Berlin Kicks Off
Protests on the red carpet: The build-up to the 74th Berlin Film Festival has been highly politicized and Thursday evening’s opening ceremony was no different. The ceremony began with a red carpet awash with political statements. The festival held what it described as a ‘Filmmakers for Democracy, Diversity, and Peaceful Togetherness’ demonstration featuring between 50 and 60 filmmakers. Meanwhile, a series of attendees used their time in front of media pens to display their own political messages. The most eye-catching included American filmmaker Eliza Hittman, last at Berlin with her Silver Bear-winning Never Rarely Sometimes Always, who had ‘ceasefire now’ stitched to the back of her dress. The message was a reference...

Exclusive: UK industry veterans Richard Kondal and Patrick Fischer, founders of financier Creativity Capital, have formed a new co-production company dubbed Big Safari.
The banner marks the latest edition to the duo’s portfolio, which also includes shareholdings in sales agent Architect, VFX house Koala FX as well as Creativity Capital.
Big Safari was born off the back of the Simon West-directed 2022 television series Boundless, which Kondal and Fischer produced while at Fulwell 73 with Mono Films and Amazon. The strategy for the new outfit, said the duo, is to set up co-productions that help close finance for international producers, whether through accessing soft money in European co-productions as they did for Svalta or finding a cost-effective co-producer further afield like they did with UK-Philippines co-production The Bayou. It will also look to help European films access UK talent and locations.

Exclusive: Cameras are rolling on Stargazer, a new feature from artist-filmmaker Christian Neuman, which producers have described as a “modern psychic thriller” starring Rosalind Halstead and Poppy Delevingne.
The pic is Neuman’s second feature, following the 2019 horror feature Skin Walker, starring Udo Kier and Amber Anderson. The first week of principal photography has wrapped up in London, with the production now in Belgium and set to conclude in Luxembourg by mid-December.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Stargazer follows Fey Vilar, portrayed by Rosalind Halstead, a celebrated actress grappling with the abduction of her son, Paul. Using performance as a coping mechanism, Fey’s life takes an unexpected turn when she is offered a role in a play in which she must embody the character of Estelle Maar, Paul’s captor, in order to uncover the truth about her son’s disappearance. What a missed opportunity we have here. For two thirds of The Burnt Orange Heresy, this art world centered suspense film does a lot of things right. There’s quality acting, a sexy vibe, lovely settings, and a sense of foreboding doom that one can’t quite put their finger on. Then, in the third act, it all goes wrong. Characters begin acting completely randomly, ruining almost all of the goodwill generated by the first two acts. Now out in select theaters, this flick ends up being an interesting failure, when it was well on its way to being a small scale success. The movie is a drama, mixing suspense and thriller elements, all within the world of art, art criticism, and artists. Art critic James Figueras (Claes Bang) is lecturing in Italy when he meets American Berenice Hollis (Berenice Hollis). Drawn to his devilish charm, Berenice jumps into bed with him,...

"Think of the splash it would make... No critic has spoken to this guy in over 50 years." Sony Classics has revealed an official trailer for the film The Burnt Orange Heresy, an adaptation of a classic novel about the art world written by Charles Willeford. This premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year at the end of the festival, a delightful surprise (here's my review). Claes Bang stars as an art critic who gets in over his head when he's invited by an eccentric collector to his villa near Lake Como, only to learn there's a long lost painter hiding out in the guest house. His affair with an American woman, played by Elizabeth Debicki, complicates things further. The eccentric cast includes Mick Jagger, Donald Sutherland, and Rosalind Halstead. This is another trailer that gives away too much, but I love this film and must support it anyway. Here's...

On this new Syfy show, humans have had to fight to survive following a horrific war. Similarly, TV shows have to struggle to attract positive ratings so they can survive. Will Dominion be renewed for a second season or become a cancelled casualty instead? Stay tuned.

Well, what can I say, except, um, I expected something better than this 30-second first look at the upcoming new Syfy Channel show “Dominion.” This is, of course, the show based on the Scott Stewart movie “Legion,” starring Paul Bettany as an angel who comes to Earth to save the day. I really enjoy that movie — or at least, parts of it. There are whole chunks of “Legion” that are pretty terrible. Anyways, I did have high hopes for this TV series though, which we’re told “follows the perilous journey of a rebellious young soldier who discovers he’s the unlikely savior of humanity.” Plus, angels with swords and metal, bullet-deflecting wings, apparently. The show stars “Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s” Anthony Head, along with Alan Dale, Christopher Egan, Luke Allen-Gale, Carl Beukes, Chris Fisher, Shivani Ghai, Rosalind Halstead, and Roxanne McKee. One of the very first things any history student gets taught is objectivity. In fact, the most effective way to judge a distant era is to do it without judgement of values. While Stephen Frears's Mrs Henderson Presents more or less ignores that rule, it's a humorous and smart observation of a time when Great Britain was still trying to break away from the strict Victorian values.
The film is based on a true story. After her husband's death in 1937, Laura Henderson (Judi Dench) inherits his wealth and doesn't intend to be bored stiff by widowhood. On a whim, she buys a derelict London theatre, calls it the Windmill Theatre and persuade impresario Vivian Van Damm (Bob Hoskins) to run it even though both of them are at loggerheads. However, Henderson and Van Damm will go down in history for running a non-stop revue. Furthermore, they'll shock a government...
