In 2004, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” became the film with joint-most Oscar wins of all time with a whopping 11 victories, matching the total tallies of both “Titanic” and “Ben-Hur.” Those 11 Academy Awards capped off a hugely successful trilogy of movies that collectively snagged 28 Oscar nominations and 17 wins in total. But yet… Peter Jackson‘s film series, adapted from the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, is so, so good that, well, it could have won more. That sounds greedy and over the top, of course, but if you take a look at each film’s nominations, it’s actually very feasible that any one of the three films could have turned the bid into a win. So, with that in mind, here are five Oscar nominations that “The Lord of the Rings” films could and perhaps should have turned into victories.

The MCU made Oscar history this year as Angela Bassett earned the franchise its first-ever acting nomination for her supporting turn as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This was the sequel to “Black Panther,” which was the first film in the franchise to reap a Best Picture bid.
So often, the MCU is consigned to visual effects and sound categories at the Academy Awards. For both “Black Panther” movies to break through in key categories (plus double wins for Ruth E. Carter‘s costume design), is remarkable. Still, though, the artist and filmmaking talent on show in the MCU is often overlooked purely because they are superhero movies. With that in mind, here are five Oscars categories where the MCU deserves more attention.

“I’ve mostly been working in film, and I’ve realized TV is harder,” confesses makeup artist Nancy Vincent about her work on the pirate comedy “Our Flag Means Death.” For our recent webchat she continues, “It’s a lot faster. We were trying to make a feature film that lasts 30 minutes 10 times in a row with no breaks. It’s rolling and prepping and shooting all at the same time. The most important thing for me was having an amazing team.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“Our Flag Means Death” tells the tale of Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), an aristocrat who abandons his family to pursue the life of a pirate on the high seas. In the series, Oscar-winning screenwriter Taika Waititi plays infamous pirate Blackbeard. Vincent explains, “Stede’s so clueless about the whole pirating thing. He’s not trying to fake it. He just doesn’t know what’s going on.

“The fact we even did it was the most special thing about it,” declares Ra Vincent about the pirate comedy “Our Flag Means Death.” For our recent webchat he continues, “You couldn’t really imagine what it was going to be reading the words on the page. It wasn’t until you got all the carpenters together, and painters, and the story writers, and then the cast. Then you lit it. Then you talked with the cinematographer about the endless potential coverage for the show. The by-product of having a good time is making a really lovely show for everyone else to watch.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Working on “Our Flag Means Death,” a half-hour comedy now streaming on HBO Max, production designer Ra Vincent was excited for the challenge of crafting “a theatrical play … on the high sea.”
A fictionalized account of reallife 18th-century “gentleman pirate” Stede Bonnet (played by Rhys Darby) and his relationship with the infamous Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), the series needed to use its sets in ways that typical movie and television productions do not.
“It’s less of a major motion picture and more of a theater sports performance,” Vincent explains. At the outset, Vincent says the team decided, “Let’s build an environment where the cast can explore exactly who the character would be without the limitations of having a seriously preplanned set.” To fashion that kind of open space, the art department needed to make room for 100 crew members and their equipment, while also allowing...

The title of HBO Max’s half-hour action-comedy “Our Flag Means Death” alludes to a universally acknowledged truth: pirates are scary. They look scary. Their ships, whether decked out in black sails or crewed by barnacle encrusted zombies, are designed to provoke fear and dread. But the protagonist of “Our Flag Means Death,” rich landowner Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), could barely hold his own in a Jane Austen drawing room before he decided his mid-life crisis would involve decking out a privateer and taking to the high seas. This gives the show an interesting challenge. How do you both create the giant pirate ships and dens iniquity that so thrilled Stede, without letting the period of it all – your spars and ropes and mizzenmasts, and your candelabras bolted to the walls every five feet – distract the audience from the performers doing comedy? How do you make sure that Stede looks...

Bron Media, leveraging its expertise in producing CGI-animated titles like Netflix’s The Willoughbys and acknowledging the pressure to explore new business models during Covid-19, has launched a digital division.
Jason Chen will lead production and technology as Head of Digital. He will oversee the virtual production and service unit as it develops and produces long-form animation for series television, short-form content and motion pictures. Vancouver-based Bron Media Corp. (“Greyhound”) has launched Bron Digital, a new virtual production division that will marry its traditional CG-animation with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine-centered workflow. Visual Effects industry vet Jason Chen (“Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens”) will serve as head of Digital.
Bron Digital’s first project will be the animated series, “Fables,” based on the timeless teachings of “Aesop’s Fables,” but with a modern twist. The eight-episode series is created by Kevin Turen (“Euphoria”), directed by Azazel Jacobs (“The Lovers”), and production designed by Oscar nominee Ra Vincent (Jojo Rabbit”). Three additional original animated series and digital film productions are scheduled to begin this summer.
With the pandemic hastening Bron’s live-action production and pushing back its theatrical slate, the company needed to diversify its animation business. It turned to financial partner Creative Wealth Media for additional revenue to launch the new virtual production division.

The 24th annual Art Directors Guild Awards, which honors the best production design in film and television, took place Saturday, February 1. All eyes were on the Period Film category, which this year had four nominees match up with the Oscars for Best Production Design: “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “1917” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” The other two Adg period contenders were “Ford v Ferrari” and “Joker,” while the Oscars’ fifth bid went to “Parasite,” which was up for Contemporary Film at the guild. Scroll down to see the full winners list for the 2020 Adg Awards.

In the last 20 years, only three Best Picture winners have also won the Oscar for Best Production Design or Art Direction. Yet there’s a very good chance that it will happen again this year. That’s because all five production design nominees are so brilliantly effective in their world building, ranging from the period pieces “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “The Irishman,” and “Jojo Rabbit,” to the contemporary outlier, “Parasite.”
All five possess the two most important aspects of successful production design: innovation and story support, while, at the same time, dazzling us with period detail, cultural authenticity, and iconic style.
Without a doubt, though, the frontrunner is Dennis Gassner’s masterful work on Sam Mendes’ continuous-shot, World War I extravaganza, “1917,” which has grabbed momentum after its PGA and Golden Globe wins. The intricate set builds (with set decoration by Lee Sandales) for the trenches, No Man’s Land,...

“I was absolutely flabbergasted to see my name pop up at 2 a.m. as I must admit I was awake,” production designer Ra Vincent admits about his second career Oscar nomination for his work on “Jojo Rabbit,” which he shares with set decorator Nora Sopková. “It was a spectacular surprise because I didn’t think, in such illustrious company that we would be making it in for production design,” he says. Watch our exclusive video interview with Vincent above.
In writer/director Taika Waititi‘s satirical “Jojo Rabbit,” Johannes “Jojo” Betzler, a young boy (Roman Griffin Davis) during WW2 Germany discovers that his single mother (Scarlett Johansson) has been hiding a Jewish girl, Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie) in the attic of their home. Jojo befriends Elsa and confronts his own prejudices while also interacting with his imaginary friend, a neurotic and moronic Adolf Hitler (Waititi), who follows him throughout his journey of self-discovery.

It’s a strong season for period production design Oscar contenders, with Sam Mendes’ bold, continuous-shot, Word War I thriller, “1917,” as the frontrunner. It required production designer Dennis Gassner and the art department to make the intricate sets in precise accordance with the choreography of Roger Deakins’ tour de force camera work.
Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” masterfully explores class divide in Korea, boasting the season’s most elaborate production design work by designer Lee Ha Jun. The exquisite mansion serves as a central character; and the home’s vertical design expresses space and division, highlighted by wood, glass, and spare furniture.
Another standout is Barbara Ling’s work on Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” She provides a 50-year facelift to Hollywood Blvd. and Westwood Village for Tarantino’s 1969 love letter to Tinseltown, and recreated the creepy Spahn Ranch in the San Fernando Valley for the Manson Family lair.

It was a historic day for Korean cinema as the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards were announced earlier today. Kicking things off was “In the Absence” by Yi Seung-jun and Gary Byung-seok Kam, a documentary on the tragic sinking of Mv Sewol ferry in 2014, which was nominated in the Best Documentary Short Subject category. A short while later, “Parasite” took centre stage. And let’s not forget one more Asian Title within the nominations, the Award-Winning Stop-Motion Animation “Sister” by Siqi Song.
The Bong Joon-ho directed thriller made history once again by becoming the first Korean film to be nominated for Best Picture, while Bogn also became the first Korean director to be nominated for Best Director. The film ended the nominations announcement ceremony with six nominations in all, including three of the so-called “big categories”. Sam Mendes’ bold, continuous-shot, World War I thriller, “1917,” and Todd Phillips’ $1 billion blockbuster, “Joker,” dominated the Oscar craft nominations on Monday, grabbing seven apiece.
Meanwhile, Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” each scored five nominations, while Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” nabbed three along with James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari.” Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” each came away with two nominations, and Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” was singled out for Randy Newman’s romantic score.
But “1917” provided the biggest tour de force crafts event of the season, with nominations for Roger Deakins’ uniquely orchestrated cinematography, Dennis Gassner’s exacting production design, Thomas Newman’s haunting score, the unusual sound editing and sound mixing, and, surprisingly, makeup and hairstyling and VFX.

Chicago – In a sense of deja vu from the recent Golden Globe Awards, the nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards has been named on January 13th, 2020. This breaks a precedent of the last ten years, with the Oscar ceremony moved up to February 9th from it’s usual position in late February to early March.
Nine films were named in the Best Picture category, with “Little Women” and “Ford vs. Ferrari” joining the seven other films recognized by the Golden Globes (including Best Foreign Language Film Globe winner “Parasite”). “Joker” led the numbers game with 11 nominations, with 10 nods for “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman.” The Best Actress category was exactly the same as the Globes (Drama), and Leonardo Di Caprio is the only difference in the Best Actor column. As at the Golden Globes, the directing category is the same five men, again snubbing Greta Gerwig for “Little Women.

To deliver the “anti-hate satire” of “Jojo Rabbit,” the story of a German boy who idolizes his own particular vision of Hitler before slowly learning the truth, director Taika Waititi followed a simple philosophy when it came to assembling his crew: “I like working with nice people.”
Most of the members had previously collaborated with Waititi. For instance, costume designer Mayes C. Rubeo, who recently made the Costume Designers Guild Assn. shortlist for her work on the film, also joined Waititi on “Thor: Ragnarok.” “She has such style and class,” says the director. “And she’s got a great eye.” Waititi says Rubeo traveled Europe to acquire the vintage textiles that brought the film’s costumes together. “She would haggle,” he jokes.
It was through those travels that Rubeo met seamstresses who had knowledge of the uniforms that Hitler wore. That became useful when it came to assembling the outfits...

When production designer Ra Vincent met with Taika Waititi about his ‘anti-hate’ satire Jojo Rabbit, he was surprised to learn that the director wanted to craft a World War II film unlike any seen before.
“Taika was keen to make a Second World War film that had a stronger sense of design about it. The natural default is to go for a muted palette, and most of our references are sepia-toned or black-and-white photographs,” Vincent tells Deadline, “but we had an opportunity to represent the world in a brighter, more optimistic fashion.”
For the collaborators, much of this decision came down to the fact that the story was being told from the perspective of a 10-year-old boy. Based on a novel by Christine Leunens, Jojo Rabbit centers on Jojo Betzler, an avid member of the Hitler Youth who is joined everywhere he goes by his imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler. Discovering...

On December 9, the Art Directors Guild announced the nominees for its 24th annual awards, which will be handed out on Feb. 1. These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the Academy Awards. Over the first 23 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Production Design has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories.
According to our expert predictions, period film contender “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” is the clear frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Production Design. We expect that three of its rival in that race at the Adg — “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit” and “1917” — will also contend at the Oscars. The fifth Academy Awards nominee is expected to be “Little Women,” but its odds might lengthen after being snubbed by the guild.

“The Irishman,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “1917” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” on Monday all nabbed nominations for the Art Directors Guild Awards’ period-film category, the Adg category that most closely corresponds to the Academy Award for Best Production Design.
In the Adg fantasy-film category, which typically supplies one or two Oscar nominees, the guild singled out “Ad Astra,” “Aladdin,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Dumbo,” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”
Both of those categories were expanded from five to six nominees because of ties.

When the Academy Award nominations are announced on Jan 13, don’t be surprised if “Jojo Rabbit” ends up with more craft nominations than you might have anticipated. Taika Waititi’s farcical dramedy is set in a small German town in World War II, but features a look and style rarely seen with such period films. Much of that is due to the work of production designer Ra Vincent.

The luxurious Park mansion in Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” and the baroque middle-class German house in Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” are evocative examples of home design as metaphoric characters, which help set the mood, define the people, and propel the action. On top of that, they both contain secret hiding places to flip the stories on their heads (the bunker in “Parasite” and the attic in “Jojo Rabbit”).
“Parasite” masterfully explores class divide in Korea, with the struggling Ki-taek family occupying the Park household as part of a sly gig-economy con. The exquisite home’s vertical design expresses space and division, highlighted by wood, glass, and spare furniture. “In the film, we wanted all the interior and architecture to be simpler, wider, and sometimes denser than complicated,” said production designer Lee Ha Jun. “Director Bong commented that in the film, the [architect] character Namgoong Hyun-ja intended to design the...

While all of the awards have been arranged in advance by the studios and their campaigners, it is an important stop by contenders looking for success at the Oscars, Golden Globes and elsewhere. That’s because it is the first opportunity for many of the hopefuls to be on an awards red carpet with representatives from a wide variety of films and also be on stage accepting a trophy.

When picturing Nazi Germany during World War II, most people think of black-and-white or sepia-toned images of drab cities. For the cinematographer and production designer of “Jojo Rabbit,” a film set squarely in that time and place, it became clear that the color palette of the era was far more varied than they could have imagined.
As preparation for shooting Taika Waititi’s satire, adapted from Christine Leunens’ book “Caging Skies,” cinematographer Mihai Malaimare Jr. and production designer Ra Vincent researched the era using photos and footage that had been restored to reveal the colors of the period.
“The primary goal was to show environments from a child’s point of view that had a playful nature to them, instead of an adult point of view,” says Vincent. “What the locations department came back with were these little cute Czech villages that were right on the German border. They pretty...

Fresh from its People’s Choice Award win at the Toronto Film Festival, Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” received a rapturous reception at the London Film Festival. This Fox Searchlight release will unspool stateside on October 18 and is poised to be a major contender this Oscar season.
Waititi adapted Christine Leunens novel “Caging Skies.” He boldly added a layer of humor to her serious-minded story about a young boy (Roman Griffin Davis) in Nazi Germany who has Adolf Hitler as an imaginary friend. His script blends comedy and drama and is certain to figure in the Adapted Screenplay race at the Academy Awards. Waititi, who also directed, pulls triple duty by playing Hitler as well. His edgy portrayal of the dictator as a complete moron was a stand-out and could well reap him a third nomination. Indeed, you wish there were more scenes with him.

Over the past 17 years, Dan Hennah has had quite a career working as either the art director or production designer on most of Peter Jackson‘s films. Their memorable collaboration on “King Kong” as well as the “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies have rewarded him with five Oscar nominations including a win for “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.” Now, Hennah and co-production designer Ra Vincent have brought their talents to Taiki Waititi’s “Thor: Ragnarok”, which is arguably one of Marvel Studios’ most critically acclaimed films and a surefire blockbuster following its $121 million domestic opening this past weekend.

Grandeur often rules the day in Best Production Design, which awards the men and women responsible for a movie's set design and construction. The category typically favors period pieces, though at least one fantasy title tends to find a home every year. It is rare for truly contemporary films to be nominated. However, the category is more open to fantasy and contemporary pieces than its cousin Best Costume Design. (Last year was the first year the costume designers had their own branch, but no easily discernible new trends could be observed in my opinion.) Recent years have also suggested openness to CGI-complemented work ("Life of Pi" and "Gravity" immediately jump to mind). On that note, it's worth mentioning that the Art Directors Guild has implemented a new rule somewhat under the radar for its precursor awards this season. According to the new provision, period films must now have the majority...
