particular order, here are some monologues we really like, ranging from the funny to the tragic—but do not, however, take this as the end-all-be-all of great monologues. If you love some we didn’t put on this list, leave them in the comments! Brad Pitt as Jeffrey Goines in “Twelve Monkeys”It seems like Pitt’s character in “Twelve Monkeys” is in perpetual monologue mode, only adding to the greatness of his performance. While in a mental institution, his ramblings to Bruce Willis’ character James Cole on society’s gluttony and materialistic focus,...

Familiar themes from Brazil and Twelve Monkeys litter the dystopian landscape of Gilliam's ramshackle sci-fi drama
Terry Gilliam's latest begins with a naked man wrestling with a steam-punk console in an abandoned church, feverishly awaiting a call (from God?) on a wiry future-retro phone. Meet Qohen Leth, the bastard son of Sam Lowry and James Cole, enlisted by his corporate employer to solve the titular theorem and prove that all life is meaningless while attempting to alleviate his suffering via the all-engulfing portals of a cybersex site.
Although Gilliam has publicly debunked a supposed "trilogy" connection with Brazil and Twelve Monkeys, it's clear that screenwriter Pat Rushin has been marinated in the director's back catalogue, with riffs and preoccupations from previous works (wheezing machinery; intrusive surveillance; man against the state; imagination v reality) littering the landscape. From Waltz's shaven head to his worriedly distracted manner, we know this character – or,...

A few weeks ago we reported that 12 Monkeys movie is getting a TV adaptation, today – we’re back to say it’s official! We’ve just learned that Syfy has greenlit the 60-minute pilot which will, just like the 1995 film, center on a convicted criminal (originally played by Bruce Willis) living in a grim post-apocalyptic future. Ready or not, new James Cole is coming! Unfortunately – still nothing about the cast, but at least we know that Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett stand behind the script (and will also produce the project) while Jon Cassar is on board to direct the whole thing. As we...

Syfy announced that it's working on turning Terry Gilliam's 1995 film "12 Monkeys" into a TV series. "We have a great pilot. We're now flushing out what the rest of the series might be," said the network. The movie starred Bruce Willis as James Cole, a convicted criminal in a post-apocalyptic future where the Earth's population is forced to live underground after a deadly virus. In an attempt to earn a pardon, Cole uses the imperfect science of time travel to help collect information on the virus released by the Army of the Twelve Monkeys. The film co-starred Brad Pitt, who earned an Oscar nomination. Producer Chuck Roven (The Dark Knight, 12 Monkeys) initially submitted the pitch to Syfy, which is planning to take "12 Monkey" straight to series. Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett ("Terra Nova") will write the script, while Jon Cassar ("24") will direct.

"It's a return to our roots in terms of science fiction: cool, interesting push-the-genre science fiction" Mark Stern, Head of Original Programming at Syfy
Cool, original, and push-the-genre is just how we like our science fiction, so Mark Stern's recent words at this weekend's Sdcc are like John Williams music to our alien robot ears. His most recently announced project - a TV adaptation of Terry Gilliam's 1995 12 Monkeys - promises to tick at least two of those boxes (and potentially a third depending on your view on what makes something original).
Syfy's rebooted Battlestar Galactica is very much the template for this new project, which is currently being planned to start with a ninety-minute pilot before talk of a full season order. Producers of the original film,...

Terry Gilliam's 1995 feature 12 Monkeys is a favorite amongst genre fans and the Syfy Channel is looking to capitalize on its popularity by bringing all the action to the small screen... sans Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt of course.
According to THR the cable network which previewed Ron Moore’s “Helix” at Comic-Con, is adapting Gilliam’s flick. The movie starred Bruce Willis as James Cole, a convicted criminal in a post-apocalyptic future where the Earth’s population is forced to live underground after a deadly virus. Of all the movies you might think would be natural choices for a spin-off show on the SyFy Channel, we’re not sure Twelve Monkeys was ever on the list, purely because of its wackadoodle Terry Gilliam Style. The gang at SyFy clearly disagrees, because the Us cable network is cooking up a pilot for a potential series. For those who have not enjoyed the warped tale of sickness, time travel and lunacy cooked up by His Gilliam-ness and writers David and Janet Peoples, the 1995 film starred Bruce Willis as James Cole, a prisoner serving time in a future world ravaged by a terrible virus. He’s offered a pardon if he’ll travel back in time – through some decidedly unsafe technology – and discover information key to stopping terrorist group the Army Of The Twelve Monkeys. Cable network Syfy is set to turn Terry Gilliam's cult 1995 sci-fi feature "12 Monkeys" into a TV series.
Bruce Willis starred in the original as James Cole, a convicted criminal in a near future where the last of humanity lives underground after a pandemic.
Cole is sent back in time to discover the source of the virus which was tied to a group of radicals known as the Army of the Twelve Monkeys. Brad Pitt earned an Oscar nomination for his memorable role in the project.
Producers Chuck Roven and Richard Suckle are planning a "Battlestar Galactica" style approach - crafting a 90-minute telemovie that will serve as a backdoor pilot for a straight-to-series order.
"Nikita" and "Terra Nova" scribes Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett will pen the script with Jon Cassar ("24") slated to direct.

Rise of the planet of the monkeys! Or, rise of the planet of the 12 monkeys, anyway, because it looks like the Syfy Channel is getting into the post-apocalyptic business with a TV series based on the 1995 movie “12 Monkeys”, directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt, and Madeleine Stowe. The original movie, based on the French short “La Jetee”, goes something like this: In the year 2035, convict James Cole volunteers reluctantly to be sent back in time by scientists to discover the origin of a deadly virus that wiped out nearly all of the earth’s population decades earlier. But when Cole is sent mistakenly to 1990 instead of 1996, he’s arrested and locked up in a mental hospital, where he meets a psychiatrist and the son (Brad Pitt) of a famous virus expert. No word on what the TV series will be about, but I suspect it’ll...

Dear SyFy: Don't you f*cking dare! Sincerely, Everyone. Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys is one of my favorite movies so having a series produced from the same people who greenlit Sharknado does not fill me with confidence. Terry Gilliam's 1995 feature 12 Monkeys is heading to the small screen. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the time travel tale is in development as a series with "Terra Nova" writers Travis Fickett and Terry Matalas attached to pen the pilot. Inspired by Chris Marker's 1962 short film "La Jetée," 12 Monkeys begins in a post-apocalyptic future wherein a convict, James Cole (played by Bruce Willis in the 1995 film), volunteers to travel back in time in the hopes of learning how it came to be that the release of a deadly virus set the world down a path to its own near-destruction. Chuck Roven and Richard Suckle, both of whom produced the original film, are attached to the series with a 90-minute pilot currently being planned. "24" helmet Jon...

The new horror anthology "The ABCs of Death" wants to give gorehounds what they want in alphabetical order by representing each of their 26 segments with a letter. That's fine with us, since we always have plenty of death scenes organized with the Dewey Decimal System, and here are 15 of the most memorable, bloody, and enjoyable ones in the bunch.

To mark the launch of its new game, Stratego Sci-Fi has surveyed more than 2,000 Britons to chart the Stratego Sci-Fi 100 – the nation’s top 100 stars of the sci-fi world – as well as a separate poll charting the best sci-fi battles from the silver screen – and has crowned Superman the greatest sci-fi character of all time

Of course we’re excited to see A Good Day to Die Hard, the next installment in the slam bang John McClane saga. After all, as a franchise Die Hard is arguably one of the very sources of the modern action genre (amongst other of course) and while true, it might not boast the prestige it once did, I’ll always be there for any new journey into McClane’s frantic, frenetic world.

It takes a certain type of person to travel through time. We often find that it’s those least likely to actually do it that figure it out while those who’ve toiled for years just never figure it out.
To celebrate the release of Looper, here’s our list of the 5 most unlikely time travellers in the history of cinema and television. If you think of any more then drop us a note in the comments box below.
5. Count Duckula
In the whole of Transylvania, there’s not a Vampire zanier than Duck-u-la! He won’t bite beast or man, because he’s vegetarian … he’s also a time traveling duck who uses his ancient, clearly magical castle to transport himself anywhere in the world and, as we’ve been reminded, anywhere in time too. That’s how he meets his previous incarnations as well as Queen Elizabeth the 1st.

You talk a big game about your love of long-haired stars — your Johnny Depps, your Viggo Mortensens, your Hugh Jackmans — but there's something about a bare head that adds to the menace and allure of our favorite action stars.
Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises" is definitely one of the baddest baldies we've ever seen. Seeing all of the havoc he will wreak on Gotham in the upcoming movie encouraged us to dig deeper. Below, check out 14 guys — and one girl — whose naked scalps have scared and intimidated us for years.
Jason Statham
No one has tied his name more to a particular type of movie more than Jason Statham, to the point where all you have to say is, "It's a Jason Statham movie" and everyone knows exactly what you're talking about. Sometimes you're in the mood for Kurosawa. Other times, you want to see a man ram a shotgun up someone's ass.

Whether they’re male or female, old or young, they’ve illuminated some classic movies. Here’s our top 50 list of sci-fi heroes and heroines…
On the face of it, compiling a list of truly great sci-fi protagonists should be easy. Pick a load of familiar names from a hat, write some breathlessly adoring drivel beneath them, and head off to the pub to reward a job well done.
Except it was never going to be as simple as that – and compiling lists seldom is. For every character making an appearance in the list below, there were at least two other possible candidates who didn't quite make the cut. Some sci-fi heroes were removed, then quickly reinstated. The order was jiggled around, then reordered again.
At one point, your humble writer realised there were more than 50 entries, and then had the unenviable task of hunting back through to decide which poor soul to eliminate.

Terry Gilliam followed up 1991‘s The Fisher King with the even more successful sci-fi, Twelve Monkeys. Andrew takes a look back at a 90s classic...
After 1991’s The Fisher King proved to be a relatively easy production and comfortably made its budget back, Terry Gilliam decided to work from somebody else's script again for his next movie, having abandoned an adaptation of A Tale Of Two Cities. The initial inspiration for Twelve Monkeys came from 1962's La Jetée, which resulted in a pitch to Universal Studios by Robert Kosberg (a producer on Commando and Deep Blue Sea) after gaining permission from the La Jetée's director Chris Marker.

Some movies simply demand repeat viewings, and a second watch often reveals new details you’d missed the first time. Here’s our pick of ten movies that deserve to be watched twice…
The vast majority of films produced are made purely for money, and this isn't really all that surprising when cash is still very much considered king in Hollywood. Nevertheless, every now and then a film comes out that commands your attention, engages your senses, and stays with you for quite sometime after it's finished.
Some call it art, others proclaim it the work of a genius and some, rather more simply, refer to it as a decent film. Either way, it doesn't really matter how you label them, one simple fact unites them all: some films are so good you have to see them at least twice, whether it's to understand the complexities of the plot, or...

I'm a Bruce Willis fan from way back. While my friends had pictures from Tiger Beat of Kirk Cameron and Ralph Macchio lining their walls, I was indifferent to their 'non-threatening' boy charms, because I had a thing for David Addison. While others argue it will not be man who will destroy the world (directly) but - an epidemic of global proportions (most probably from a potent strain of virus - think: I am Legend) or severe climactic change (another ice age perhaps? That would be Day After Tommorow right?) or mechanical uprising (The Terminator, anyone?) or even attack from the outside - conquering aliens (Mars Attacks!) or perhaps an asteroid. And let's not forget zombies!
